Most professors are nice and want to help you learn. Sadly, not all of them are actually very good at conveying their knowledge to students, but you'll have to deal with that at any school. Most of the professors are also fair in grading. You do get some though who like to give very hard tests and then have a big curve at the end. All professors are required to have office hours, so if you have any questions or would like to introduce yourself, you have the chance to. It is up to you though if you want to keep in touch with them. Because most departments are large, you may have a professor for a class and never see them again. If you do go choose to go to Maryland, definitely use www.ourumd.com. It's helped me out a lot!
