Describe the dorms.

Ashley

We have four towers, each with twelve floors, 20 student rooms (2 students each) and one room for the RA and one room for the AF. One bathroom is shared per floor. Each floor is same gender, but the floors alternate guy/girl. You are given a bed, mattress, closet, set of drawers, desk/chair, each room has its own thermostat.

The freshman dorms are honestly not the biggest I've seen, nor the newest, but there certainly isn't much to complain about. The closet is large enough, there are towel racks, a big dresser with a mirror and light, a desk with plenty of shelves above it. Next to the bed is what I would call a leather cushion so it is almost like a couch. Honestly, bland rooms, but can be pretty homey once you add a carpet and decorations. The bathrooms are usually clean and the hallways, once decorated by your RA, don't feel like a jail.

40 people per floor, generally two in a room, pretty small, you should bunk your beds, i had a tv and a futon freshman year along with fridge and microwave. Pretty nice compared to other colleges i visited.

I live in Mahoney. I've never lived in the freshman dorms because I'm a transfer. But the dorm rooms here are small and old. Two rooms share a bathroom. The door cant be locked, that can be bad at times when your suite-mates don't knock before they come in or when you want to use the bathroom quickly and someone is in it. Definitely not worth the money I am paying.

The dorms are typical college dorms. They aren't fancy but they give you what you need. Freshmen that live on campus share a room with another person and share a bathroom with 38 people of their same gender. The floors alternate between genders, so there is nothing like single-gender dorms or anything like that. Anytime anyone asks me if they should live on campus when they come to UM I always say yes. This is in part to how much fun and how many friends you make when you enter the dorms, especially freshman year. There are other dorms for other students (sophomores and up) that allow you more freedom and provide more amenities, including your own bathroom, a kitchen on your floor, etc. The RA's tend to be pretty nice and willing to help you, though they're not going to go easy on you if they find alcohol or drugs in your dorm room.

There are 2 freshman dorms, Hecht and Stanford and if you do not live in the Miami area you are required to live there as a freshman. The floors are divided by gender and you share a room with one other person. The rooms are pretty narrow, but they aren't too bad. They have hurricane shutters that effectively block out all sunlight which can be awesome for naps. Every floor has a communal bathroom in the center. There are plenty of showers and stalls and aside from orientation week I never had to wait to take a shower. They keep them pretty clean. There are 3 upperclassman dorms, Eaton, Mahoney, and Pearson. They are suite style dorms meaning you share a room with one person and a bathroom connects you to another room. Eaton is a lot quieter than the other two dorms. A lot of the jocks live in Mahoney and Pearson because there are floor kitchens on the 6th and 7th floors. All of the dorms have free laundry. The University Village are apartments that are owned by the school. They have single apartments, 2/2, 4/2, and 4/4 style apartments as well. You have to have 60 credits to live there but they're really nice. Everything is included and a bus runs to campus.

They aren't the worst dorms in the world and will soon be going under remodeling, so here's hoping!
