The oppurtunities that we are given as students. Not many schools have themed nights in their dinning commons just so students can try a variety of different cultures food styles. Nor do they have a career center that will go to the extent to give you mock interviews so your prepared for the real world. Even the diversity in the student population opens your eyes to the culture and world around you. The job oppurtunities given to students in need on campus or in downtown Amherst.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is a large school, but has a good engineering program. I looked at technical schools and they were excellent for their science and engineering undergraduate degrees, but they didn't feel like a really college because most of them were small. At UMass, the campus itself is a small city. There is tons of activities to do. That what really pulled me into the college rather than the other choices I had.

Breana

It is a really big campus with a lot of different academic and social pursuits.

Beth Ann

I like that even though this is such a large school, there is also a very large sense of community. Meeting people here is easy because everyone is so friendly, and I have always felt welcome. At most big schools, people don't always have that sense of connection, but I feel connected to everyone I meet here.

Dimitrios

Compared to the other colleges I've considered, my university's campus seems to offer the experience of a big campus without the hustle and bustle of living in the city. The site itself is relatively large, and yet everything is within walking distance.

Gabrielle

UMass offers so many activities, classes, jobs, etc. because of its large size. Within my major, Hospitality & Tourism Management, there are many internship and job opportunities available. We also have many student run businesses and organziations on campus, showing leadership and responsibility.

GET INVOLVED! It's the best advice you can get! In a school so big, you need to find your own identity. Whether it's with a team, club sport, RSO, Student Government, or just attending the sports events. There is something for everyone!

Jesse

I'm always shocked to see UMass ranked below a number of other schools in the New England area. This is a top notch research institution, with a great business school, and a rapidly improving student body. For this price and this quality I can't see how anyone would pay more for some of the mediocre private schools in the state.

Alexandra

The school is in a gorgeous part of New England. Every morning, I get to walk by a beautiful mountain range on my way to class and the fall colors are amazing. I grew up only an hour and a half away from campus but I still feel like the leaves in my hometown pale in comparison to Amherst. It’s not just pretty to look at, though; there’s also a ton to do both on campus and off campus. A weekend hasn’t gone by where there hasn’t been something really fun going on.

Christopher

This school is more diverse than most schools. It is a school that is more like a city in itself that gets you out of your cofort zone and the things that you were used to before you got there. It is a school that has such a rich history and the best surrounding community that is among the most cultured in the nation. Going to this school exoses you to so many different facets of life and gives you the oppurtunity to meet a lot of interesting people. This is a school that constantly stands on the cutting edge.

Susan

Most people who attend UMass now still agree with what I said about the exaggeration of negative stereotyping and the excellence of education. In a recent London Times article, UMass ranked #14 in the U.S. among public universities and FOURTH in Mass.! That is nothing to be ashamed of.

Anna

It's big and really fun

Amanda

Overall, Umass is great. Once you find the right group of friends, its definately a blast.

Matthew

I know colleges are all about bringing different types of people together, but I feel like UMass is one of a handful of school that brings a truly diverse group of students and faculty all into one place. I find this unique in that having such diversity as a school like UMass, it is like a secondary education in itself, and it's one of the main things I love taking advantage of at school.

David

Compared to other schools I have considered, the University of Massachusetts-Amherst is nicely located in a good sized city; yet the campus itself is situated so as to still give off the sensation of being a good distance from the metropolitan area. This affords a peaceful atmosphere, and yet one is still able to purchase just about anything he needs by taking a short trip to any of the local shops. Also, the University of Massachusetts offers a superior education in comparison with other colleges. To receive the best education possible enables you to be the greatest influence possible.

Annie

So many opportunities to experience what ever you want - culture, sports, travel, academic, etc

Elizabeth

One unique factor about University of Massachusetts at Amherst is the chance for students to be able to join many different extracurricular activities. There are many sports opens at many levels for students of various commitments. Clubs and groups of all kinds are always looking for new members. Fraternities and sororities are also open to new students. All of these activities are great ways to make many different kinds of friends and enjoy learning new things.

UMass Amherst is HUGE!!! Some people might see this as a bad attribute. I would have to disagree. The vast size of this amazing campus allows for such diversity. There is a large amount of diversity in the variety of majors and classes, extracurricular activities and sports, and there is such a diverse group of students. What amazes me is that despite all of the diversity, students at UMass have such a great sense of community and school spirit. It might seem too big at first glance, but somewhere on this huge campus, there is a home for every student.

Matthew

UMass-Amherst was my first choice when I transfered there. I picked it because it has well respected departments and is well run and managed. UMass-Amherst pulls off being a huge school without feeling like another drone in the crowd. That is no mean feat.

Lily

Well, I didn't really consider any other four year schools, but I did finish an Associate's Degree at the Community College of Vermont. I think that from my experience at CCV and what I know of other people's experiences at different institutions, UMass has the most resources and the most diversity of most of the schools in this area.

Sarah

Umass is part of the Five College program. This means that Umass students and students from surrounding colleges can take classes together on different college campuses (the other colleges include Smith College, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke, and Amherst College. At Umass you can get the experience of a large university but also take smaller, specialized classes at the other private colleges in the surrounding area. This allows for students to make connections with each other and professors in the larger community, not just at Umass. This program is unique to Umass and the other colleges and creates a well rounded education.

meghann

UMass Amherst has a second bachelors in nursing program which is an accelerated 17 month program.

Christopher

While I attend the University of Massachusetts Amherst I find that the availablity of opportunities for other students and I to adapt to the "real" world are vast. Each student has the availability to network with their professors creating references and opening doors to possible Research Assitantships and Teaching Assistantships. There are also many on campus job opportunitues, other than those previously stated, that allow students to build their resume's. As I have understood from fellow high school graduates these opportunies are not common in availability. I believe, for these reasons, the University of Massachusetts Amherst is unique.

c

They allow for prior learning experience to earn credits.

Shardei

at UMASS we have lots of cultural events and diverse student groups.

Meagan

My school offers specific training in the various social sciences versus a general degree. I have the opportunity to go into neurology or into clinical psychology, rather than leaving college with naught but a vague idea of what I wish to become in the future. This prepares me for graduate school so that i can become the most that I want to be in the future. Unlike other schools, UMass provides the best classes in the subjects available to all of the students.

Ryo

Since there is not much around it the school campus is the center of attention.

Ryo

I love the campus and the location of the school. In the fall, I can take walks to enjoy the beautiful colors, in the winter the snow is beautiful and in the spring everyone is outside just hanging out and playing sports. When you first come here, the size of the school could be overwhelming but once you settle in, the school just gets smaller and smaller and becomes a comfortable place.

Yevgeniy

The unique thing about this school is that it is much bigger than others that i had previously considered. The lecture halls are very big, and there are a lot of students in each class, however the seminars account for that in that the seminars only have about 20 to 30 students, and discussions are very common and accepted.

Khashif

What is unique about my school is that all your essential needs are located on campus, such as food and convenient stores.

Michael

One unique aspect about Umass Amherst thatr is different than other schools that I considered is the large campus and student population. Some say that it is too big or too anonymous for them, but I love it. A student is able to make their cllege experience as anonymous or intimate as they want. professors are always accessable and you can easily stay in touch with whomever you want. There are five distinct residential areas and a section of on-campus appartments, each with their own specific benefits. Campus is a blast. There are so many diverse people around.

Vineet

The most unique thing about this school is how diverse it is. It is easy for one to find a social circle/support system of friends.

The diversity on campus at UMass is amazing, there are so many different people that you can meet and so many different groups and activities that you can take part in it is amazing the kinds of things you can accomplish at this school. The people are welcoming a majority of the time and are willing to help you out if you are lost or for any reason at all. The campus itself is one of the most diverse and beautiful campuses I had seen in my college search.

Jason

UMASS is a large campus and it acts amlost like a city. I forget when I am here that places like Boston exisit. I feel very comfortable and safe at UMASS. I look forward to going on to campus and seeing my friends. I have visited other campuses and they all feel so disconected. They don't feel like the community that UMASS creates. The most unique thing about UMASS is its sense of community living.
