Greek life is cool. Full of different people. Try it if it's something you're interested in. First year they kind o have a monopoly on parties since you don't really know anyone and those are usually open and consistent. I personally an not into Greek life but if you think it is for you try it. Just know that there are other things to do around campus and it is not everything.

About a 1/3 of the student body is involved in Greek life, and they're definitely like a family. Rushing sucks for the girls, but pledging rocks and its vice-versa for the guys. Girls simply girl flirt and have to impress at first, but once they're in, they're showered with gifts. Guys, on the other hand, get to go to all these fun events like barbecues or night clubs, but pledging usually involves hazing. When we had our snow day, my friend had to wake up at 7 am and shovel his frat's driveway. The justification for this torture is that they'll get to impose it on the pledges next year. It's a weird cycle haha.

The Greek scene is very prominent at UVa, but it is not overwhelming if that isn't the kind of environment or activity that you desire to take part in. I don't take part in Greek life, besides attending a party here and there with my best friend (who is in a sorority). My three best girlfriends are all in the same sorority and it is clear that they would like for me to join, but they are really supportive and completely okay with it when I say that it's not my cup of tea, so to speak, and they don't push me about it. Also, even if you aren't interested in the Greek life, just being on Grounds during rush week is fun simply to watch everyone and see what it's like without having to be in the midst of the insanity. There are also different types of fraternities and sororities, such as social, service, and business. Also, if you choose to join a fraternity or sorority, you can participate in their activities as much or as little as you desire.
