University of Oklahoma-Norman Campus Top Questions

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Evan

Students in dorms are, for the most part, very friendly. It is very easy to make friends living in such a close environment. Athletic events are the main thing during the season. The weekend usually begins on Thursday night and that is the case for most students. If you don't drink, then you can do a number of things. There is Lake Thunderbird close-by and other general activities such as bowling and movies are also an option.

Nate

Some people invest a lot of time and effort into the Greek system, but I don't. There is really nothing to do in Norman except drink, and even that is heavily regulated by strict, antiquated laws. If not out at a bar, or club, then there is nothing to do in Norman past 10pm. The theater has shown it's last film of the day, and the bowling alley gets old after a few weeks, and that could be considered a type of club/bar.

KC

The most popular organizations are the honors societies and Greek organization. I'm involved with English Club---it's not very big, but it's interesting. We do a book drive every year. Students leave their doors to their dorms open when they're inside their dorms or nearby but not otherwise. Athletic events are extremely popular, theater not so much. Some guest speakers are popular, some aren't. I know nothing about the dating scene. I met my closest friends in the dorms, in English Club, and randomly. At 2 a.m., I'm either studying or wasting time on my computer. I know nothing about traditions/events except Homecoming. People party a lot, but not everyone. Frat/Sororities are important to many, but not to all. Last weekend I worked, did homework, and ate out. On a Saturday night, you can go to the movies or eat. Off-campus, I shop, eat, etc.

Mark

Greek organizations seem to be popular. OU/Texas football weekend is the biggest event each year.

Alex

The most popular things at OU are the greek organization, campus activities council, and political groups. When I lived in the dorms, I left my door unlocked sometimes. Never when I was sleeping, but not because I was scared. I thought one of my friends might bug me. A lot of people left their doors unlocked. It is very safe in the dorms. I felt very comfortable living there. I met my boyfriend in Intro to Zoology. there are tons of events on campus that allow you to mingle with the opposite sex. I feel there are equal numbers of males and females. Most everyone here is very nice and outgoing. It is very easy to meet people in general. i met my closest friend on my floor in the dorms. I also met some great friends in Nursing School and through my sorority. On a tuesday at 2 am I would be in the dorms hanging with everyone else, or leaving the library because thats when it closed. If you like to party, you will definately find something to do every night. the big nights to "go out" are Thursday and Friday. A lot of people go home on Saturday or have greek date parties. House Parties were a lot of fun freshman year. the bars do not get crowded until 12:00. I feel like fraternities/sororities are important, but you can find things that suit you if you are not that type. There are so many different types of people here.

Andy

About a quarter of the campus is Greek, so it is fairly important. Also, all things relating to football are a big deal. I was in a sorority while on campus. It is a great experience to get to know lots of different people that I might not have other met otherwise. It also encouraged me to become active on and around campus. Most dorm floors become very close and have an open door policy. Football is BIG. of course. There are some really awesome speakers and concerts, which tend to be popular in the spring. The dating scene is about the parties. Guys ask girls to go to a party. Rarely to dinner or a movie, unless they are actually dating. I met my closest friends in my major, the dorm and in the sorority house. I am still close with a lot of them. 2am on a Tuesday was totally normal and usually meant my friends and I were goofing around watching movies or talking in someone's room. Football season, tailgating, OU/TX weekend, Homecoming, U-sing, sooner scandals, the big event, greek rush Depends on the people. Totally. Some people party 6 nights a week, some never party. I would say the norm is Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Fraternities and Sororities are pretty important, but because they are so big they don't really live up to most people's stereotypes. It's a lot like living in the dorms, but cleaner and with better food.

Sydney

Sorority Life and Frats are huge on OU's campus. That is where I have met all of my best friends and I don't know what I would do on the weekends if I didn't rush. I am a Tri-Delt and there is a big mix of girls and I love every second of it. "Dry Campus".... Ya ok. So it may be drier than some other campuses but you can find alcohol every weekend at every frat house you go to. No one is forcing you to drink it, but its there. You have to stay in the rooms in case IFC or whatever comes, but ya its there.

Traci

The greek system is obviously the most popular organization on campus. I'm in Delta Delta Delta, although I'm not as involved as a lot of my sisters are. When I stayed in the dorms, people would leave their doors open sometimes, but my roommate and I were never comfortable with that. I go to a lot of athletic events, and guest speakers, and theater shows, so with me, yes...those are all popular things. Dating scene. It's pretty good...if you're in the greek system and like to meet people, I don't really know about any other situation. I am from Norman so a lot of my closest friends I still have from high school and my other ones are people in the same major as me. 2 am on a Tuesday...working on a project. People party A LOT. Fraternities and sororities can be a really fun thing if you get involved and have fun with it, although it's not for some people, who have other ways of getting through the college years and having fun. They're a good thing to have mostly for the philanthropic things that go on and all of the community service that goes on because of them. I went to Austin last weekend to visit my parents to celebrate my birthday...21st birthday....yeaaahhhh. You can go bowling...go see a movie...hang out with friends...play games...rent a movie...go out to eat...tons of things to do without drinking.

Groups: PanAm (Pan - American student association) is very popular and known for throwing good parties. Of course football is a big deal so there are groups organized around the team. Also, the diversity here has begun to allow small but lauded groups to pop up. Group: OU cousins pairs up American students with exchange students. I love it. My cousin is now like a brother to me. His name is Julien and he is from France. We look out for each other and have had some great conversations. Athletic: This is the Big 12 baby! Football is king in this conference so 85,000 + fans show up at home games. I lose my voice almost every time because of how intense they are. If there is any type of tensions between people, they go out the door here because we are all on that football field. Guest speakers: These draw the intellectual crowd quite a bit. I love going to these because I learn so much. I skipped classes just to be able to listen to Bill Clinton. Theater: There is a crowd for the thespian scene. I know quite a few people who go and I have been to one event, shoot I was almost in the event! Dating scene: Not sure, I am just making friends! Closest friends: I met them randomly, just by showing up at parties or classes. 2 a.m.: I am going to bed! Last weekend: My brothers came to visit me and we went to my friend Angelo's birthday party where we dance to a French song called "Les Lecs du Connemara" Off-campus: I work and eat!

Greek life is HUGE! To get involved on campus, greek society is a great place to start. I met all my closest friends in my sorority and found out about ways to get involved on campus and also received advice about classes to take and classes to steer clear of. Also, Crimson Club Ambassadors is a prestigious group to apply for once you've built up a few activities/offices on your college resume. Football events are definitely popular and you'll find it difficult to get tickets if you aren't johnny on the spot about signing up at the beginning of the year. Freshman.. you might be out of luck, sorry. Basketball is not quite so popular. Students go to games, but it is not the community event like football is. Weekend nights are great in norman. There is always a theatre production on campus or a band/concert on Campus Corner. If you visit Norman, Campus Corner is a must see. There are lots of tasty restaurants popping up all the time. Also, check out the little boutique shopping spots around there. Off campus, students can go to Lake Thunderbird for waterskiing/wakeboarding/fishing/etc. Norman is full of excellent eateries, great shopping, fun bars. The Mont is basically a historic landmark. A bar that has been there since way before the dinosaurs. You must go there and get a Swirl.

Kate

A huge aspect of OU is the greek community, which is very popular here on campus. I am involved in Pi Beta Phi sorority. Most students in the dorms lock their doors, however, I haven't since the first day of school. Football games are very very popular, basketball and other sports are definately overshadowed by football season. I met my closest and only friends through my sorority. If I am awake at 2am on a Tuesday night, I am either studying or hanging out with my boyfriend. People party every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night, unless something special is happening during the week, where in that case a party might happen during a weekday. Last weekend I partied on Thursday and Friday night, and went to a dateparty on Saturday night. When I go off campus, it is usually to make a run to Target or WalMart or the mall. Rarely do I go to the movies or out to eat.

Ainsley

It is mostly about me and Jake. We went for a walk last weekend in the country and he got lost for awile until I found him. I love all the other Delta Omicron Gamma's.

Randy

I don't date much since I have no testoserone.

Sasha

Again, the greek system dominates the social scene. I hate to say it but I cannot imagine anyone's social life without one. Students typically leave their doors open. On the dating scene, date parties typically are the start of most relationships. Last weekend, we had a party at my fraternity, went to a Country Club in Oklahoma City, and just had a great time. Since there is a strong Christian population, you can find others that don't drink and have fun.

Sandra

The social life at OU is very prominant. I am a part of a sorority which I love and am very thankful I am a part of, I have met some of my closest friends through that. I would recommend giving fraternities and sororities a try, but if it is not for you there are many other ways to meet people. The students are very friendly so it is very easy to make friends and there is always something going on that you can be a part of. There is something for everyone from the person who likes to party to the person who would rather not, I have never felt bored.

Reese

Football season was always fun until the last year I was at OU. It seemed like the OU fans from out of town were more unfriendly than ever. My car would always get messed with and they would always make fun of me because I didn't look exactly like them. I felt out of place, even though I most certainly was not. I grew up playing football, and was a huge fan, I just didn't look the part. The dating scene seemed to shrink as I got older. The availability of girls was just smaller. When you live in the dorms, the possibilities are endless, but then you move out and lose touch. Then you can meet people at parties or at friends houses, but the opportunities aren't as frequent. I met most of my best friends during my junior year. I met them all at different times, but many of them weren't even students, and at the time, neither was I. We were all at the same party where we all knew mutual friends and that's how I met them. That's what was fun about OU, is that you have a mutual friend with almost anyone that is on campus. We went to the Library a lot, a bar off-campus, and we spent a lot of time at our friends houses. We had house parties a lot and we went to house parties all the time. That was the extent of our social lives, but our social lives were very healthy. We went to see live music all the time too. I miss my social life at OU.

Katie

I found that many campus groups are resume boosters and that the students were not actually interested in the group itself. I had a terrifc dorm experience. After moving to a house, I lived with four girls from my hall for a year and a half and stayed close with several others. All of my close friends at school I met in the dorm.

Julie

I'm in the greek scence, so that is what I would say. I'm in the tri delta sorority and it's the best. Students leave the doors open in the dorms. GAME DAYS are my favorite day of the year. You can't even explain how much fun it is! The school does an amazing job at bringing speakers in and they are always packed!! I met my closest friends through my sorority and the girls on my hall. If I am wake at 2am on a Tuesday I'm probably studying. OU/TX is the absolute best weekend of the year. It is impossible to expain it. YOU HAVE TO GO!! I go out three times a week, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday!! Thursday is always the most fun!! In my opinion, greek life is everything but I know you don't have to be in one because there are so many other things that you can do!! Last weekend, I went to the bar on thursay night to hear my favorite band, then I went to our date party, totally tri delta, and then I went to another date party on saturday night!!!! Go to bricktown and go to dinner and a movie or hang out with friends, there is always somethig going on!!

Lindsey

Campus Activities Council--heads pretty much everything that happens. Sports Teams in general--if you're an athlete, you have it made. I tutor athletes and honestly, it seems like if you can run fast, you can get paid to come here. But sports bring in a ton of money, and pay me, so I'm not complaining. On game days, Norman basically shuts down for the day. Athletics are huge. On the flip side, theater and music thrive, too. I've seen spectacular plays, operas, ballets, modern dances, and even performances by world-renowned professionals, including a Japanese Noh drummer and an English pianist. Dating is dating is dating. I see pressure to hook up only on the bar scene. But mix alcohol and young people together anywhere and that's a given. I met my closest friends in various places: in the dorms the first week of school, on the South Oval talking about poetry, at Cafe Plaid, and by living next door. The Greek scene is huge. HUGE. But the non-Greek scene definitely exists. Last weekend, I hung out with some girl friends, went to two different house parties, read some poetry at a local reading, danced at a bar, worked, did some arts and crafts, went to Wal-Mart, watched six Turner Classic Movies, and did homework. Alcohol doesn't define fun. Lots of times I find myself randomly hanging out in the street with my neighbors doing cartwheels or taking walks. Kids love to be outside here. I've had picnics, had jam sessions with friends, get coffee a LOT, and see movies. The University offers free movies every weekend, free concerts nearly every weekend and lots of fun events scattered around the campus. Just this week I saw a sign for free sushi and origami-folding in Cate Center. It's funny, in the dorms, everyone locks their doors. But I live near campus surrounded by college students in houses and I leave doors and windows open all the time. It's kind of like a hippie commune around certain areas.

Sarah

The most popular groups and organizations on campus would be all of the Greek life as 1/3 of the campus belongs to one. I am involved in a sorority. I had not a clue what I was getting into but it truly has been a great experience and I have learned a lot about different kinds of girls in general. Some students leave their dorm rooms open but the majority don’t from my experience living in the Honors Dorms. Football is crazy popular like pizza here at OU other athletic events are recognized and well attended but not comparable to football is king attitude here. Guest speakers in the last two years have been amazing! We have had everything from Al Gore to George Bush senior. The theatre department here is also incredible and puts on the most amazing productions. I personally think dating in college is difficult as everyone is mostly headed in different directions with their life and career goals. If I am awake on a Tuesday at 2 AM I am either facebooking or studying for a test. There are ‘traditional events’ that take place here each year such as volunteer opportunities like the Big Event and Dance Marathon. Both are for a good cause. As mentioned earlier Greek life is huge at OU but it is not hard to make friends without being in one. Last weekend I studied one day and the next went to a local bar on campus corner, The Library, and casually hung out with friends. People party here often but it is not the only thing that happens on the weekends. On a Saturday night aside from drinking one can see what the campus union is doing, slumber, movies, dinner, games, concerts, etc. Off campus people generally go to other bars, shop, work, or go to other concerts from what I have heard.

Laura

Campus Activities Council is big, same with Greek life (which is huge). Athletic events are huge, and OU always has great guest speakers. I met a lot of my close friends through my sorority. There was always something going on. I didn't drink until I was 21 and there were always non-drinking activities on the weekends. There are lots of great Christian/church organizations to be a part of.

Andrew

What are the most popular groups/organizations/clubs/teams on campus? CAC, anything greek, Tell us about a group you’re involved with. the rock climbing club. we go rock climbing. Sooners and Seniors We visited old people Do students in dorms leave their doors open? i'm sure some do. i'm sure some don't. the ones that don't probably keep it shut because they are ugly. How popular are athletic events? Guest speakers? Theater? Very popular, less popular, not popular. We are truly full of high culture Tell us about the dating scene. there are girls and boys sometimes they get to getter and have teh sexualz. it's pretty much like anywhere. How did you meet your closest friends? Through climbing. If you’re awake at 2am on a Tuesday, what are you doing? drinking. making out. playing video games. never studying. What traditions/events happen each year? Big Event, some greek rally's of some kind like scandals or something U-sing? i dunno I didn't do that shit. How often do people party? people party often. How important are fraternities/sororities? I'd say on our campus they are more important than most religions. most people in the real world do not agree with this hierarchy. What did you do last weekend? drank, climbed, made out, played video games. good weekend. What can you do on a Saturday night that doesn’t involve drinking? huh? What do you do off campus? climbing, actually everything. campus is a place for learning only.

Valerie

Campus Activities Council is a big student org. Also Greek life is big and intramurals are always fun. I met my closest friends through my sorority. It’s easy to get close to people when you live with them and see them 24/7. If you’re awake at 2am the bars have closed and you’re either studying or your eating Pizza Shuttle. People party a few times a week, mostly on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The university shut down drinking on campus a few years ago but there are still frat parties. They just aren’t as big as they used to be. Other than that people party at houses around town or at bars for those who are old enough. Every bar cards in Norman so you have to be careful if you go out underage. A typical party includes drinking, some dancing, probably drinking games and guitar hero or some form of entertainment. Norman is pretty cheap. Rent is cheap, food is cheap and drinks are cheap. On a typical night 20 bucks would buy you 3 to 6 drinks depending on what your poison is. Greek life is pretty big here. If you don’t drink, don’t worry. You’re not alone. Students go to the movies, bowling, date parties, whatever. You won’t be pressured to drink at parties if you don’t want to.

Matt

The most popular would be Sooner Nation which support all of our sports teams and then you would have the Panhellenic Association which is comprised of most of the sororities and fraternities. I am involved in Phi Sigma Pi which is an honor fraternity with men and women and provides me with an opportunity to give back to OU and the community by service, scholarship, and leadership. Yes our dorms are very laid back and everyone on the hall pretty much has an open door policy. It is very fun in the OU dorms because of the way they are set up and it provides for a great social atmosphere. Athletic events are popular in most sports and attendence wains for the less popular sport like gymnastics, but we do have great programs that all attract national contender hopes. Guest speakers are numerous on our campus and provide great political advice and we have had great professor come and speak. Former presidents Bill Clinton, and George H.W. Bush have recently visited withing the past year about political issues inflicting our nation. We have also had the Hotel Rwanda guy who saved many people from genocide in Rwanda. We are a diverse public speaking university. My closest friend were met in the dorms or through people I met in the dorms. Because of the great social atmosphere it was easy to make great aquaintances. At 2am I would probably be studying for my Economics test or some sort of test coming up because tests here are no slouching matter. Every year we host big event, the big red rally for OU-TX game, and many other events such as Save Darfur day with boxed shacks to help raise awareness. Partying is probably the same as any other decent sized campuses. I would say it is generally the norm. Frats and Sororities are huge at OU. They pride themselves on everything and are a bit snobby and stuck up here. Some are great while others can't get over themselves. Saturday Nights their is tons of stuff to do. Their is OKC downtown which has an awesome movie theatre along with the waterfront. You can go to the Bricktown area and watch a baseball game as well.

Jacob

Greek scene is very big. Athletic events are huge, and there are a good number of quality quest speakers thanks to Boren. Thursday/Friday/Saturday is a big deal. Dont drink? Might look somewhere else...

amy

Most popular groups are the sororities & fraternities, after that is CAC or Campus Activities Council which is in charge of all the campus activities throughout the year. I was a member of Delta Delta Delta, it was a sorority on campus with about 200 members. You go through recruitment in the fall. It's a great experience & a great ways to meet people & get connected on campus. I always left my door open. Athletics are so important. Football is a dynasty here. Guest speakers are pretty popular, I don't know too much about the theater. Dating well dating is a weird thing here. It seems that a lot of people get married right after college, so I guess dating is pretty important. I met my closest friends in Tri-Delta and through other friends. If I am awake at 2 am I am probably studying or finishing a project. Traditions are football games, the medieval fair, student art show. People out every thursday, friday and saturday on campus corner. Fraternities/Sororities are very important, but you don't have to be in one to get connected. last weekend I hung out with my friends & went to a local bar/pub. Saturday night there is plenty going on at the Union & you can always count on your friends to think of something fun. I camp, go to the city, shop, movies, normal stuff.

Alex

Greek life is a big part of OU and football is a pretty big deal here.
