University of North Carolina at Greensboro Top Questions

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Ashley

I don't think any group outweighs another. We really are "doing something bigger altogether." A lot of our events consist of collaboration across organization around campus. I really don't think we have a "ranking" system or anything.

Markisha

The most popular sports and clubs on campus are Soccer, OLSL, and Greek. Soccer is played for our Homecoming, OLSL is a volunteer host for other organizations, and Greek are of course the Sororities and Fraternities. I am involved in OLSL and a Living Community called Make A Difference House. I am a big volunteer person so I stay involved with activities and events that are held on campus and other places. Speaking of events, they are big on our campus when we have big sport games going on or just random weekend fun events to try to get people to stay on campus and have fun instead of going home every weekend. Some examples are our talent shows, step shows, movies on the lawn, comedy shows, and much much more. UNCG is in Greensboro where lights shine bright on weekend nights where we have various amount of dance clubs, movie theaters, parks, and more. And its not just the weekend you can have fun. Target stays open past 10 for ONLY UNCG students every Wednesday and have like a big party playing loud music, giving out free stuff and give out coupons and you can do shopping! You may think its lame but tell that to the BUS LOADS of students that go and have some fun!

Dorms are usually safe, but theft does happen like at any other university. If you keep a good track of your stuff at all times, you'll be ok. Students don't usually leave their doors open unless they're near them, so it's not like an open house. Athletics are moderately popular, but since none of the clubs are powerhouses, we're rarely sold out. Usually, friends are made through the dorm or in your major. Most try and spend a couple of years on campus and then move off of it somewhere near by (RA's aren't usually regarded very well). Parties aren't a common thing on campus outside of the quad and if you're up at 2am, it's usually for a test. Greek orgs exist, but like the jocks, the university's mediocrity keeps them in a good check. Neither are overbearing and it's refreshing change from somewhere like UNC-Chapel Hill. I'm a poolhall junkie so the best places to go are Breakers on West Friendly, or Shooters on High Point Road. Jake's Billiards is close, but low-class in my opinion. Campus activities are usually good, the best being the theater productions they put on every semester. Speakers and academic debates are usually handled on a departmental basis.

This university offers so many activities, groups and organizations that I don't believe one is more popular than another. I've been involved with a few groups on campus; Girls Reaching Out (GRO), Invisible Children and I am also a member or Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Athletic events don't seem too popular, I never really hear many people talking about them. Although, I do believe we have a good soccer team and baseball team. When I first came to this school, I honestly thought the dating scene was dead. But to my surprise I was wrong, my boyfriend is actually a student here, so I guess it wasn't as bad as I thought. I actually meet my closet friends through my sorority. On this campus I believe that sororities and fraternities are very important. We have all eight of the NPHC fraternities and sororities, we also have sororities and fraternities that all under IFC, PHC, and the multicultural and business fraternities.

Probably one of the most popular activities is organized recreational sports through our Rec center at UNCG. We have flag football, soccer, volleyball, basketball..etc. These sports teams are open to any student who wants to play, and they are very well organized. I myself have played on a few flag football teams which also made me some of my best friends in college. The campus is centrally located in town so going off campus to eat out or going to a club is very popular on the weekends. Our school is about 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} women and 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} men, so the dating scene is pretty good on campus.

Mat

The most popular thing for me to do is go to the rec center. That is where I have meet some of my closest friends. I am not a member of one but you will see many students wearing Greek shirts and they seem to always have a tent set up somewhere. Athletics are not a huge deal here which surprises me because I love college sports. However there is always a large turnout for people wanting to do intramural sports. The dating scene is very good if you are a male. The campus has a majority of female students. Most are in either the nursing or education fields.

David

I didn't really know that there were any popular activities or groups for students. Everyone I know from school avoids those kinds of things.

David

This is the weakest part of UNCG. Students frequently leave the university to go home where their friends are most of the time. A large number of the universities students went to high school around the surrounding areas. The dating scene is bar oriented, but I moved to UNCG with my girlfriend so I don't take part in that. Athletic events are pretty much ignored because there isn't a football team.

Erin

The group I am involved with is volleyball and I absolutely love it. It is the one time when I think about nothing but the game and it relieves a lot of stress when I am dealing with exams and just school in general.

There are a million of activities to do on campus. Campus recreation is a huge. Intermural sports is huge. I have been playing since freshmen year and the same student play for four years and you build relationships and partnership with other student that last a long time. UNCG also has a reputation of have very pretty girls. So for the guys coming to campus single, you will have girls that will have something in common.

We have so many intramural sports teams from soccer and rugby to ultimate Frisbee. In fact we even have a quidditch team on campus. Our Campus activities board always makes sure that there is something exciting going on around campus. There are great plays and concerts as well. Last year I believe a fraternity was able to bring Corey Smith to play on campus, which was awesome! There are so many different clubs as well, a little something for everybody! The freshmen dorms tend to be the more inviting and social-able dorms. The dorms are constantly left open all the way down the halls. The clubs are just down the road in downtown Greensboro so there are also things to do off-campus at a reasonable price and distance.

I believe that the main group students want to join is Student Government Association (which I am a member of). Also greek life is huge on campus and sports.

We have very big intramural sports involvement. We also have a lot of clubs that have to do with academics. Some of the most pre levant groups here are performing arts groups. We have at least acapella groups, and they all do a wonderful job at including people, but also being amazing singers.

Jesse

There are lots of groups to get involved in, lots of fun to be had. . .

Cody

I imagine dating sucks for girls here. Great for guys though. I play on the rugby team. It's great. We actually won the D3 championships last year and have a pretty big following. Football sucks anyway. I met a lot of people just around. People are nice here. Frats? Meh. Lots of concerts and shows.

Brittany

I would say that the club sports are pretty popular. I played club soccer first semester and it was alot of fun. We traveled to Wilmington for a weekend and other places. It is definetly good to get involved. I met my closest friends at UNCG in my classes. Alot of them had the same major as me so we are always in the same classes. If I am awake at 2AM I am either in the computer lab on campus or a coffee shop that is still open. People do party but not obnoxiously and if so I have never heard of it. On a saturday night, you can go bowling, go to movies, watch a movie at someones apartment, there are alot of other alternatives.

Parker

I LOVE my social life at UNCG. My friends and I met through classes or at parties and we've all formed a very close bond. We have a bar that we frequent and we spend as much time as possible together. We go to parties about twice/three times a week and we always have a blast. When I loved in the dorms, my door was always opened to my friends. Everyone on our hall got close immediately.

Dylan

Nightlife is ok but not great. Many students clubs and on campus activities.

Hunter

The organization I was involved with was quite lame. The newspaper I work for is pretty cool--laid back and relaxed. UNCG is a suitcase school, meaning everyone leaves on the weekends, in which the campus is dead.Parties and clubs are big on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Tuesday nights are usually reserved for bars. Fraternities-sororities are huge at UNCG(at least 50 million). Dancing at a downtown club is the only thing you can do on a Saturday night in Greensboro, considering most of the population of the city consist of retired baby-boomers.

Heather

BIG partiers. it's weird, people tend to party more around exam time, when they should be studying...

Shannon

In the freshmen dorms people are friendly, especially Weil-Winfield (which is also the nicest with the hottest sports guys too!). In the rest of the dorms (upperclass) no one really talks to each other at all. I never even met most of my hallmates last year, its kinda lame. The dating scene is lame any time after freshman year. I met my closest friends freshman year or in my major classes. Wed. night is Inferno night- lots of gay guys/ frat guys. Thursday is Greene St. which is basically where the "popular" kids go, its somewhat selective. Some ppl go to Arizona Pete's which is more fun, less stuck up also. A lot of people have small gatherings, you have to know people though.

Andrew

Social life is pretty dull. everyone has their on group uncg does offer a wide variety of speakers and such

Amber

There are all kinds of ways to be involved at UNCG. I'm not in any extracurricular activities due to work, but those who are seem really happy and open to people. I wish I could be more involved, b/c thoe people always look as though they're having a great time. There are always things to go to, such as speakers(who actually are interesting!), athletic events, theatre performances, and many others. Of course there are parties on campus, but that doesn't get in the way of academics either. You can easily do well in school with an active social life.

Caitlin

If you're looking for a Greek school, this probably isn't the one for you. We do have a Greek organization, but it's MUCH smaller than most. The sororities do not have individual off campus housing, only the fraternities. They don't really do very much for students who aren't Greek (ie: open parties). House parties are more of a popular thing here whether it be by a random student or a few members of a athletic team. In the fall, the soccer games are usually attended by most with parties following afterwards, same for the basketball and wrestling team. Spring usually calms down because you'll find the Spring semester always seems to go by faster.

Ryan

Tha social life here is great. Campus Activites and other departments make the campus welcoming by putting on NUMEROUS of free show and activities that are offered by the campus.

Hillary

There are always parties going on somewhere close, but if you don't want to do that there are plenty of other fun things to do. Tate Street is about a 2 minute walk from campus. It has lots of food:mexican, japanese, subs, pizza, coffee. There is also a bookstore, clothing store, etc. I met lots of cool people when I came here. I have actually met a few people that went to our high school rival, which was pretty cool. Athletic events are pretty popular, especially basketball, and it's really fun to go watch the games. My dorm is awesome. Sometimes people just leave their doors open and talk to you as you walk by. And sometimes when we don't have a lot of homework we'll stay up having late night conversations giggling until who knows when.

Bruce

Greek letter organizations. Im involved in Phi Beta Sigma and we throw the biggest and best programs every year. Basketball is the most popular sporting event next to soccer. Every yer we have fall fest, winter fest, spring fling, welcome week.

emily

some students leave their doors open, about 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}. some athletic events are popular (mens basketball and soccer- more people need to come to volleyball!). personally, i don't see very many potential dates on this campus... i met my closest friends through sports and one of my classes. i think frats and sororities are kind of lame, especially here. last weekend i was on spring break in colorado. on sat night besides drinking, do homework and catch up on sleep.

Josh

Sporting events are usually the most common things to go to on campus especially mens soccer and basketball games. here you can meet alot of people and just get out to support the school.

Court

most popular groups are sorority and soccer. i am in the tennis group/ has been greek. i have never lived in the dorms, athletic teams like basketball, baseball and soccer are big (the mens), people dont really attend girls athletic games. i have had a lot of different close friends here, but my circle of friends used to be my tennis team but they because too stuck up so now i hang out with my good friends, friends and i met them through chi omega. if i am awake on tuesday i would be at corner bar, homecoming happens every year and is a good tradition, people party all the time, frats and sororities are very important for the peopl who are not on athletic teams because i think it keeps you focus on your goals easier because you have a "family" last week i traveled for tennis to charleston, i go to dinner and a movie, or watch a movie at home, or go to a party/bar and not drink. i do anything and everything off campus.

Billi

Greek organizations I would say are the most popular. Students in high school already have a mindset on which fraternity/sorority they will join. They are not important but have a big name on campus. Next would come the athletes because THEY are the face of UNCG. The group of people I am involved with originated from the summer school scene. When school started, they made other relationship which made the group bigger and it is still getting bigger. Students in the dorms usually dont keep their dorms open. Personally, I like to keep it open to let people feel welcome to stop by and say hey. This is another way to meet new people. Maybe I'll play music and they will jus come in and start dancing! Some athletic events are more popular than others. You will find the basketball games packed, but you will see plenty of seats open in a volleyball match. If I am awake at 2 am, most likely I will be studying or watching TV trying to go to sleep. College nights are Wednesday and Thursday, so you will see people getting ready at 9 showering and picking out clothes to wear. Students party 2-3 times a week. Last weekend was spring break so I went out to the club on a saturday night. THere is plenty to do on a saturday night. I, myslef, am not a drinker and i=I have just as much fun dancing in the club with my friends. When I am off campus, which is rare, I'll be eating with friends, shopping, going to the movies, grocery shoppping, or going out to the club.

Terry

Social life is awesome. There is always something to do since the college is near downtown. Parties are everywhere and clubs are open alot. Its a good place to attend.

I had a really hard time finding my niche when I first came to UNCG. Had I not gone through sorority recruitment I would not have stayed the entire first semester at UNCG. I did not live in a freshman dorm, so I am not sure how the social scene is there. I would venture to say that the Greek organizations are the most involved in all aspects of campus life including attending sporting events, speakers, and philanthropic events. Most other crowds stick to their own, such as the athletes attend sporting events, but not speakers.
