Overall, I would say that the most popular student organization would be Program Board, which helps to plan all of Miami's student events. There are so many different clubs, organizations and teams on campus, which allows everyone to find their niche. Intramural sports teams, sororities, fraternities, Program Board, professional organizations and tour guides are among the most popular ways to get involved on Miami's Campus. As for dorms, I loved living in the residence halls. Students always leave their doors open and it allows you to meet so many different people within your individual hall. Personally, I have met my closest friends through my sorority. I joined one my freshman year and I have made life-long friends that will be in my wedding one day. Every great memory at Miami I have involves them and I am so grateful for these friendships. As for the dating scene, there are always ways to meet new people whether that be different social events on and off campus. Miami is a campus that is rich with tradition and has several that students follow to a T. At the center of our campus lies Miami's seal. Legend has it that if you step on the seal, you will fail your next exam. Therefore, students NEVER step on the seal and will walk all the way around it to avoid stepping on it. As for parties off campus, there are students that do party and students who don't. Whichever choice you make, there are people who are in the same boat as you, which takes a lot of pressure off. As for sororities and fraternities, they aren't essential to enhancing your Miami experience. As a freshman, you have the opportunity to go through the recruitment process and if it is not for you, then there are PLENTY of other ways to get involved and meet new people. There are many things to do on a Saturday night that don't involve drinking such as campus sponsored events like movie nights, plays, concerts, resident hall activities and much more.

Not that I am biased but the best student organizations on campus are related to student media. I have been a part of the student newspaper The Miami Hurricane for two years now, and I have enjoyed every minute. I was involved in the newspaper in high school and wanted to continue in college. WVUM the radio, the Ibis Yearbook, and the Distraction magazine allow you to make friends and gain great skills in writing, editing, design, and copy. My best friends are from the newspaper, and I would not have it any other way. But if student media does not interest you, then one of the hundreds of groups on campus will pique your fancy. Greek life is becoming huge with new fraternities and sororities becoming chapters each year. Any of your interests will have a club. I guarantee it. Since I am from Miami, I am not usually involved in the traditional weekend outings of residents. As I understand it, Thursdays are reserved for Coconut Grove which has a good bar scene. Weekends are South Beach days. But there are plenty of places to visit with different attractions. Miracle Mile in Gables, Downtown Miami, Bayside, or venturing with friends to Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach and even the theme parks in Orlando.

There are hundreds of activities and groups on campus. The biggest group I am a part of is a fraternity. I am a new member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity on campus and this has given me a huge opportunity. Greek life has begun to takeover a way larger portion of the university then ever before. I have gotten involved with students all over campus and have helped out with huge events like Greek Week and our philanthropy Push America. Also the school hosts hundreds of awesome events on campus. Some people the university has brought to us are Billy Joel, Matisyahu, President Obama, Bill Clinton and so many more. They make it easy for students to go to these events by making them free. These events offered many opportunities to meet people. Most of the friends I made, I met freshman year in the Hecht Residential dorms, which offer one of the best experiences of meeting people. I have stayed friends with almost all of these guys and girls that I have met. My girlfriend lived on the floor above me my whole freshman year. Overall the school offers hundreds of opportunities to meet people and living in Miami offers thousands of options of things to do. You can go to South Beach if you are feeling classy. You can go downtown to just hangout or go to Key Biscayne to go to the calmer, more relaxed beaches. On Thursdays you can go to Coconut Grove, one of the hottest spots for college students. All in all this school offers more then enough opportunities to meet people, join organizations and make a difference in the world.

At University of Miami there is a club or a team for everything. We have club and intramural sports for those who fall just short of being a division I athlete. We have spirit squads if you want to be in close with the sports teams. There are at least five different types of dance teams from lyrical to salsa. There's clubs for fencing, tae kwon do, wakeboarding, video games, for those who want to give back to the community, for those who want to network in their career field. I am involved in the marching band and pep bands and it's the most fun I could ever have. Not only do I get to march on the same field as the football team but I get to personally meet the volleyball players and basketball players. Through bands I have met my best friends here and feel like I am really part of something. Being a martial artist and dancer I have done the karate club and the dance club. I am a member of Alpha Lambda Delta honor fraternity and am currently rushing the music sorority Sigma Alpha Iota. There are plenty of social sororities and fraternities, plenty of academic, professional, and service as well. There is always something to do on campus. There are movies on the green, food trucks, sporting events, farmer markets, cooking classes, fitness classes, and club meetings. Thursday - Saturday you can always find a party or something going on, but if you want to just kick back and watch movies that just came out of theaters, you can do that too. For homecoming there was a Ludacris concert and on Valentines Day, Drake kicked off his tour at our campus. There's huge tailgates for football and plenty of free food and goodies at basketball, baseball, soccer and volleyball games. If you simply don't want to do anything at all, my friends and I find ourselves either playing Frisbee or soccer on the fields or just sitting out by the lake. To show the diversity, last weekend was our Sportsfest, where teams come together and compete in everything from flag football to Wii Sports, to dodgeball, to trivia and at the end of the weekend a dorm winner is crowned. While I spent most of my Saturday and Sunday doing that, Saturday night I went into downtown Miami to club to see La Riots perform and Sunday night I went across the street from campus to get sushi with my friends. This weekend I will be at both basketball games, the beach, the mall, the library and my friend's room to watch movies. There really never is a dull moment unless you let there be.

As previously stated, greek life is popular, more and more students, especially girls, are rushing each year, we have 7 sororities (adding an 8th in the immediate future). We have 11 fraternities. Dorms are fun, alternate girl floor/boy floor, but doors are generally not left unlocked, things are stolen sometimes. Not too many things are in easy walking distance, so not much real dating for freshman, cars make life a lot easier here, although you can survive without one (me). People party often, tuesday-saturday. We have so many activities, you can really join a cub for anything, if not start your own. We give a lot of funding to organizations, making anything possible. There are always events going on at the center of campus.

Danielle

The most popular student activity would probably be frats and sororities. Greek life is pretty big mainly because it's the number one source of on campus entertainment. If you're looking for something to do on a Friday or Saturday night that doesn't involve an expensive cab ride or a fake ID, frat parties are probably your best bet. For girls, I'd say being in a sorority isn't all that important because you're more than welcome at any frat event. Visiting the frat houses and hanging out with the brothers is a great way to make friends. For guys, though, being in a frat gives you a huge boost in having a super exciting social life. Many of the dues they pay go towards taking buses to south beach and throwing killer ragers, most of which are an exclusive "brothers only". However, if you don't really care about being part of that crowd, it's not like your stuck sitting in your room. Miami is really the place to be if you're into electronic music, and most shows are 18+ and $20-$40. There's also other school sponsored activities like free movies in the cosford cinnema and plays put on by the theater department. Even kids who don't want to drink or stay out late can still find ways to have fun.

Recently, the popularity of fraternities and sororities has been on the rise, and more and more students have been registering for recruitment. Greek Life doesn't dominate campus (only about 15{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students are involved), however, and it is not at all necessary to be in a frat/sorority to have a social life, especially as a female. Sororities do not have houses, and only a few of the frats do. Different days of the week usually offer different social activities. Tuesdays and Thursdays are popular Coconut Grove nights (a local bar scene); Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays are popular South Beach club nights (many internationally famous dj's have been frequenting our clubs); and Fridays and Saturdays are typical frat party nights. There are always other activities to choose from as well, such as Brickell (a more mature, higher end bar scene), concerts, plays, guest speakers, or just staying in with friends to watch a movie. In general, people go out an average of 2-3 nights a week. In terms of campus activities, students are staunch supporters of the football team and avidly attend games at the Sun Life Stadium; basketball has also seen a rise in popularity, and in general, each sport has a decent following. There are numerous student organizations and our student body is generally very active- Dance Marathon, Relay for Life, Camp Kesem, Kaos Dance Group, etc are just a few. These organizations have a very strong presence on campus. Many students make strong friendships through their campus involvement, but also through smaller classes, living in dorms, and Greek Life.

A big part of the University of Miami experience is what happens after class hours (and in some cases, before, for better or worse). Though we are in the process of ridding ourselves of our “Sun Tan U” reputation, it is undeniable Hurricanes love to party. We are, after all, the University of Miami, and I would wager no other student body has a better time in a better city for it. Popular weekend spots for students include Coconut Grove, where going there to drink or club is affectionately referred to as “Groving”, and all of South Beach; you have not seen a beautiful beach till you’ve seen South Beach lit up at night. All of these areas are easily accessible by public transit or on-campus Zip Car service, basically a sort of car rental service for students with driver’s licenses. I myself spent last weekend in the incredibly chic and cool Miami Art District, also known as the Design District of midtown, as part of the art festival Art Basel weekend, where local artists throw open doors to their galleries and homes (often the same places) for free viewing, local bands play very cheap or free shows, and local food trucks serve hot, delicious and gourmet meals along the streets. Even better, getting drunk was not even required to enjoy this; it was entirely optional, like in any one of the many events going in Miami students can enjoy for free. UM’ theater department is an excellent program that puts on excellent shows free for students, all of which I have attended and enjoyed so far. This semester our school premiered Studio 52, Tommy Tune’s new musical, and I was able to meet writer/director Nilo Cruz when UM’s theater premiered his play Night Train to Bolina. Athletic events and Homecoming as a Hurricane are like nothing you’ve ever been a part of before, with unrivaled school spirit. As for clubs and organizations, fraternities and sororities are present on-campus but not a vital part of University life unless a student wants it to be; US News estimates about 10 percent of the male and student body respectively go Greek, so to speak. The school offers a variety of clubs and organizations that was quite frankly overwhelming for me, who went to a small charter school in high school, but a joy to become a part of. Eventually I narrowed my list down to membership of the Hurricane, the school newspaper, Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society, the Racquetball Club, and perhaps most unique and fun, the school’s Muggle Quidditch team. I say team instead of club because Hurricanes take their sports seriously, broomsticks or not. Playing against other school’s Muggle Quidditch teams is an unlikely but welcome source of fun in my University Life. There is plenty to do as a Hurricane, not all of it involving alcohol, contrary to stereotyping. You’ll be wishing for more time, not more activities. And as for the student body and dating scene, I’ll say that we may have come a long way from the days of “Sun Tan U”, but our tans still look very, very nice on all of us, and leave it at that.

Almost everyone gets amped up for home games! Students get free tickets to the student section, the school provides transportation, and when you get there you can feel the excitement. I'll always hear people talking about 'what they did last night.' Night life is a popular aspect of life, and you can always find a place to party. If partying is not your thing there is plenty else to do at night. The on-campus cinema plays movies every week, the intramural fields stay lit pretty late with people playing different sports, and the dorms are always running cool events. Lots of people are also involved in on-campus clubs, especially the sports clubs. I like table tennis so I spend a lot of my free time at those practices. Most all the clubs go to Regional and even National level competitions and are very successful.

There is a wide variety of organizations, clubs, and Greek life available to UM students. Although about 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body is in Greek like, the students tend to be involved in multiple clubs as well. There is really an organization for everyone. Some of the favorite clubs include Salsa Craze, Scuba Club, and Rock Climbing. A big UM event that happens every year is SportsFest in which all of the freshmen, most commuters, and other students participate in a campus-wide group of competitive events

Well, as I said the FEC is definitely popular, I'm involved with Caribbean Students Association and the Organization for Jamaican Unity because I'm an international student from Jamaica. Those two clubs definitely made my experience here so much better, to have people you can identify, and relate with really can change things for you. Students do leave their dorms open and that's why recently we have had some safety problems but hopefully everyone is now aware and keeps their doors locked. Football is the most athletic event. The games are HUGE and so is the school spirit! Go Canes! I My closest friends are exchange students, they are some of the ones who didn't have a set group of friends already and we're ready to meet new people. I'm here for another year so I will need to find new friends because the exchange students are only here for a year. If I'm awake at 2 am on a Tuesday I am most definitely doing work. The traditions for homecoming are nice, with the homecoming parade, boat burning , football game and concert. Apparently people party a lot but as I said before not really what I call partying and also because I'm not a heavy drinker. Fraternities and sororities apparently were bigger and so was the party scene but things are changing. I see some frats and soros being represented but its not heavy like I expected it to be. Off campus there are other schools to go , South Beach, the malls and so on so that can be really fun especially if you have friends at other schools.

Katherine

There are a wide variety of clubs on campus. You can pretty much find a club for anything you're interested in from rock climbing to book clubs to community service. I'm a member of Phi Sigma Pi National Honors Fraternity, a general honors co-ed fraternity and I love it. Most of my close friends are girls from my floor freshman year and the guys from a couple floors above us that we hung out with a lot our freshman year. The rest of my close friends are from my fraternity. I'm also a member of the rock climbing club and I was involved with Students Together Ending Poverty. There are plenty of active religious groups on campus. The freshman dorms are very social, people leave their doors open and you meet someone new every week. The upper class dorms are a little less open, people have established most of their friend groups. Freshman year it seemed like most people were interested more in partying than in dating but the dating scene isn't bad on campus. If it were 2 am on a Tuesday and I was still awake I'd probably either be studying or playing Mario Kart in a friend's room. It is a big thing to go out to Coconut Grove on Thursday nights and go bar hopping but there's plenty of other things to do on campus. Our on campus theater shows free currently released movies every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. The pool is a popular place to hang out in between or after classes on the weekend. We are a 15 minute drive from South Beach and a 5 minute drive from several big shopping areas.

I would say the most popular student groups are the Greeks! Haha. But seriously, the greeks know how to have fun, the student government is pretty active and successful, U R Awesome goes around giving people high-fives and smiles (and umbrellas to those without when it randomly rains), Hurricane Productions occasionally brings cool performances like Ludacris, Wiz Khalifa, NERD (but they could do more and bring better... we are The "U" after all)...oh any anyone who knows how to throw an awesome tailgate on game day is popular!

There are thousands of universities and hundreds of D1 athletic programs but only one can be called the []_[]. D1 sports games are a ton of fun and are huge social events. The milkshakes at the baseball games are to die for and football tailgates are so fun alumni come back every year to join in on the festivities. Greek life isn't that big but most students that are a part of it really take it seriously. Frats host a lot of parties but they aren't the main event. Sororities dont have houses so their presence is even smaller but most charity events on campus are sponsored by some greek organization. The biggest party night is Thursdays in the grove but you can find ways to go out almost every night here. Most students go off campus on the weekends since there are so many things to do. The best thing to do is go to the beach. Crandon Park in Key Biscayne is a beautiful beach perfect for hanging out and grilling. Frats often host beach days and take buses out to the beach bringing soccer balls, plenty of food, and music. The biggest event of the year is Ultra in march. Everyone gets dressed up in neon, rave attire and cleans out American Apparel every year to rock out to some the worlds best techno music.

Greek life is terrible. HAZING DOES HAPPEN. Sammy (the Frat) made the guys that rushed last year eat live gold fish. They say that UM has an absolute no hazing policy but that is absolutely, absolutely not true. Also, it is all based on who you know. Unless you have a friend in a certain frat or sorority, you are likely not to get in. Also, all the sororities have superficial steryotype. Like the Kappa Kappa Gammas are known as having the ugly girls, others were known for having the stupid blond girls, the rich stuck up girls (DG), etc. It was all very fake and not a welcoming environment. In terms of diversity, you can meet people from all around the world, but apart from that EVERYONE is the same. Every girl has the same shoes, shorts, bag, sweatshirt, hair style, personality, etc. A lot of times I felt I was walking through a crowd of clones. At first I liked it, because I felt like I fit in. But once I realized that there was literally no one that was different, I started to get bored and annoyed with the student body. There are a lot of foreign kids, but they all stick together. Those who are from China are often made fun of by UM students which I thought was very cruel. The campus tries to keep students safe by making you scan your Cane card at every turn, but I would still not walk alone there past 9 PM. There is some drug use that goes on here, but the more prevalent problem is the heavy, almost disgusting drinking that goes on all the time (not only on weekends, but every night). I think its fine to drink and have a good time, but when people are drinking so much they black out all the time, its no longer fun. Alchohal posioning is a regular occurance here. It's not the fun, typical college atmosphere. It's cut throat, all based on looks, and if you're not completely trashed before you go out, you likely will taking care of all your horribly drunk friends who are. As a girl, I must also mention that you nearly have to sell yourself to get into a lot of parties, etc. Everyone dresses like a slut, and is done up to the nines every time they go out and night. If you're not, you can be turned away, even from frat parties. Looks are all that matter here, so if you don't look good, you're not allowed to have a good time. You are literally stuck on campus, where nothing happens, unless you get a cab, which to south beach can cost up to $42. My dorm had bugs, though I knew people who had worse. A couple girls I knew switched rooms because of cocroches. Also, ALOT of people got sick because of the A/C being on full blast all the time. It is also way to easy to get a roommate switch. All it took was the signing of a form. People switched roommates multiple times during the year only so that they could room with whom ever they were friends with for that month. I couldn't believe it was allowed. My RA was also very unqualified. He was an overall nice guy, but often hit on a lot of the girls and would just be inappropriate. I didn't feel comfortable going to him for any problem since he had already picked out who on the floor he like and who on the floor he didn't.

Alex

the freshman dorms are a great first experience at UM. they are really social and make it super easy to make friends. athletics are pretty popular here, especially the football games. the U also offers intramurals and club teams in pretty much every sport...from volleyball to water polo to dodgeball to flag football to table tennis. when people party here, there is a lot of beer pong action and flip cup. also, a lot people go to the bars in coconut grove or the clubs on south beach.

Andy

football, baseball, and basketball teams are popular and have large fan base. like i said earlier... greek life is a disappointment. everyone seems to be in it for the wrong reasons (at least the sororities). sororities&frats are not that important - it does not determine social life it's more like an extracurricular optional thing that not that many ppl get involved in football games are HUGE and lots of fun and extremely popular lots of big guest speakers that are usually through pres. donna shalala with all her amazing connections at 2am on a tuesday, i would be at tavern - this packed crappy little college bar in the grove. met friends thru sorority great concerts - this year we had afroman, girl talk, talib kweli ppl party all of the time, u can always find someone partying each night of the week. like tues&thurs are cocunut grove/bar nights, fri&sat are house parties, frat parties, or south beach, sun&mon&wed south beach or chill party off campus - shopping is amazing there are SO many places to go, tons of world famous restaurants and clubs, beaches are gorgeous, art district and design district are funky and interesting to explore, brickell/downtown has a little village area with great restaurants... so many places to explore and love in miami

Carlos

I don't know about the dorms, but if you live off campus, it's jumping off! Throw a rock in any direction on a weekend and you hit a party. Greeks have events going on almost everyday! Miami girls are beautiful and there's just so many of them you won't know what to do! If you're sober, there's always the malls and the movies and likewise, they are always stocked full of hotties. On campus, we have world class speakers on an almost constant basis. The Dalai Llama, Al Gore, Ben Stien, corporate leaders, and many others are on heavy rotation at the U. When football season in on, it's on. The Orange Bowl maybe gone but that just means we take the party up north to Weston to cheer the Canes at Dolplhins Stadium!

Joe

Last weekend... On Thursday I went to the Grove with some of my fraternity brothers. On Friday I gave a tour of campus to prospective students, went to work, and drank some beer at the Rat. On Saturday I went to the beach during the day, and went to Swamp Stomp at Key Biscayne that night. Swamp Stomp is a concert held at an outdoor venue with a bunch of local bands and cheep beer. On Sunday I relaxed, did a little homework, and had some friends over for dinner. My typical weekend usually goes something like that.

Alison

There are tons of student organizations on campus and if you don't see what you want then you can start the group yourself! Sororities and fraternities are important on campus, but not in an overwhelming way. Greeks are involved everywhere on campus and make up most of student government. But, if going Greek isn't your thing, there are plenty of other ways to get involved. Students are typically friendly. Sporting events are packed with students (especially football -- it's a dynasty!). A typical student who goes out will typically do so from Thursday-Saturday (at least) while still making time for studies and other activities.
