Villanova University Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Michelle

Not completely, because there are a variety of people here with all different backgrounds.

Beth

No

Steve

While there are people who would fall into the above category, Villanova students are so much more. Many are interested in service and a surprising number of students participate in service break trips all over the country and the world during the fall, winter and spring breaks. Many students are politically aware and there are strong college republican and college democrat clubs on campus. In addition, there are organizations formed dealing with issues such as AIDS to the crisis in Darfur. Sports are popular on campus and everyone follows the school basketball team enthusiastically. Intramurals are popular as well.

Ashley

yes

Jamie

The skinny white girls who do coke, is partially true. Villanova is starting to change because more kids are getting denied and the freshmen are getting smarter. There are normal cool kids here but you have to search for them.

Cameron

To a degree, it does appear that many of the students here are from wealthy white homes

Kathy

not 100 {4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}, but close

Just as all stereotypes are based in truth, some aspects of these stereotypes are true. At any university, especially one where tuition is over $45000 a year, there will be students from rich families. And some of those students will be arrogant about their money. That is not, however, a generalization about all Villanova students. Villanova is a school with difficult classes and weeknights are often nights filled with meetings and work. However, there are plenty of parties at Villanova if that's what you're into.

Cody

yes sir

Liz

I'd say it pretty much lives up to this reputation.

Alex

To a degree these stereotypes are accurate. Theres a lot of La coste and Polo clothing around and some students are cocky assholes because of the affluent backgrounds they come from. That being said, there are plenty of people that do not fall into that stereotype and are genuinely good and down to earth.

Kate

These stereotypes are accurate to a degree, some people are well dressed but others are sweatpants all the time. It is a pretty rich school, and diversity is low, but it's getting better.

christina

to some extent, yes. although we're improving, we still aren't a very diverse campus. i think a lot of kids are extremely well-off, but there are a bunch of more "average" kids too. as for the girls, there are the prissy and preppy ones, but you definitely don't need to own gucci clothes and a house in the hamptons to fit in here.

Jesse

Kinda. There is a lot more diversity than people think. A lot of people are stuck up, but there are some really nice people here too.

Amy

In many cases, yes. It is difficult to find people that aren't exactly the same as everyone else at school

Mari

most of the times

Ellen

Not entirely, a lot of people at white and upper-middle class but they are diverse in other ways and there are lots of different types of people and those that do fit the stereotype can be the really fun and nice

Kevin

To some extent... its an expensive school, so there is a good deal of money. Like everywhere there is a mix of people, some of whom reflect the stereotype, some who do not.

Jess

The "VanillaNova" which is a comment about the lack of racial diversity on this campus is somewhat true, but you have to keep in mind that there are going to be a lot of Irish Catholics and such at this school, because 'Nova is a Catholic school. However, the school is making a clear effort to increase diversity with the incoming classes. It is a hot topic right now. As far as the stereotype about a bunch of rich kids, you have the kids with money and you have the kids without money. Just like every other campus. It is a private school, so it is generally going to cost more money than a public school, but this is not really any different from any other private school. Not everyone is just some rich kid. As far as the stereotype about 'Nova being a scholl with a lot of spirit for their school and basketball team, I couldn't agree more. It's an amazing place to be when it's basketball season (and of course any other time too.)

Beth

for the most part, but you can always find your exceptions

Jennifer

None of them are

Bridget

yes i do think some are

Christine

people may seem similar on objective dimensions, but demographic measures do not fully depict the student body

Katherine

It is a fairly preppy school, and a lot of people come from New Jersey, but there are people from all over the country. If you make an effort to meet new people from new places, it is easy to do. There are a lot of minorities on campus too, and the University is making great strides to make sure that the minority population is well represented on campus in the future, as well. No, Villanova doesn't have a frat row or a ton of obvious parties on campus, but you can make your own fun. You find friends that have the same interests as you, and it is easy to find things to do. Like any campus, there are weekends where there isn't much to do, but you can just hang out with your friends and have a laid back time for a few weekends out of the semester. It's all about finding the crowd that has the same interests as you, and you will have fun.

Sarah

Neither of these nicknames are true. Villanova is as fun as you make it, just like any other school. And, although Villanova is comprised mainly with white students, there are other races other than caucasians that attend.

Christina

there are some people who fit the stereotypes but there is much more diversity than most people think.

Matt

they can be...depends on who you know and what you do. plenty to do for fun, but the demographic is mostly wealthy white kids

Brittany

To an extent, but there is so much more diveristy in backgrounds and character than is given credit.

Alex

pretty accurate yes

Shannon

yes

Mike

Yes

Blake

yes, for the most part, there are certainly people who meet the "villanova girl" and "villanova boy" ideas.

Ali

in many cases, yes

Tori

Not at all.

Bernadette

Stereotypes are always based on a small sect of the population, and of course there are people at Nova who fit into the stereotype mold. But most of the students (even ones who may come off as fake and obnoxious) are caring and really sweet.

Adam

Perhaps a majority but not true for all students

Caroline

In general, yes.

We are a predominantly white school and there are many elite schools in the country that are similar. Religion is not everything here. The school doesnt keep track on the population that is Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, etc because the school emphasizes that it is a choice and nobody should feel pressured by what other people are.

James

Sort of, but it's chaning

Allison

for the majority, yes

Ryan

I guess to some extent. They wouldn't be stereotypes if they weren't somewhat true. Most of the people at Villanova are really nice and genuinely good people though.

Devin

no, villanova is extremely fun if you make it fun which is how every school is, so maybe they don't have a row of frat houses on campus so you can go partying but doing that isn't necessary for fun. And everyone is not rich.

Rob

No, there is some diversity although not that much. Also, there is plenty of fun to be had.

Jessica

overall, villanova is a relatively wealthy school that is certainly predominately white, although the diversity on campus has increased over the past few years. the party stereotype is not as accurate, villanova is probably right on par with most schools in that department. the upcoming election has really sparked a lot of political conversation and surprisingly, there are a lot more democrats than i thought on campus.

Kelly

only a small minority

Lauren

Sometimes

Becca

Only a small percentage fill this category.

Hayley

as far as appearances go, yes.

Daniel

Yes and No. There are two halfs to the Villanova Community. One half is exactly like the stereotype, preps who do nothing at villanova but party for four years. But there is another half that do everything at nova from break trips to the villanovan to special olymipics and balloon day.
