University of Kentucky Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Jessica

The worst thing about UK is the parking situation. The main parking lot is a mile from classes with busses running to and from campus for only a fraction of the day. It's very inconveneint to come to campus if you live off campus. A parking pass also costs $268 even when they closest you can park is a mile away.

Garrad

I wouldnt say that there is a worst thing about the school except that some if the classes can be a bit o erwhelmingly big. I particularly like smaller classes where there is more a connection with the professor but alot of classes here are very large with hundreds of strudents. So you get the feeling that some of the professors arent really passionate about the student actually learning the material rather than regurgitating text.

meliss

The guidance from the academic advisors. Entering freshman msotly do not know what they want to do and need guidance and ways to decide what they should major in. I ended up taking many classes I never needed and was in college 5 years for a traditional 4 year degree due to confusion and lack of help scheduling the needed classes.

Jennifer

The worst thing, and the most expected thing, about the University of Kentucky is the size. What the welcoming team fails to mention on that first campus tour is the sheer size of the student population. UK students make up a number larger than 20,000; becoming a member of a club or organization that has 30 to 40 members doesn’t necessarily decrease that number. In addition, the standard lecture classroom seats a number from 200 to 500 students. While most professors do their best to engage the students in group work, the class size still remains enormous.

Shannon

The worst thing about my school is the parking availablity. Parking spots are few and far between which makes it difficult to navigate around campus.

Kimberly

Everyone thinks that we are all Greek affiliated; yes, Greek life is huge on our campus, but there are many other activities/clubs/organizations/etc. for you to get involved with. They're not hard to find, either! There are a great deal of volunteer opportunities as well. The bonds that you can make from all of these opportunities are definitely worth looking past the Greek life that everyone thinks we revolve around. There's so much more to the campus than what meets the eye!

Elizabeth

I find that although most students are completely dedicated to their tasks, some use key class time to talk and interrupt others.

Morgan

There were time when I had to park in an unfavorable location on campus, far away from my classes.

Brandy

Greek life because people are so judgemental if you did not rush or pledge.

Sonya

The way that off-campus students and transfer students are treated.

Rebekah

I would consider the cost the worst aspect of attending the University of Kentucky. As a student who pays for school on their own, I can whole heartedly say that the lifestyle that I lead between working, attending, and life, would not be manageable by all the students who deserve the chance to succeed at this University.

Grace

Some of the dorms are pretty bad. The rooms themselves are fine, but the bathrooms and elevators are pretty bad.

amber

There is nothing that i can say bad about my school because I haven't been here long enough to really get a better understanding of things.

clifford

The worst thing about my college is how hung up kids are as far as social status is concerned especially in sports. I thought that once you left high school all that a lot of that drama would be over, but when you have to deal with who is playing which sport, or who is in what frat I find it frustrating that I cannot associate myself with certain people based on their social status. Like most schools we have our pride and joy sports team that everyone loves, and if you don’t you are an outcast.

Nicholas

The worst thing about the university of kentucky is signing up for classes to work for you. Most of the time when scheduling classes it is hard to schedule them to fit what works for you and woking off campus to pay for college.

Melinda

The people! The people here are not the most welcoming people. I came in to the University of Kentucky as an African American female. Diversity on campus is "decent", but when it comes to getting along with other african american females...it is non existant. The girls here are very judgemental and unwelcoming. Dirty looks, stares, whispers, are all typical things I find them doing on a daily basis. Luckily, I'm a strong individual and can handle it.

Kyle

The age of some of the facilities is my biggest problem with the school. The agricultural college for instance has an elevator that breaksdown, as well as a dusty and dark class rooms.

T'Kiah

I believe that school does not reward students by increasing scholarship dollars. I know of many students who lost their scholarships due to academic reasons. I have been able to maintain at least a 3.0 and am unable to receive an increase in my scholarship that pays for in-state tuition only. I have contacted the school president's wife, the scholarship committee and spoken to several financial aid officers who all say that there is no money available.

Emily

The worst thing about the school is probably the wealth of things to do. Being given so many opportunities makes it hard to balance social and educational responsibilities. Perhaps more importantly, the school is like its own community. It's easy to forget sometimes that campus is actually in the middle of a big city, with its own share of interesting things.

Courtney

The emphasis on Greek Life and close-mindedness.

Kierra

That the tution is so high. I dont think it would be that bad if I seen where the tution was going but we still have to pay an outragous amount to park the dorms are horrible and old, the food is nasty.

Elizabeth

The worst thing about my school is the lack of diversity and the lack of integration. There are pockets of diversity around campus but nothing that gets absorbed into the mainstream school. That is why it is so frustrating to meet people who seem so ignorant about the world and the happenings on the campus. It is alot of times reall racist as well.

Elizabeth

The worst thing about this school is the highway-robbery for rent for off-campus housing that is in walkable distance to our campus. Rents are extremely high compared to the surrounding market of housing in Lexington Kentucky. For example, the house I rent with several other girls costs over $27,000 per year to rent. It is hard for a college student to pay these astronomical prices., but somehow because we love the University of Kentucky and all it stands for, we endure the hardship.

Shaun

I would consider the tuition costs the worst thing about my school because I am an out of state student and though no school in my state offers my major, I must still pay out of state tuition because my state does not participate in any form of the Academic Common Market. This means I am paying a fair amount more than in-state students for the same education, which I deem to be somewhat unfair.

Brandon

The worst thing about my school is the myriad book requirements for each class. On average, two to three books are required to be bought for each class with another two or so recommended purchases, amounting to about 150$ per class when bought new from a bookstore. Shopping for used books reduces the price by roughly half, but the text book cost is really high, especially when some professors never use the textbook and the tests are out of their notes and lectures. Many times the text books are wasted money.

London

I think the worst thing about the school would be that for some general classes, there are only large class lecture halls available, making it difficult to get personalized attention from the proffessor. However, there are many other options for outside help in the course.

Josiah

I considered the worst thing is probably the price of tuition, because I'm barely able to have each semster paid for to attend.

Jerron

My school does not have too many thing 'bad' about it, but I would say that it could be a little more diverse.

Keith

The worst thing about the University of Kentucky is that the dorms are getting a little out dated. I feel that if UK was able to put more money into more updated, modern dorms, then more people would be inclined to apply for housing on campus rather than moving into apartments or condos instead.

John

It is very large and you are pretty much looked at as a number, not a person. You float through the system as a numerical figure, my any professors could care less who you really are and just teach so they can do research or reap benefits through the university.

Zachary

I feel the worst characteristic of this school is the parking and transportation system and the lack of costly, available on-campus parking.

Matt

i really dont like that the music department has the worst building on campus. they support the athletic bands but really nothing else.

Gwendolyn

I would have to say that one of the worst things about the school that i got to be that you have to park at the football statium and take the bus to campus and you have to pay $ 250 for a parking passes. I don't think that this is far. Also the school is not very diverse at all.

Stephanie

Parking on campus is difficult and annoying.

Ben

I consider the overall quality and variety of on-campus food to be the worst thing about the university of kentucky because there are really only about 6 main places to eat and the food at all of them seems to be very unhealthy. This lack of food variation makes eating on-campus very monotonous. Not to mention the high prices at the on-campus grocery store, which is just ludicrous. On-campus food is the definitely the worst part about my school.

Lauren

The worst thing about my school is that little bit of people who don't care about anything. I would say 3/4 of the University of Kentucky's students are concentrated on their studies and working hard to graduate in time. And then there is that little percentage of students who just don't care. Who tempt you away from your schoolwork. I don't really like those people. I love the people who are at the library and are just as concerned at succeeding as I am.

Emily

Ummm probably finding parking.

Ahsha

The worst thing about my school are the rising prices of school tuition. I price isn't horrible but just that fact that this recessiona s casued us to raise the price is in some ways a problem. It's affordable but you never want to pay more and more each year to go to school.

Ashleigh

The professors push a lot of material in a short amount of time. Also, in most classes, your grade only depends on three or four very difficult tests.

Von

The worst thing about the University of Kentucky is the large size of some of the classes. Some of the classes are upwards of three hundred students. These large classes are usually what the students have to take in their first year. It is already hard enough to make the transition from high school to college and these large classes do not help. It is only once the students get to their sophomore or junior year that they start to have classes with twenty to forty students.

Cynthia

The stupidity of people and close-mindedness.

William

The campus police, they harass the students for having fun. They won't stop the real crime like laptops being stolen only drinking!

blair

The worst is walking to class through the snow and ice when you have to park on the other side of campus, but who doesn't have to do that at a big school.

dean

The cazy amount of people ther are a lot and sometimes it can be overwhelming

Stephanie

Parking

Michael

The worst thing I consider about my school is the size. It's a duanting size, but its something I used to. I have attended other large schools and have grown accustom to it. Coming from out-of-state and not knowing anyone can be terrifying. I'm adjusting to my new surroundings and have been welcomed with open arms.

Andrew

Without a doubt, the social structure at the University of Kentucky has been most detrimental and only negative thing about my experience here. Everyone is like me, only with less substance. The core of the social circle is greek life. You have the option of living a low-key, quiet college life, or joining a greek organization to make friends and stay busy. There seems to be few other ways to make friends and get involved which is a huge shame for a school and town that is so rich in so many ways. It lacks social diversity, bottom line.

Demetrius

I consider the parking the worst thing at my school because there are limited places to park.

Kathryn

I know alcohol is a big deal on any college campus and while this doesn't bother me a great deal, it is an issue that often leads to poor decisions, injuries, or deaths. I understand that there is really nothing anyone can do about this issue; I just wish that people did not care as much about drinking as they actually do. I believe it would save a lot of people a lot of problems.

Patryk

The worst thing about my school is sometimes having to walk in excess of twenty mintues to get to a class, or to get home. Me, being an athlete, have practice in the morning, and all of the athletic facilities for my sport are on one corner of the campus, while the majority of my classes are at the other corner. I also live in an off campus apartment and I dont want to drive because I can save money walking and the inavailabilty of parking during the day because usually every lot around classes are full.
