University of the Pacific Top Questions

What kind of person should not attend this school?

Vaughn

The University of the Pacific maintains a very high teacher to student ratio that can often result in individualized attention. Students who want to experience full lecture halls, classes with several hundred students, and a massive campus requiring public transportation should not consider Pacific. While Pacific does frequently have a competitive athletics program competing in NCAA Division 1 athletics, they no longer have a football team. If Saturday morning tailgates and games are your idea of an ideal college experience, Pacific may not be for you.

People who do not like feeling isolated or like there are not many people around probably would not like this school. Quad dorm living can be kind of lonely because most people close their doors while in their rooms. Also, overall, the student body is the same size as the high school I went to- three to four thousand. Most people do not stick around on the weekends either.

At Pacific it is required to take a seminar class titled "What is a Good Society." After taking this course, I realize that the small campus and friendly staff harness a positive energy that help students succeed. A student that is unwilling to open their mind to bettering even the smallest communities should not attend University of the Pacific although I'm sure if they did, Pacific would change them for the better.

The people who should not attend University of the Pacific are the people who are not dedicated. Dedication to any passion is a very good characteristic to have within one self. To be dedicated, the person can go anywhere in their lives by working hard and seeing the paths that are ahead of them. By seeing these paths and predicting the consequences of issues that are sure to obstruct the path then the dedicated person can work harder to overcome the issue and reach their goal more efficiently.

People who are unmotivated and not willing to contribute any effort or participation in class. The classes at this school are very discussion-oriented, thus student participation is key and if a student does not pay attention in class or have any thoughtful answers to further the discussion then that student will probably feel very out of place at this school.

If one doesn't have the motivation to push themselves to their breaking point, then this school isn't for that person. It is highly competitive and requires a great amount of concentration and particular ways of thinking. I person not interested in health careers or engineering shouldn't go here since this school doesn't place emphasis on anything outside of those areas. A person who never experienced an Advanced Placement course should not attend because they have no experience in pulling all-nighters, grasping abstract concepts, or intellectually pushing themselves.

Kayla

Anyone who does not like small, close-knit campus communities should not go to Pacific. This campus is definitely not like most UC or State school campuses in that you absolutely have to have a bike to get to class. Those who want the full typical college experience of a very large campus and thousands of students everywhere should not go to Pacific.

Some people love a high-energy town or plenty of city-style activities. This is not the place for these people. Stockton is not the best area for shopping, nightlife or entertainment. Also, the administration has currently taken a very restrictive stance on student activities, sometimes resulting in students making decisions that could do further damage than necessary. They are not taking a holistic approach to meeting their students' needs and encouraging development of healthy, whole, participating citizens. If this is what you are looking for, this is not the place for you.
