What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Manuela

I would tell myself to finish school and stick towards my goal of obtaining a degree. I got off course and started focusing on my career. I'm back in school now, with a solid plan of achieving my goals.

Erika

Erika, you are fantastic. College is a different experience. It is wonderful and liberating. Your teachers expect the best from you. They are not going to babysit you. They are there to teach and instruct you. You can ask for help and they will be more than willing. Take advantage of that help whenever you need it. Try to finish before you start your family. Essays become so much harder when you type them with a two year old on your lap and three other children in the backround asking for help! I am not saying college can't be completed this way, just that it is easier to focus if those sweet children are not in the background when your studying. My biggest advice, don't let yourself become overwhelmed. You can do this. College prepares you for life. It will give you the opportunities of better jobs, better security, better income. Trust yourself, your smart, YOU CAN DO THIS!

Amy

On my journey back in time to advise my former, high school self with today's knowledge, I would bring a few books for myself to read then, instead of years later. Those books have improved my educational life, as well as my general, daily life. I would deeply explain and encourage the concept of critical thinking. I would tell myself to apply for scholarships and strongly consider attending community college locally before picking up, moving off, and exploring America. I would warn, "If you don't go right to college, you'll wind up attending in your late twenties instead- and it would be much more appealing to travel at that age." I would teach myself meditation, and tell myself to try yoga. I would also agree with my mom and confirm that indeed, your metabolism will slow down (around 26 years old) and you will not always get to eat cheeseburgers and ice-cream sundaes without paying for it later. I'd hug myself goodbye and part with only kind and optimistic words, as I've learned it's best to talk to yourself like you'd talk to someone you love.

Robert

The advice I would give myself is to not waste time and get the education you want and need now instead of waiting to pursue your goals and dreams. I would explain that trying to go to school, have a full time job, and take care of a family all at the same time is very hard and that I wished I had gotten my education done early in life so I could just enjoy life with my family while having the education to financially support them.

College is not easy, sometimes you will doubt yourself, and possibly give up a couple of times during the process; social living, interacting with the wrong crowd, being careless in class, and not focusing, can all be factors of being another statistic as a college dropout. Professors may give you a grade that you think you do not deserve, and mutilpte students, and different classes may bring you down as if you are worthless and not an "A" student. However, those are just milestones that are common in and outside of college coming from not only peers of your class but also family and friends unforunately. The worthiness of yourself is what makes a difference and through all the obstacles that will present itself before you will help you to succeed in college and outside into your profession. Never give up and remember that you are only living for yourself.

Angelina

If I could go back and have a conversation with myself as a senior I would tell myself that time management is key in every situation. I would tell myself to not take out as many loans and to apply for as many scholarships while still in high school as possbile. Lastly, I would tell myself to follow my gut and to not take a break after I graduated.

Finding a balance between having fun, studying for your courses and planning for your next life step is a great way to start preparing for college, since you will be called upon to do this during your college years. Make use of teachers they are great resources not only for course help but also for college advice. They’ve seen countless students make the same leap and can help you find a college, choose a major or balance all of your obligations. slacking is making it hard for you to get in to your dream college, look into community college, distance learning programs and online degrees. Not only will a program like this keep you on the right academic track, you can transfer after a year or when you get your associates degree. Be realistic about your current workload , don't overload yourself always organize and stay on track. Keep up on your assignments, even after a tough week. don’t let yourself lose motivation, procrastinate or slack off completely. keep your eyes always focus on the main goals .. ATTEND all classes including the ACT/PSAT practice course , colleges pay great attention to them & last always try to HAVE FUN !!!

Best Regards, Your Twenty-one year old self.

ALEX

I would have definitely started right after high school. School is the most powerful place one can be in.

Sandra

Go to college right after graduation because then you would have a better chance of achieving the goals you have set for yourself. Do not wait until you are 45 years old to do it. College is very important and the way technology is changing all the time you need training and knowledge to be able to understand it.

Sara

If I could go back in time I would tell my high school self to think longer about what I want to do as a career and to take a more diverse selection of classes. In high school I did not research my original career choice, graphic designer, very well. Most of my classes were art related. If I would not have waited to go to college, I would have wasted my money. There are not many careers for a graphic designer in my area and the ones that are available do care about having a degree. As I have become older, I have discovered my passion for business and how a business functions. I often find myself saying I would I wish I would have taken my high school’s business classes. They would have prepared me better for college and the career I want, Operations Manager.

Fernando

My advice that i would give to myself start college early. Also be focused and what I really wanted. Life is going to be complicated with out a carreer. To set up a short term goal and a long term goal. That would be my advice to myself as a senior in highschool.

Kierra

The advice I would give to my high school self is study hard for the ACT and score a 21 so that I could have many colleges to choose from. Put in applications to colleges eventhough I want to go into the airforce. Always have a plan B just incase plan A dont go as planned. Stay focused on the prize. Times will get hard, but you will survive. Don't party to hard! Set goals for yourself and stick with it. Worry about nothing, Pray about everything!

Victoria

I would tell myself go to a traditional college. I would also tell myself to finish and go straight through without breaks in between.

Na Quanda

I would advise myself to not panic and prepare for college sooner than I previously did. I would also tell myself to stay focused, set goals and then achieve them. Stay on track with course work and use better time management. Interact with people and gain knowledge and resources from them.

Melissa

Everything is an experience. Do good in school to get go grades and keep intouch with high school friends. In the summer volunteer or get a job. You will do great and remember to go with what you feel is right in your heart. Enjoy your time with friends and family. There will be times of struggle but there is always and answer and help out there if you just ask so don't hesitate.

Tumeka

I was advised while I was still in high school to attend a community college. I wish I would have taken that advice. Most of the courses that I have taken here were not needed but I understand the concept to earn a degree and thats what I wanted. But if I could go back to 1992 when I graduated high school, I would have went to a community college for a few years then graduated with a certificate.

Eric

To my younger self I stress the importance of education and the continual necessity of knowledge and a broad exposure to diverse philosophies. The transition from high school to higher learning involves a paradigm shift of thought from learning about history and origins impact on a people or industry, to researching further advancements available as a result of the accomplishment and needs of an advanced people. Discipline and inquiry are the pillars for academic success in higher learning. Discipline forms the standards and routines that are required to investigate the unknown and persevere for answers where the unknown is prevalent. Through a nature quest to ascertain natural phenomena, inquiry drives continued investigations and a desire to deepen and broaden knowledge and application of the acquired information.

Catherine

Just stick with it! Times are going to be tough in the years ahead, but you are going to overcome so many trials and tribulations and you may not believe that you can, or want, to make it through but you will! The things that you are confronted with with pass you and youll learn so much from them. You may not realize it at the time, but when you look back at everything, you wil be greatful for everything that you have been put through. Keep going!

Bridget

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would tell myself to work harder and start college right out of high school so that I can start my carreer right away. Having had my kids and now going to school it makes going to school and doing homework that much harder. I would tell myself to really focus on my school work and to do the best I can becuase in college when I put my mind to it I know I can succed in school. I would tell myself that to live as if today was my last day, make sure that I do everything I want to do and save money for school so that I do not have to take out so many loans and have to pay them off for the rest of my life. Lastly I would tell myself to have fun, study hard, and keep focused on my schooling so I can have my dream of owning my own swimming pool company.

Leslie

Leslie, make a plan and stick with it! Devote yourself to your studies; spend less time with the boys and more time in the library. In the end, the hard work will pay off. While college is a fun place to meet new people, the main objective is to get a good education. At the same time, cherish the friendships you have made; some will last a lifetime. Pay attention to everything your professors say, and try to make your brain a sponge to absorb all the wonderful things you hear. No course is insignificant; all have a meaning for your future life. Stay involved in campus life and continue volunteering for worthwhile causes; some future employers will be asking about your volunteer efforts. Above all, keep a positive attitude! These will be the greatest years of your life!

Kristen

Dont take a break go straight to college after high school.

Rodney

I'd advise me to be be a more focused and dedicated and to set goals that are more realistic and attainable. I would tell myself to spend more time studying and to reach out to all the resources available to help me progress.

Margarit

Graduating high school is a very important and special time of one's life; however it is even more important to choose a right path to adult life. The best advice I would give to a high school graduate would be to have a dream and a vision for the future, make a goal and develop a plan to achieve the goal, work hard every day for that plan, believe, and never give on what you truly believe in. Having fun and partying out with friends are part of that specific age group but in moderation. Prioritizing is an essential skill that makes the very best use of one's own efforts.

OLGA

It's never to late! we all go through difficulty times throughout our lives and no matter how old you are its never to late to change your life style EDUCATION really is the key to success. you decide your future and where you want to be dont let anyone else tell you other wise especially people that haven't got any where in life. There is always a way out prove to your self you can do it regardless of what background you come from. Their is so much help out there for young mothers that people are not awareof unless we get up and actually look we would never know. Don't listen to your friends and take time off to relax and enjoy summer and life after high school your friends will not be the ones to pay your bills. Go straight to college finish and graduate with your degree all before your 22nd birthday while others are wasting their time and still living with parents you'll be driving your own car working in a field you love while proving for your family with no ones help. ITS NEVER TO LATE! Don't wait.

Sonya

I was in such a rush to get out of school I did not plan my life like I should have. I thoguht that I would be alright if I work with min. pay and work my way to a better place with my employer. I am a single parent and I have a prosperous career but I have been in it for so long now I think it's time for a change. I f I could turn back the hands on the clock. I would have had better plans and set goals for myself. Life is you learn from your mistakes as you go through life. I am taking my time to set one goal for myself. I am re-entering school again and I can invision my self in my path of sucess.

Monique

I would tell myself never give up and you are worth something.

Lauren

Dear Lauren, Senior year of high school was a blast for us. We were academically focused, socially involved, and excited about our freshman year at the University of California, Berkeley. We were on top of the world. During our freshman year at UCB, we excelled! We embraced our college experience and gave it every thing we had. However, during our second year, we experienced a life changing event which resulted in us dropping out of school. We initially thought we would only take a semester off but it actually turned out to be five years! During the five years we were not in school, we battled with major depression, doubted our worth, and lost hope of accomplishing the goals we set for ourselves. Every day was an emotional struggle. However, in March of 2012, we mustard up enough strength to enroll at the University of Phoenix. This new journey was difficult at first because we did not believe it ourself. Guess what! We hung in there and our last day of class is August 21, 2014. I want you to know that dreams do NOT have to be deferred. Life isnt what we imagined but it is worth living!

Tyree

If i was to go back in time to give myself advice when i was in high school, i would tell myself that college is not mandatory, its just a choice thats made by yourself. some people go to college because their parents didn't attend college or the university that they chose to go too. another piece of important advice i could give would be, take college serious because its not free and no professor will hold your hand to let you past like they would do in high school. its not just about parties, making new friends and being around a bunch of pretty girls because thats just at any college. when attending a college or a local university, that doesn't mean that you have to get a dorm or a roommate because thats only gonna make the tuition a lot higher because the intrest rates can be high especially if you've taken out a large amount of loans. when taking out loans, take as much as you need to take just for college and as you attend school, pay a certain amount to be able save money while you're attending the local school .

Vanessa

First, I would tell myself to earn better grades in high school and enjoy all that the high school has to offer, in terms of extracurricular activities. I would also encourage myself to complete all my college applications and not be intimidated by the financial burden. There is assistance for me and I need to take advantage of it. I would also encourage myself to go to university out of state or live in a dorm to get the full college experience which would force me to be more independent.

Laura

I would have advised myself to go on to college. Because after High School, I stayed home and within two years later I have had my twin boys, then two years after that I had another boy and finally after two years from that I had a daughter, which I have had to find a job to provide for them while they were growing up. I don't regret having my babies. I love them all. Now they are of age in adulthood. I figured I would go back to college and get my degree. I am setting a good example for my children, maybe one day they'll get their degree too. Now in our new generations I advised these students to on to college, because later on in life they'll have a better chance of landing an excellent job in the future.

Cassandra

Dear high school senior,

Arely

If I could go back in time an talk to myself as a high school senior i will tell myself to focus on my studies. The transition form high school to college was a huge challenge for me. I assumed that it was going to be easy, and i let alot of distractions get on the way of my studies. It wasnt until i statred failing and all the afterwards consequences that i learned how important school is. As for advice i will tell myself not to procastinate on my studies and homework, to attend class, and to set my priorities first before any freind and entertainment.

Annie

If I had the opportunity to go back in time, I would tell myself, "Keep going! You can finish your college education. Although you are a mother and a military wife, you can make it!" I would reassure myself that it's all going to be worth the tears and restlessness and that my family is going to be so much more better off just because I hung in there and completed my college education. I would be holding my Masters of Science Degree in my hand and I would say, "See all you had to do is believe. You have the faith and the ability to achieve anything you desire in life so don't allow anything to hold you back or make you feel like what you are working to achieve is not for you. It is for you and it yours if you are willing to trust in God and believe in yourself that you can stay the course." I would say, "Thank you Annie for believing in yourself".

Heather

I would tell myself not to shortchange my education, to go for the highest degree possible and not to take any breaks inbetween. I would tell myself to hang in there and that it is possible to achieve my degree, not to get discouraged. It is hard to see the end goal sometimes, but that earning my degree will benefit greatly in the long run. I would also tell myself that I am doing a good job, and to stay on track and motivated.

Angela

I would strongly encourage myself to go on to college after high school and hang in until graduation. I could have avoided a great deal of financial hardship, frustration, low self esteem, and traumatic events if I had listened to my parents and stuck with college.

Tiffany

If I could go back in time as a high school senior and have the knowledge about college life and making the transition, I would utilize my resources to research different colleges and programs they offer. I would also make better financial plans for my tuition, room, and meal plans. Lastly, I would have explored different colleges to learn more about college life and talk to students who are or have experienced the college life. The best advice I would have given myself is research and network with other students and mentors about college opportunities.

LESLIE

Leslie, college is NOT high school! Be prepared to study, study, study; don't be afraid to ask questions and to get help with the subjects that give you the most trouble. Take time to make friends - the friends you make in college will last your lifetime! Be wise in your choices; think about the consequences...every action carries a consequence! Get plenty of sleep, eat the right foods, and start exercising NOW! Take care of your health...it will run out in due time. Quit the junk foods because you might not always be thin! Eating the right foods will also help you in your schoolwork...plenty of proteins, fruits, and veggies, fewer sugar-laden snacks! Control your hormonal urges! Just because it feels good doesn't mean you should do it! Again, think about the consequences! Above all else, keep your eyes focused on God...He will never leave your nor forsake you; He will ALWAYS be there for you! He IS your everpresent help in times of trouble!

Amelia

I would tell myself to enjoy my time in highschool, because after graduation, there will be no more bells or lunch breaks. You are in charge of everything once you get to college. You have to prepare to take on a lot of responsibility in a very short time. In addition, I would tell myself to pay close attention to the classes I'm picking out, and to make sure that I'm not choosing ones that would leave me waiting for hours in between them. Finally, I would tell myself that college will be a lot easier than I'm expecting, and that I should relax because I'm going to be absolutely fine.

Ashleigh

My college experience have brought me to a level of understanding that the rules and guidance received from my mother growing up in a single household is true in order for me to be successful while on this road to getting my degrees. The college life and what has been planted in me from my mother is a continued pattern of growth and development. I know now how to effectively communicate with those in administrative office, take directions and guidance from those in the financial Aid and business office and at the same time, being patient during the process. This college experience can be challenging because one must reach a level of maturity to know that he or she is attending college not to party but to fulfill and accomplish their goals. My college experience has taught me to be very independent from cleaning my dorm room, following dorm rules and regulations, attending classes and being on time. I feel that college is an experience that many should not just desire but actually attend for education, growth, fulfillment and success. I must say, I am so excited and I look forward to a great road to success and accomplishments.

Sierra

What I have gotten out of my experience dealing with college is that , I have teachers who believed in me and they know what they are talking about, and has no problems on helping out the students. I have intresting and unique classmates who comes from all over the place. I have learned new ways of processing information and using that on a test. The friends that I have made at the college, and the closeness that we have become to one and another. How it been valued to me is that college help me become the person that I am. College made me challenge myself to ways that I have never been challenged before. My family have been proud of me for attending college and having confidence to want to do my all and succeed to the highest that I can go. I was able to have better grades than what I recieved in high school, and be able to keep those same grades again and again. The value that I see from attending college is the confidence that I have gotten knowing that I have the way to become someone who feels better in their skin, and mind.

Toni

It is through education, particularly increasing your knowledge, that you have a better opportunity for the type of life you set out ahead for yourself. Where one does not have knowledge one cannot progress. You will stay stagnant like a magnet attracting nothing and going nowhere. Quality of life, how does one achieve that? I am sure that this answer varies; however, it is safe to say by choosing to gain knowledge through education and go to college an individual will always be moving and progressing in a forward motion. Choosing to improve oneself through knowledge and a higher education would never be a waste of time or money because an individual improves. A true return on your investment! Yes, one may say I don’t need education to make money. However, I would tell them you are a fool to limit yourself and your potential by limiting your scope of skills and knowledge stifling your own growth and not allowing yourself to learn something new and valuable for a lifetime! I believe that investing your time and money by going to college and getting your education, boundaries are endless and the time and choice made is never a waste.

Eric

I souldn't have waited 20 years!

Harold

It has giving a sense of pride and accomplish not only for me but for my kids. I want my kids to follow my example and go to college and graduate with a degree, but if I don't led by example then how can I expect my kids to be succesful in life. College has giving the tools I need to folow my dream, to one day become a high school counselor and helps those kids in need, the one abuse by parents, neglected by their parents and maybe told by their parents that would never accomplish nothing and life, why becouse I can related to them and I can show them that no matter what , if they are willing to go after their dream, they can accomplish it.

Barbara

I was a non-traditional student from the outset, as I took the Fall semester off and had a child immediately following high school. I preservered for ten years going to community college and then graduating with my Bachelors degree from the University of Phoenix in April 2002. What I learned during the process was tenacity, team work, relying on myself, and proof that I could overcome the odds.

At Blinn College in Texas, I'm an active member of PTK Honor Society and Sociology Club, as well as president of Anthropology Society, which I helped establish in October 2009. As president of Anth Society, I've organized other campus groups to help restore a local abandoned cemetery. This project made the front page of the local paper and received great support from the community. Also, I attended the American Academy of Forensic Sciences Conference in Seattle and the PTK Texas Regional Conference in Houston this semester. These were invaluable learning opportunities. I hope to have the funds to do more in the coming year. The point of this essay is to give thanks to Blinn College for making these opportunities possible. I could not have done any of these things without the support of faculty, staff, and fellow students. I love being part of this college. It offers so much to students. If I'm awarded this scholarship, I will use it wisely, and will strive as hard as I can to be a student who contributes to my school and represents it in a positive way. Thank you for considering my application.

Tamicko

So far I have been able to do thing that I thought i had forgot. But the school that I am attending is very supportive. Being a single parent of 4 school has giving me a since of independence. I finally feel that not only can I do something for myself but , I can set a good example for my children. And this feels great.

claritta

I have learned more from the University of Phoenix than i have at any other university, due to the fact of the flexible full time schedule that they have. I am able to attend school full time once a week, and still manage my work and family life as well. The faculty is a combination of experienced proffesionals who are very interactive with their students. I know that when i leave the university of phoenix, I will be well prepared for my proffession. I have met friends that I am sure I will have for the rest of my life!

Steven

Waiting almost ten years after my high school graduation to finally attend college, I have a unique perspective on college. I have been in the workforce for the past ten years and have learned first-hand the difficulties associated with having only a high school diploma. My job has become increasingly less interesting and I have reached the income cap for my current profession and so college has opened up both financial and intellectual options for me. My college experience has been intellectually stimulating, given me purpose, helped me find direction, but mostly it has given me hope. I have the hope of providing a better life for my wife and children and I have the hope of a promising career in a field that I both love and have been trained. College has changed my life and the value I have received has far outweighed the numerous sacrifices and costs to attend.

Kyle

I haven't been to college yet.
