What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Nancy

I am in my second year of college and have accomplished alot since graduating high school, however, there are some things I wish I had done as a senior. As a high school senior, I would have definitely taken advanced placement courses to better prepare myself for college. In my first semester of college, I struggled a little in writing essays in English Composition. I overcame that obstacle in speaking to my professor on how to improve my concept of writing and successfully completed the class. Another advice I wish I had given myself is saving money. During my senior year I consistently spent money on senior activities including prom without thinking twice. Saving money is one advice I should have taken into consideration and now all I can afford for gas is ten dollars a week. I am an ambitious student and I can get through hard economic times in pursuing my education. This wonderful scholarship will help me greatly in completing my bachelor's degree.

Lindsay

I would advise myself to look into what was available as far as schlorships and decided what i was going to take once i entered college. In doing that i would not waste any time and and would not have to worry about how i was going to pay for classes.

Mary

Mary, this is a pivotal moment in your life. There is no turning back. Every decision you make will affect the rest of your life, so choose wisely. Choose wisely what career path you wish to take, what schools you wish to attend, and even who your friends will be. Whatever you choose, don't do it for the money. Follow your heart, do what you're passionate about and success will follow. Don't ever be too proud to take advise from those who have been in your shoes, and remember, a dream without a plan is just that- a dream. But don't stop dreaming. Just remember to wake up, and make it happen.

Crystal

Crystal, I would like to point out certain essential points you should know before entering college. Be sure to take precautions in regards to who you decide to befriend. Even though college is designed to provide an education for students, many individuals seek to engage in activities that may not be so studious. Remember, ?tell me who your friends are, and I'll tell you who you are.? Also, you are now an adult and, therefore, should act and think as one. The decisions you make will mold and sculpt your future, so by no means allow yourself to be your own worst enemy. This is your chance to excel in your studies, challenge your mind, develop new interests, and make all of your most desired aspirations tangible and within reach. Be steadfast in your pursuit towards your goals because if you won't step up to the plate, someone else surely will. Life is a dog-eat-dog world and if you are not fighting against the tide, you are destined to crash with the current. Even when you may feel overwhelmed with work, know that you are battling for the most beautiful cause: your education, your future life.

Ruth

I would tell myself to put the television and friends aside because what you do here will effect your future drastically. I would stress to myself that studying is a key factor for success and it wouldnt hurt to join a club or two or maybe even do volunteer work because it will pay off for good scholarships. I would also tell myself that the SAT and ACT do count as a big part to earning scholarships. I took the SAT & ACT but did not pass and I missed out on Bright Futures and that was something I could have avoided. Lastly I would tell myself to take the opportunity I have in front of me and take college courses while in high school. This one of the main things I regret not taking college classes while in high school. I would also add that the school pays for those classes while your in high school and in the end it will benefit you on completeing your degree early.

Jennifer

First of all, I would tell myself to focus, focus, focus. As a high school senior, I was more concerned with getting out of high school than continuing my education in college. I, as most high school seniors do, became lazy and unmotivated. Being in college has helped me straighten out my priorities, discover a major, and mature to a more self-motivated, dedicated student. Second, I would have told my self to not procrastinate when it came to applying for scholarships. My first year of college, I worked full-time and was a part-time student. In the beginning of the spring semester of 2009, I quit my job and became a full-time student. I regret not doing that from day one. I believe that if I was receiving money from scholarships, I would have been able to focus on school earlier in my college career, and ultimately, graduate college sooner. Lastly, I would tell my high school senior self to get more involved in college. I would advise myself to join a few clubs at college. I think developing teamwork and leadership skills is important.

Fabiola

Go out and do more extracurricular activities

KATAYA

I would tell my self to take my high school classes more seriously, because that is going to follow you for the rest of your life. I would also mention that the years go by fast so buckle down now and you can have all the fun you want later.

Bradley

If I was given the chance to go back in time and talk to myself when I was a high school senior, there would be several things that I would have to say. The first thing that I would say is "don't be so scared". Throughout high school, I always felt that teachers were trying to make college look like the boogeyman. When I actually did get to college, I realized that it was really not so different from high school. Besides the fact that professors appear to care less about their students' success and there are more mature people around, college is just about as "scary" as high school as. I would also tell my high school senior self that college really will allow me to explore myself and what I want out of my future. I always felt that teachers in high school had to say this to make college sound like a "cool" experience, but in reality it was true. College has allowed me to learn more about what I want out of life and it has also led me to the career choice that I plan to pursue.

Bryan

Focus in my education & graduate.

Ashley

If I could go back to my senior year in high school and give myself advice knowing what I know now the main thing I would tell myself is that you have to read the book. All through school I never really had to read the textbook and I always still did very well. However in college you need the book, there is a lot of information that comes from the books that are very important. Also you are going to need more time to do homework then yoou did in highschool so make sure to make a little more time in your schedule. Another thing keep a calender with you at all times. When a teacher tells you when something is due you can just take out your calender and have all of your due dates in one place. It will help, I promise!

Jessica

I don't think I would give myself any different advice. Everything happens for a reason and I am extremely excited about my business venture. I have changed my major a couple different times. I can't see myself doing anything else, especially if it isn't business related. The wakeboarding camp I will be opening will be such an amazing experience and it's exactly what I was put on this earth to do. Helping people (especially kids) learn how to do an extreme sport and have fun is the best feeling in the world. The smile they give you when they finally get it and understand what they're supposed to do, and then they do it, well it's priceless. It's going to be a lot of work, but it will all be worth it. Going to work in a bathing suit, board shorts, and teaching people that want to learn and be there is the best job that I can think of. And it won't be a "job." When your passion is your work (wakeboarding and teaching), it's what you do, you love it, and doesn't feel like work.

Kristine

If I could go back and talk to myself as a high school senior I would say, "Kristine, first go to a Community College, then look into a private university. Because, honestly general education is exactly that, a general education". I was a very good High School Student, I received my honors roll all four years, I attended every single class session, and I completed all my homework. I was so happy when I received my acceptance letter to Embry Riddle, because I thought I knew what I wanted. Also, the price of the college really didnt sink into my tiny little unexperienced brain. I recieved many scholarships, but even so, I still had to take out thousands of dollars in loans. I would of loved to stay at Embry Riddle but the fact that I had to keep taking out loans was just too much of a deterent for me. So, with that said, I would of told myself to go to a Community College or even a Public College. However, because I didnt think of the cost factor I am now at Valencia Community college and probably will be graduating from college in 2013 instead of 2012. *Sigh*

If I could go back and talk to myself as a high school senior it would be great. I would tell myself to try my hardest during my final year of High school so that I can get into a great college and be on track with the other students as well. I would also tell myself to ask for help more often when I dont understand a portion of the material in order to help me improve for the future.

Laura

If i could go back in time and talk to myself three years ago i would first say, don't procrastinate! Get your homework done on time and do not wait until the last minute to start it! The first year of college you may want to put partying in front of studying or doing homework, but every class matters, and you should try your hardest. College years are the best time of your life and you need to have good grades to get where you want in life! If you ever need help with school or need advice, there are advisors, conselors and special centers there to help you. Never be afraid to ask for help, and be sure to make good use of the library. Most importantly have fun, be safe and study hard.

Christy

The one thing I would have done differently as a high school senior is applying for more scholorships. I did not apply for any because I had bright futures, but what I was ablivious to was the fact I had to buy my books and when I continue to a university I will has to pay 25{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of my schooling. Now I am having to work and trying to keep up with my bill while trying to keep up with school as well. If I would have worked harder and applied for scholarships I would not have to work so much and would be able to focus one-hundred percent on school.

leonela

Study harder, focus make the right choices early on. Make sure you choose the university that fits you in every way.

Sarah

If given the option to turn back the clocks of time I wish I would have known one major thing. I wish I would have known that it is okay to not know what exactly you want to be when you "grow up." I thought that once the choice was made that was it. End of story. The end. But that is not true, especially if attending a community college before entering a 4 year university. I began my journey by attending Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., for I wanted to study International Relations and Affairs. But when a loved one experienced a rare medical condition in the brain, my attention drew to the medical field. I have always been interested by medicine, but thought it was not for me until that turn of events. To make a long story short, going to a community college has allowed me not only to get aquainted with the Biological Medical profession but also to save some money.

Adeline

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would advised myself to don't get discourage when things are bad or when I don't make the score I wanted to on a test.

Ruha

Because now I know that financing college expenses is so critical, I would have worked harder in my classes, applied for multiple scholarships, and saved up money for pay for future college costs. I would have estimated my college expenses and figured out how I would pay for college. At this point I am having many financial conflicts, and it is hard to pay for college. I would have carefully eliminated schools that do not meet my expectations and needs. As a high school senior, I would also brainstorm what classes I might want to take. Also because college life is very busy, I would have worked on my time management skills in order to be smart when using time. As a high school senior and upcoming freshman, I would also consider getting involved in campus, as campus involvment is critical as well.

Sierra

Sierra, I know you don't want to go to college. I can assure you that you will not be accepted into the military so study hard and take the college placement exams that are offered to you. You are very intelligent and you know that, but you never push yourself to succeed and it's time to grow up and do that. I know it's hard to believe that you cannot join the military since it's all you've ever wanted, but you will find new ways to be yourself in college and it is an amazing experience. Don't focus so much on growing up so soon, instead be yourself, enjoy life, and work hard at school. You should also take some A.P. courses because you know you can pass them and it will help with college later on. The last thing I will tell you is to complete your spanish classes and start college right after high school ends. Good luck and remember to keep your head up!

Fabiola

I would make as many new friends as I can and get in more exta-curricular activities!

David

If I had to go back and give advice to myself about transitioning from High School to College, I would tell myself to just relax. Many people see this transition and life defining, in which it is, but they often times get very stressed and end up making mistakes or trying to grow up too fast. The point is that it is a gradual transition, not an overnight ordeal. It takes many weeks and months and even years to become mature enough to take care of yourself. I would tell myself that it's ok to let go of things as well. Life is about change and learning how to cope with it, so I would tell myself to just be clear and calm with decision making. I definitely do not regret anything in the past about my transistion, but being more calm about it would have made it so much easier and enjoyable.

Andrea

Well I would tell myself what is it that I want to do for the rest of my life which is nursing. I would have joined the CNA program so I would have a better feeling about the field. I would have advice myself to do dual-enrollment and get an early start. I would apply to more scholarships and done better research about schools. I would have told myself how college is not easy, but is also not impossible and that anyone who really wants to can get through it. I also would tell myself to enjoy it, college is a new stage that some people experience and is very rewarding. Is not only about getting your education, but also about growing as a person. There are so much good things you are going to learn about your proffesion and other subject that you might had not interested in, or knowlegable about. There are so much things out there, so much people. places, cultures, history is just amaizing. I would tell myself that is great to know what you want, but not forget to enjoy every step, because it is does little things that make college, college.

Evelin

If i could go back in time and give myself advice it would be to be prepared. No matter for what, whether it be for tests or for balancing your life, be prepared. Not everyone is going to be on your side so you have to make sure that you are on your own side by having things organized, making sure you have your p's and q's in line to be able to go into class, or even really life in general knowing that you have done everything to prepare yourself for things expected and unexpected. Being prepared is one of the only ways you can try to control an uncontrollable situation, which you will be facing many of, in college.

caden

i would of given myself advise like getting my a.c.t. done in high school and would of filled out my application for colleges sooner, so i could of went away and gotten into a good school.

Jehan

I would say that I need to have a career plan to know what major I am going for college. I also need an educational plan to know which classes I am going to take that would apply to my major. I need to have time management to balance my time at home at school and at work. So, I would accomplish my daily tasks as a role of a student, a family member, and an employee. I would also set a time goal for a short and a long term goal, which are my plans for college. In which, when and what year would I be able to graduate from college. Am I going to be a full-time student or a part-time student? I am going to ask myself this question to be a great student and to graduate early in college. This is how I would do it. I need self-determination and self-reliance to achieve my goals and accomplices in life by attaining my highest education which is getting a "Master's Degree" in college. And this will motivate me to have a successful and better life.

Monica

If I could go back in time, I would tell myself to prepare better for college by taking college prep courses and applying for scholarships as it would have saved me a lot of time and helped my financially. I would also let myself know that college is a process and one should never give up!

Mandy

Work hard, don't give up. Things are different that in highschool. You need to make sure you apply yourself and don't quit!

Brittney

Looking back now I would definately give myself more advice on study tips and time management. I work full time and take night classes all week, and it is hard trying to manage everything together. Managing when to study, knowing when things are due for certain classes and making sure you get it done on time is very important and sometimes it get really hard to keep up with it all. If you dont study your grades suffer and then you could wind up paying for the same class over again, not something that most people want to do, so if you prepare yourself with better study habbits, and manage your time between classes, and the amount of time you study for each class, you are going to be better off in the long run.

Ruth

If I could go back in time in my high school senior year I would probably get to know more about american government . Because I was always focused on my math and science classes, I never really pay attention to what is going on in the country and I feel like I dont know anything about government. I used to think in High school just because my major is engineering it was not important for me to gain knowledge in political sciences. Now that I am in college I try to read and inform myself about government.

Camika

If I could go back in time to when I was a high school student I would tell myself to pay attention to my studies more. The reason I say this is because I played in high school and that affected my GPA. But Valencia being the great school it is gives a second chance. No matter what you are allowed to attend this school and take prep classes and that is what I like because I got to build up my GPA. I now have a 3.33 GPA I am so proud of that and wish I could have done this before when I was in highschool. Bigger universities don't even look at your application when your gpa is low and Valencia gives you a chance to bring yours up.
