I started attending Ventura College in the Fall of 2023, right after I graduated high school. I have lived in Ventura my entire life and as such, have been surrounded by the campus culture for as long as I can remember. Honestly, attending Ventura College, as opposed to going straight to a 4 year university, was one of my best decisions ever. Not only do I not have to pay tuition my first two years thanks to the VC Promise, but I also get to finish all my general education, save money, and prepare to transfer to a University in the Fall of 2025 (the transfer rates are higher than the initial acceptance rates for schools in my area). I finished my first semester with a 4.0, was able to hold down two jobs, and got to live with family, decreasing the stress of finding housing. If you're not from Ventura, or cant find other housing, the college also offers online classes, and I have done a few of them, and even had classmates located as far as Arizona. We have international students, student jobs, discounts, and an accessible campus. I even changed my major within my first semester there, something that couldve been a problem at other places. I highly recommend attending Ventura College, or if you cant come here, go to your local community college. Although its not as glamorous, or impressive, its better for me in the long run, and it might be better for you too.

Ventura College has overall given me a great experience where I was able to reorient my educational goals due to the easy accessibility of most of the teachers and especially resource centers. Their library was my haven where I would quietly spend up to 8 hours studying with access to so many useful books with a staff that really wanted to help. One of the biggest helps to me was the free tutoring center where my first years of college were spent asking questions all day to help me pass my college-level math courses with an A. For the most part, the majority of professors at the campus really do care and are there to help when you need it, just don't be afraid to ask. Overall the college is one of the best community college experiences I could have asked for and am very grateful to have made so many good connections with the faculty.

It is a very good school. There are a lot of opportunities for those who need help in gaining the correct education. The only thing that I did not enjoy was the miscommunication between the counselors and students for their education plan, because of this, I'd stick to one counselor.

Ventura College is a diverse and wonderful college. It's a few minutes' drive from the beach and has plenty of locations that are nearby. The library is personally my favorite part of the college. From the time I've been there, it's a lovely campus and has wonderful professors.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Don't ever settle for what someone else wants you to do with your life, or for what other people consider to be a smart career decision. While it is important to consider what you will do as a career, and to make sure it's a way to make a living, it is even more important to ensure that you choose a path that will make you feel proud of yourself, and happy. Sometimes, what you choose to do may not be logical or make sense to other people, but in the end, it's your education, your career, and your life. If you spend it worrying about what other people think, and doing what other people want you to do, that's when you have become truly lost. So never lose your way. Your first instinct is right...go for it!

  5. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish that I would have known that getting books ahead of time is a good thing. Another thing would be to do my FAFSA ahead of time and not at the last minute. Another would be to not be so shy and quiet whil talking to other people. And finally I would tell myself to not procrastinate and get any and all of the classwork done so that it won't come back to haunt me.

  6. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The only thing that I dislike about Ventura College is the lack of courses available in certain areas of study. I wish that more Journalism and Film classes were offered at the my school, but unfortunatley, many of the classes I found most intriguing upon registering are only offered at Ventura College's Moorpark branch, which is too far of a commute for me. Nevertheless, as I stated before, the campus I attend now has allowed me to enroll in other appealing subjects, taught by prodigious teachers who have helped spark an interest and an open mind to other fields.

it was finals prep week and I was in the library in a study room with my friend. we were studying doing our work when the library staff came and told us that the school was being evacuated due to the Thomas Fires. As I walked out of the study room I could smell the smoke inside the library, thus why the whole campus was being evacuated. I was scared that maybe we weren't able to have a prep week, and that was exactly what had happened.
