University of Tulsa Top Questions

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Marcus

As I am a transfer student for the 2015 spring semester, I cannot accurately speak to The University of Tulsa specifically. However, I have accumulated almost 150 credit hours from other accredited institutions and analyze the college experience as a whole. The most governing mantra for me remains: "Get over yourself." The application of this phrase avoids several unfortunate collegiate experiences including irresponsible drinking, arriving late or missing class entirely, forgetting assignments, or uttering the wrong phrase at the wrong time to professors - simply out of naiveté. Respecting others and eliminating selfishness provides the most successful and rewarding college experience.

I wish I had known more about the history of the school and the additional opportunities it offered by way of extra-curricular activities.

Megan

I wish I would have known more about time management, how to study efficiently, and outside scholarships.

There is alot of focus on On-campus students it feels like. Commuters can feel lonely or left out of alot of the activity and college experience. But there are commuter groups to get involved in and your college experience is mainly up to you. You should find a friend on campus that you can crash with every now and then so that you can get your feel of on campus life and the college experience, but don't be disheartened by anything. You're saving money to live off campus after all!

I wish I would have known how to really study. My high school didn't prepare me at all for the hours I've spent in my books. I've had to learn, and quickly, from friends who had better study habits in high school.

Laymon

I wish I would have had a complete outline of the courses necessary to my degree, and when they would be available. With that I could've suffieciently planned out my entire bachelor's degree.

Steven

Before I had arrived at the University of Tulsa, I wish I would have known how many more opportunities the unversity had to offer. Their are so many campus organizations to choose from and get involved in, I was overwhelmed as newly arrived freshman.

I wish I had known coming out of high school that success only comes from hard work. I wish I had known that working hard academically in your late teens and early twenties would pay off exponentially later in life. Most of all, I wish I had known that a life lived without challenging oneself is a life that has not lived up to its full potential.

Elizabeth

Before I entered the University of Tulsa, I wish I would have known the difficulties of paying tuition.

Being a transfer student, I wish I had known the requirements for my major sooner. Because I did not know which class I have to take to get my degree, I ended up taking classes I did not need for my major. I could have saved myself a year from taking unneeded classes. Also, I wish I had known that certain classes are only offered in certain semesters; I could have prepared better before coming to TU.

Nate

I wish I had known that not all the credit you earned in high school will count towards your major depending on what major you choose. Also, I would have wanted to know to take as many different courses as you can in high school. That's not to say that you cannot once you reach this university, just that it might help you narrow down what you want to do as there is a lot to choose from.

I really had no idea that TU had one of the best Petroleum Engineering Departments in the U.S.. In 2007 we were ranked 3rd in the nation. I wish someone had told me how promising a career in the Petroleum Industry could be when i was a senior in high school. Something else I wish I had taken advantage of was the amount of scholarships available. TU is a private school but it does not cost anymore than any other out-of-state college. There were lots of scholarships available that no one took the time to show me.

Megan

I wish that I had known to sign up for the smallest meal plan. I almost never ate in the cafeteria my freshman year because I did not like the meals offered. Most of my meals were eaten at home or at local fast food restraunts. I could have saved a lot of money by purchasing a smaller meal plan or no meal plan at all.

Megan

I wish that i would have known that to suceed, you must be motivated to reach your goals. No one will hand you a prize for doing nothing, you must get out there and give 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} and to put as much effort forward as possible.
