University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Kris

No, only 82{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body is from North Carolina (as mandated by the state legislature).

Carrie

Absolutely!

Kathy

These stereotypes definitely aren't true! Though we DO keep it classy, most of the people here are not snotty, and there are plenty of students (including myself) working their way through college with two or even three jobs. As far as sports fans go, sometimes the older crowd (that gets priority seating in the dean dome) are a little quiet, but the students are as rowdy as they come.

Adam

In most cases it is true. Student led discussions are often very liberally biased, which makes it difficult to properly portray all of your thoughts.

Andre

The Good Stereotypes--Our campus is beautiful, and one of the best I have ever seen. Chapel Hill is nice, but, unfortunately, is feeling the pain of being not that far from a Wal-Mart and a Target, and thus many of the local shops are closing. But there are still plenty of cheap eats and a great night scene. Everyone at Carolina is passionately in love with it, but it would be misleading to say that every single person is 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} satisfied by it. People at UNC are nice. In fact, we call it the Carolina Way; where we create a community in which we are all neighbors and work together for advancement. The Bad Stereotypes--We are the flagship university for North Carolina, so we will have some of the top achievers from within the state and from out of state, and due to this, there will probably be a few more dochebags here than at UNCG or Charlotte. As far as the second stereotype, some people will fall into typical Southern stereotypes, but they will definitely be a minority.

TJ

Some people are but on the whole most people are there for 3 reasons: To get a degree or get into graduate school. Or party, leave home and spend their parents money but not in tht order.

Kim

sure.

Emily

A lot of UNC students are very academically focused and do spend a lot of time in the library doing school work. However, these people still often make time for social events and parties. There are also students who are not very grade-focused at all and these students are not rare. Also, students at UNC are (as a whole) very involved in clubs in organizations so there is still a lot going on and a lot of ways to get involved and meet other students. I do not know how liberal the campus is, but it feels very welcoming to new ideas and there are sometimes protests. A lot of UNC students LOVE basketball season (go heels!) but I know some people who are not interested in basketball at all and still love the school, so not being a basketball fan isn't the end of the world. A lot of sororities exist on campus, so there is definitely a greek life. However, you definitely meet a LOT of people who are not part of that scene so it should not be a main concern if that is not your thing. As for the "prep" part of it...a lot of people here do dress pretty fashionably for classes - skirts, dresses, peals, make up, nice hair.

Kathy

No, very open and welcoming campus, even for us older students.

Ash

While there are students with money, scholarship programs ensure that the student body is quite diverse in terms of financial standing (as well as other demographics). I can't lie - a lot of people do drink alcohol, and some could be considered alcoholics. However, there are also a lot of people who don't drink, or who only drink occassionally. Drinking is not necessary to socialize, but it is common. Greek life on campus is really popular with a lot of students, but there are plenty of people who don't join frats or sorrorities, and their social lives do not suffer. You might consider many of us to be overachievers. It depends on your definition of "over-achiever." Pre-med students and students in the Business School are most likely to earn this label, but I'm sure a lot of us could fit into that category. The stereotype that most people don't just have one major is pretty true. You won't get judged negatively if you only have one major, but there is definitely a big percentage of the student body who have a minor, a second major, or both. Many UNC students are elitists about our basketball team, but only because we're the best.

Jordan

I believe that all of the stereotypes are accurate, though the football team is improving.

Ryan

Somewhat. Compared to other schools in the area our student base is liberal, but we have students from all policial backgrounds at our school; however, most of the activism that is present on campus does deal with more liberal points of view. For the South, we do have a strong GLBTQ community. For some students this will come as a shock, but for most students it will be a fantastic learning experience, being around students who are different from those whom they went to high school wtih. And yes, for the most part UNC students are intelligent; however, there's always that kid in your lecture or recitation whose acceptance you question.

There is a good amount of students coming from wealthy backgrounds and families, but this stereotype is definitely unfair to be placed solely on UNC students. Being that you receive a liberal arts education here, UNC attracts a HUGE variety of people, and I'm proud to be a part of a university that is so diverse. All kinds of backgrounds are represented here, so it is just ignorant that people claim we're a stuck up school. If we're stuck up at all, it's because we're proud of being a part of this university, as we should be. Not all of the guys at Carolina are gay or lacking in masculinity, but compared to other schools I have on the campuses of, we tend to attract more frat-guy types. The girls at Carolina are INDEED the best-looking in the state ;-).

Lauren

Like all stereotypes, there is some truth to it... but there is a good mix of students!

Andrea

Yeah

Shane

yes

John

Pretty true for the most part. We do what is necessary and have as much fun as possible when we arn't hitting the books.

Katie

Not really

Jessica

Just because UNC is a liberal arts college doesn't mean everyone is liberal. I have friends with all different political views and opinions. UNC students aren't conceited...we're just proud to be Tar Heels!

Christina

Fairly accurate... A large majority of people I encountered were from a middle-upper class background, but overall its a pretty diverse group There is a large amount of drug activity that goes on, almost to the point where its easier to get drugs than alcohol when your underage The greek life is preppy, but a lot of people have their own style Overall, the campus is more liberal than conservative, but the students are pretty equally divided There is not as many gay men as I expected

Alex

Yes, the school is predominately white but they have a high percentage of minorities for a public university in NC and when you ingross yourself in the community you will find amazing peeople/friends of whatever race you want No, it can be a party school if you want it to be, but that's at any college/university. The good thing about UNC however, is it also holds high credentials after college in the workforce No, it is possible to get in even if you don't have perfect grades because they look at you as a whole --extracurriculars and jobs or certain things you've had to overcome to get where you are so really use the essays fot that Racism is everywhere, even at colleges and universities. It is no more so than the rest of North Carolina/the south and that is part of growing up as a minority individual in any culture

Brian

Many of the stereotypes are true to a degree. The university is definitely a liberal arts school, but this affords students many opportunities and almost forces you to become well-rounded as a student before you graduate. The homosexual population on campus is certainly more visible than it is on other campuses in the area, but this allows our student body to demonstrate an attitude of acceptance, tolerance, and brotherhood within the Carolina family. Greek life is also prominent on campus, but the fraternities and sororities do a lot for the community and do not overwhelm the rest of the student body.

patrick

sort of. the greek students are obnoxious elitist assholes, and they're the ones people are judging us by. and yes, the girls are ridiculously hot.

Nicole

There are many "preppy" students, but outside of the greek life, they are not snobby or immature. There are lots of pre-med and pre-law students, but the school is great for pretty much everything. You don't have to be one of those two things to obtain a great education.

Whitney

kinda

Rebecca

Not particularly. There are pronounced conservative and moderate elements that even out the loud liberal rhetoric on campus. On a campus of roughly 26,000, it would be very impressive if everyone were Greek. Your life on campus is as personal as you make it. If you don't put any effort into making friends, joining organizations, or participating in any activities, then you will have a rather boring life. It might actually take more work to not have a student life than it does to make one.

Kathryn

No, everyone I have ever met at UNC is incredibly talented and bright. There are some who are more inteliigent than others or that take academics more seriously but overall everyone is pretty accepting of other people

Mike

1. True. Although the student section can get very loud and rambunctious, the rest of the crowd (alumni, other fans) are usually pretty dull and quiet. As a student, it's unbelievable to be at a big game in the student section, but it'd be better if the whole Dean Dome had the same attitude. 2. False. There is a strong gay/lesbian community, but it's not as pronounced as I was expecting coming in as a freshman. 3. True. It may be that the liberals are more outspoken, but it did seem to me that there were more liberals at UNC than conservatives (which is about average for a school like UNC). There are, however, some outspoken conservatives and a fairly strong UNC Republican group on campus. 4. True. Just visit the UNC Basketball Hall of Fame (next door to the Dean Dome). Prepare to be there for at least two hours so you can take it all in. 5. True, kind of. Like any college, there will be groups of students who have this sort of attitude. I wouldn't say that UNC has more than any other school. Most of them, in my experience, were in the Greek community (that isn't to say that all Greeks act this way - I have lots of friends in Frats/Sororities who are really cool).

Natasha

Of course there is a degree of accuracy with every stereotype, and a school that has 16,000 undergrads is going to have both of these types of students, but UNC is so much more. UNC is whatever you want it to be.

Matt

The students tend to be preppy, but there is a large conservative sect at the school.

Gene

Basically.

elizabeth

nope. well, yes and no. there is a large greek population here but it's a 27,000 member student body so if fraternities and sororities aren't your thing you never have to go within 100 yards of frat court. UNC's diversity has become the thing i love most about this campus; the students here really range widely in just about every category imaginable. there are conservative kids but there are just as many liberal ones and we have every sort of demographic imaginable. it's like living in a new york without the rent and the traffic.

Ashley

Probably about half and half....it's true enough to be a stereotype in the first place.

Meredith

Yes

Dale

In some sororities and fraternities yes, but on the whole, no. Chapel Hill is a very down to earth place if you speak to people one on one. I'm prould to be a graduate of this prestigious university.

Ellie

Yep!

Bryce

The majority of the students at UNC are intelligent, and a minority do overrate their intelligence. The latter stereotype is mostly true.

Erin

to a certain extent, all stereotypes are. the duke rivalry is definitely palpable on campus. a lot of students to party a lot, but there are also students that don't party at all.

Erin

yes

Casey

Yes, 82{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the population is in state students, but as an out of state student I had no problem making friends, and did not feel excluded due to the fact that I was not a NC native

Andrea

The school does come alive during basketball season but that doesn't mean it's dead for the rest of the year. We love Roy's boys but UNC is a university first and a basketball team after that. As for the education, we have Nobel Prize winners and the man that invented capillary electrophoresis teaching classes every day so you can judge from there.

Erin

Preppy, yes carolina is a lifestyle and most students tend to dress preppy Stuck Up, carolina students are not stuck up, everyone is extremely nice, if you go to carolina it changes you and you know there is no place you'd rather be.

Jessica

yes

Maria

There are some of each of those types here, there are rich kids, sports fans, preppies, and over-intellectuals but we aren't all every single one of those. I don't consider myself to be any of those, and I'm staying here happily.

Valerie

We are a very liberal school, but never have i seen a diverse campus such as this. We, the student body, are open to new ideas. We invite people with different thoughts so that we too may become worldly. Students are not snobby, there are students that are, but one could find that anywhere, it is best to come here open minded that stereotype a certain type of person due to their economic or socio background. We are very fortunate to have the best basketball team in the world, whether win or lose, the Tarheels are number 1! WE, are a party school, we have the p2p which are the ultimate safe-party buses and have very fun, sociable students that know how to have fun.

Kelly

sometimes

julia

yes

Whitney

some but not all

Emily

Not all students in the Greek life are preppy, there is a very diverse population. Most UNC students do love basketball. UNC students working hard and partying hard isn't accurate, it depends on the individual.
