What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Erin

If I were to go back in time and give myself advice about how to adapt to college life the most valuable information I would pass on would have to do with interacting with people. I would advise myself to work to improve my people skills in order to better interact with classmates. I would advise myself to live with as few other students as possible, so that I would have an easier time adjusting to my "home" environment. I would also try to explain to myself that I should be confident in myself even if I am unsure of the situation. I realize that I am an educationally driven student, but that I do not interact as well as I should with others. This was the most difficult part of adjusting to college life for me, as I was already used to the work load. I would advise myself to be as open as possible and to interact whenever I am given the chance.

Jennifer

I would make much more of an effort in my science courses, they do matter.

Brittany

College is expensive and there are opportunities available to help students fund those expenses. I feel that finding financial aid for school was something I did not concentrate on; I simply assumed my parents would help me through. Even though I did receive some scholarships and my parents helped me with books and miscellaneous expenses, I wish I had spent more time or had someone advice me on where to find funding for school. I also feel that I would advise myself to get involved in the community in the area I was studying. I wanted to become a physician and spent over 200 hours volunteering in various medical centers only to decide halfway through college I did not want to become a doctor. I switched my major to physical therapy because I had spent time at a rehabilitation facility and absolutely loved the profession. Becoming involved early on will help solidify the choice a student makes as to whether the degree is an appropriate one or, like me, will allow time to change your mind. It was, without a doubt, the best thing I could have done and completely changed my future.

In high school, if one does not "fit in", they are made fun of and excluded from several "in-crowds". High school is all about the social life and the clicks, and while there are still clicks in college, mainly by fraternities and sororities, you don't feel judged if you are different from others. The advice I would give to myself, is to keep exploring the eclectic interests I had. To not feel pressured by others to fit a certain look or mold to please others. There are going to be judgemental people everywhere you go. However, in college, instead of looking at you like something is wrong with you, most people are more interested in learning from you. They are more curious about learning cultural differences, tastes, opinions and why you have them. From a wide range of hippies, jocks, intellectuals, and musicians, there is so much to learn and absorb from other people. College life encourages being liberal and open to people who look and live differently from you. In conclusion, keep being the person you are growing to become without fear of others rejecting you in any way.

Since beginning college, I have learned who I am. By learning from so many different professors and studying numerous subjects, my beliefs underwent a reformation. I have discovered what I stand for and the reasons for which I choose to stand for or against certain ideas and topics of controversy. College has given me the opportunity to learn about different fields of studies in relation to possible career futures, leading me to making my decisions regarding my future career and life path. My college experience has built my determination and passion to reach the professional goals in law. Through my college experience, I have discovered my identity. My passions and desires have become clear to me and I am very grateful for that. College has created a confidence in my future that I did not have before attending such a school. I would strongly recommend attending college to anyone that finds their self lost and unaware of which life path they should take. College has aided in shaping me into the person I am. I know that I will be able to look back on my college experience as the stepping stone that led to my successful future.

Michaela

College has opened my eyes to the real world. Financial problems as well as educational learning, has molded me into a more mature person. UNF has taught me that the world isn't as small as one may think and that no matter how much you think you may know, there's always new information out there for you to find.

In High School college was always an iffy topic. I was never sure if that was the route I wanted to take, but eventually I did, and I am glad too. I had no idea how beneficial college was until I actually enrolled in it. My experience allowed me to realize that college cannot hurt you just help you, well it can hurt your wallet, but that is beside the point. I am majoring in Culinary Arts and Nutrition at Hawaii Community College, and I just love this school. Here they believe in hands on training, and hands on is exactly what we receive. I originally thought that I would be in a class all day reading and studying books, and listening to lectures, but not here. Here at Hawai'i Community College the instructors try hard to apply 50 percent of instructional time, and 50 percent of hand's on training, and it is that very fact the makes college beneficial for a lot of us, because we are receiving a great education, and gaining real world experience that would better prepare us for our future careers and goals. That is why I value College.

Justin

My college experience means everything to me. Before I started college I was very antisocial and I hated the world. While at college I learned to love my fellowmen and to enjoy interaction with others of all backgrounds. The students that attend here are of the highest caliber. This campus provides so many resources to help every student that attends here. The staff and faculty are exceedingly personal and do all they can to help each student. The education I have received has been superb. The classes were very personal and the instruction was terrific. I learned many things not just for my educational future, but for my whole life. Knowledge really is power and I have gained more than just knowledge during my time at Brigham Young University. I have gained a whole new perspective on the world. I have gained much wisdom and a mind that is open to new ideas. I have come to appreciate people of all races and cultures for the many valuable things that they offer. I feel comfortable and safe here not just physically, but also intellectually and emotionally. I would not trade my time and experiences here for anything in the world.

Kristin

By attending college i have learned and experienced things that will forever effect my life. By moving out on my own and attending school you truely learn responsibility and discipline. Living at home you are told what to do and how to live without really making decsions on your own. By moving out and going to school because you want to fulfil your own asperations brings you that much closer to becoming the person you were meant to be. You grow in so many ways, and in just four years the experience of college will make you into an adult that can successfully take on the real world. There will always be distractions, college helps you learn to make the right decisions and stay on the track.

Stephanie

What I have gotten out of my college experience is the incredible oppurtunity to see that I need growth, and the oppurtunity to achieve that growth on my campus. They don't bottle feed you on campus and clearly when you go from high school to college you "know" it will be different but you can't expect what you have never before experienced. The college experience has been so important for me because I'm treated like an adult and get to experience that independence and responsibility. At the same time it's been an incredibly humbling experience because low and behold...I didn't know everything! When for so long (and as I assume most young adults believe) I thought I knew it all. I now get to see how naive I am, and the unexplored frontier that lies before me that beckons me forward. Now that I see that I don't know everything I am not discouraged by my novice status but rather excited that I have so much out there to grasp.

Meagan

To be honest, I really don't feel like I have gotten a whole lot out of my college experience. I sometimes feel as though I'm there only to receive the piece of paper at the end, which will open up more job opportunities for me. I know I'm learning some, but I just feel like some things are pointless and a waste of my time. However, we do have to do observation hours and pre-internships, which are teaching me a lot. It really helps to be submerged into your field of study, in order to see what really goes on and what it's really like. Overall, I just think that college could be minimized to what we really need to know, instead of pointless classes that help colleges make money. But in the classes that are important to me, I do learn a lot and enjoy learning.

Hannah

I goofed off in high school and wasn't accepted into any colleges except community college and at first I thought it was a bad thing until I realized I had found the place that was going to make me into an adult. I work harder than I ever have, I am an EMT and I will remember all those teachers that pushed me and never let me get away with not getting my work done. I have learned more about the world I am living in and how I make a difference in these last 2 years than I have my entire life and I owe it all to the fact that I am still in school and doing my best to create a future for myself.

I know how much my education is worth and I know I am lucky to attend a university as many people in this country do not get the opportunity to finish high school. I have put myself through college and it has been a long road. I have learned many things along the way. The most useful lesson has been on money and how to handle it when you have none. Through college, I have been very creative with food, things to do with my free time, and how to live under such an insane budget. Most of all, I have had a lot of fun. I have been places I never would have gone if I hadn’t gone to college. I went with my university to Guatemala in March, I went to Washington D.C. last year and toured the White House and Pentagon and I have made some great connections that will help me when I graduate. My parents have been hit with the economic troubles and are unable to help me with college. I know that it hurts them more than me that they cannot help. Thank you so much for your consideration.

Alex

The most important thing I feel I have gotten out of my college experience are the connections I have made to my professors and the people who were around me. Because of my college experience I have people I know and can rely on professionally. College is where education becomes a voluntary choice about the path you take for your life and career. Your degree path will lead you to be surrounded by professors and other students who have chosen career choices similar to yours. These are the people you are going to be with spending days, weeks, and months, preparing and studying. When you are done with college, these people will be your collegues or your close friends whom you share professional interests. These connections are absolutely invaluable for your future., whether you are exploring job opportunities, making professional intruductions, or working together in order to solve problems or learn from each other. Online college classes and non-traditional education may give you the knowledge that you need to complete your degree or find a job. They wont, however, provide these connections or the environment for collaboration and learning that a college campus and a classroom will provide.

Leadership, presentation, scholarship, philanthropy; all of these things I've learned while attending the University of North Florida. By becoming actively engaged in my campus community through serving on Greek Council, working for the Campus Activities Board and being the president of the Public Relations Student Society of America's UNF chapter I have been able to fine tune my leadership skills, expand my network of colleagues and friends as well as learn what it takes to engage students at a non traditional commuter school. All of these things I couldn't have learned in the confines of a classroom or from the pages of a textbook. It is only through the numerous opportunities that UNF offers through its over 150 campus clubs and activities that I've grown as a person and become a polished and professional young woman.

Megan

I personally have recieved a lot of helpful concepts in college. College has matured me and made myself a respectable woman. College has given me my new way of living, growing into an adult, and taking full responsibilities. I value this. Without what i have learned in College thus far I do not think I would be able to mature into a ideal adult that College has turned me into.

Kaitlyn

I have been at the University of North Florida for just a semester as a freshman and greatly enjoy it. I have learned that time management and hard work is very important in keeping my academics in order and being able to have time to relax. I also have learned that there is great diversity in race and beliefs on the campus and in the world which I greatly enjoy and am interested in learning more about. I think it is valuable to attend since it has high standards to be accepted and that only a certain number of students are accepted each year. I feel that I am a student who is genuinely cared about in my academic and personal life. It is my second home and I am proud to be an Osprey.

Christopher

My college experience has shaped my entire life in a way that I never imagined. It has been a journey and something that I can look back on with fondness, realizing that these were the years that really changed the direction of my life. At the University I was able to realize my potential and with the help of some of the best mentors/professors in the field I was also able to figure out who I am and what I really want to do. The University has been invaluable in that regard and given the chance to go to a different University, I would choose this University again with reservations.

Amanda

As a future educator, my college has provided my with many different field experiences where I am able to witness both example teachers and non-example teachers in their work environment. My college has provided me with the greatest experiences both in the college classroom and in the classroom with local teaching professionals and with students. I have been able to participate and facilitate many behavioral analysis studies, reading case studies, and other student-life impacting tasks. College has not only given me the opportunity to conduct these studies, but the knowledge and experience on how to conduct them properly. I value all the knowledge and experiences I have gained in my college experience and feel readily prepared to use them in my own classroom.

I have come out of my shell, and have learned I have to study. I have learned what my study habits need to become, and how to approach things from a different perspective. I am a more mature adult now than I was last fallterm. I have a broader outlook on life now and am not so close-minded.

Exposure. I believe my exposure to diversity has been the greatest aspect of my college experience. Anyone can learn facts or increase their knowledge base, but experiences are the real teachers in life. I was raised in a very conservative home and was very sheltered most of my life. I was very opinionated, but those opinions had no empirical basis and simply reflected the environment in which I was raised. College was an eye-opening experience because it challenged my belief structure. I was exposed to different view points, life styles, political opinions and religions...and I LOVED it!!! I learned that diversity is what makes humanity. People are, and should be, different. And they should be accepted for those differences without judgement or moral labeling. During my college years, I stuck firm to some beliefs and completely changed others. What is important is that now, my opionions and my viewpoints are my own, based on experience. Additionally, I learned to recognize my own personal bias, and try not to let it get in the way of appreciating people and viewpoints that are different from myself.

I need this scholarship due to the fact that I currently work for a non profit organization that can no longer afford to pay for my school, and neither can I. I will graduate this December with my Diesel certificate with a 4.0. I will graduate next semester with an associates in applies science next semester, if I can come up with the money. After which I plan to pursue my Bachelors in Industrial Technology at Texas A&M. In choosing to grant me this scholarship you will help me continue to pursue my education so that I may develop into a well educated mechanic and continue to build drill rigs for Living Water International, which drills water wells in foreign countries and teaches people about God. Our site is www.water.cc thank you and may God bless you

Samantha

I have learned that with great drive comes success. I am very determined to make something of myself and apply what this university is teaching me to help others. The knowledge that I have obtained from this university thus far is vast. I have learned things from the unique structures of the heart, to the person that I want to become one day. Knowledge is my key to success, my ticket to becoming a Labor & Deliver Nurse one day. I am gaining knowledge at this school, which is something that can never be taken away. It is far more valuable than any pair of shoes, dress, or car I will ever buy. I am very thankful for the opportunity that I have been given to attend college. The University of North Florida is giving me the knowledge to be able change lives forever. Knowledge is power. Knowledge is everything.

College is not only to get an education and become what you want but to learn how to live on your own and live on a budget. College life is also to have a social life and interact with different people. In college you can find friends, best friends or even your future spouce. I have enjoyed my college experience and I have learned how to live. These are the things I have gotten out of my college experience.

Hannah

College is so different from high school; you have so much more freedom. I have come to know, that your teachers still care about you, even though it shouldn't matter to them whether you come to class or not. Going to college has been valuable to me, because it has taught me that I have so many different possibilities. I didn't know that I had so many opportunities as to what I could become. Before I had ever stepped foot on campus I was so afraid that I wasn't going to fit in, and that no one would except me. I now know that there will always be someone around that you at least have one thing in common. I have already learned many things from my experience of college; I can't wait for the years ahead!

laila

I have gotten nothing but good from my college experience so far. I love the experience of walking outside and breathing in fresh air, and being greeted by a bunch of friendly smiles around campus. I love the freedom that I get living on campus; granted it is a bit harder without mom and dad to budget for me, but it is a great opportunity to take care of ourselves and start our lifes as adults. It is a valuable experience because it broadens my mind and increases my skills with people, technology and new knowledge given to me by my professors. I truly love my school and it is a great fit to my personality, I can feel the changes already from merely a month of living here! The best part of it all is the education I am receiving which will further my steps into life and help me get a job that I will love; because it will be more than a job,it will be a careeer!

This college experience led me on the path of my own self-discovery and growth as a person. This journey has led me to meet some amazing professors and students from diverse backgrounds and ethnicites which taught me a lot. It's been in these key years of my life where I discovered who I really am and what I truely belive in. The classes I've taken, particularly philosophy and language, have helped change the way I think about people and the world in general. I have a whole new perception on life and I want to use what I've learned to change the world. I now realize how much influence my generation and I have on society and I am going to do great things with my education. This whole experience has been invaluable to the planning of my future and my goals.

I attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where I majored in English and minored in business. As I approached my senior year, I was able to land a full-time job as a writer/journalist at a small company. Out of money and energy to finish my degree, I entered my professional job with enough knowledge to help expand this business into a bigger and better venture. Every class I took, from historical geography to business law plays a part in my ability to run the company. Now, I'd like to offer my children to do something I was unable to complete because of financial reasons. I want them to graduate college. I'm so focussed on this goal that I'm applying for this scholarship for my son who enters 6th grade this year. Please consider my application on behalf of Lucas Zelnio, my aspiring doctor, who will put the money to very good use. Awarding a scholarship to a middle school student will do nothing but solidify his hopes and dreams to excel in school and to complete his college degree.

Robin

My college experience has been ongoing and an awesome one. I hope that I never want to stop learning. I believe that originally when I received my Associate in Nursing and worked for 10 years that laid a good foundation. Then I went back to pursue my Bachelors degree, and focused more on the research aspect. Nursing is mainly based on evidence based research now, so I learned how to put my knowledge to good use in providing care for my patients. As time has progressed, I would now like to obtain my Masters in Nursing then a Post Masters certificate in Nurse Practitioner of Clinical Nurse Specialist to focus more on a specialty in Nursing. I have two teenage children who watch me continue on in school, and I believe it is leaving an impression on them to continue learning. I believe there may be a time when we are all in college together.

Aaron

I have learned that college can be a complete waste of time if you are not studying what you want. If you are only going to school for money and not for your interests, then what was the point of higher education? And while there are people who are willing to help you, you have to first be willing to help yourself. You can only go as far as you want in life if you are willing to take yourself there.

Nerissa

When I entered college, I was still in my high school element. I didn’t use my time wisely, didn’t study as much, and didn’t care as much. During my freshmen year, I took a course to help me manage my time and money. I learned how to set up a studying process to help me pass my exams. I have made many friends and gained an interest in pledging to a sorority within the next two years. I plan to transfer from community college to a university after I obtain my Associates Degree in Nursing. I have learned how to communicate well in any environment, for any audience. College gives you more freedom than high school. But with more freedom, comes greater responsibilities. It has been valuable to attend because college is a whole new dimension to prepare ourselves for the life ahead of us. We are flourishing as students in several aspects. College shapes us into who we are today, to have a strong foundation and to be well-rounded. In most fields, a college degree is needed to pursue a career. A higher education molds us into today’s successors, innovators, and creative minds.

Johanna

At 25 I look back at my college years as the best years of my life. Why? One word describes it all- FUN. Imagine being out in the world, on your own, for the first time ever. Imagine living with strangers who become life-long friends. Imagine learning as much as you can from the time you spend in the classroom, then applying that knowledge to the problems you face in life. Imagine waking up in the morning not knowing where you are, but knowing who you are, and where you're going. College isn't about cramming for exams, it's about finding yourself. College isn't about boring lectures, its about discovering your niche. College is networking and mind-expanding and every day feels like anything is possible. I may not remember everything I learned in the classroom at my college, and I may cringe at the amount of money I owe in student loans, but I'd do it all over again... in a second. Why? Because it was the best damn time of my life.

Alyssa

I have made new friends. I have learned to value my education and work hard to be successful.

Carliemar

I have learned through college the importance of life management. In order to succeed you have to understand your priorities. Before college I didn’t really understand where I should place my focus. Through my failures I have learned where to put my time and energy. The second most important thing I have learned is the value of good communication skills. I think that sometimes what separates one job candidate from another is how well they communicate and relate to the people around them. College taught me how to communicate and get along with others. Before school I thought that it was all about getting a degree but if you get that degree and haven’t learned anything from college outside of academics you won’t get very far.

heather

Throughout my college experiences, I have realized the importance of always growing and improving in many areas of my life. With college I have had the opportunity to learn about different cultures such as sign language and the deaf community, different religions, arts, and literature through my humanities class and the history of our country through my history classes. And, I would love to continue my journey of learning, further develop my skills and grow as a person. College has been extremely valuable in my life because it has taught me the importance of preparing well regardless of the assignment. An added beneft of preparing well is an elevated level of confidence.

Being a student at the University of North Florida was a good experience. I met great people that ended up in life long relationships. However, when it boils down to academic experience, I would rate it a 7/10. I would have recieved much mroe knowlegdge at a more larger college such as University of Florida.

Michael

I have recieved friends, knowledge, and skills from my college experience. It has been valuable to attend because it has helped me focus my life and get my priorities straight. It is bringing me closer and closer to the career i am pursuing.

Abigail

So far, I have only just been enrolled in the summer program at UNF, but i have visited many times on numerous other occasions, including musical performances, recitals, shows, orientation, and many wonderful others. On multiple tours of the school, I have discovered the importance of attendance, because if one attends college regularly and obtains his or her degree, they are much more likely to obtain a job and be able to support themselves and just consider themselves successful. I have not yet experienced, but can only imagine the sense of satisfaction after completing four years, or more, of learning how to succeed in the feild that I wish to pursue. My goal in life, as of right now, is to finish college with honors, only because i know that getting a degree is nearly the only way now, in our recession, to stand a chance at following a steady career, which is possibly the most important thing to accomplish in life, because without financial support and a purpose, no one can survie. As of right now, I se my attendance at college as the most important thing.

As a freshman just entering into my college career I am really looking forward to moving into my future. I think that college will offer me more freedom and independence. The school I have chosen is very welcoming and the atmosphere is very relaxed. Although the academic program will be challenging I feel that my high school years have prepared and that I will be very succesful!

Sara

The College experience for my freshman year has been a truly a growing experience as I mature into a young women. College has impacted my life so much becase it has molded me into a more well organized, respected ,responsible, harder working woman and I tell you I love every bit of College. College has really brought out a side of me that I never knew existed. Working hard as ever earning A's and B's on my semester grades and having the Honor to be recognized to serve on the Dean's List, College has really proven that I can do the impossible, you just have to work hard for what you want, it just doesn't come to you. The fact that College gives you so much freedom and responsibilites I feel that the responsibilities I have to deal with help me in a way of becoming a more diligent and trustworthy person because when people see you doing good they will notice and say, "Oh we should have her on our commitee because she is a very well disguished and very organized young women". That is why College is extremly valuable to me.

Melyssa

Through my college experience I have been able to learn independence. Through this independence I've learned that I'm going to make mistakes, and sometimes I'm going to hate myself, or my life but at the end of the day I will know that I've gained experiences and learned. I've learned what I do and do not want in my future. Therefore, in my college experience I now know that there is no such thing as regret because everything you do helps prepare you for your next step in life. No extra class, or knowledge is wasted, and nothing is a waste of time. I've learned there is always time to achieve what you want in life, all you have to do is work hard and keep moving forward because the second you give up is the second you give away your independence, your strength, your you.

Amanda

From my college experience, I've learned not to sweat the small stuff, and it's all small stuff. I've learned that not everything is the end of the world as I know it. What happens in my life happends for a reason. Worrying doesn't get me anywhere. I should always take advantage of every opportunity in life that I am given, and I need to give a hundred percent in everything I do. I am the only one who is responsible. I've learned that education is really the core of everything. With the recession we are in, there are a lot of people going back to school to futher their education so they can find a better job. My goal is to finish school and get the most out of my education experience so when I graduate, I have all the skills I need to get the job I want. I am blessed with the opportunitiy to go to school and not everyone gets that opportunity. I've learned to be thankful for everything, and to not take anything for granted.

Kristi

It was a great experience that I would do all over again.

Jamie

I started my college career at a community college near home. Since I've been a young girl, it has been my dream to move to Chicago and study architecture. Three years after high school, and one associates degree later, I'm ready to make my dream a reality. Community college after high school was not my first choice, but looking back now, I'm glad I chose that route. Starting at a community college helped to make the transition between high school and college easier for me; I believe it will also help make the move from home to Chicago easier as well. My choice has been valuable to me because while I was home I was able to research and visit different universities that could potentially be my next school. The advisors at the community college were able to contact the universities and help me set up a schedule with credits that would transfer once I got my degree. Now, having my degree, I feel as though I am more employable to companies of my career choice as either an intern or new employee. The best part, I received three years of education on community college tuition rates!

Molly

I have gained so much out of my first year in college. I have learned that I can make it on my own with minimal support from my parents. For someone who has grown up very close to their family, its been hard to be four hours away. I have joined a sorority and learned many things about myself through the girls i have met. We do everything together, and if it werent for them i wouldnt have the support and be pushed the way my family had been while living at home. It has been so valuable to attend because the class sizes aren't as intimidating as a larger university and you can really get to know your professors and classmates. Everyone around you wants you to succeed and everyone pushes you to reach your goals. I love my university and i can't picture myself anywhere else.

Julia

I have learned a lot so far in my first year at University of North Florida. I love the small school feeling and wasn't sure if i was going to but now i have realized that i enjoy it a lot more. I also really like the school spirit at the games. I have learned to live on my own in a dorm and i have learned how much money you need to live off of.
