What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Greek life has a large presence on campus. I am very biased against greek life, so I won't say more. There is a HUGE emphasis on sports, especially men's basketball and some football, and also women's soccer and basketball. Sporting events are a lot of fun and there is a lot of school spirit on campus. I like to go out a lot and drink, so a typical weekend for me I go drinking with friends. However, I'm sure there are things to do for non-drinkers. Cats Cradle is a fun place to hear bands and although there is a bar, you can have a great time there in a laid back setting.

Alex

There is so much to do at UNC that there is not enough time in the day. During Fall Fest, the annual festival at the beginning of the year; students can sign up for any and all clubs that they are interested in. My favorite activities were the Dance Marathon (a 24 hour event that benefits the Childrens Hospital at UNC) and Club Lacrosse. There are club sports for all kinds of athletes. I lived in the dorms for 3 years and loved each year. The halls and suites in the dorms are all very social, but I have a certain affinity for the hall system. Some of my best friends were from my years living in the dorms. Athletics are a huge part of the UNC experience. Getting a basketball ticket was pretty difficult but it granted you access to see a great team play in a great venue. I was also able to see several great speakers and performances while at UNC such as Ben Stein and Mo Rocca (from the Daily Show). Parties at UNC are never hard to find. About 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} (1 in 5) people at UNC is involved in the Greek system so you will be exposed to this and are free to join if you would like. I did not but knew plenty of people who were in frats and sororities. The Cat's Cradle and Local 506 are also nearby in Carrboro where you can see live music. The golf course is about a mile away and is amazing as well as affordable for students. There is a huge mall about 5 miles from campus that students can take buses to. Oh and the buses in Chapel Hill are FREE.

Cara

I'm on the Club Soccer team and I really enjoy it. I have made a lot of good friends and it helps me to stay in shape. I think it is important to get involved in something in order to keep busy and to really feel like you are part of this school and doing something to better it. In dorms students leave their doors open but do not leave them unlocked. The beginning of the year is key cause it is hot and not all rooms have AC, so doors are almost always open. This makes it much easier to approach a hallmate or suitemate in order to start making new friends. I met my closest friends in my dorm. I was not looking forward to living on South Campus because it is about a 15 minute walk to class everyday and not all the dorms have air conditioning. But I am so glad that I lived there. I have met some of my best friends in Ehringhaus and would highly recommed it to anyone going to UNC. People party pretty frequently. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are usually the biggest days. Fraternities and sororities can be a big deal. It really all depends on how big of a deal you make them. I tended to go to frat parties because I am not old enough to go to bars and I don't have a house to have people over to. I was not in a sorority and I had a wonderful Freshman year.

Jody

Basketball is by far the most important and popular sport at Carolina. There is also a great deal of theatrical venues and performances. Some kids party every night, and some only party about once a week; some do not party at all. As a whole, Carolina has quite the party scene

Brittnie

Athletic events are the most popular. Basketball being the very most popular since we are almost always within the top 5 in the nation. Tues night is $5 blue cups at He's Not. Everyone is out at the bar or coming home at 2 am on Tuesdays. Dating can be a challenge, for girls anyways. The university is 60/40 female and is heading towards 70/30. Many people party like it's their job. Tues, Thurs, and Saturdays are the biggest nights. You can typically find a good group out just about any night of the week besides Mondays. Campus is pretty much the center of things. Off campus doesn't have much to offer (besides the mall) unless you head to the beach (2 hrs) or mountains (3 hrs).

I am not kidding you when I say that we could write a set of encyclopedias on UNC activities and the social life on campus. When you arrive for your orientation, you will receive a bunch of information about UNC activities, but here is the abridged version. Besides the obvious... athletics, we have many other awesome extracurriculars. You could become a ballroom dancer, an amazing actor through our many theater groups, a phenomenal singer with our many vocal groups, or you could become involved in the many service groups. Because we so diverse, there is an organization and there are campus activities for everyone. Social Life:... It's fun. Aside from all of the amazing Frats and Sororities which throw awesome parities all year long, we have the infamous Franklin Street. There is a magic to this legendary avenue. 1) Halloween - to explication necessary. 2) The clubs - Players, The Library, East End, and more! 3) The home of the world's greatest fashion designer - Alexander Julian. He continues to operate a world class boutique that is a favorite place for many students. He is expensive, but worth it, after all... he has won 5 Coty awards! 4) The food: TOPO - Top of the Hill Franklin Pizza & Pasta Jack Sprat Sugarland a.k.a. your best friend BSKI's Gumby's - Pokie Stix are a must. Trust me on this one. Spanky's Peppers Pizza Hams Carolina Brewery 411 West - Awesome! The Lantern - Date night Mama Dips - After church. This is grandma's homecookin' ... many, many more!!!

Liz

I always felt there were things to do in Chapel Hill. Coming from GA, I have spent a lot of time in Athens at UGA. I can honestly say, there is so much more to Chapel Hill than your average college town. I spent alot of my time at extracurricular activities- namely Club Gymnastics and volunteering at the women's center. There were always music events, dance performances, lectures, etc to go experience! And the greatest thing is the weather- I was always outside on the quad playing frisbee or going for a bike ride.

Caroline

UNC is both academically and socially demanding. Thursday night has become the new Friday and Tuesday nights are almost equally wild. The bar scene is stellar, the frat parties are abundant, and dorm life is extremely social (if you are on south campus.) Greek life is prominent at UNC but there is socially something for everyone. Intramurals and club sport options are extensive, religious clubs are everywhere, and Carolina spirit pervades it all. Whether you live on or off campus, the Carolina community always feels like home and there is always something to do.

Megan

Fraternities and sororities are very popular on campus although if you are not a part of one you can definitely be involved in other activities. Franklin Street is a lot of fun at night for peple who are over 21, although a lot of students who are underage can hang out at other places. Yes, people party although everyone puts in the required effort for school.

Nico

People are also really well rounded so it was never an issue when we wanted to get out and let loose or get in a good run or frisbee game. When I lived on south campus as a freshman everybody bonded over the fact we were in the oldest farthest dorms and we loved it. You'd walk around and just meet people everywhere. People threw parties in their dorm rooms as long as you had a laid back RA. You can always find people going to UNC athletics matches in all sports or heading to see an interesting speaker talking about big global issues or just going to hang out on the quad or attend meetings where you got free food. My friends and I often lamented to lack of good male dating material and I ended up in a serious relationship with a guy at a different college, so whatever that means! I live in an off-campus house of seven beautiful, funny girls. None of us are sorority girls, although each one of us nearly joined one at the beginning. Everyone is super-involved, very friendly, we throw lots of small parties at the house and hit the town, and throw a few all out bashes where everyone shows up. We spend lots of nights up late studying and pull quite a few all-nighters. Some of us are bio majors with doctor ambitions, others are journalism and business majors, even a theater major who keeps us entertained and going to all the great plays on campus. Honestly, I'd say that we have the very best balance you could want. People work hard, play hard, get over-involved, like to take it easy.. I never want to leave!

Adam

The social life aspect of college was my favorite part of UNC. It was the best four years of my life, and I struggled/am struggling with letting it go. UNC has a great night life and party scene. If you want to go out, somebody is always going out. Any night of the week you can find something to do, but you never want to miss a Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. You don't want to miss opportunities to spend spring and fall afternoons on Bob's porch, go to sporting events where your team is always in the top 10, if not winning championships, be on Franklin St. with 70,000 other people on Halloween, or any of the other great experiences that make up your 4 years at UNC. You don't have to be involved in a greek organization either to have a good time. I wasn't, and I promise you there was no shortage of fun. You have to work hard, but there is ample opportunity to play just as hard as you work.

Kris

UNC is a work hard play hard kind of place. You're not likely to find anyone who doesn't spend considerable time on academics, but you're also not likely to find someone who doesn't go out at least once or twice a week. Generally, the big bar/party nights are Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Friday is sort of date night. Bars are open until 2 and there is late night food to be had until 3 or 4. Athletic events are huge, especially basketball games (enough said), though football, baseball, lacrosse, and womens' soccer and basketball bring out crowds as well. The campus is about 15 - 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} greek, so the fraternities are fairly prevalent. You will likely find a fraternity party every day during rush in the fall and after that they become fewer in number, though there is still at least one more or less every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, though they are not officially open events, and fraternities are not required to let everyone in. For the most part the school socially has a bar culture thanks to franklin street. Those who are able, either because they're 21 or because they have a fake ID, are likely to choose bars over house parties, etc.

Jamie

Greek life is big at Carolina, but the parties are generally very inclusive. Basketball games are popular but because tickets are so scarce most people watch them in dorms/houses/apartments. Girls complain a lot about the dating scene because of the girl/guy ratio.

Carrie

Perhaps the one downside to Carolina, being a woman, is the 60-40 ratio of women to men. It makes the dating scene a little challenging but not impossible. On the upside, there are always a thousand things to do at Carolina--speakers, sports events, concerts, parties, you name it. Halloween is always a huge celebration, regularly drawing 50,000 people or more to Franklin Street. Greek life is also good here; it hovers around 18{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} so that people who want to join sororities or fraternities aren't totally out of the norm but people who don't are by far in the majority. It's a good balance. People party all the time, but it's also totally accepted to stay in for a night to get some work done. Most students understand that (especially around midterms or finals).

Adam

I enjoyed the social life very much. Sporting events are pretty big here. Basketball is the king of November-April. You can always find a party, it just depends on who is going to be there. Greek life is definitely present here, but one can do without it if they are not interested.

Andre

Some of the largest groups on campus are: Intervarsity (a Christian group), the Black Student Movement, Campus Y, and intramural sports. Some of the most influential groups on campus are: The Daily Tar Heel (the student newspaper), Student Government (our Congress, President, and Honor Court), CUAB (Carolina Union Activities Board-they arrange various events on campus, including FallFest and weekly movies at the Union), CAA (Carolina Athletic Association-they are the student liaisons to the Athletic Department, and determine the ticket distribution system for Men's Basketball), RHA (Resident Housing Association-works to increase the quality of on-campus housing).

Emily

We have some great singing groups - Clef Hangers and Acordants are two of the main male singing groups. The Lorelies is a popular female singing group. There are also co-ed groups and these groups perform at a lot of campus events. GAA (general alumni association) is a good organization to be involved in because you only pay 20 dollars and you receive discounts off of places on franklin street, a free tshirt, a free item (which has been a water bottle, bag, coffee mug etc in the past) and free events to attend that are meant to bring students together. A lot of people join this organization. The Campus Y is also a great organization. It includes several organizations within it dedicated to social justice. You can pick the organization that you are the most interested in.

Kathy

I have participated in many events for the school of public health, sorry, I am old---- minimal social life.

Ash

Some popular groups on campus are the various dance teams (eg hip hop groups like Kamikazi and Misconceptions, salsa group Que Rico, a modern dance group, etc), political groups, social action groups (eg Habitat for Humanity), honor societies, publications, etc. Our basketball team is definitely the most popular team on campus, and UNC's basketball spirit is amazing (especially with our rivals, Duke, just down the road). A lot of people also go to see guest speakers, theater events, and nearby concerts. There are tons of ways to make friends: in classes, in the dorms, on Franklin street, school clubs, parties, random encounters. I met my best friend through the potluck roommate assignment, and another best friend at an ice cream place on Franklin Street. If I'm awake at 2am on a Tuesday, I'm either studying, writing a paper, trying to fall asleep, talking to a friend, or getting ready to leave a bar. (I'm 21, and bars in Chapel Hill have events a few nights a week.) Drinking isn't necessary though, even on weekends. On Saturday nights I've done things like going to bed at 10pm, going to parties, getting ice cream, visiting my parents or a friend's parents, hanging out in a friend's room, going to concerts, going on an impromptu drive to the beach with a few friends, going out dancing, writing a paper, watching movies with my roommate, going to dinner with friends, etc. Like I've said, a lot of people do drink, but there are plenty of other options.

Jordan

There are loads of activities to be involved in at UNC. If you are not an athletic (but were you highschool) then you can try out for a club team or play intramural sports. Along with that, there are two gyms which are both open until 12 and offer great fitness classes ranging from yoga to kickboxing and even to Zumba (African styled dance). I am not so much into the whole sorority and fraternity scene, so I would rather not comment on that. But I am involved in student organizations, such as Unite For Sight. We help with the underpriveleged in the community and give free eye exams, as well as collect donated glasses to make new (free) glasses for those who can't afford them. So, even if you don't join a sorority or fraternity you can still be involved in the community.

Jenny

You have to get involved somehow if you are out of state-- if not you are going to feel very lost. There are many ways to do this. I think the easiest of which is joining a sorority or fraternity but this also confines you because the school is very split (greek and non-greeks) This may just be true as a freshman, i can't speak on older years.

Ryan

The Greek life at UNC is very active. Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night you can basically find some frat that's having a hall crawl, kegger, pj party, etc. So if you're looking to drink, no worries. You'll find something. We also have Franklin Street right above north campus that is home to Players (a club) and several bars. We have over like 300 clubs so anything that you may possibly be interested in is probably covered in one of the clubs. Some of the most active are the BSM (Black Student Movement), GAA (General Alumni Association), Frats, Sororities, and the millions of fundraising groups (Dance Marathon, Relay for Life, etc.) Traditions-Exam week houses some of my favorite traditions. The night before the first set of finals a group of guys streak in the library. The Clef Hangers (an a capella group) perform at the Old Well the last day of class. Things to do that don't involve drinking-UNC always has different performers coming into town. If there's nothing at the University, Cat's Cradle in Carrboro always has great bands coming to perform. The GAA also sponsors recently released movies to screen for free for students every Friday and Saturday in the Student Union.

Blake

If you want it, there's quite a good bar and party scene. Fake IDs are very common, and if you can get your hands on one as an underclassmen, you can get into a lot of bars and have a lot of fun. House parties happen sometimes, too, as long as you know people holding them. Most people are involved in some sort of organization. I did Dance Marathon which was my favorite thing in the world and became my life. I met incredible best friends, found a good cause to devote all of my energy to, and helped thousands of people and children at the NC Children's Hospital. Other groups people do are ballroom dancing, campus aerobic groups, intramural teams, Carolina Fever (supports sports teams), Black Student Movement, SANGAM (for Indians), CHiSPA (for Hispanics), and tons of religious-affiliated groups.

Brittany

There is an amazing amount and variety of extracurricular activities, and limitless opportunities for students to get plugged into organizations that fit their personalities and interests.

Lauren

Franklin Street has everything you would ever need for a social life! There are several bars and great restuarants right off campus. When the basketball team beats "Dook" or wins the national championship (2005!!) everyone rushes Franklin! The Greek scene is also very popular at Carolina... you can always find parties at the frat houses. The amount of groups/organizations/clubs that UNC offers is amazing! The intermural champion t-shirts are a highly coveted commodity on campus, and Campus Rec offers so many different sports for students to play. Since I do not drink very often, it was important for me to have other accessible things to do on the weekends. There is a great mall and movie theater 10 minutes from campus. Chapel Hill is very close to Raleigh and Durham, so you can easily venture into other cities. Going to sporting events is also popular at Carolina. We have one of the very best athletic departments in the country!

Andrea

Athletic events are huge. The dating scene sucks because of the skewed guy to girl ratio, especially African Americans. People party alot fraternities and sororities are big. If you dont feel like drinking you can still go to parties or ice skating, movies, just hanging out.

Shane

The social life here is amazing. A guy just joined our fraternity after transfering from Wake Forest because he said there was no social life. The Greek system is amazing and we have a lot of fun, but there are many other great organizations to get involved with. Some of the people i consider my best friends are people I met in my dorm freshman year. Even though football isn't that good here (its on the rise just watch) people still love going to games on Saturdays and everyone loves basketball games. There is a lot of pride at this school, in athletics and academics. Having grown up in NC, no matter who you talk to everyone agrees that UNC is a great school and only Duke fans say that our basketball team sucks. If drinking is your thing then Franklin St. and Rosemary St. have a lot to offer. No matter what night you are looking to go out there is always something to do. If drinking is not your thing the University offers many activities such as movie nights, and general hang out events. There are also live music events around Chapel Hill and plays at local theaters.

Jessica

You can't go wrong with any of the activities on campus. If you're a sports fan, join Carolina Fever! I've been in Fever since my freshman year and met my closest friends at the sporting events. If you're a partier, there's plenty to do, and if you're not, you won't be the only one on campus staying in for a girls/guys night on a Saturday night. It's easy to find a group of people that you'll fit in with and enjoy doing the same activities with.

Christina

IM sports are popular on campus, so that you can continue the sport you loved in high school. Carolina Fever is also really popular because you can have a better chance of getting basketball tickets, which is everyone's highest priority. Basketball is by far the most popular event on campus, but I really encourage any future students to experience all of the types of events that the campus has to offer. I met my closest friends through hanging out in the dorms and at parties. Most people party at least every Thursday and Saturday. If I am awake at 2am on a Tuesday, I am leaving He's Not ($2 Blue Cups) or Lucy's(1/2 Everything). Others party almost every night. Greek life is only 15{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} on campus, but if you live in Granville Towers(dorm), it is 85{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}. The last weekend I was at Chapel Hill, I went to almost every bar on Franklin St. between Thurs., Fri. and Sat. night. But, there is other stuff to do that does not involve drinking. You could go see a movie for free at the Union, go to see a movie on Franklin St. or at Southpoint (the mall), or go get ice cream or coffee. You could go see a show at Memorial Hall, or just hang out with friends at one of your places. Most people go off campus to go to Southpoint, the mall, which is about 20 minutes away from campus. You can also go to Carrboro to go to Weaver St. Market.

Alex

It is definately in a college town since there's not much else in Chapel hIll. But since it's close to other big cities like Raleigh /Greensboro you can usually find things to do (nightlife) in other nearby places, plus college parties are great. If your not the type to go out parting and drinking UNC also offers many things like bringing in great concerts, speakers, book writers, movie showings b4 they are released/or currently in theaters for free...so there is always something to do and going on. People are generally really nice so getting know the people in your dorm or classes is sometimes a good place to start and hangout and develop friendships. There are of course many organizations from greek life to dorm associations and cultural groups (hispanic, black, multicultural, indian, southeast asian, asian, etc..). Probably whatever your in to, they have an organizaiton for it and if they don't--you can eaisly start an organization as long as you have a few other people interested. Every year of course lately basketball season is a big deal, there's naked streakers that runs through the library during exams, HOmecoming, Black Frat/soritites have probaits and step shows. Frat/Sororoties are as important as you want them to be. I personally didn't get in one but my best friend along with many others Iknow did and we are still really close. It's just like another organization. But it's probably different depending on black/white frat/sorors becuase black greeks do not have housing like white ones. Also it is very hush-hush in black greek life if you want to be involved in it so don't blab that around when you 1st get to UNC. Some are harder to get into than others and of course listen around each one has it's own reputation, but you should make your decisions based on your research of the organizations and what they are really about.

Brian

There are thousands of clubs and organizations to join on campus in order to meet people. Not only that, but if there's a club that you want to be a part of that doesn't exist yet, it's really easy to get one formed. Our entire student body is very open and interactive. Dorm rooms are always open, people aren't afraid to walk up and start talking at events or at dinner, and everyone generally gets along. Athletic events are wildly popular on campus, especially basketball and football (with basketball being the hot ticket). Intramural sports are also very popular. The dating scene in Chapel Hill is very good. It's a college town full of college people, so everyone is just about the same age. Every bar or restaurant or place to hang out is full of people the same age looking for the same thing. Night life in Chapel Hill is very exciting because of the predominantly student population of the town. Franklin Street attracts most people on any given night, with plenty of places for underage and legal students alike. Partying basically encompasses the "weekends" (from thursday night to sunday morning), but it is not overly excessive. Our student body knows how to have a good time, without a doubt. Greek life is pretty big on campus, but not so big that you can't find something to do if you're not in a fraternity or sorority. There are frequent shows on campus or just off campus as well, and many venues that attract popular or new and upcoming bands to the area.

patrick

think of anything a college student could possibly want to do... there's already a club or organization doing it at UNC. i mean ANYTHING. i met my closest friends throughout freshman year - many of them branching from people i met at orientation. orientation is the best opportunity you have to make friends, because that's what everyone else is trying to do, too. you can party or study any night of the week. frat boys drink 7 nights a week, and then brag about it the next afternoon, and pre-med students study at least 5 nights a week.

Kathryn

There are so many clubs and activities for a student to get involved in and they cover a wide range of interests. Everyone could find a group to join and make a lot of friends through it. Sports are popular, particularly basketball but the other sports get a lot of attention too. In the dorms the study rooms often become a hang out area for other students on the floor to do their homework or just talk and take a break from studying. If you are trying to go out on a Tuesday, you definitely can but there will not be many people out to join you and your options are only really bars. People tend to take academics pretty seriously and around exam time or midterm time people stay in.

Mike

- Carolina Basketball - House parties every weekend (unless you're 21, then you're probably at the bars) - Tons of great bars on Franklin Street - Hundreds of student groups geared towards getting students involved with almost anything anyone could be interested in - Outstanding intramural program - Very good dramatic arts program - Free movies every weekend at the Student Union

Natasha

The beauty of the UNC campus is that no one (administration) cares what you do. For the most part, drinking laws are very loosely enforced and alcohol is pretty easily accessible. But that doesn't mean that all students drink. And it's not really a problem because no one drives. Frats are a pretty popular place to party if you're underaged (but girls, watch out if you go to a frat), as are friend's dorm rooms or places off-campus. Thursday is of course the big night of the week to party. There are sooo many clubs on campus, but the unifying factor is that most students are involved in service work of some kind. This can be Habitat, the food shelter, women's shelter, Ronald McDonald house, or so many other things. I though it was pretty hard to meet people on campus. Definitely get involved in some kind of club to meet people. Freshman mostly live on south campus, which almost has the amenities of a developing country, but it's a good way to meet other students your age, especially if you're an extrovert. Franklin St. is the place to be.

Gene

Always alot to do, you just have to be open to different things. If you look you will find it.

Ashley

night life is good.

Meredith

Awesome Awesome Awesome. And if you're bored, you can go to Raleigh. You don't have to drink to have fun, you don't have to party to have fun, (but don't let this dismay you, partying AND drinking are a lot of fun here too!)

Ellie

Basketball is humongously popular. Lots of parties. Weekends start on Thursdays. Tuesdays are big party nights too.

Erin

There are always thing going on either on campus or on Franklin St. Tuesday night is a big bar night, so a lot of people go out on Tuesdays. It's very easy to meet people at parties or through activities, although I personally have not made a lot of friends through my classes. My closest friends all lived on my hall my freshman year, and we're still good friends. There are plenty of things to do that don't involve drinking, including movies, 80's dance parties in your dorm room, etc. If you don't mind being around drinking but personally prefer not to drink, that's not a problem at all. I often go out with friends to parties or bars, and just dance and have a good time with friend, without drinking. If you really don't like to be around alcohol at all, there is substance-free housing, where you can meet people that share your beliefs. Halloween is a huge deal at UNC. Most people have their costumes planned months in advance. Everyone goes out on to Frankling St to find their friends and to check out everyone's costumes. Greek life is not necessarily important at UNC, but it's definitely visible. The frats party fairly often, and they also sponsor charity events on campus, so they're very visible. When I came to UNC, it was only 17{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} Greek (not really sure what the numbers are like now) but the Greek community is defintely a vocal minority.

Valerie

There are hundreds of clubs and activities, go the pit, get involved and emerge yourself into the glories of Carolina!

Kelly

I hang out with the Tar Heel Transfers. They're kind of clique-y. But they're cool, nonetheless. People at my dorm don't leave their dorms open. I don't know anyone on my floor, except I know that my roommates have friends across the hall. Dating is distracting. People are all too immersed in it; it causes more trouble than its worth. I love theatre. If I'm awake at 2am on a Tuesday, then I am trying to fall asleep. I don't like partying. It's hard to find friends who share the same ideas, though. Apparently, EVERYONE parties.

julia

IM sports are very popular and pretty cool, im not in to many clubs because thats not exactly my type of thin. in some dorms they do and in some they dont, it depends. Athletic events more popular than are guest speakers but both are popular. i met my closest friends through a sorority and i think i would have been really upset if i had not joined. awake on a tuesday your either studying or drunk. some people party all the time and some people dont, there are both. its very possible to keep a balance for the most part because there are lots of fun things. Sororities and Frats are veryyyyy popular. the dating scene is nottt great for girls- there are frat boys, athletes, smart people who dont party and few in between.

Whitney

"The only thing good about Duke University is that it is twenty minutes away from Chapel Hill. " -Duke graduate. My personal fav quote.

Emily

Most popular groups on campus are Campus Crusade, Intervarsity, Acapella groups such as the Clef Hangers and Loreleis, College Republicans and Young Democrats. Athletic events are very popular, mostly basketball and football. Regardless of the successfulness of a team, the UNC spirit is present at all athletic events. Carolina Fever is an organization that students sign up for and receive points for attending athletic events. Those with the most points get basketball tickets. It's a great way for students to support all athletic events rather than just one or two sports.

Meg

Greek life is very popular. A huge percentage of the student body is in Greek life. Intramural and club sports are also very popular. I'm in Chi Omega & on the UNC Ski & Snowboard team. They both have really fun, outgoing groups of people. I love them both. Athletic events are really popular b/c we love to cheer for our Tar Heels. And we dominate, so it's fun to cheer on winning teams. People don't really "date" here. They either hook up, or go to things together & end up being boyfriend/girlfriend. Not too much dating though. I met my closest friends through Chi Omega. If I am awake on a Tuesday at 2AM, I am either studying or partying. People party a lot here, but don't overdo it. Last weekend, I went to a farm party that Phi Delt, Beta, DKE, and Phi Gam hosted. On a Saturday, if you don't want to drink, you can go to a movie at the Varsity Theater, or go to a club & dance. Off campus, you can shop, hike, camp, go to professional sporting events, grocery shop, etc.

Social life here is great! I am on the field hockey team, but I am also in a sorority. I love being a part of these two organizations because I have met so many different people. When people ask how I balance the two, it is so easy to answer because I have the best of both worlds.

the social life here is the best of any campus i have ever visited. There is bowling, bars, socials, fund raising dances, lectures, forums, sing along karoke, sports teams for the competitive and non competitive. There is never a dull moment.

Sororities are fun and a great way to meet people. Be true to who you are and you will make the best friends in them.
