Villanova University Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Sarah

Many students at Villanova come from well-off families, mainly from the Philadelphia area, Long Island, and New Jersey. There is a wide variety of what students wear to class. Some come in dresses or nice clothes every day, while others dress in sweatpants and sweatshirts. However, you will always find most students wearing any type of clothing representing Villanova.

Christina

People at Villanova are generally really nice and accepting. They are also thoughtful and do random acts of kindness like holding the door open. People are very involved and there is a strong sense of community.

Matt

Its pretty accepting here. Theres plenty of things to do for almost anyone. Some of the stereotypes are true regarding the limited demographic. Most of the population is white. Many come from Pa, NY, NJ, CT...the northeast.

Brittany

Socio-economic status can come into play on the universe. Many students do admit feeling forced to spend money. For girls- rainboots, uggs, and north faces are a must. Girls either sport juicy sweats and uggs or heels and a dress- no t-shirts and jeans here. For guys its simple, pants and a shirt.

Alex

No student would feel out of place at VU, we're accepting of everyone. People generally get semi-dressed up for class, something preppy or a sweatshirt and jeans is pretty standard. I have groups of friends from so many different arenas. Most students are from New York New Jersey and Penn. A few from more north, a few from the Maryland area and a medium size group for California. Predominately right wing.

Shannon

Most Villanova students are very similar and those who do not fit the mold would most likely be very unhappy at Villanova. The typical student is wealthy, white, preppy, and from New Jersey, or New York.

Mike

Everyone is very competitive at Villanova. People fight for the same posistion in a club or organization and everything is interviewed based. It is kinda unfair for those that do not interview very well because they wont be able to get into anything.

Blake

While there is a stereotype of "Vanillanova," that is lessening over time as diversity has been increasing. Students tend to be fairly consevative and definitely mostly well-off. There are certain items that most girls have (e.g. ugg boots, vera bradley bags)

Ali

I think students not coming from an affluent family would need a little adjustment period. coming from a small public school to here where most people were at private or prep schools driving amazing cars and going out shopping or to each more often than the average college kid at another school would do, is strange at first. once you find your nitch it becomes better but still a little dawnting

Tori

I have never really walked into any room in Villanova where I felt uncomfortable due to issues such as race and religion- two issues that many people believe would be conflicting here. The catholic teachings are here to provide some morals as well as give the opportunity of catholic teachings and ideals to those interested- not to those opposed. All students interact whether catholic, jewish, athiest, etc.

Bernadette

Villanova gets the nickname "Vanilla-nova" based on its primarily white student body, but things are changing. We have active cultural societies and students from all over the world. I wouldn't say all the students are financially well-off and right-winged, but that's probably where 60-70{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the population lies. But I'd say both sides are well-represented and our school is politically aware. Hell, we had both Michelle Obama and (will be having) John McCain visit this year!!

Adam

The student body at Villanova is mainly Caucasian with its fair share of African Americans, Asians, and Indians. Although this school is Catholic is does not impose on those of different religions. I feel like all sorts of people are here at Villanova. There is not one person that will come to Villanova and find no one else like them. There are also many things to do around campus that would give every student something to do. Most students come from the Northeast from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts.

Caroline

Being a student-athelete, sometimes I feel I am shrugged off as just being someone that was accepted to Villanova just because of my athletic ability. I think students and professors alike are often surprised by how hard student athletes work, and that they can maintain grades similar to those of the average student.

Colleen

rich

Megan

Many of the students are from the northeast of the country, but there are students from all over. Most kids are wealthy, but I do know a lot of people here on scholarship. I think kids are politically aware, especially since this is the first election most of us can vote in.

Allison

There is a small minority of nonwhite kids here, most kids are richer, yes different types of students do interact through the community serivce, most kids from NJ or PA, not politically active

Ryan

Hot girls and nice people.

Devin

Very diverse, anyone can find a group of friends like them.

Rob

Villanova is a catholic university but it does not shove anything down your throat. But you do have to take christian theology classes.

Jessica

Although there is not a lot of diversity, all groups are tolerated well and their events are well-attended. A really independent and artistic student might feel out of place because of the type of kids that go to school here. Wear to class: jeans, uggs/flip flops, polos or t shirts, sweatshirts Most students are from the northeast (ny, nj, md, pa, ct)

Kelly

is composed of some of the most amazing students the country has to offer

Lauren

I have had experiences with people from different racial, socio-economic backgrounds here at Villanova. Students who do not want to be involved would feel out of place. Students get dressed for class for the most part. I see different types of students interacting. Most of the students are from the mid-atlantic and the northeast, and do a secure financial backgrounds. Students are politically aware for the most part and many are active in politics. I would say there is a mix of left, right, and center.

Becca

Most students were jeans and a shirt to class. Some girls are very fashionable, most are casual, and some, like me, prefer sweats alot.

Hayley

Villanova's student body is very much like high school: cliques exist. I'm pleasantly suprised at the large amount of Villanovans who are politically liberal.

Daniel

The students at villanova are very accepting people to every kind of person. it is something unique about a villanovan and I can say I see the differance between someone who started here and another person who is a transfer student. Villanovans who start here and end here have such a caring personallity about all human beings. As far as politics and views, the student body is conserverative, much more then most of the professors.

kelly

I think that some girls get a bit too dressed up for class, but I guess that whatever they want to wear is fine. I think it's true that different types of students interact, especially through extracurriculars, but of course everyone has their group of friends. Most students are probably from the east coast (especially northeast and mid-atlantic) or even California, not usually the middle of the country (except maybe the Chicago area). I think students, especially now because of the election, are politically aware. People are very involved with campaigns, and I've met people completely to the right side and completely to the left side of the political spectrum. Some people (mostly business students) have talked about how they will be very successful and make money one day, but I don't think that it's an overwhelming amount of students.

Leslie

organizations for everyone (example: it's a catholic school but has protestant and other faith groups). A lot of people from New York, new Jersey, and Pennsylvania (and New England), but one doesn't feel out of place being from elsewhere (i'm from Seattle and it's never been an issue). I do feel that the socio-economic status is higher than I've ever been a part of. I've never felt "poor", but I have felt out of place on campus at times when it's clear that my money is not spent in the same way as others spend theirs. A little too money-centered, all in all; students are very interested in spending money and getting a major that will earn them more money.

Alex

I think Villanova is traditionally considered very preppy, but they new freshman are a variety of students. Most students dress up to class and various different types of stuents interact with one another. Most of the students from Villanova are from New Jersey and long Island.

Margaret

4 tables = racial minorities; sororities/fraternities; dorks; other most students are from new jersey most students are wealthy some students are politically aware/active ... others are ignorant

Alex

Though a majority of the students are white, I feel like everyone can find their place to fit in no matter what. There are so many things always going on. I feel like we have mostly Conservative views. Financial background: well-to-do.

grace

A majority of Villanova students are from wealthy backgrounds, predominately white. Most females dress very nicely for class.

Harper

Villanova's student body overall is still very ignorant and scared to go outside their high school walls; therefore is you're not a white, upper-middle class conservative heterosexual you will find it very hard to adjust to life at Villanova. Must students dress up in $1000 outfits sadly. Rarely do different types of students interact unless in concerns athletics. Four tables: 1. Athletes 2. White Males 3. White females 4. Non-white students. Most students are from PA, NJ, NY. Most students are politically aware and active and mainly conservative repulicans.

Lindsey

UNBELIEVABLE

Liza

Community is not just lip-service...we mean it!

Matt

A lot of students are from prosperous backgrounds, but you'll still meet plenty of down to earth students as well

Dale

The student body is a lot more diverse than people realize. The students just perpetuate the homogenous stereotype of our school.

Maria

I myself feel that Villanova is well-diversified. I believe that everyone could find a place in Villanova's community, but should be warned before-hand about the preppiness factor. Students wear everything, from high-heels, polos, dresses to sweatpants and t-shirts to class. Different types of students do interact. There are Villanova students from everywhere, but the majority that I have met are from the tri-state area, Conneticut, Massachusetts, and California. The most prevalent financial backgrounds are middle to high-class families, but again, there are all different financial backgrounds. Students are somewhat politically aware/active, finding left, right and center throughout campus. Students' financial futures are deifnitely discussed.

Pat

most from jersey and new york and PA the tri-state area mostly wealthy, moderate political views, heavily career oriented student body

Kim

I would say a very good amount of people at Villanova are Catholic, but many of those don't practice and don't care about church or anything to do with it. So don't think that if you're not Catholic you won't fit in, the worst part is just when you're not Catholic and you have to take theology and you don't know who Jesus' apostles are, while everyone else does. Most kids are really preppy, not so much popped collars, but think jcrew cardigans, lots of argyle, sheersucker printed stuff and just expensive clothing all around. Everyone is very concerned with their image, and a lot of girls get up extra early in the morning to make sure they look like they're about to hit the runway. It seems that most kids are really rich, and if they actually aren't, they still make sure their wardrobes reflect it. Everytime i see someone who looks a bit alternative, aka skinny jeans, american apparel hoodies and cool hair, i can't help but feel bad because they just look so out of place amongst the jcrew catalogue models next to them. There are also normal kids who are pretty cool, and then there are those who are really into service trips and habitat for humanity and that sort of thing. Villanova is known for its service oreinted students, so those types of people can easily fit in as well.

Jay

Completely depends on what group of people you are hanging out with

Michael

Its mostly white. Most kids are wealthy and dress well. Political/social activism on campus is basically dead, most kids haven't the faintest clue of what's going on, hence the term "the Villanova bubble." The causes we back are sometimes downright ridiculous. Villanova tries too hard to cater to its minorities, and the end result is somewhere between pathetic and downright patronizing. This school does not need to be celebrating Muslim holidays by offering traditional middle east fare in its dining halls.

Christine

I would have to say that most of the students here are fairly wealthy. Also, our school is Catholic. Sometimes it does seem as if we don't have too much of a variety. Even though we don't have many ethnicities, religions or diverse groups, the ones that do exist interact well with everyone. All students are very accepting and do not judge people based on race, religion or socio-economics. Most students are from New Jersey, Pennsylvania or Massachussets.

Caroline

One of the most unique things about Villanova's student body is their dedication to serve others. While Villanova students, party hard and study hard, one of their passions is giving back to the community. Service Break Trips are one of the most popular things to do here on campus, and people come back from them saying it was the best thing they have done at college. Service is definitely a big part of what the students like to do here at Villanova. Most Villanova students are from New York, New Jersey, or Massachusetts. Those are definitely the top three responses that you will get from students here. For the most part people are from the Northeast, though there are people who come from all over the country. There is also a large Puerto Rican population at Villanova as the University does a lot of recruiting with international students. Villanova students for the most part are very preppy. Walking around campus can sometimes be like walking around a J-Crew or Ralph Lauren magazine, but not everyday. Fridays or any day when its cold or rainy, it usually looks like everyone rolled out of bed and just made it to class in time. There really isn't much in between on the campus, people either dress way up, or dress way down. While the preppy attire may lead one to thing the school is a bit snobbish, you'll mostly find that this isn't true. Students on the campus are for the most part very approachable and willing to help.
