I would say that preparing for college starts early. I have recieve TOPS in high school, and it has helped me finacially. Also, make sure that you really want to go to the college that you pick. Sit down with your parents and talk about if this college is the one you really want to attend. There is nothing wrong with attending techincal colleges or something like that. Depending on your major, most of your classes will be basic stuff like math and english. Think hard and long about what major you wish to persue. College is not cheap. Even with TOPS I have an extra $300 I have to pay. Don't spend time in a field that you don't really like. At the same time, though, experiment with the courses. Don't be afraid to take a course. You never know if you're gonna like it or not! Lastly, attending college is a fun experiance. However, I found out the hard way that you have to really work at it to pass. Study habits are best formed in high school. Trust me; you'll be doing alot of studying.

Looking for a college is fun and the students aspirtaions should be taken into great consideration. Look at not only the majors but classes make up those majors. Walk around during a school day and observe and talk to passing students is the best way to feel out the atmosphere. Drive around town and find out what activities are around. Also find out the distance of important locations, hospitals, banks, and groceries. Students should have fun but remember they are paving the way for their careers and life and should set priorities.

Make sure you choose the school that is right for you or your child. Don't just accept one. And always have a 2nd school in mind just to be sure.

It's all about what you (as a student) are comfortable with. That gut feeling that tells you it's right. Don't be afraid to be an individual, and not go to the school your friends did , or that ivory league top notch school. You have to take the chance to try new things and experiances.

Don't settle on a school because it will cost you the least-- you get what you pay for.

If I were counseling parents and/or students on the college experience, I would definitely tell them to do some research, and visit possible choice schools. I'd pick a school that includes more than one of my academic interests, in case of a decision to change majors; also, pick a school within your budget- though admittedly, some big "brand names" seem to earn you more status, especially when planning for graduate school, education, or physical sciences. In addition, consider the school's other activities- clubs, sports, etc. Diversity is key- college is all about expanding your horizons.

The way a campus makes you feel is important because you will spend most of your time there, using its resources and sharing with the other students there. Visiting a school you are considering is the best way to decide if it is right for you. Other good ideas in picking out a school include: Sitting in the classrooms, asking current students about the activities and work loads, knowing what the weather conditions are.

Parents and/or students need to be aware of the research efforts of the university for the field of study they are wanting to pursue in order to unmistakingly choose the correct university for the profession they are seeking. Once that has been done it is easier to make a proper judgement call on the correct university for him/her. Attening a college for it's party lifestyle is not an intelligent move for anyone seeking a professional degree. The college life experience is what each and every student chooses to make of it. Finding proper study groups and friends are essential to becoming a success in any college.

I would say you should definitely do campus tours and preview days. Be sure you are familiar with the community and make sure you like living there.

My advice to parents and students would be to find the school that offers the most for the chosen major. For example, if majoring in psychology, look at the school's courses and choose the one that best fits the chosen field of psychology. A lot of colleges offer the basic courses, but some offer different types of courses that teach students more in their chosen major. Courses that give a deeper understanding in the field of study to help students choose the right path for their career or graduate school. To make the most of the college experience, I recommend getting involved. Students should join groups to help others in their environment and learn responsibilities for the future. They should also focus on school work to succeed in college with good grades. College work can be difficult at times, but if students put everyting into the learning process, they can do well with little problems.

Parents should allow thier children to choose whichever university they wish to attend. Students should take each and every opportunity to broaden their horizons and experience the 'college life', but be mindful of your choices at the same time.
