What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Alexandria

I have learned to take risks and not be afraid to try new things. Of course I am getting a wonderful education inside the classroom, but I am also learning so many things outside of the classroom and I have met so many incredible people.

Attending a Community/City college was one of the best academic decisions I’ve ever made. I have always been the kind of person that was good at everything-and yes, at first that sounds like an amazing opportunity, but in reality being good at everything leaves you in a sea of choice and I was drowning. By attending Santa Barbara City College I was allowed to explore my talents, find new career avenues, and really was able to learn about myself. I fell in love with graphic design, and not only found something I was good at, but something I was great at! Through their Graphic Design Department I learned valuable skills that have helped me find a job and build a career. I find it a testament to my education that seasoned industry professionals have commented on how good my education was, and how surprised they were that I had such practical training that made it easy for me to almost seamlessly move from the classroom to the job site. My community/city college experience was amazing. It let me grow, explore, and shape who I wanted to become.

My college experience has been great so far. I have gone through the process of finding a school that I loved, making tons of friends there, and then deciding I needed to change my major and transfering to a new school that I love which offered what I wanted and making new friends all over again, yet still maintaining the old ones. I have joined a business club which has given me the opportunity to create many great connections with the outside business world and I have learned many great things about the industry that I want to go in to. Without this college experience, I would not have all the great friends that I have today and I would not be able to go out into the world and do what I want to do. There has been just so much value to this experience that I would never take it back for anything.

College to me is like cold water thrown on my face when i'm dead asleep. I went in believeing it would be just like high school; just going through the constant routines. My very first days of class hit as hard as a professional fighter. I was completely overwhelmed with homework, and with that i was trying to determine a major that would give me the rest of my life. All around me were decisions and responsibility; both being things i just didn't have much of in my earlier years. College will give anyone a wake up call and immediatly make them grow up. This has been extremely valuable; being a twin all my life and then separatig from that lifestyle has given me a completely new lifestyle. I am my own person with responsibilities; nothing like a kid who has to feed their new puppy; these responsibilities make me more and more amazed at what i can offer to this world; its now my generation to contribute what i have to the world; college is the stepping stone to success.

Since I have been here at St. Thomas I have seen improvement in myself in many ways. Before I wasn't practicing my faith but since I came here to St. Thomas I have learned so much more about my faith in my Theology classes and now I feel like a have a grasp on my faith. My path before I got here was not clear as to where I would be heading, but with the help of my staff I have a plan and I can see where my path is guiding me in the future. Since I've been here at UST I have made so many new friendships, but what is different is that I have made them with other ethnicities which I haven't done before and I have made some great friends that I know I will keep forever. Before I came to St. Thomas I didn't know what I was going to do so I came in and really wasn't putting all my effort into it but then one of my counelors came to me and directed me forward and I haven't looked back since. I am so thankful for UST.

College has been great. I have only been in college since September, but it is such a new experience. I moved about seven hours away from home, from the secluded country to one of the biggest cities in the Midwest. Being in the city has been amazing. It has definitely been a culture shock, and I have grown to understand and accept so many different types of people and customs. I have also gained the firsthand experience of corresponding with new people. I have learned new levels of tolerance and acceptance, and I honestly think I have become a kinder more understanding person as a result of coming to college. College has definitely been a humbling experience. You see just how different it is than high school very quickly. You learn to accept people, and how to respectfully resolve conflict, well coping with probably the most significant change in your life thus far. All in all college for me has been about change; I came here rather immature and self-centered and now I believe I have changed significantly. Slowly, I have grown toward the type of person I have aspired to become as a result of attending college.

First and foremost, I have received an education that will prepare me for the business world. The University of St. Thomas prepares its students for what they can expect upon graduation. Beyond the classroom, I have made life-long friends that I know I will stay in touch with after college. My education has been more then just getting a diploma, it has been the experience that has goes with it. The reason my college experience has been valuable, in my opinion, is that in today's world a college education is just about necessary to be considered for many jobs. I have learned not only the material that relates to the field that I am studying but the professors apply the material to real world situations. This helps students understand the importance of the course work.

Jack

To get a higher education and get a good degree.

Ellen

Met new people and experienced college

Allison

Meeting new people and being close to home in a comfortable and safe surrounding are has made me grow up and become more independent. I also have really began to have an amazing understanding of my field of study. The professors work as hard as they possibly can to make sure that the class they are teaching is worth the money I am paying and they always make themselves available for outside consultation. The University of St Thomas is a godsend :)

Erika

I have gotten alot out of my college experience so far. It's been valuable to me because I know it's an important part of life. This experience is vital for my career in the future. I know if I get a good education, I can make good decions for my life and for my family. It's a time for learning and growing at the same time.

Christen

I've heard many people claim the only thing a person cannot take away from you, is your education. Thinking about it now, I cannot help but agree. As years have progressed, I've watched the economy change. I watched it take two jobs away from my father, I've seen homeless people roam street corners in hopes of a few cents in change, and I've waited for my own life to be affected negatively as a result. However, I never reached that last point. As I sit in my university-owned apartment, sitting at a university-owned desk, staring into the screen of my own computer, I thank God that my parents both went to college. Had they not, I probably wouldn't be alive--yet I am thankful all the same. It has given me countless opportunities to grow and succeed. A college degree has become a professional necessity, setting men and women apart as they sit down for an interview. There are those who can make a comfortable living without one, yet my college experience has taught me that educating yourself even that much farther...can make a world of difference.

Nyssa

I've gained a lot of factual and personal knowledge. I've also learned how to work and interact with those who have different backgrounds and beliefs than me, a skill that is most beneficial in anything that I choose to do with my future. St. Thomas has also introduced me to many great people and helpful sources and resources for my future school work and career.

Rachel

I know that in the long college is going to be extremely valuable. The things I learn here I will be able to put for in my future education and jobs. I know that once I get my college degree life will seem so much more complete. I will understand why education is so imporant and how it truly effects the rest of your life. Now days when you don't attend college it is extremely diffcult to find a well paying job that you enjoy doing. Also the people I have met will be very valuable to me. The staff will have taught me so much as will my friends.

judith

My path to college has been different than that of many students. I took a year off after high school and moved away from home to a new city, I ultimately returned home (Seattle) and attended a community college full time for two years while maintaining fulltime employment. After finishing my community college education I took another six month off of school to save up money to finish my bachelors degree at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. During all of this time I have had to work very hard for my education, every decision I have made has been to further my education. During the last few years I have learned that if there is something I want to do and believe in fully that I can and will do everything in my power to make it happen. I think that discovering this about myself has been worth all of the challenges that attending college has thrown my way.

Jaquelyn

I have learned a lot about myself and how to interact with others. I also feel like I have developed a greater sense of what I want to do with my life as well as a greater willingness to help others I feel are in need.

Andrew

My college experience to date has provided me with many valuable life skills such as learning to communicate my ideas, learning to think critically and learning about the cultures and people of the world. However, the most important thing that I have gained from my college experience has been confidence. I am a naturally shy person and in high school I tended to be an introverted and academically average student. The smaller class sizes I encountered in college, as well as the helpful professors, allowed me to break out of my shell and envelope myself in situations which helped me to grow and become a more confident person. I also was able to learn more efficiently with the support of my college professors, which allowed me to do quite well in my classes and greatly boosted my self confidence. College has been more than just an academically valuable experience for me. I've grown so much as a person and have gained a high level of personal confidence that I take with me everywhere in my life. I wouldn't trade my college experience for anything and I can't wait to see what else it has to offer.

Sam

The most important thing I believe that I have recieved out of my college experience would have to be the variety of opportunities to learn about other cultures and the amazing opportunities I have had so far in my college career. I have been blessed to be able to learn about other cultures through the multi-cultural general required class and also through the campus of St Thomas itself. Classes such as theology and philosophy have opened my eyes to other religions and way of thinking that I have never consided before. The campus life and the opportunities to be part of a multi-cultural club such as HANA on campus has not only given be great opportunities to meet new people but also to be part of something bigger. As far as opportunities, they are endless and unforgetable. The oportunities that St Thomas can give you has been the most valuable to me, from studying abroad to learning about other cultures to meeting friends for life, my college experience has been filled with valuable experiences that I can grow on for the rest of my life.

Jason

I have been able to learn a lot, and i have gained a lot great freinds, whom i will cherish for the remainder of my life.

Mary

From my college experience, I have grown so much over such a short amount of time. I've matured in my views of others, religion, diversity, education, justice, etc. I view the world in a more positive way realizing that we all come from different backgrounds. Having this realization has made me more aware of others, not finding fault within those who's views contrast my own. I realize that in order to be successful in this world and make an impact, one must truly understand others. I have also been forced to step outside of my comfort zone and prove to not only myself, but others that I am capable of obtaining a college degree. I am the youngest of eight children and maturing was something that had to be done in order for me to truly learn from my college experiences. I am more than grateful that I have been given the opportunity to attend the University of St. Thomas. Because of my experiences thus far, I have a much more positive outlook on my future, knowing that I can make a difference in the world, whether its small or big.

Carpe Diem means "seize the day." I have learned to take everything I am taught by my eager-to-teach professors and apply it to my life with my friends, church and work. I bring education into my job as I learn new concepts in Business. I bring my education into my friendships as we discuss studies and world problem solutions. I bring education into my church as I learn the difference between blind faith and faith based on reason. My time at this School has shaped my life in the best ways. I am completely self-sufficent through a part-time job and have learned the value of a hard earned dollar. I have learned the different opportunity costs of my time spent on studying and with friends. And I have learned the meaning of a self-examined life; the peace that comes with a personal belief that is not a just a bandwagon, but rather a individual commitment to a way of life.

Drew

What I have gotten out of my college experience is that I have learned quite a bit about who I am. I was put into situations that I have never experienced and was uncomfortable with these situations. Although I was uncomfortable, the University and its professors have assissted me to make sure I succeed in those situations, even if I am initially unsure if I will be able to make it. I have learned that I can succeed and I am a stronger person than I originally believed. Through business classes, I have also learned what field interests me and what assets I bring to that area. I did not quite recognize the strengths I had and the University has greatly helped me to understand these gifts. With this understanding I have learned what I was good at and how that could translate into a career for myself. I now know that my college experience has given me the ability to focus on my strengths and apply them to my life. It has been quite valuable because it has truly helped set me up for the rest of my life.

Ian

My college experience has really put life into perspective for me. I have realized how short life really is, and how ever day is a new opportunity for change and success, because the choice is mine. My first year of college went by faster than any other academic year. It made me look back to my highschool years, and I truly realized how fast that went too. Given this, I now know that before I grasp it, I will soon be out of college and on to a new world, a world that is completely foreign to me. Will I go on to grad school? Law school? Maybe I want to become a teacher. Perhaps I will go directly into the workforce. Point is, nothing is certain during these times for me. The only thing certain is that I'm going to be out of college before I know it. It's going to come too quickly and the uncertainty behind it all makes me a little scared. Who knows. Perhaps I would have come to all of this if I hadn't come to college, but the thing is, I did, and I dont regret any of it.

Jessica

My college experience so far, although brief, has taught me a few very important things that I won't soon forget. First of all, I learned that no matter how desperately a person wants to be independent, to leave their parents, and go off and do things their own way, they will always wish for those home made dinners, morning wake up calls when the alarm didn't go off, and for someone to tell them what they should do when things start to get crazy and the world starts crashing around you. I learned that it's hard to separate from your closest friends that you grew up with, and meeting new people is scary, but new friends are a blessing. Finally, the most important thing that I have learned so far is that life isn't about getting the grade, it's about learning. It's about gaining all the knowledge you can and combining it with your talents and skills to go out and do something with your life, to attempt to make a difference in the world. College is about finding out who you are and who you want to be someday.

Abigail

From my college experience, I have learned how to be a morally responsible leader. I am involved with a variety of on-campus clubs and organization, which has strengthened my personal values and taught me how to be a role model for others. It has been valuable for me to attend the University of St. Thomas because it is a place where I can succeed and I am confident that it will prepare me for the working world after I graduate. I have learned how to think critically in my Elementary Education classes, which is an important characteristic to have in order to be an outstanding teacher (which is one of my career goals). My time so far at the University of St. Thomas has shaped me into the person I am now.

Ruth

More than being challenged academically, I have been challenged as a person. I have been forced to admit my flaws, and I have been inspired to work to improve. Along the way I have had help from genuine friends and helpful professors. I feel I have grown in ways that I would not have without attending college. St. Thomas in particular is big enough that I got to experience life on my own, but small enough that I felt the peole around me really cared about my success.

Zachary

My college experience has been great so far. This immersion into a campus that you have been on only a handful of time before you come for move-in day, is a great overall experience. It really makes you step out of your box and discover who you really are and what you want to do with your life. College is not only a good academic challenge, especially for those who were not challenged in high school, but also a social challenge as well. All students must learn to leave behind what they had in high school and discover who they are in a new environment. This is really valuable to all people. These skills of meeting and working with people will help you with whatever you plan to do after your college days are over. Overall my experience here at college has been a great one, and I would recommend that everyone go to college. I say this not only becuase it will allow you to advance in your career field, but also because of the social lessons you will learn!

Taryn

What I have gotten out of my college experience is that I can actually succeed. High school was tough for me and being in college helped me realise that I can actually do anything that I really set my mind to. It has also taught me responsibility and has allowed me to take pride in being an adult and knowing that I am responsible for my future and knowing that I passed my class because I put in the hard work and dedication I needed to succeed. It has been very valuable for me to attend because I know that I can get my Nursing degree and provide a better life for me and my future kids so that we dont have to struggle to pay the bills and all they can worry about is being kids.

kelcy

My experience has allowed me the enlightenment of diversity and acceptance of knowing that there are many things that I may never know the answer to and therefore there will always be something more for me to learn. The desire to learn which easily can be equated with the desire to suceed or further ones' self is probably one of the most motivating factors common to the human experience. It is also a matter of give and take in as much as being a student also makes one a teacher and the best teachers are themselves students and capable of learning from their students. My ultimate goal is to be a master teacher in which it would be requisite to be well versed in many aspects of life not only physically yet mentally and conceptually as well. It stokes my thirst for knowledge to know that there is so much out there for me to learn and hopefully so many out there to learn from me as well as I from them.

Nicholas

Through my education here at the University of St Thomas, I have grown in understanding of what the Catholic Church and Faith are. I have learned why philosophy is so critically important to change our world for the better. The Catholic Studies program has aided me to grow in my relationship with God, to understand Him better, and to understand His creation more thoroughly.

Elizabeth

I've been in college since junior year in high school for PSEO, and I've learned a lot. I learn that being in college requires you to be a responsible person. You have to do your readings and assignments, and if you have any questions you have to be assertive and approach the professor. College has taught me to also be responsible financially, not just academically. You have to learn how to balance and budget your money, whether it’s for school or for your personal life. This means filling out your FAFSA on time and buying your books. Not only do you learn to be responsible, but you also learn time management. Learning time management is probably the most important thing I learned from going to college. It benefits you when you’re in school and when you’ve finished school. Time management is being able to effectively manage your time productively. For me that is managing school work load, part time job and a family. It has been valuable to attend college because you gain knowledge, it becomes beneficial in the future and you become a better listener. You should be a professional listener when you graduate.

Dru

As of now, I have learned that education is the key to getting a solid job upon graduation. Also, out of my expirience thus far, I have gotten to know a lot of great people who share my passion to learn and to do well in school. It has been valuable to attend this college because it sets all students up for jobs prior to graduation and it also is a college that will get you ready for the real world, whether that is learning to work with people, becoming an expert in a particular job field, etc.

Severina

What I've gotten out of my experience in college is to grow up more, take responsibility and it has been a very life changing and valuable to attend.

Victoria

I have gotten knowledge I will use on the job. Knowledge that will prepare me for my future career. The tuition may be high but the professors are very knowledgable in their field and wish to spread that knowledge to their students. Professors want to see their students get great jobs after they graduate, and encourage them to contact them after graduation to update them on how they're doing.

Dillon

I have gained not only factual knowledge and skills, but also the ability to discover for myself. The professors teach us not only what to learn, but how to learn and allow us to help in the teaching proccess.

Allison

So far, I have gained a lot of knowledge on what it is to be a college student. I have learned a lot about myself, and how independent I can be. I feel that college has helped me become more responsible for my studies, and I am constantly competing with my classmates. The competition is healthy, and I feel that it is valuable to be challenged constantly.

Teresa

I have gotten a lifetime of valuable skills and knowledge that I believe will help me as I continue down the path toward a profession. I have also made life long friendships and have come to better understand myself--my faith, my values, and where I want to go in life. The support I receive at St Thomas from my teammates, peers, professors, and administrators is immense and incredibly helpful and encouraging as i try to reach my goals--I would not trade it for anything.

Peg

As a 'mature' student, I was pleasantly surprised by the welcome I received from all ages of students and instructors. I attended COD, taking three semesters of Writer's Colony where original works were read and critiqued by the professor as well as fellow students. College after high school was not something I could swing back then, but I'm determined to achieve a degree, even at this late date. I was double blessed that I could attend school with my 21 year old son who is doing some basic courses before identifying and choosing a permanent study course. I would love to think that we may be able to attend another learning facility together. Now that the hurdle of returning to school is behind me, I am hoping to enroll at a university for further study in Liberal Arts and espeically in writing. Regardless of your age or situation, I believe school is the greaterst gift to bestow on yourself, whether earning your first degree or moving onto graduate and master course studies, or even jusat following subjects of interest. The challenge from educators and the competition to excel gets your blood miving and your brain cells firing.

Kristine

College had not started for me until my sophomore year, I finally have a direction with my life. My freshman year hardly seemed like a change from highschool. Despite the fact that I was away from home, the easiness of the class, drama between friends and of course the terrible cafeteria food was all there. It was difficult to make friends at first, these new people are being thrown at you and instantly you are supposed to love and trust them as if you had all along. It seemed like i was watching everyone around me have the typical college experience, while I just did nothing. Classes were fine and yet nothing really sparked my interest, I never had the drive that other people had towards their major classes. Throughout all the relationships and classes, I have learned that this pressure that this is just a stepping stone. Barely anything to really dwell over, it is important to pick the path to a career. Many people think its the end of the world if you pick the wrong major. The truth is information can never be bad, the more we know the better we will be.

Portia

I have gained a lot from my college experience. College really teaches you to take responsibility and become more independent. You no longer have parents making sure you go to class, and many teachers do not take attendance, so it is really up to you. It's also an important time because I had to decide what I wanted to do with my life. Making new friends and meeting so many different people is another valuable aspect to me. I came from a small town where everybody knew everybody, so college was really different. It helped me learn to put myself out there and try new things. College is such an important time in one's life, there are so many changes that you have to take advantage of. Attending college is so valuable to me for all of these reasons.

Danielle

St. Thomas is a great school for me because of the business school. I'm going into the marketing field and it is hard to find a school that has the awesome and smart business professors that UST has. The alumni network here is great as well. They have Tommie pride and help graduates of St. Thomas find a job after college. The amount of knowledge I have gained at UST about the business world is invaluable.

Josh

I have grown so much as a person thanks to my time at UST. As I mentioned before, the people at St. Thomas are absolutely outstanding, and are so focused on helping students become better people. Careers are great, and there is plenty of focus on landing the right job (and ideally a high-paying one), but there is a large emphasis on developing as a well-rounded, social individual who can help others and give back to our shared world. I am so thankful for that emphasis and I know that St. Thomas has prepared me for life, not just the job-market.

Amber

I have really grown as both a student and a person throughout my college experience so far. I have only been at the University of St. Thomas for a semester now, but I have already gained so much knowledge and responsibility. This was a great thing to learn so early on because I feel much more prepared for adulthood when I graduate in three and a half years. The professors are amazing and help with anything you don't understand or just need clarification on. The work load has been a bit crazy, but that's due to my major. That is what has helped me the most - my workload. I have learned to manage my time better and I have realized that some things are much more important than just going on Facebook or watching television. This semester has been full of knowledge, both academically and personally.

Jordan

My college experience has been wonderful so far, and as I see it, it is the stepping stone to one day being able to be a dentist. The types of volunteer work that the school sets up for students is great! Unlike almost all other students, I have decided to stay away from alcohol and partying every weekend. I truly understand that this does not fit my life goal of one day becoming a dentist. I really have to put in the time and work. But in the end I know that if it is meant to be, it will come true.

Allison

Going to college, although expensive, was one of the best decisions of my life so far. College has taught me how to be independent and make decisions for myself. I can decide what is best for me, regardless of what my friends think is best. I found out about myself and what kind of person I am. I have learned to perservere and never give up, even on the toughest problems. I've learned more than I thought I could, both academically and socially, and have made lifelong friends.

Michael

My college expereince has left me with many great memories. A very high quliaty education, and the tools and skills that will help prepare me for the upcomming stages of life.

Andrew

I have gotten a sense of worth in my life. I am beginning to understand the rewards of hard work. While it's not easy by any stretch of teh imagination it is worth it in the long run to attain the ultimate goal of happiness. If you have the opportunity and the skill set to attend college I say do it. Not just for the fun that the other students bring to the campus but to become a better version of yourself a better man or woman.

Urte

Before I attened St. Thomas, I was a homebody. I didn't go out, afraid to make a fool of myself. I was worried that college would be hard. But I decided to do everything possible to step out of my comfort zone. I went on a retreat in the first month, and for my first spring break I went on a nine day trip to Washington DC with STLF (Students Today Leaders Forever). It has helped me be more outgoing and believe in myself more. St. Thomas has been very valuable to me. I can't imagine going somewhere like the University of Minnesota where I would disappear into the croud. With St. Thomas I get to make a name for myself by being in every on-campus group I wish to be in. I have made life-long friends and the campus feels like home. I wouldn't go anywhere else.

Christina

Ifeel like I've grown as a person, I'm more confident and outgoing. I've met so many new and fun people that have has a great impact on me. The best part of it all, is I'm working my way through school to follow my dream of being a veterinairan.

Joshua

My college experience has given me a broader understanding of the world and of myself. It has been valuable to attend this school because it has given me a greater interest in my intended field, it has allowed me to meet great friends that have made me a better person, and I have learned to work hard to achieve my goals.
