What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

What I would tell parents and students abouting finding the right college is to research and visit! Look at the school's websites and look at them in depth. One thing that I did was I wrote down everything I was looking for in a school. Such as facilities, on-campus employment, housing, dining and most importantly the programs they offered. After I had those determined I then went to visit the campuses that I thought were the best for what I was looking for. Once on campus, make sure you take the tour and ask a lot of questions, don't hold back anything. Also once the tour is done, go explore the campus yourself. I know when I was looking at UND, thats what I did and with just walking around campus I couldn't believe how friendly everyone was to me. This was something that helped me seal the deal. So my advice is to do your homework and make sure you go and visit.

There is a "right" college or university for everyone! Just because you don't get into your "first" choice, don't dispare! Be open for new learning experiences and the best time of your life. Oh, be nice to that rich uncle, too! He just may come in handy.

Finding the right college is like finding any other major purchase in a person's life, it almost feels as if it finds you. College, like a house, or a car, is a major investment that affects everyday life for many years, and it is a good ideas to shop around till you see something you cannot live without. Almost every campus I applied to had tours available, many brochures promoting activities, and persons already involved on campus to receive information from. If you know what is personally important to find and make sure is available to you while you are at college, its easy to ask the right questions in the searching process. Also, a good idea is to go to campuses with an open mind, because you may accidentally let a great opportunity pass you by. I wanted to go to a college in the cities, but then i walked onto the school I go to now in a town hardly even considered a suburb and have never regretted my decision to move. I save tons of money and have the best friends I could possibly ask for. Like I said, it found me.

Go visit the area, know what you are getting into.

Chase your dreams. Don't be closed minded, look at the whole picture, and try to enjoy this part of your life, you only live it once. However, at the same time, don't forget that you need to take your studies very seriously.

Start with working as hard as you can in high school, that's what will open doors for you to select the best Undergraduate school and receive the best scholarships. As I look back I sorely regret not working just a little harder, as there was a $10,000 scholarship from my school that I could have earned if I had only worked just a little harder in High school. Once the hard work is complete, look for a good well-rounded college, because the reality is, you probably won't be sure what you'd like to do until you get to college. Look for general qualities such as good places to study, quality instructors, a good range of library hours, easy access to a coffee shop, and high quality on-campus housing (which you should definitely live in, at least the first year, on-campus GPAs are generally higher, and you meet a lot of great people.) Finally, don't fret about your choice, just move forward and put your best into doing well and doing what you enjoy, that is what will lead you to the happiest out come, including college and major.

Make sure to visit the college and ask current students what they think about the program your kid is going into. Get some real feedback from students, not tour guides or college posters. Don't go by what the website says, go actually look at the different areas and see how they perform in your own mind.

Get good at math. It is very hard here
