University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Top Questions

Now that I'm in college there are a few things I wish I would have perfected or known. First, I wish I would have learned how to study in a way that worked best for me. Secondly, I wish I would have known that professors aren't scary and that it's worth your while to talk to them during their office hours even if you don't have a question about the reading or any homework. Good study habits and forming a relationship with your professors are two mandatory tools for success in college.

I wish I had known how how it is to find a good adviser.

I wish I'd known how hard it is to get As on the honors track. I had to drop out because my GPA was too low for graduate schools to consider me.

I wish I would have known that even though it is a large campus and there is a lot of diversity, it does not necessarily make it easier to meet people. Sometimes I feel it would have been easier to meet people at a smaller school.

I wish i had known how much it actually cost to recieve a good education, that way i would have been able to save my money. Maybe that way i wouldn't have needed to get a student loan.

How crappy the charge fees are. How they take like 1k or more off from stupid fees that we don't benifit from.

I wish I had known to get a job as early in the semester as possible, because the online job search doesn't get back to you about positions on campus until at least a month later, which is very annoying. This applies to jobs on-campus--I should have just started working at UDS right away while I waited for responses on other positions. Not the ideal job, but it's easy money.

I probably would have considered attending another school the Uof M does not have an undergraduate social work program. My major of family social science does not allow me to be a licensed social worker. However, the services of the parent student help center were wonderful, and the support of fellow student parents was invaluable. I'm not sure I would have done so well without this help. The school is very large, but the community at the Student Parent Help Center is amazing. I would recommend utilizing services at the Student Parent Help Center for student parents.

Not to ever incounter the Economics Department. They dont care about their students at all and do not accomodate when it is necessary to do so.

I wish I had known that people here are really willing to help if you are willing to ask for it. There are many resources and different ways to get involved on campus, but you need to go out and find them. Also, there are many research opportunities for undergraduates, and as long as you are persistent faculty members are very willing to give great advice.

How to get more involved in extra curriculars faster.

Where student parking lots were, where I could get a copy of a campus map, and where different retaurants are around campus.

Nothing.

What my primary major would be. I would have taken more classes in high school that were relavant to my major.

That I would end up wanting to get more into business and gone into Carlson rather than the school of Journalism.

I wish that I would have lived on campus instead of off campus all four years.

I just wish that I had a better understanding of what I wanted to do before I jumped right in and took classes that I really didn't need to take like chemistry and calculus.

I have no regrets

That once you graduate the school really could care less about you. If you are not a student they really do not help you. Job placement was nonexitstant.

I am from Minnesota, I was born here so I knew a lot about the school when it came to applying for colleges. I wish I would have known how small the dorm rooms are and how big/small the greek life was. I knew the school very well coming into it.
