University of Kentucky Top Questions

What kind of person should attend this school?

Aspen

Someone who is ready to jump at opportunities. The University of Kentucky has plenty, but you have to be prepared to put yourself out there. If you like greek life, but don't enjoy the extreme party scene (lee Project X), UK has some pretty chill frats and sororities. Also, greek life looks awesome but it isn't for everyone. Just know if you feel uncomfortable (which you will) you can leave and find love and support from the other 30,000 students here. If you are interested in journalism, The Kernel is UK's student-run newspaper. They are based online and do print 3 times a week. They've had people graduate to work with NY Times, Washington Post, and ESPN. So, yeah, they rock. All-in-all you don't really have to be any one thing. If you enjoy sports, come on down. Like singing? We have a rocking women's choir. Plenty of campus ministries for worship and fun. One thing you do need to get into? Horses. We freaking love our horses.

Kelsey

I think that a person who is interested in furthering their education, building lifelong relationships, and supporting a huge sports program should attend UK. There's a lot to offer to many people out there with lots of different interests. They'd just have to know what they're looking for (or not because the school provides resources for that sort of thing as well).

The only requirement for doing well at the University of Kentucky is to be motivated and independent. At such a large school, it is sometimes necessary to self-advocate. A student can get lost in the numbers. However, especially as an upperclassman, a proactive student can make contacts with great advisors and professors that are willing to assist him/her with anything. Other than that, any student can find a niche on campus. There are all sorts of fields of study, campus activities and clubs where students can discover their interests.

Emily

A person that should attend this school is someone who likes a large campus and a large population but in a college town. Lexington revolves around University of Kentucky. The University is in the center of the town. The large campus enables many people to feel like they belong. There are plenty of activities and clubs to get involved in for any interest. Also a person that attends this school should like or tolerate walking because most dorms are on south campus whereas most classes are on north. It is about a mile walk to class a day.

Caroline

The kind of person that should attend the University of Kentucky would be a bubbly and outgoing individual. However, more important than that is the person should really be appreciative of Greek life and want to be a part of it. Kentucky is mainly made up of greek life. There are thirteen different sororities, and even more fraternities. I was shocked when I came here and actually realized how serious they take it here. It isn't just a hobby, or some random group you are a part of. It's your life. It just engulfs you, and you are kept busy at all times, but those who are in it completely love it and thrive off of it. So if I were to pick one kind of person it would have to be someone who is open-minded to that.

Someone who is self-motivated, social, and willing to be involved. The campus is large, so student organizations play a big part in what kind of student you decide to be. There are a lot of ways to get involved that don't involve Greek life, which is a huge upside for a campus of this size, and being involved greatly increase the chance that a student will lead a happy and productive campus life.

At such a large University, I believe you have to be a self motivated student, because nobody is here to force you to go to class. You also need the ability to discern time for work along with time for friends because without friends it is impossible to find motivation to do the work to begin with.

Kiyoe

In general, students should be willing to ask for help when they're struggling, whether it be from peers, upperclassmen, or professors. Time management is key, especially if you work (don't work more than 20 hours per week!); a lot needs to be done and it's never-ending until the end of the semester.

If you're a UK fan or you're interested in something like business or pre-med and you want a medium to large sized school you might like it here. Bottom line is you have tio visit campuses and find the one that you feel like fits you. I would never recommend going to a college you have not visited. When you visit a campus you'll probably know if you'd like it there or not. And look into the classes offered and quality of the individual schools at the college/university.

UK has a diverse student body and offers a wide range of options for study. It's a great place for just about anyone with a strong desire to learn and to pursue higher education goals before entering a profession or graduate school. To all UK students, my advice is to take classes that interest you and pursue your academics with gusto. Also, don't miss out on the many extracurricular activities here. Student groups are great places to make lasting friendships, develop your passions, and even discover new paths for life after college--and there's something for everyone.

Tiffany

A student who enjoys sorority life, is outgoing , and cheerleader type would probably find this college very inviting. The campus is beautiful and gives the feeling of a rural campus although in an urban setting . There is awesome school spirit on the campus from the students and the surrounding community in support of the sport teams. The whole town of Lexington turns blue for basketball and football games. It is very impressive and fun to be a part of as a student. The size of the student body provides many opportunites to meet students from all backgrounds.

Cortney

I think that anyone could attend The University of Kentucky. We have a very diverse population, and I think that anyone who decides to attend can find where they belong here.

Nathan

Middle of the road science, law, or engineering student. You didn't do well enough to get into a prestigeous school (Ivy League, or just good like Penn State), but still want a great education in a small city. The tuition keeps going up, but still far cheaper than most other recognized schools (especially if you live in-state).

Andrea

UK is a pretty big school, so I don't think it is ideal for an overly shy person; you must be willing to get involved and meet new people. It is sometimes difficult to stay focused in the larger classes, so to succeed, you really have to want to learn. There are many different kinds of people at such a large school, so an open mind isimportant. It seems that many people often get caught up in their social lives, so students must be driven if the wish to stay here for their entire college education.

Michael

Honestly there is a place for anyone who wants to come to UK. I can't speak for everyone how they feel about the school because I have never step a foot in their shoes. For me, I have felt at home.
