While I do think that the campus itself is pretty, there are some things that should be improved upon. The professors are not always looking out for their students best interest because many of them are here for research opportunities. The on-campus housing is not always ideal with there still being many dorms without A.C. and with cockroaches roaming the hallways. What really makes UMD great is the communities of people that you are able to find and bond with. There are hundreds of clubs which makes the big school seem a lot smaller.

My overall opinion is that the University of Maryland, College Park is a great academic and social university. There are many opportunities to get involved and to meet new people. The professors and classes are very helpful in order to prepare students for getting jobs after college. I would recommend this school to other people.

My overall opinion on this school is it seems like they really don't care about students. Besides the academics which is phenomenal, there are a lot of concerns about the treatment of the kids. For example our living conditions. Some buildings don't have A/C so during really hot days some dorms had a really tough time staying cool. The rooms are dirty from time to time containing things like mold. I am not saying live in a 5 star hotel but we are paying a lot of money but we are not getting treated right. rooms are very small and cramped and some people feel very uncomfortable. It should always be about the kids first since we are going there. One of the students died on the football team and their apologizes did not feel real at all. Including the Dean's. Something has to change.

UMD is a wonderful school to attend. The academics here are challenging and the social life extends beyond that of the party scene. We are also located right our of D.C. so a twenty minute metro ride will get you to the nation's capital. There are some issues that students have taken up with the administration concerning safety for students who are in minority groups because we have seen the untimely death of a Black student and Lieutenant. Also, there have been postings of Nazi symbols and hateful speech towards members of the LGBT community. The university establishes different campaigns to address these issues but students want more. All in all, the good experiences at this campus will definitely outweigh the bad, although, I could do without all the construction that is cutting off the quickest routes to my classes.

I have mixed feelings about University of Maryland, College Park. It is a great school regarding academics however, often times, it feels as though the university does not care about the students. Most of the building are old and do not have interesting architecture. This is particularly an issue with dormitories. A great deal of students are put in incredible old buildings, that were to be demolished years ago. These building have no air conditioning or any modern features. Additionally, the university seems to be playing favorites. If one is admitted in a scholar’s program, they not only get to be in special classes but have reserved dorms. These dorms, tend to be much nicer, with better amenities and in better locations. I believe if one is admitted in a scholar’s program, they have earned the right to be in a tight knit program. However, with a campus that has limited dorms, certain buildings should not be reserved for people in specific programs. The university cares about its reputation and not about its student’s success or well-being. I believe that the purpose of a higher education institute is to teach people certain skills that they can then utilize in the professional word and make a living. However, the university does not seem to be focused on teaching but on competition. The university purposely makes its programs harder and harder, in an effort to weave out individuals so they can work towards having the best program. The plus minus grading system is an example of that as it tends to hurt student’s GPAs. Moreover, there seems to be some sort of corruption happening on the upper levels of administration as the President of the institute, Wallace Loh, received a great pay increase in the past year. The administration seems to be enjoying their time whilst, thousands of students take out millions and billions of loans in an attempt to get a degree from Maryland.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed my freshman year here. It was not perfect though; the food wasn't very high quality and the conditions of my dorm left a lot to be desired. However, as a whole the experience was still very new and refreshing for me. I was challenged academically in every class, even the supposedly easy or "bs" classes that people take for easy A's. So be prepared to put in a lot of work when it comes to academics.

It's a huge school, so if you're up for extracurriculars and sports, this is where it's at! Some lectures can be big too, but there's always someone who is willing to help outside of class. I would say it can be expensive, especially if you're out-of-state, but it's worth the experience.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

The college is very big with many different opportunities and way to be involved. It has the drawbacks that come with bigger campuses such as on-campus housing being less desirable, however, the benefits and opportunities of a big school and the excellent academics and degree programs outweigh these drawbacks.

I love UMD! It has a gorgeous tree-filled campus that's still close to Washington DC and a train from NYC. The kids are friendly, and even though I came from out of state I was accepted and included immediately. Not to mention high-level academics, fun programming, lots of extracurriculars, and more.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

The University of Maryland: College Park is very good school in terms of academics for those who are pursuing a higher level of education. Compared to other top 20 schools in the country, the University of Maryland: College Park is affordable and provides flexibility in how students are able to make payment arrangements and receive aid to pay for their expenses. I feel the University of Maryland: College Park needs to improve on how it assist transfer students in making their transition from Community College to a Four-Year University since many of the things you come across in a Four-year University can be a bit overwhelming in terms of academic culture, class sizes, and knowing who to reach out to when someone is experiencing their struggles. From personal experience, reach out to advisers you meet with during orientation and explain to them during your first semester what you are going through a transfer student so they can be supportive to you and provide to you resources that will be of great assistance in being able to feel at home within the University of Maryland: College Park. Always attend office hours if you need to with professors, check out library books on campus if the in-class textbooks aren't very good, and make study groups with friends in order to collaborate with them on hw assignments or upcoming exams to help make things expedite smoothly. Overall the University of Maryland: College Park earns a 4 star rating in my book.
