What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

ELIZABETH

I would have to say the stereotype type is every student loves it here and from what I have been told they actually do not. Some had to attend here to either make their parents happy or avoid loans because they would be out-of-state students elsewhere. I love it here it would break my heart to leave because I cannot afford it.

Samantha

My school is generally very preppy. You do not see a lot of people wearing sweats or pjs, most of the guys wear either frat tshirts, polos, or button-downs with khakis. The girls always look good, everyone wears makeup and dresses well. You will either see girls in tshirts and nike shorts, dresses, or skirts and nice tops. Even while wearing tshirts, every girl pretty much looks made up. The thing about my school is that there is not a huge variety of groups of people, probably about 90{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the students dress as i described, and although only 25{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} are greek, about 90{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} look very southern proper. I really do believe that our reputation as a southern school is very accurate. Our school is centered on football and tailgating, which is a huge southern tradition with lots of beer drinking and fun, which is something you dont find in the north. We are also very southern in that we do have very traditional values and do believe that in most cases boys and girls should not be in the same housing, so the majority of dorms for females are not co-ed. We have just as many co-ed dorms as we do all-female dorms, as of the last 3 years, and we do still have all-male dorms as well. We are definitely a very fratty school in general because we do have such a huge greek community, and it has an enormous impact on campus life.

A lot of people say that USC is notorious for being a school filled with people only involved in Greek life, however, there are so many other ways to get involved and other greek letter organizations that are not social, but involve different philanthropies such as community service work and honors societies.

Mario

Stereotypes are rarely seen at USC. Since it's mostly a family affair, there is respect towards everyone. Frats and sororities have the biggest groups on campus, but they will always be respectful to other groups. There is also a big group of international students that relate well with local students. Even though USC has its fraternities, the university itself is a fraternity to all its students.

Nan

It seems a lot of students are kind if sporty and active and likes to party.

Adam

A lot of people see the University of South Carolina as a "typical party school" because of the problems with Greek life these last couple of years. I assure anyone looking into this great university, that it is all about the friends and people that you meet! Do not let any stereotype scare you away from this university, or any university for that matter.

Sarah

There is a "greek" stereotype that is pretty much consistent for all campuses I would say. The greeks tend to be partiers but they only account for about 12{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the school's population. There are also the athletes who are typical jocks and tend to hang with themselves. I'd say the overall stereotype, though, is country. Most of the kids at South Carolina come from small towns in South Carolina. We have accents and wear cowboy boots and listen to country. So the overall stereotype is country, and I think it is accurate for the most part.

LaShauna

It's a family affair. Everyone comes together to have fun. There are a lot of frat kids but everyone is treated the same

james

some people expect southern rednecks, but the campus life is the meaning of diverse

Katelyn

The majority of the students at my school are in Greek Life because Greek Life is huge in the south. We have a reputation for being the southern sorority/fraternity kids who live for football season.

Marie

There are quite a few stereotypes at USC including frat guys and sorority girls. I personally am not in a sorority but many people think that all sorority girls are rude and snobby and all frat guys are stupid and constantly partying. Neither of these are true. Even though sororities and fraternities get a bad reputation for drinking and hazing, they also do a lot of philanthropy work and are a way of meeting many new people. A lot of the sorority girls that I know are not rude and snobby at all but are actually down to earth people just like everyone else. That is the same for fraternity members. Even though some people fit the stereotype, it doesn't mean that you should immediately shut out everyone else who belongs to their group.

Zachary

The typical stereotype for USC would be the traditional party going fraternity, sorority student. USC is ranked in the top 50 party schools in the country. While parties are a part of any college this is an oversimplification of what the campus has to offer. Fraternities and sororities are about much more than partying. They offer community, support, and a multitude of other opportunities. The stereotype is inaccurate. While some fraternity members are concerned with partying, the majority of them join for the community, brotherhood, and service that USC Greek organizations have to offer.

Being one of the first universities established in the South, our school does have a "Southern belle/ gentlemen" stereotype. When you compare it to schools in the north it fits the stereotype because the guy hold open doors for the girls and a large percentage of our school is involved in the Greek system. However, where there are stereotypical students, there are also those that don't fit the stereotype. Like any college, USC brings together many stereotypes.

Brandy

The university has done a wonderful job making sure that every possible stereotype is found within it's walls.

Jennifer

We have a notoriously high rate of participation in Greek Life. Some might think that makes us a party college, and while we do know how to have fun, we also have serious students. It's not all party and it's not all Greek. Unlike what you may see on TV, the frats and sororities mingle with with non-Greek students as well. Some might also think we are extremely southern, but we have a high rate of out of state students. Most people who go here are intelligent and open-minded.

Aubrie

The sterotypes at the University of South Carolina are broad. Because USC is such a big school we have all kinds of sterotypes, there is the fratties, sorority girls, jocks, and then just your normal everyday student. Fratties is a term used to describe Frat guys meaning they wear preppy clothes and their dads are rich. I have found that not all Frat guys are like this and some of the Frats are very relaxed but there are some extreme cases of Fratties on campus. Also the sorority girls come with the same logo as Fratties, but all sorority girls are not like that. Almost every sorority girl I have met I liked a lot. The jocks consist of all the athletes and they stand out everywhere because they all have certain bookbags. The "Jock" sterotype is not true at all I am friends with a few football players and a track runner. So for the most part the sterotypes you hear about USC students are not true.

Jeremy

Every stereotype seems to have some sort of truth involved unfortunately...but of course there are many other diverse groups of students. There is ample opportunity to be who you WANT to be so don't worry about stereotypes too much.

Joshua

We're most known for our jocks, our Greeks, and...well...our drunk party-goers. It's an unfortunate stereotype, but what can you do, right? While it is true that some students here do still have the attitudes and judgement of middle schoolers, it is absolutely true that if you keep your eyes open and your priorities straight, you can find mature and intellectually challenging friends everywhere you look at USC. You won't be able to get away from the lower rungs of academic society no matter what school you go to, but at the University of Columbia, those individuals are at least outnumbered and easily avoided. If you have the credentials, enroll in the Honors to be surrounded by top-notch students like you by default. Good luck!

Ashton

If there is a stereotype for South Carolina, it would definitely be that it is a party school. Although this is true, any school you choose will have partying or drinking at it. Everything just depends on what you choose to get involved in. So if you want to party you can party, if you want to get involved then you can get involved.

Erika

... opposites all rolled together. Everyone is super Southern friendly, holdin' open doors and starting up conversations with students they meet in the elevator. Greek life is HUGE on this campus and everywhere you go, you'll see students dressed to the T in their Lily Pultzer and Polos & khakis. But at the same time, everyone is happy to chill in their workout shorts & tees, and on rainy days, to wander the campus barefoot. As a Gamecock, you better be really to tailgate for hours on end every Saturday throughout the fall semester, and party it up. We take serious pride in our football, so you better be updated on every game. Yet everyone still loves TCoop (the main library) and, as it is open 24/7, you will pull an all nighter at least once during your time here. We are proud, fun, carefree, open, and a chummy community.

At first, when hearing the name University of South Carolina one would expect to come to a campus of stereotypical Southerners. Then upon further hearing that some of the Civil War was actually fought on our campus, one definitely gets the image of slow talking Confederates. But on the contrary there is actually quite a diverse mix of students. There is a common North vs. South atmosphere as the school has begun to fill up with kids from the North looking to escape the cold weather. However, don’t get me wrong there is no lack of Southern Charm here. Greek village is filled with students from all around the country dressed in proper SEC game day attire. Sorority girls flocking in their black dresses and pearls while fraternity men show off their garnet bow ties and khakis. While Greek organizations may have the stereotype of being stuck-up partiers, they are actually major leaders on campus and participate in more community service then most other campus organizations. When they are not playing in the games that everyone is watching, the football players are definitely the big guys on campus. They are basically like pro athletes, but sitting next to you in English class.

I would say that the main stereotype about the University of South Carolina is frat stars and sorority girls. A large percent of our population is Greek and I admit I am too. I do, however, have numerous friends not in Greek life and absolutely LOVE carolina! The stereotype is accurate, but it is not accurate in describing what stereotype you must fit to have fun at the school.

I would say a stereotype of my school, like a lot of Southern schools, would be a huge emphasis on involvement in Greek life. In reality, there are many more non-Greeks than Greeks at the University of South Carolina. There is little pressure here to go Greek, and while most freshmen have at least a few friends or hall-mates that rush, the majority of people you meet will not be rushing. Also, people hold the view of the "stereotypical" Greek student. While some of the sororities and fraternities promote the specific stereotypical image, there are many of them that are unique and more "chill". If you are interested in Greek life at USC, there are many different sororities and fraternities, so one will likely catch your interest. I know several Greek students that definitely do not fit the stereotypical image, but they all love their respective Greek organizations and are happy they got involved.

Samantha

I don't think we have one.

Kenesha

The University of South Carolina offers a huge diverse population. At USC every student has a place where they belong: rather it's playing football or volleyball, being a geek and joining the university academic team, or joining an organization of your choice to give back to the community. If you decide to join an organization or not at the end of the day we are all one group of students who are proud to be at Carolina and a Gamecock.
