What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Kathy

The school revolves around the basketball team. a lot of people think there is not much to do on campus on the weekend, but you just have to look around a little and be ok with not drinking for a night. For the freshman a major activity is going to the frat parties off campus.

mandy

The most popular organizations on campus are undoubtedly the service organizations. It can be really competitive to get involved since applications and interviews are necessary for just about everything. The campus has many involved individuals and while this is a great thing, sometimes the same people get into everything, creating an elite group of the over-involved and leaving others out on the edges. It is really easy to meet awesome people at Villanova. Participating in any organization on campus provides the opportunity to meet great friends. There are fraternities and sororities on campus, but no specific housing. I think this is a great way to have the option for people to participate in frats/sororities but to not have it take over campus life. My roommate is in a sorority, and it's one of the biggest ways that she gets involved, but I am not and I am still super-involved in a lot of stuff on campus. Off campus, the Main Line communities are right here with great restaurants and shops. However, there is a train to Philly right on campus and that is so much fun on the weekends. Villanova is close enough to the city that it's easy to go in, but it's not so close that there's not a campus community feel.

Cody

social life is bumpin

Liz

Sports are veryy popular here. Most people here were varsity athletes in high school, so even intramurals can very very competitive. People here are also pretty trusting, leaving their doors open when they leave the room. There are guest speakers quite often, and Villanova almost has a variety of events going on.

Alex

If you want to have a fun time here you can. Its not as easy to find a party here as it would be at a state school but if your really want to you can. Frat parties are really hit or miss and some frats can be very exclusive with their functions. Because we are so close to Philadelphia there is always something to do (clubs, restaurants, bars).

Kate

There are a multitude of student groups on campus, anything you want you can find.

villanova is huge on community service. the mission trips in particular are amazing experiences, and i have never been the same since i traveled to guatemala and taught english in a mayan indigenous village in the middle of the jungle in the peten region of guatemala; the opportunities here are unbelievable. another aspect i love is that a lot of people here go to church. at home, none of my friends really go to church, and i love being able to go to a student mass that's filled to the brim with students willing to go to church all on their own. i went to public school my entire life, so it was nice to come to a private school and see other kids that are as dedicated to my faith as i am. the best way to meet people is to join clubs. my advice is to join a bunch, and you'll meet so many people its ridiculous. i love knowing a lot of upperclassmen and underclassmen; it makes campus a little smaller and it also allows for the opportunity to say hi to at least a few people as you walk across campus.

Jesse

Freshman year people would leave their dorm doors open, but by sophmore year that kinda died out. Basketball is life at this school. The majority of students have a "nova nation" tee and rock it to basketball games. Novafest is one of the few on campus events where Villanova looks the other way towards campus drinking. Last year, west campus was PACKED with people drinking by the volleyball courts. There must have been at least 2000 kids partying that day, it was a good time, but you had to keep your beer in a solo cup. Frats are horrible here. There are no frat houses, more or less, don't join a Frat, there is no Frat scene. There used to be some cool underground Frats that were fun, but admin tryed to put an end to that. Sororities are a little more popular, but from what i've heard, most sisters end up hating some of their sisters by junior year.

Amy

A lot of activities, things to get involved with. Frats and sororities tend to dominate. Musically and artistically retarded campus.

Mari

It has great activities and many organizations. If a person is not involved is because he or she doesn't want to.

Ellen

Students leave their doors open, though less sophomore and junior year. Basketball games are great, football is getting better. I met my current roommate because she lived down the hall and my other best friends i met becuase they lived down the hall from my best friend from highschool. Other best friends i met on Habitat service trips and in classes. Saturday night of no drinking - go to a movie, the mall, hang out, go into town for ice cream, go ice skating in the city.. if im awake at 2am on a tuesday i better be doing homework or at a party because St. Patty s day was on a monday.

Kevin

Social life hinges on campus activites. No real general party scene like at bigger schools. Parties tend to be withing activites, groups, pre- existing friends.

Jess

There are so many clubs and organizations on this campus to get involved in. Greek life is pretty big in that 25{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students are involved, but there aren't houses on this campus, so it does not take over your life. There are also many many students that participate in Habitat for Humanity or other Service Break Trips. That is definitely a big aspect of this school. (Over 800 students a year participate in these). Villanova is VERY involved in Special Olympics and during that weekend you will find almost everyone volunteering in some way whether it is dedicating time to being in charge or a sport or just cheering on for moral support. You can also get involved in Blue Key (giving tours), Orientation, Student Government, Varsity/Club/Intermurals, and a lot more. As far as social life, the bars are right on the street the university is on, there are a lot of off campus parties hosted by frats and sports teams, people have parties in their rooms/apartments, and of course there is always Philadelphia which is just a train ride away.

Beth

campus ministry is huge, almost everyone seems to do a break trip. late nights are usually for girl talk or homework. clubs and meetings, usually related to either a sorority/campus ministry or sometimes p&j/media club/music group keep students way busy. novafest and homecoming are the two biggest events, and they are always fun :)

Jennifer

There are an unlimited number of clubs on campus and if you do not wish to join any of them you can create your own. Students in my dorm leave their doors open. There is a ton to do on the weekends, as well as alcohol free events every night. I always have something to do on campus and it's not necessarily alcohol related and I still always enjoy myself.

Bridget

I think there are a lot of things to get involved in and there is a lot of service that students initiate and take part in, but although the competitiveness is a good thing, i dont like how you have to apply to do service. I do think in terms of the social scene there is not a lot to do on the weekends and in terms of parties and stuff like that I feel like you have to know someone to get anywhere. I like how my dorm theres always someone up and it is very comfortable almost like a little family where you know everyone in the dorm, not just on your floor. There is not a lot to do on campus, i do wish there were more things to do besides drinking and going to a party on campus.

Christine

-service groups are very popular, also blue key/ambassadors, sororities, sport teams, orientation, and special olympics -i am involved with relay for life which is a patient service/fundraiser for the american cancer society; it is a cancer walk held in april and raises ~$60000 each year from villanova students -students leave dorm room doors open freshman year, but not after that -men's basketball games are popular, but other sports do not draw a big crowd -guest speakers always draw a big crowd, whether it is because of extra credit offered or course requirements, or interest -theater productions usually sell out -the dating scene is not that bad, most people are not in committed relationships though -i met my closest friends in my freshman year dorm and in my freshman year classes -if i am awake at 2am on a tuesday i am studying -traditions include novafest, special olympics fall festival, saint thomas of villanova day, the day of service -people party usually party about 3 days per week -greek life is very important, most girls are involved in sororities -last weekend i went to happy hour and a habitat for humanity break trip reunion, babysat, and did homework and went to mass -nova has an organization devoted to non-drinking activities and there are always things going on on-campus -off campus you can go to the king of prussia mall which has everything you could want to do, and nova runs a shuttle if you dont have a car

Katherine

I lived in a smaller dorm on a part of campus that was separated from most of the Freshman, my first year at Villanova. In this dorm, Delurey, I only closed my door to sleep and change. There was a trusting, open atmosphere about the community. I thought I would feel separated from the rest of my class and the events going on, but I really felt to be part of a smaller, more tight-knit community. I met most of my closest friends in this dorm. They were the poeple I lived around in Delurey. Now, however, I live in one of the two main sophomore dorms, and no one leaves their doors open. It is a much louder, "crazier" dorm than I lived in last year. Like I said above, the Basketball fans are very loyal. Last weekend Villanova was in the Sweet 16 in Detroit. There was a bunch of people who were interested in going, and a phone chain began. I went on a road trip to Detroit at 4:30 Am on Friday morning, after agreeing to go on Monday night. I had one of the best times of my life, that I will never forget. I left with one of my best friends, and came back with 13 new, great friends. (even though we lost the game!!)

Sarah

Villanova provides many different opportunities for students to be involved with the campus and outside of the company. At the beginning of the school year, all students are able to go to one location to visit representitives of all of the clubs and activities they can get involved in. There are many guest speakers, cultural events, and theater shows, plays, and movies that occur all year long.

Christina

There are many opportunities for students to get involved. The campus activity team always has events going on on the weekends. There are free movies every fri, sat, and sunday nights.

Brittany

Students are really involved here at Villanova with the most popular groups being Blue Key and Special Olympics. Sororities and Fraternities are also part of the social scence but not necessary. Villanova is passionate about its basketball team and games draw large crowds. Guest speakers such as Michelle Obama fill up stadiums and other smaller lectures are well attended. Tradition is also big on campus with Hoops Mania kicking off the basketball season and Nova Fest wrapping up the spring semester with a great day of activities concluded by a great band like the Goo Goo Dolls. Partying is what each student makes of it. Students often hold parties off campus and transportation to such can be difficult. Ticket parties occur a couple of times put on during the semester by frats. Tickets usually range from 20-30 dollars and are held at a bar in Philly. Philly is a great city to explore, but can be quite expensive. Restaurant week is popular and also Campus Philly day which allows students to explore the city at a low cost.

Alex

Sororities and fraternities are very popular. Club sports are also a big part of the school. Some of my best friends are in both my sorority and on club tennis with me. Everyone in the dorms leaves their doors open. My closest friend was met during orientation. People party throughout the week, mostly concentrated on the Thurs-Sat though. While Greek life does not run the school, it opens up many opportunities to get to know the university, its students, and all it has to offer. Sat nights do not have to include drinking. Off campus we go to dinner and shopping down the main line.

Shannon

Greek life dominates the social scene and those not included can often feel very left out. Students rarely leave doors open. Basketball games are extremely popular. The best traditions are the all day party on West Campus on the Saturday of Novafest, Fiji Island on the night before reading day and Hoops Mania. People usually party Thursday, Friday and Saturday of every week, unless they have too much work to do. The best thing I have done at Villanova was a Spring Break Habitat for Humanity trip to Myrtle Beach. I met amazing people and learned priceless lessons. These trips are very popular at Villanova, with over 400 students participating last March.

A lot of variety in activities! I'm pretty involved with the different service opportunities that Villanova offers. How social the dorms are depends on what dorm you are in - the smaller ones tend to be more friendly. A lot of people here meet, start dating and then get married in the Villanova chapel! If I'm awake at 2 am on a Tuesday, if not doing homework, I would likely be playing rock band or wii with my friends. A couple of great traditions are special olympics fall festival and novafest.

Ali

Students in dorms do leave doors open, usually good relations with neighbors. I met my closest friends because they live across the hall.

Tori

There is a lot to do at Villanova- the only problem is that everybody wants to do the activities, especially the popular ones like Blue Key, Special Olympics, and Orientation so you have to apply. The application process is competitive- but if you are unable to get into those clubs at first try, you can always apply again next year and there are plenty of other clubs to join on campus.

Bernadette

The social scene at Nova isn't crazy, and I wouldn't call it a party school either. But I've never been pressed with having nothing to do. Even if we aren't drinking, there's one of the biggest malls in the country located close by, and tons of restaurants down the street. Dorm halls range from small former-houses to huge 5 story, multi-winged buildings. You get a different experience with dorm life depending on your dorm hall, and I've lived in both large and small. I met my best friends in the tiny dorm building we had freshman year, where we kept our doors open all the time and did everything together. But this year in the larger building the doors stay closed, and I don't really know my neighbors. It's all a matter of the effort you make, really.

Adam

The most popular groups on campus are Blue Key which gives tours around campus, Intramurals which provides a variety of sports, as well as Special Olympics which holds the yearly competition. Within the dorms, a majority of students keep their doors closed. There are however special communities in which everyone within the dorm is very friendly and keeps their doors open. Because the student body is 6,400 the school is relatively small and although you do not know everyone, you can usually draw some sort of connection with everyone. There are a lot of strong sororities and fraternities influence on campus. Greek life is not allowed on campus but students usually have their letters in their windows to represent what sorority/fraternity they are in.

Caroline

The men's basketball team is very popular, so the winter months often revolve around games on the weekends at the Wachovia Center. It is a good way to show your school spirit, and enjoy the company of your peers.

Colleen

fun

Megan

There is a lot of stuff to do around campus or off, that includes drinking or doesn't include drinking. Athletic events are popular. Kids leave their doors open a lot and hang out in the hallways, go to lunch or dinner together. You really get to know the people in your hallway.

Allison

Blue Key and sororities, basketball is a big deal, hang out with kids you meet freshman year in the dorms, people usually party on weekends unless in a sorority or frat

Ryan

People tend to be really involved in activities/organizations. Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity are really big at nova.

Devin

Basketball is huge on campus

Rob

Thursday, Friday, Saturday there are always parties close to campus or in Philadelphia. Fraternities and sports teams throw most of the parties and are what I would recomend if trying to have a good time.

Jessica

SGA, blue key and admissions ambassadors, special olympics, habitat for humanity and other community service are the most popular activities. The Villanovan - student newspaper. weekly publication. 6500 circulation Athletic events: very popular Traditions: Novafest, Hoops Mania, Accapellapalooza generally, people party thurs, fri, sat Off campus: mall, take a train into philly

Kelly

great.

Lauren

It is a very involved campus, with both sports and service. I have been involved with Habitat for Humanity here at Villanova. Students, depending on the dorm, will leave their doors open. Athletic events are popular and guest speakers are too. I met my closest friends my freshman year because I living in a small dorm. If I am awake at 2 am on a Tuesday it is most likely due to homework. There are a few events that happen yearly, homecoming, hoops mania, and novafest. People party a fair amount but nothing out of control. The greek life is popular, more for girls than guys. Last weekend I went to a party and hung out with friends. Saturday night you can go to the movies, go into Philly and see a show, there are lot of things to do that do not involve drinking.

Becca

I am not as involved as I hope that I would have been, but there are many oppurtunities to get involved. Service is a big activity on campus. There are several organizations primarliry dedicated to service. AThletic evernts such as basketball are very popular. I met my closest friends freahman year in the dorms. If I am awake at 2am Tuesday, Iam studying/doing hw-otherwise I would be sleeping. Partying depends on one's major- business majors party the most. I only do so on the weekends, if at all. Last weekend I watched Villanova's B-ball team in the sweet 16 game.

Hayley

My clubs provide many opportunities for field trips and events. Partying is a big thing, like at any other college, but I was expecting it to be less prevalent here.

Daniel

Most popular groups would be special olymipics, blue key society, and orientation. I am part of a group that is kind of closed off, the naval reserve officers corps. We have, as I believe, the best NROTC unit, maybe the best commisioning program in the united states. I am not the person to ask about the dating scene nor am I awake on a tuesday night at 2am. Weekends sure, I go over and visit my best friends in nrotc. Greek life for girls i think is more important but not mandatory to have a social life. For guys, it basically doesnt exist. people do party a lot, less I think than most campuses but still I think a lot. There are however a lot of things to do on a saturaday night, you really just have to look around.

kelly

Some popular groups are blue key society, orientation, SGA, sororities and fraternities, habitat for humanity, and many others. I'm part of a sorority and I love it, I've gotten to know great girls through it. In some dorms people keep the door open, in mine they do because I live in a learning community. If I'm awake at 2am on a tuesday I'm either studying or just chatting with my friends normally. Traditions are novafest, hoops mania, acapellapalooza, day of service, balloon day, special olympics, greek week, and many others. Most weekends probably include drinking, but there are definitely things to do without it. Connelly plays movies for free, there are often plays and stuff, you can go into Philadelphia also.

Leslie

Dorms are very friendly - a lot of good friends are found within the freshmen year dorms. Many opportunities (guest speakers, lectures) for different topics and interests. Freshmen orientation and blue key (campus tours for prospective students) are two of the most popular groups to be a part of, which is bittersweet because it's unusually hard to get into them.

Alex

there are lots of opportunities to get involved around campus. There is tons of opportunities to volunteer and play on club sports. Students leave their doors open in the dorms and basketball events are really popular. I met my closes friends in the hallway of my dorm freshman year.

Dave

On campus party scene is dismal. Basically if you're not 21, you have to rely on fraternities for social events. BRING GREEK HOUSING ONTO CAMPUS, OR AT LEAST VILLANOVA SANCTIONED HOUSING NEAR CAMPUS. Work things out with Radnor twp.

Margaret

i met my closest friends in class and in my hall people party thurs - sunday

Alex

We always have something going on to get people involved. We're not really a party school but UPenn is a train ride away! And so is the City. Greek Life is definitely important; I'm in Delta Gamma and I've found that it's expanded my social life greatly! But I feel that if a student finds any organization they feel comfortable with, they'll feel the same way. There are tons of ways to get involved.. and as soon as you do, you'll realize that college isn't a pain after all!

grace

Many of Villanova students are involved in sororities and fraternities. Nova brings in a lot of guest speakers, most of whom are highly regarded and has made significant contributions.
