University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Top Questions

What is the stereotype of students at your school?

Mark

Though I'm not sure how many people at the school are actually members of fraternities and sororities, the majority of them dress as if they are. For male students, salmon colored shorts, button up shirts and designer polos, and croakies abound. For female students, lots of leggings as pants and cowboy boots (at least that's been the trend this year). The school has a reputation of being overwhelmingly liberal, but that's rather exaggerated -- I'd say the majority of students are moderates, it's just that the extremely liberal minority is very vocal (certainly moreso than the conservative minority).

They are stuck up, really smart, all the girls are gorgeous, the classes are hard, basketball is GREAT!

Alex

According to many out of state students, there's not a lot of diversity at UNC. Also, I think many people who pay attention to the Carolina-Duke rivalry think that Duke is the more intellectual school while UNC puts a big focus on sports, especially basketball. There are also several stereotypes about girls at UNC - that they are all (or trying to be) thin, beautiful Southern belles who are primarily interested in getting their MRS degree. One positive stereotype is that UNC students are in general very happy and have a fierce loyalty to their school that one would be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.

Jessica

One stereotype about UNC is that basketball is a way of life in Chapel Hill, and that the students are brilliant

UNC and its students could probably be stereotyped as rich and pretentious. It is also probably a thought that some people might have that even though the university is allegedly very diverse, it is not as diverse as it makes itself out to be.

Stereotypes about UNC are: - That it is a school full of "hippies". This stems from the fact that it is one of the more liberal campus' in North Carolina. - Everyone at UNC is very rich and snobby. - That there are much more "girls" at UNC than "guys". - That out of state students are shunned. - Living on south campus as a freshman is an awful experience.

UNC students are much more prestigious than other UNC system schools. In-state students don't have to work near as hard to get accepted than out-of-state students. Private schools often believe UNC students don't have to work as hard for good grades and UNC is much easier overall. There is a large greek system, where these girls and boys are the staple "southern gals and gents". UNC is very culturally diverse, and is known from the outside as being very liberal. There is also a very conservative feel around certain circles on campus.

Blake

Very liberal with a large gay & lesbian population. Wealthy white people. Mostly Female Extremely Intelligent Crazy about UNC Basketball ... many more...

Liz

Coming to UNC, I was aware of two very different stereotypes: that all the students were Greek, and that all the students were hippies.

Kayla

That all the tall people on campus are basketball players and that no athletes do real work. There is also a stereotype that, because the guy-girl ratio is in the guys' favor so immensely, girls try too hard and guys don't try at all.

Caroline

People that do not go to UNC tend to assume that Carolina is a sort of haven for North Carolina's hippies and homosexuals. At the same time, outsiders are aware of the unparalleled academic opportunities Carolina offers and the consistently stellar athletic programs, particularly basketball.

Megan

The Wine and Cheese Crowd at football/basketball games

Nico

A preppy population as well as a newly found liberal population who tries to have an open mind about all things. It seems like everyone is an overachiever and comes from a well-off family but they are trying to become worldly and think outside of the box.

Cary

The only stereotype I had heard about UNC and its students before I entered college was concerning their snobbery. Once you get to UNC, there's many more stereotypes about those in frats and sororities, people in Carrboro, etc.
