Just to consider all the aspects and make sure to make a list of what you're looking for. Find the college that best suits your personality and your interests. Don't be afraid of going too far away from home, because it's good to be on your own and experience the real world and what it's going to be like. As for making the most of college, all I can say is "GET INVOLVED!" Join clubs and sports and anything you can. You need to be open to new experiences and new ways of thinking and especially new people. And as much fun as it might be not to do homework and go to class, it's very important to do those things. Succeeding in school is finding the balance between academics and your social life. Study hard, have fun and enjoy the experience because once it's over it's over.
