What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Sean

There are a lot of papers to write in colleges. I would tell anyone in high school to get more help in writing papers. The things that I learned in high school did not prepare me for college material.

Work on finding yourself and figuring out what you want in life. Once you figure out what you want out of life, do everything you can to get it. Finding yourself is a life-long journey. Be happy with you are, and don't worry about finding that significant other. I found that once I was perfectly happy with where I was in every aspect of my life, EVERYTHING fell in to place. Be involved in as many clubs and extracurriculars as possible. This will allow you to make friends and establish networking opportunities not otherwise possible. Don't be afraid to be a "nerd" and learn. Learning is the most important thing you will do in college, and not just learning about academics. Learn about other people, careers, and anything that interests you. Be a genuinely good person. Your personality will go a long way. Be the good you wish to see in the world!

I would tell myself to pass all my classes with at least a C and do go out and party as much. High school is not anywhere near like college. In high school you could get away with a lot of things but in college you have to be your own parent to yourself and make the right decisions. Always attend class and never sleep in class like how I did in high school believeing I would still pass doing that.

Work hard and don't let know one get in the way.

I would tell myself to take this last year more seriously and study really hard. I would especially take more ACT prep classes because at a private university (Pikeville) the higher your ACT score, the more money you will be able to recieve towards tuition. I would have told myself to take the college courses that Pikeville offers because it would give me a head start on completing the hours that I need to become and Accountant. I would tell myself to take more advanced courses rather than just ones that got me by. I would have wanted to make better grades to get a higher GPA that allowed me to receive more KEES money. I would have visited campus more often so that I would have been more familiar with my surroundings than I was my freshman year. Finally, I would have told myself to take college seriously because it is expensive and important for my future that I make good grades to keep my scholarship money, because theres no point in paying for a bad grade.

Don't settle for the first school that accepts you or the only school you visit. Weigh the pros and cons of each school. Never think that you can't afford a school either. There are plenty of scholarships to help pay for school. Choose a major that you are truly interested in and follow your dreams. Sending a child away to school is hard for parents. Know that your son or daughter will make the right decisions based on how you raised them. Don't under estimate him or her.
