The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) is a public university located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It is the first state-supported residential arts school in the United States. UNCSA offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the arts, including dance, design and production, drama, film, music, visual arts, and writing. It is rigorous. It is outstanding. It will make you great but you must be dedicated to your studies. It is a conservatory in every since of the word.

Nichole - 06/15/2023

The Film school needs more relevant faculty who are in the current industry, instead of the current faculty who teach from a dated and jaded perspective. Also, the idea that people can pay full tuition, just to not get into their major of choice is absurd. There are a lot of cultural shifts that needs to take place within the film school to offer students the curriculum they paid for and deserve.

You will adore this place if you love your art. Speaking from the perspective of a film student (because we also have, design and production, dance, drama, and music), this is THE best place to gain experience before venturing out and starting your career. The school of filmmaking is basically its own production company and in your first weeks at school you start making films around campus and on sound stages. You also interview with upperclassmen to get jobs on the third and fourth year thesis films. Only one month into school I was already getting on set experience. Expect to get jobs as a PA, crafty, location scout, grip, or electric. The more rare jobs to get as a first year are 2nd-2nd AD, camera PA and production coordinator. At other schools, students wouldn't even get to think about getting on set or making collaborative films until their second or third year meanwhile at UNCSA your name will be in the credits and your shorts will be screened in our theaters. The community here is positively uplifting and I can't image going anywhere else and getting the experience and education I am getting.

Gage

If you are in love with the arts this is by far one of the best schools you can attend. Everyone around you is just as dedicated to their arts as you are. It's a friendly campus with great professors. There are so many tools to really get in depth with your arts and learn absolutely everything there is about the art style you love and enjoy. The school might not be the regular college experience, and the campus is small, BUT you will be so busy doing what you love that it won't make any difference. Also, it's not like there isn't regular college experiences. There are still plenty of parties, and college activities. If you love the the arts, this IS the school for you.

University of North Carolina School of the Arts FAQS

  1. What is the Acceptance Rate at University of North Carolina School of the Arts?

The fall 2020 acceptance rate for University of North Carolina School of the Arts is 54%. That means, out of _____ applications received in 2020 , _____ students were offered admission. The number of males who applied was _____ vs the number of females which was _____.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

First and foremost, I would tell myself to get onto a normal sleep-cycle so that once I got to college I wouldn't have the sleep and health issues I started out with. I would also tell myself to get everything done as soon as possible after it's assigned, instead of procrastinating and waiting until the last minute. The final thing I would tell myself would be to practice more every day. The voice is a very fragile muscle and not using it causes it to weaken and become inconsistant. I have so much more potential than I allowed myself to achieve in high school, and I wish I hadn't inhibited myself by putting roadblocks in my own way.

  5. What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The most frustrating thing about my school is the lack of time you have for anything else but your shows. Going from back to back shows all the time does not allow you to get your life together. Struggling with depression almost feels like even more of a hardship here because it is so difficult to concentrate on getting mentally well when you have not been able to sleep, eat, or take care of yourself properly because you sacrifice so much for the program.

Other school have artist mixed with doctors and lawyers, in UNCSA we are all artist and we all work together. Is more like a conservatory than a University really.

  8. What's unique about your campus?

UNCSA is a great school. The professors and instructors care about their students and start immediately preparing you in your field of study unlike some colleges who wait until junior and senior year. I feel that one of the million things that is best about UNCSA is that it is one of the top colleges in the nation for the arts and all areas of the arts. The staff and faculty work hard to assure that you are learning the skills needed to be a top choice to employers when education is complete as well as providing top qualtiy education.

  9. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The worst thing about my school is the fatc that it is a conservatory. Although it puts an emphasis on learning your art fully, the intensity of the programs can be wearing. Not everyone is ready for the amount of commitment necessary at my school. However, for those who can survive, the school holds many opportunities to grow and realize your complete abilities.

  10. What kind of person should not attend this school?

NCSA is not the school that a strong conservative Christian person should attend. While it is an excellent school for everything they have there, it is an EXTREMELY liberal school. An extremely conservative person would feel very uncomfortable here.

  13. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish had a better understanding of the idea of growing as an artist and as a person can be (and often is) separate from the pressures of a potential career. You can seek and find both here, but you should not let one get in the way of the other. If you are coming to this school to do what you love, always be sure that this institution is nurturing that love and not hindering it, because it can do both. Otherwise, always keep an open mind and a positive outlook.
