What is the stereotype of students at your school?

Gabrielle

This s the stereotype at ANY large state university, but we do have the nickname "zoomass slamherst"...

Jesse

UMass is a too big party school that no one ever gets to know each other at. It's too much like being thrown into a big city, and students don't feel connected enough to their professors and administrators.

Susan

We all know what they are: loud, drunk, partying. But this seems most prevalent in Massachusetts! When I traveled overseas, and to other states, people were impressed that I had attended UMass. Why else would students at the other 5-College campuses pay top dollar only take so many courses at "lowly" Umass? It's an excellent education!

Amanda

We party too much.

Cameron

Party School.Easy Classes.Riots.

Molly

Some stereotypes include that UMass is just a party school and its students love to drink and aren't concerned with their education.

The main stereotype is that it is a continuous crazy party with no control and complete lack of guidance and enforcement. All the students are drunks in Southwest, potheads in Central, stem from Asian decent in Northeast, unlucky freshmen in Orchard Hill, and hermits in Sylvan; these are the stereotypes for each different living area around campus.

There is definatly a stereotype about UMass being a party school. So basically that makes the students drunk idiots.

Jessica

The biggest assumption is that UMass is a party school- but one thing I've learned after my time in college is that EVERY SCHOOL is a party school! After hearing stories from friends at other schools, it seems like they party way more than kids at UMass. It might just be my group of friends, but that was my impression. Other stereotypes is that different kinds of people live in the different dorm areas. Central, the dorm area where I live, is thought to be where everyone who smokes pot lives. Southwest is thought to be the party area and where people who grew up in cities live. Northeast is thought to be where mostly people of Asian descent live.

Josiah

Umass students tend to mob.

Devin

My impressions were that UMass was a big party school and that a majority of the students were a bunch of drunks.

Erin

A steryotype in particular is the one about UMass students being dumb and just floating through school like it was middle school.

Kyle

UMass Amherst has the reputation of being the party school. Also, the people who live in certain residential areas seem to be placed there based upon stereotype. For instance the southwest residential area is rumored to be dominated by jocks, whereas central is your hippy pot-head type kid; all the living areas have certain labels.

Melissa

What the world tends to hear through the local and national media is that UMass is a school predicated more on drinking, drugs, and violence than on education. We've been in and out of the Princeton Review's top 20 drinking schools for the past few years. One TV network also said we were the most violent campus in the nation.

Andy

UMass is either not known at all (usually outside of New England), or known as a big party school. The students are stereotyped as fluzie girls and frat brothers. Most people I've met immediately were wondering how crazy we go on weekends... which gets a bit tiresome after a while.

Dan

People from South West resident quads are party animals, people from North East are Asian, and People from Central are pot heads

Meagan

That we're all crazy drunk partiers and don't do anything but riot and drink.

Jamie

UMASS is the number one party school... everyone is on drugs...

Dana

The stereotypes that exist on campus are directed toward different parts of the campus. Each living area has its own stereotype. Otherwise, the stereotype from students that don't go to UMass assume that all the UMass kids could not get into private schools, seeing as though there are an abudance of them in the Northeast.

Nicole

People think that it's just a party school.

Laura

Everyone who lives in Southwest is the type of person who gets really dressed up for class everyday, wears Ugg boots and skirts and likes to go out a lot. Sylvan is full of antisocial people. Northeast is where all the Asians live. Orchard Hill is where all the book-smart people live. Central is where all the hippies live. North is a mix of all of them.

Hunter

The biggest one is that Umass is a party school. If you're an honors student from a high school where most people are going to private $40k+ schools, then it's supposedly the "easy school".

Nicole

Alcoholics, heavy partiers, never study, bitchy girls, bro dudes

Sarah

Charlie

The stereotypes usually go around drinking and partying also Violence and Riots.

CJ

The campus is largely divided based on living areas - southwest is considered to be the party and jock area, filled with bro-heads and biddies. central is art major/eccentric area i guess, orchard hill is for the grass loving, frisbee throwing dead heads, and northeast is for the brainiacs. The only thing that seems to bring these stereotypes together is the love of the sauce.

Amy

The number one thing people say when they hear UMass Amherst is that its a huge party school.
