University of St Thomas-Saint Paul Top Questions

What kind of person should not attend this school?

David

Person who doesn't have the financial support.

Erin

I think there is a fit for everyone at this school!

Suzanne

A person looking for a "large college" exterience should not attend this school. The University of St. Thomas does have the "smaller school" feel to it (which I really like). It is not uncommon to see familiar faces when walking around campus. Also, the University of St. Thomas is an academic school and thus, has high expectations for your success.

Joshua

When looking for colleges, the decision is difficult to weigh. No matter where one decides to spend their time and money at, it is really hard to say what kind of person would like it here. As I roam campus, I often meet kids that are just like myself. In contrast, I also find an entire variety of other people here as well. If a person minds the cold, does not want to feel like a small fish in a big sea, and cannot afford the cost of attending college here, they probably do not belong here at St. Thomas.

Amanda

You should't attend this school if you want to be apart of a large university or state school. St.Thomas has a relatively small school feel, and class sizes are about 20-30 students, where class discussion and participation are emphasized. There are no actual sororities or fraternaties on campus either, but there are various clubs and organizations one can get involved in. There is not a lot of "city-life" at St.Thomas either, so if you are looking for that kind of an experience from a very large university I would not reccomend St.Thomas.

Jacob

A person that is unsure what they want to do in the future should not attend this school. They will spend way too much money trying out classes that they would be better off taking at a community college. Also, people that dont find friends easy will have a very difficult time finding friends and might wanna look in a different school. This school is not right for everyone but if you take a visit and it feels right, chances are you will enjoy your time here.

Zachary

Someone who likes a large university with lots of activity on the weekends.

Elizabeth

I believe that everyone fits into this school since everyone is accepted by others.

Kristyn

I think the kind of person that should go to St. Thomas is someone who wants to get out of a small town. You are in the city and that is great, but you are secluded enough that the change is not too durastic. I came from a small town and love the kind of city/ kind of secluded life.

Mitch

I really do not think that there is a particular person that should not attend this school because I feel that the University of St. Thomas is very welcoming when it comes to all kinds of students.

Mallory

I feel as though any kind of person could make their way at the University of St. Thomas. There is a very wide variety of students and a place for them here. As long as they are accepting of others, most others are accepting of them.

Daniel

Someone looking for a small, close knit group of student. Also, someone who is looking for a clase teacher-student relationship.

Joshua

An individual with a closed mind and not looking for mind thrilling opportunities should not attend the University of Saint Thomas. Those who don't want to be challenged, driven and motivated, should not pick this school. The individual needs to know they want to achieve acedemic success. Otherwise, they should go somewhere else.

Luis

A person who looks to party excessively

Ashley

Someone who wants big classes and a school with a very large amount of students. Also someone looking to get away from a high school like scene would do well choosing a different school

Allison

The environment of UST, while extrememly friendly, is a competitive one. I myself strive to be better than other students because there are several classes graded on a curve; the better I do in comparison to my fellow students, the better my grade. While I enjoy the competition, students that thrive in a more relaxed and easy-going environment should consider attending an alternative university -- there is a school for everyone, people just need to do the research.

Theres

A person who shouldn't attend this school is a person who is considered to be a slacker. Someon who doesn't care about their education shouldn't come here. They must work hard and care. And they must also be open with their professors who only want what's best for the student.

Kyra

I think that anyone and everyone should be accpeted at every school. If you are determined to receive a degree and do something great with your life then you are qualified to attend any college.

Kathryn

While choir, music, and theater are loved by many students at UST, they are definitely overshadowed in importance to the university by things like athletics and business. The student body places a huge emphasis on fitness and students are very competitive. Fitting in and having a large group of friends is very important. Also, many students go home on the weekends and the campus can feel a little quiet. The kind of person that wouldn't like this school are people whose main focus is the arts because this school just doesn't put that much focus on them.

Lisa

If you just want to blend into the crowd and do not want any attention to be given to you, then St. Thomas is probably not the best place for you.

Elizabeth

people who are very anti-theology or anti-catholic.

royce

I believe that there is no specific type of person that should not attend Chaminade. I believe that it is up the the individual themselves to attend Chaminade. I don't have the right to judge if someone should or should not attend school.

Michael

Anyone who is not self-motivated; UST offers many opportunities both in terms of practical course instruction as well as semester abroad options. However, it is incumbent upon the individual him/herself to utilize what is availed upon them. No one is going to force a student to drink the "Kool-aid" and become a scholar. One has to want to do well and strive to reach a particular set of goals on their own.

Alexandra

artists or design majors

Isaac

Thr University of St. Thomas is a fine institution in many ways including academic rigor, quality of education, and an exceptional athletic program. If I were to have a complaint, it would be the lack of community that is developed by many of the students who attend. Because of its location in St. Paul, Minnesota, many students commute home on the weekends. Consequently, their tends to be a lack of strong connections between many of the attendees.

Chris

No one.

Shelby

To attend this school you should be the type of person who is willing to be challenged and is willing to broaden their horizons in learning. It is an outstanding school with remarkable resources to help you through your four years. You need to be the type of person who is hard-working, diligent and smart. This school has many opportunities for your future so the person has to be willing to take chances.

John

A person who definitely wants to succeed. The staff here at St. Thomas is fantastic and they are willing to help everyone in any way. They even go out of their way to help students when they need it. Also if you are an athlete, there couldn't be a better time to be enrolled at St. Thomas. A new recreational center was just put up and they will be finishing a new students center soon. St. Thomas is a great place for a person who wants to grow not only in education but faith as well.

Ellen

not sure

Nyssa

I can see anyone doing fine at St. Thomas but I find that members of the LGBT community and strongly liberal students are not received very well.

Drew

Someone who should not attend St. Thomas is someone who is not willing to make an effort to branch out and meet new people. With St Thomas being a larger school than most private colleges in Minnesota you will often find yourself in a classroom where you do not know anyone. It is important to be able to be friendly and meet new people. Freshmen year will also be a big time where you need to be willing to meet new people in your dorm.

Jessica

People who don't appreciate hard work should not attend the University of St. Thomas. People who don't strive for excellence in everything they do and who aren't motivated to achieve higher than they have ever achieved before should not attend this University. St. Thomas is a place that is focused on giving each student every opportunity that there is in their desired career, and those who are to afraid to take advantage of great opportunities will not fit into the community of this school.

Nicholas

A person who is not strong academicly, anti-catholic, or intolerate of other people's beliefs, lives, etc.

Kristine

This school does not have many options for majors. Which causes many of the students that come here to transfer to a larger school. Someone that is unsure of what they would like to major in should apply to a college that has more choices. Another issue is that St. Thomas does not have a weekend life, most of the students leave for the weekend. This would not be right for someone that wanted a non-suitcase school. St. Thomas does not encourage the students to stay on campus, the food is bad, and there is nothing to do.

Portia

There are so many good options, that most people will find something they like. There isn't an art department, though, and theater majors have most of their classes at another school, so this really isn't the best choice for them.

Danielle

Very liberal students and people who are going into the arts (dance, theater, etc.). Many students here are conservative (not all, but most) and the school is known for it's business school and not arts background.

Allison

If you do not like living near a city, with a lot of events, the St. Thomas is not the school for you.

Michael

I would highly recommend attending this university. Prospective students should visit the campus and meet with a faculity advisor to make sure that this in fact is the school for them!

Jacqueline

This school is a place where you really need to reach out and make friends. Most people who go here already seem to know most other people here. So people who want a lot of diversity, this is not really your place. Another person who should not attend is one who is not good with money. This school is expensive and you must REALLY want to be here to pay the full tuition and if you need a car it is another 1000 dollars you will need to keep one on campus with you.

Everett

A person that is not used to living in a city, or who is not serious about school. St. Thomas is expensive, so a person that is not sure what they are looking for would risk wasting a lot of money for nothing.

Valerie

A person who should not attend St. Thomas is one that wants to have a large classroom size and wants to be a part of large community and have a Big 10 sports team. In high school, sometimes students can slack off and still earn a passing grade; that is not the case at St. Thomas. Also, for those who are undecided on their major might find it difficult to discover what classes to take to try and find a major since tuition is pretty high.

Nicole

I am the type of person who should not be attending this school. I am biracial (black/white), a lesbian, 32 years old, a mom of 2, broke, and non religious. I am the opposite of almost every person at this school. But yet, I love it. All the professors have Phds and truly care about thier students, no classes are taught by TAs, class size is small, the campus is beautiful, the alum give tons of money for financial aid and offer jobs to new grads. I think it is the perfect, imperfect school. I am a proud Tommie!

Alexandria

No one should attend this school that is not 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} dedicated to their studies or community. This school is not your typical college of "party all the time" school. If getting a good education , making life long friends and exploring areas you never imagined is not your interest, you need not apply. If your thought of partying and just getting by is in your plan, look somewhere else.

Lauren

Liberal, artistic individuals would feel out of place. There are students that fit that category here, but definitely not many.

Jewel

It is diffilcult to say what "kind" of person should not attend this school. I do not believe that a people should be put into specific groups or categorizes. However, I do think that there are certain personatlity characteristics that would not work well at a University. People who are lazy, and do not want to work hard should not attend UST. Students that are uncaring, unmotivated and are closed minded should not attend UST. However, I would like to say that UST is an open family and are not exclusive towards anyone.

Tiara

The type of person that should not attend this school would be somebody who is not in college for educational purposes and is simply here for just the "college experience" minus the books. This school is not for somebody who is irresponsible and will miss most class sessions where attendance is taken especially since there are very few professors who do not take attendance because the class sizes are so small.

Chris

A person that wants Theological meaning behind their school. Also a person who likes city life; St. Paul is no small town!

Ashley

If you arent into meeting new people or open minded to diverse theoligies or opinions then Liberty isn't for you.

Brandon

Anyone who strongly opposes the Catholic religion. Nearly 50 {4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of all students enrolled at St. Thomas were born and raised with Catholic in their blood. Although I do not mind the additional knowledge and am open to any religion, I have heard several complaints aimed at the extensive course requirement dedicated to religion which can be biased. If your afraid of learning a new religion than this is not the place for you.

Jacob

A person who does not take his or her education seriously should not attend the University of St. Thomas. St. Thomas is a very competitive community of students, all of whom take their education as first priority. A student who is unmotivated towards his or her education would be wasting his or her time and money at this university.
