What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Mallory

It is hard to sum up what I have gotten from my college experience this far in only 200 words. During my senior year in high school, I made the decision to enroll in college early. I started attending college full-time during my senior year. I can honestly say this was the best choice I have ever made. I am now about to graduate with my associates degree, while everyone else my age has just started their first semester of higher education. College has helped me grow, not only academically, but as a person. I am a lot more confident during job interviews and just talking to people in general because of attending college. College forced me to come out of my shell and make new friends during group work in class. I am much better at time management, and I feel that my work ethic has improved since I began to attend college. College has also greatly expanded my knowledge in many areas. Overall, I feel like a much more rounded person because of my college experience.

More than Science, English, Spanish and Math I've learned the direction of my life's path. I've made new friends and worked in teams; I've heard their stories, hopes, and dreams. I've learned how myself to express, It's the basis of my identity, The foundation of my success. This will give me a better career, I'll never again be a cashier. But more important, I will keep my mind free. New people, ideas, I'll be able to see Because of school, my mind stays young, So that I may hear the songs unsung. Life is a lesson that must be learned, And the more I've learned, the more I've earned.

I have received many things out of my college experience thus far. I am no longer living at home; therefore, I have had to learn to support myself without any financial help from my parents. I have had the opportunity to meet many great people, in students and professors. Despite how difficult the classes are compared to high school classes and dual enrollment courses at a community college, I have learned to manage my time wisely and to do whatever it takes to succeed in all of my classes. It has been valuable to attend the University of South Florida because I know that I am a student at one of the most prestigious universities in the state of Florida. I am also majoring in biomedical sciences, and the University of South Florida has a great science program along with a wonderful medical school. There is a Shriner's Hospital for Children on campus, which is beneficial for me since my dream is to become a pediatrician.

Olivia

It has provided me with knowledge that will allow me to obtain my degree and eventually apply to medical school. It has also given me the opportunity to meet and interact with people from all different walks of life, many of whom I would not have gotten to know otherwise.

Benjamin

THe value of learning have been the main thing i have learned from the whole college experience. I have to say that all of schooling before college was drab and boring. Back in the middle school and high school levels, I found math tolerable and science slightly engaging, but it was far below the standard for what was worth my time. It wasn't until I dual enrolled at my local community college that I learned that I love learning, in all it's shapes and forms. What before was a mild toleration or occasional interest in a few select subject that were boring and easily mastered grew into a burning passion to learn about subjects across the board, expanding from math and science into literature and history. All the subject suddenly became engaging, challenging and utterly enjoyable to learn. This experience has changed the course of my life. One who was once a slacker, slumming along to maintain "superior" marks with the base amount of effort needed transformed into a student with the passion to learn all that he can in the little time he is given.

So far I have learned in collage the pleasure of the procrastination(Spelled wrong most likely) does not exist and those who learned how to do so in high school can have a hard time keeping up in classes and the urge to procrastinate should be dealt away with as soon as possible for it can really affect you like it did to me. I also got better when it came to teamwork with my joining of the Harborside Activities Board. I am so glad I joined and I am so happy we have them on our campus the activities are a blast whenever I can attend.

Joshua

I have taken many things in life for granted. My parents have supplied my every need and I took advantage of them. I am filling out this application because I have had a change of heart. My best friend passed away in a car wreck in July of 2010. One of the last lessons he taught me was that to do right by people and earn your right to this world. After that date, I told myself that I would stop being lazy and do the right thing no matter who tells me I cannot. I understand that I forfitted my right to certain aspects of college by participating in some actions but I am asking for a second chance to do the right thing. I want to be able to treat people as fairly as I can, and help others excel. With this scholarship, I will have this opportunity to do this. Thank you for your consideration and time. Josh Crowe

It opened a whole new perspective on the world, especially considering the fact that I come from Puerto Rico. It has tested me to be able to live in harmony with people with different ideals. It has culturally and academically enriched me. And I have made a lot of friends in the process. Why is it valuable to attend? The immense value of this education is very hard to communicate with words but I'll try me best. It is this education what constructs a nation for the future. It is the biggest investment the government (and our selves) make. The person I have come to be would not have been possible if it were not for education.

Nicole

I have learned responsibility, self motivation, time management, financial management, and I have greatly improved my social skills and made many friends by joining a sorority, it is extremly expensive but I would like to stay in it as long as possible. It is going to be tough to come up with enough money to pay my rent, dues, and tuition as well as food and other expenses. Getting a job after college is tough so being in a sorority will help me by building up my resume with leadership experience, it will help me network, and it will raise my self confidence and work ethic.

College experience helped me gain better insight about acamedic research. I learned that I should search for the information, no one will find for me and teach me. This is me who is strive for the education, so this must be me who search the information and learn. I learned I have to organize my schedule very well, because it is the key of success. Instead of working in one day ten hours, I prefer to study everyday one hour; but I never miss that one hour. I have an aim , being a professor in university, and I will never give up. I will do my best , and I hope I will achieve!

My parents came from Vietnam at a young age and never had the oppurtunity or experiences others had growing up and unforunately that was how they learned to live . The only chances I had to see and be a part of the 'outside world' was through school. The information I gained in high school however was limited and vague. My parents' lack of desire to see the world and expand their knowledge beyond what they already knew was all I knew growing up. I never considered the fact that there were things I didn't know about and I never had the desire to go out and seek them. It wasn't until college that I realized there was so much out there to learn and see. College brought out a curiousity and thirst in me I didn't know was there. I enjoy learning new things and pushing myself to grow educationally, personally and someday, hopefully, financially. College has helped me grow in every way possible and has opened the world to me. It is providing me with the tools and information to expand not just my knowledge, but also who I am as a person.

I have discovered many things about what kind of people develop from attending college. People mature differently than those who don't attend college and it really does have an impact on how your future can unfold. The kind of people you meet and the friends that you make will last for a long time and it's something that you can feel by just being at the school and being able to interact with these people. It has been an incredibly valuable experience because it has allowed me to really contemplate what I want to do with my life and where my goals should take me when I see other people trying so hard to reach their own goals. I think it is that which makes college students more motivated; being able to see peers of the same age trying just as hard to get where they want to be in the future.

I was able to prepare for a professinal position in my field and learn what is expected of my role as a professional. The other important thing I experienced in college is learning the appropriate skills in my chosen field that is necessary to be a valuable asset to the company that will hire me. College is an imporatant institution to attend for many reasons. It's diversity which is the real world we will encounter after completion of the program. Most of all the internship programs. I believe, it allows us to practice the skill that are taught at the professional colleges and learn from the mistakes that we make so we can review and practice more on what we lack and built self confidence before graduation. Lasly, college allows us to be educated individuals.

Aaron

I love being able to go to college. I have gotten a quality education out of college and gained valuable life skills that will help me after graduation. Attending college helps you to really understand what your role in life is after you leave home to embark on your own journey. It helps you to get a grasp on what exactly it is that you need to do, and see just how much work you really have to put in to achieve what you desire.

Travina

I have received the full college experience from being here for almost two semesters (summer and most of fall). I have been able to see what it is like to live on my own and make my own personal decisions in life. I value this experience because it has taught me a lot about how to live on my own with all the responsibilities that I will have to take control of in the future. Also, I greatly appreciate everything I have learned from my professors and the idea of taking classes that I want to take.

Stacey

What I have gotten is a sense of who I am as a person. I learned how to become a leader. I also learned how to balance schoolwook with my social life.

Rachelle

This is only my first term of college, so I don't have too much experience so far. What I have learned though is that it takes a lot of energy to be in school and working at the same time, homework is a must in order to get good grades in your classes, and sleep is a major factor. Basically all the normal things that you always hear from your friends and family that went and are going to college. Going to college will be valuable to me because it will give me what I need to get a job after high school to make a great living out of and raise a family with. It will also help me be more responsible, and I am hoping it will help me to not procrastinate as much as I do now.

Alexa

Unlike most of my graduating class, I didnt go away to college. I didnt get to do the dorm room thing, or the Sorority thing or the whole "Party every night" thing. So i really didnt feel like i was getting the true "college experiance". I spent my whole first year visting friends at various colleges over the weekends. I was green with envy. I wanted to be living that life. However, as my second year at the local community college started, I noticed many familar faces. Students that went off to Usf, FSU , FGCU, or someother Univeristy and got lost in the shuffle and failed out. Ive come to the point that I am so thankfull for my 2 years at a community college. It was a great transition period for me. To learn independece without being thrown into it. I am now ready to transfer to the University of my choice (fingers crossed that I get in!). I know for certain that i will be successful, while being able to get the college experiance I have always wanted.

Nahomie

My college experience has been invaluable. I've grown tremendously and more importantly have really learned about myself. Everyday is a "crash course in getting to know Nahomie-101". With every decision I make, all the characteristics that define me are a little more pronounced and it's honest, real, and wonderful. Attending college has allowed me to meet fascinating people not only including friends, but also professors, research assistants, volunteer coordinators and coworkers. The networking is phenomenal. More importantly, with the knowledge gained, I've been able to transition from a student to a young professional. I'm more passionate now than ever about my future profession and college has helped confirm my desire to serve others.

I was not ready to be on my own without my parents help and care but living on campus has tought me how to take care of my things on my own. Class is also very different then high school but they teach you not only the subject but also how to be responsable to look up and do all your work on your own and make one responsable for all work. I have made a few good friends and learned to bond with my room mates, although all from different backgrounds we are all there for the same reason to succed.

Brandy

I am proud of being a student at USF and I will tell other people to go there as well. I plan on applying there for graduate school.

Demarcus

By attending college, I have gotten out that if you do not study you will struggle alot. I have also learned that it nothing comared to high school and that the professors will not "baby" you like high school teachers. Most inportantly, college is a huge leap from highschool. College has been valuabe to attend because college is what is going to determine what tyoe of lifestyle you will live in the future.

Courtney

I have gotten a great educational experience out of my community college. I have received much academic and hands-on learning. I have gotten some knowledge from professors in their field. I have learned to manage my time with courses. I have learned to be responsible and account for myself and actions. It has been valuable to attend because I continue to learn new things. I get great one on one help if needed. I was able to grow in learning the college without actually being at a four year college.

Alex

Returning to school, first to finish my BA and not to work on my MA, has been so valuable because it allowed me to prove to myself that I could do it, I could finish. While I highly value learning that comes outside of the formal academic sphere, to dive back into college and surface, successful, was an invaluable experience. It's also been a great tool to help my children seen what college requires and how to set and meet goals.

Ashlie

I have gained a lot in college so far, I was home schooled in high school so I missed out on the experience of a class room and college has given me that opportunity. The classes and teachers have allowed me to grow more as a person and stretch my mind to lengths I never thought possible. The teachers challenge you to be a better person and to do better at your school work. I have always been horrible at math but so far I have succeeded with more than just a passing grade, the teachers don’t just assign the work and leave you to it. They are there to explain, help you further, and offer you student services to make sure you receive further help. My college experience has been very valuable and I’m guessing it’s going to continue being a great asset to my life and I will never be thankful enough to the teachers that have helped me thus far.

Sarai

I haven't took any classes yet. I enrolled in community college and im excited to start. All I need is some finacial help to get started. I love school but unfortunatly don't have the money to attend. I know that college will help me better myself in the future and im excited to start.

Keonna

What I have gotten out of my college experience is that you can't and won't learn all there is to know through a class and textbook. Most times you have to go out on your own to seek a lot of the knowledge and information that interests you. Thus it has been valuable to attend in learning that college isn't the end-all-be-all to making it in life.

Jayni

I am making the transistion from high school into the very different style of college life, and I feel that College of DuPage is a great school to help make this transition easier. There are many resources available at College of DuPage to help students achieve in school and they want to help you become the best student that you can. College of DuPage focuses on teaching students valuable lessons for after graduation that will help you become a better person and a well round individual.

Michelle

I have had a highly valuable experience at the USF for I have had academic support and have been able to grow and mature as a young woman. USF has offered me opportunities to volunteer at Moffitt Cancer Center in Radiology Nursing so I can gain insight and knowledge about patients coping with Cancer, and my future career as a Nurse. Furthermore, I have been able to engage in research at the College of Nursing with transcribing and analyzing qualitative date regarding simulation. These opportunities, among others, have helped me gain leadership skills and fulfill my self- efficacy since I am taking part in finding new discoveries. I have also matured to a highly focused and dedicated young adult since I have been at USF because I have learned how to be responsible and manage my time wisely. Between working as a Pharmacy Technician, Volunteering at Moffitt, participating in research, and attending class, I have been very busy. It is apparent to me how important it is to continuously study and yet not procrastinate. I am very conscientious and studious and I feel my attendance to USF has contributed to my qualities and has provided me with remarkable experiences.

Melissa

I have learned many skills while attending college and if i hadnt attended i wouldn't be where i am today. It has been invaluable towards my success. I've learned how to not only manage my time but to ask for help when i need it. Life is hard and thats hwy there are so many people around us. We might have been born alone but we walk together. Together we can help each other study for courses and not be lonely at lunch.

So far my college experience has been worthwhile. I have made relationships that will never be forgotten. Iv'e done things I that I thought were not possible. I learned to break out of my shy shell, and open my eyes to the world. A secondary education is a really important aspect of an individual's life. The college expericne allows you to experience new things, and meet new people while furthering your education. You will learn so many valuble lessons that will follow you for the rest of your life. College is a positive experience to look back on in the future.

Leontyne

At the time that I entered college I had just been fired from a dead-end job and I knew that I had to do something to better my circumstances. By attending college that made my family very happy because I am accually the second to attend but the first tso receive a degree. I felt like I was on the top of the world because to go from a freshman to a senior is a great feeling. Of course it took me 8yrs to finish because I had a child to raise and work all at the same time. It has definitely opened quite a few doors for me but now once again it is time to go even further. I've been on top of the world but now it's time to reach the moon!

Meagan

I have learned time and money management. I have to pay for my own college so I have learned the value of an education.

Rebecca

I've learned many lessons in college and accepted responsibilities that I did not have in high school. The classes require you to be mature and accept that attending class is your responsiblity, as well as keeping up with your homework. Not only have I gained an educational knowledge that i will forever have but i've also learned many life experiences that I cannot out a price tag on. College is a community like no other and gives you the decision to make choices for yourself. I've learned the value of money and how expensive school is just to be more knowlegeable in the future. Although my education is costly, I wouldn't trade it for the world because I know I'm attending school to better myself in the future so I can make something of myself. College gives you a reality check and starts to release the responsiblities from your parents onto you.

Pooja

There are many skills and valuable knowledge that I have gained from living at a dorm as well as being a college student. It was my first taste of independence. Neither my parents nor my professors were there to push me to try my hardest--it was all up to me. This is very valuable because now I feel that I can do anything I put my mind to, and no one can stop me from reaching my goals if I keep my eyes on the prize. Attending college has taught me responsibility, determination, and persistence.

Chlory-Ann

I've gotten so much information about my major, Psychology, that I had no idea about. What I've learned from this school and it's professor's is that a great education is everything. You can get so much more out of life when attending a great school like USF. It's been very valuable to attend this school because it's only motivated me more and more to follow my dreams and be successful. I have no doubt that I will be able to achieve so much once I graduate from the University of South Florida.

Paschelle

I've gotten more knowledge about life then I have ever expected and more responsibility. Most of all college has taught me to be more independent and aware of the cause and effects of actions that i take when it comes to my school work. Attending school has also mad eme realize how much I need to be there because I have been out of school a semster and just working does cut it in life. I need to go to school because the jobs I have tried to apply for to further my work career all require some type of associates degree or certificate. So school is a must there are no if and or buts about it I need a college degree.

Kimberly

At my short but very productive time at USF I've really figured out who I am and what I wanted to do with my life. I thought I knew what I wanted to do prior to attending USF but with the help of very influential and understanding teachers, I have truly found my calling; Sociology. I have had very good professors in such a short period of time that have not only taught me a great deal about the subject matter they are presenting, but a great deal about myself. I have very motivated and I find that I have more and more perserverance and an incentive to be successful each day I attend this school. I am grateful to have the opportunity to attend this school and I could not think of any school better to attend in my later undergraduate years.

Ashlee

I have grown an astonishing amount since embarking on the journey that is college. A few of the most important lessons I have learned in college include mastering both time management, and public speaking. To manage time properly is vital to been a successful, happy, well-rounded person. Time has to be allotted for personal time, while also having time to get work done and learn. During the first year of college I spent all of my time working and learning, and did not give myself any personal time to relax. I learned that this is not a healthy way of life, and I now plan ahead of schedule and manage my time properly. I also learned a lot about being comfortable public speaking. I used to be a quiet person, but in college I learned to speak up and share my point of view, and also to be able to be comfortable speaking in front of a large audience.

CHANSTON

I personally have just started college and feel it will be one of the greatest accomplishments of my life. No one in my family have graduated and I cannot wait to be the first. I am very determined and have been encouraged by my mom daily to get a degree. She worked to put herself through school and was not able to complete her degree. She said that was the biggest mistake of her life and she did not want me to do the same. My parents have told me how hard life is now without a degree and they want me to have a better life. This is my goal. I want to be a Social Studies teacher and a coach. For years I have assisted with several youth camps in sports and always find helping the kids learn new sports to be very rewarding. My parents are stuggling to pay the bills now so I know that they will not be able to help me with my dreams. I am hoping that this scholarship will help me reach my goal. I want to get a degree and make my family proud.

David

Although I currently live at home and commute to the campus, I think that USF has made me accustomed to the 'real world' is a very pleasing way. I believe that a college should not only provide a means for a better job and what many would understand as a way to earn more money, but above all else provide individuals a way to become a benefit to society. Higher grades area always the goal, but I have found that by receiving these higher grades, I have felt accomplished, not in the traditional sense, but rather in a way that allows me to feel like I will become something special and use my knowledge in an inspiring way. The feeling of liberation from the original household is undeniable, but college is the key to a career of being a profound piece to the puzzle of society.

Jamie

So far out of college I have made great friendships. Leaving from home to school was a big adjustment and it was great to find an immediate support system. On average, students are a lot more open and relaxed once you get to college. At least, that's what I've noticed about my experience. The classes are also a lot more relaxed. Since you have the opportunity to pick what classes you want, you weed out a lot of the bad apples during classes so you're left with the kids who actually want to be there and learn about the material.

Gavin

From my attendance at the Community College of Southern Nevada, I have obtained many highly beneficial skills, a high motivation towards success, and through the experiences in college, an improvement in my communications abilities. The obtaining of skills have come from the many classes I have taken. These skills would include programming skills, the ability to solve more complex mathematics problems than I ever have before, and many others. The high motivation to work hard towards success that I have obtained stems from my instructors, and many of them have informed me of their life stories and their many endeavors and achievements. Finally, the improved communications skills I obtained from the attending college came from the interaction and befriending of people from many different cultures and backgrounds. Many would say that this is usually learnt in high school, which I would agree with, but not at this degree. In college, one works with or around people whose personal characteristics vary much more greatly than those in high school, due to the lack of age restrictions utilized in colleges. These three aspects of life that I learnt while attending college will surely help me achieve future success in my life.

Being a foreigner here in this country and learning a second language is a continuous challenge. During my 2 years of college, I have learned the importance of attendance, participation, and performance in all classes. Also, going through the fire academy at my college I discovered the significance of team work, courage, integrity, and honesty. For me attending college is valuable because I get an opportunity to interact with people of many different backgrounds. Another valuable reason about being in school is getting higher education to graduate with a degree. This will increase my chance of accomplishing my goal of becoming a full time career firefighter.

Staci

I just finished my freshman year of college at the University of South Florida. Thus far my college expreience has been everything I had hoped it would be. Living on campus, in a residence hall with six other girls, has opened my eyes to how truely blessed my life has been and has betten enabled me to deal with an array of sticky situations and conflicts between people. Going into my first year of college, I was somewhat lost. I was an undeclared major who did not know what she wanted out of her college journey. However, before my first semester was complete I knew that where I belong is in the field of science and perhaps conservation of our precious environment. I realized that attending a four year university is not just about earning a piece of paper, but about discovering one's self and learning all that one can to become the best person he/she can be. Attending college is about broadening your horizens, learning about different people and cultures, discovering what it is that you stand for, and setting the foundation for who you want to be in the future.

Elviona

Out of my college experience I am getting a wonderful education. I am double majoring and minoring something I never thought I would do. I came into college thinking I was not going to do well. Now I am living by myself getting straight A's it is great. My college experience has also allowed me to meet new people that have influenced my life in a good way. It has also made me very independent. College is an experience I would never change.

Amy

Even though I have had struggles being a "non traditional" student, I still understand that receiving my BS will benefit me more in the real world than had I not chosen to come back to school.

Amye

I have gained so much from my college experience at the University of South Florida. During my undergraduate career I was able to get many research opportunities and internships that have given me the skill set that I needed to get into my first choice graduate program. I was also able to work countless hours of community service through my honor society. Volunteerism was certainly one of the greatest values that I got from USF because it taught me team work, leadership, personal responsibility, as well as integrity. My college experience at USF has become a great value to me because it provided me with the framework and knowledge to progress onto higher education that will one day allow me to work in a career that will help to serve my Tampa Bay community.

Gelmar

I have learned to be more independent, to study hard in order to learn, and to make friends in different classes. I have learned how to conduct research, write stronger essays, and to be self-motivated. This was worthwhile because I will be able to apply this to the workfield.

Mark

I have gotten many things out of my first year at the University of South Florida. I have grown as a person ue to the fact that i am living away from home and I need to depend on myself. Everything I do affects everything else around me. I have developed many friendships that will last me through my college years and beyond. Being in he dorms has allowed me to become a better person and to start the process of growing up. Life is all about learning and about choices. I have learned much about myself and my abilities. I o believe I have made the right choice in picking my school. I have learned that when I put my mind to accomplishing something, I can do it if I believe in myself. and being at school, I have learnt to believe in myself. i will carry that with my from this day forward.
