What is your overall opinion of this school?

Virginia Tech, tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Appalachian, is one of the most unique campuses in the United States. Known for it's signature "Hokie Stone" buildings, the facilities are well maintained and kept with a modern feel. The academic programs at VT are top tier, offering alumni the comfort of having earned a degree that will allow them to be competitive in the working world. Surrounding the sprawling campus is the town of Blacksburg, which offers a feel of the Appalachia culture to students. Off-campus housing is abundant, affordable, and the town folk are more than happy to welcome students as neighbors.

I love VT! It's truly my "home" and I honestly would rather stay there year round instead of returning to my hometown. I love the food, I love the people, and I love the campus. I couldn't imagine a better school to swim for and study at. The best academics and athletics around! A perfect happy medium...

What is your overall opinion of this school?

For this review I will list my personal standpoint on academics, diversity, financial aid, Greek life, location, and infrastructure. I will be honest, from a personal standpoint, I love the academic opportunities offered here, but I do not like other factors occurring at this university. Academic programs: Pros: -There are undergraduate research opportunities. You will have to network with faculty -I am in line to getting a publication of my own research -I have also taken the opportunity of taking graduate classes in biomedical engineering Cons: -You don't necessarily gain a new perspective from most of the classes offered -The general education classes are very large, impersonal, and have poor teachers (For example: The chemistry classes will have 1 professor teach 2 classes of 300 students) -Most departments solely focused on research since it brings the most endowment for the school, which is not bad but deviates from the teaching. Diversity: -Demographically speaking, the majority of the students matriculating are in-state and mostly Caucasian, with a large portion of the students from the metro-DC suburban area -At least the place is diverse politically Financial Aid: Personally, I do not come from a economically well family, and financial aid has not helped so far Out of state tuition is expensive Greek Life: -I am not part of Greek life, but there are a lot of opportunity for Greek life, considering Virginia Tech is a state school -A lot of philanthropic events are occurring -Dues are expensive, average of $1000 or more, if you do not have the money then you cannot join Location: -The area is in rural Virginia, and is practically a college town, meaning there is not a lot of activities to do such as going art museums/movie theatres, but there a lot of bars and restaurants -If you are a student, do not work in this college town because once students are gone for winter/spring/summer break, businesses in the town will loose money and have to make lay-offs (it is best to do work-study) -There is no hospital or even a mall to go to (You would have to go to Christiansburg VA) Infrastructure -The residential dorms are bad and need to be updated (off campus housing is so much better) -It seems the administration is mostly spending their endowment towards infrastructure (such as adding more dorms) to expand the student population to increase revenue from tuition and fees (Personally, I wish they allocated the money to hiring more faculty/staff to make the education personal)

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Sate University, or Virginia Tech for short, is a school where there is always something happening. From a Chocolate Milk Monday club to a Pink concert by Diplo, there is never a boring day. With all fun aside, there is also an increasingly high value for education. Professors are there for you every step of the way. Some help more than others, but there is not one that does not care about you falling through the cracks. If you are, that is not the professor's fault, because there are many office hours, help sessions, and not to mention, the professors are always reachable by email, 24/7. Virginia Tech is a combination of the best academics, a fun environment where we can be ourselves, and something for just about everyone, including the best food, and the great and caring staff who always wants us to do our best and never less. This college truly lives out its motto of Ut Prosim, and here, we serve everyone and anyone.

Going to Virginia Tech is honestly the best decision I made in my life. I was able to leave my comfort zone, because the community here is SO fantastic. I think most everyone here is very welcoming and I feel so safe here. There's friends who reach out and makes you feel so loved.

It is great here. I just finished my freshman year in the Corps of Cadets and I will just say I like it about as much as any freshman can. Even only being here for about a year I have learned a lot about leadership and what it means to be a leader. I am in Band Company and get to attend all of the football games and perform in the pregame shows, which is really fun. The academics are challenging, but I can always find help when I need it. Overall this is a great place to be.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Virginia Tech is a welcoming and safe place that I am extremely happy to call home. The people here in Blacksburg are very friendly and go out of their way to help others in need. We are a tight knit community that also likes to give back to the area around the campus instead of just focusing on ourselves. In the classroom, students are always engaged in learning new material. They are focused on what the professors have to say and are eager to better themselves. The professors always have plenty of office hours where students can come in and get help with their work. If there are any concerns about the classes, the professors will get back to you in a timely manor so the issue can be resolved. Besides the community and academics, the food on and off campus is delicious and if you're not careful with your money, you will find yourself running out of dining dollars quickly. Athletics at Virginia Tech is a big part of the community. People come from all around the country just to check out a football or basketball game. When Enter Sandman comes on in Lane stadium or Cassell Coliseum, everyone gets on their feet to get the games started. Overall, Virginia Tech is an amazing place that I would recommend anyone looking to further their education to come and join the Hokie Nation!

Choosing to go to school at Virginia Tech was the greatest decision I've ever made. Here at Virginia Tech I have met some of my closest friends and already made some of my greatest memories. What really drew me to come to school here was how genuinely nice all the people seemed, as well as how beautiful the campus is. Since coming here, I have received an education beyond what I imagined. The professors here are tremendous, and all will make time to help you, even outside of their office hours. Classes vary in size, however, you can often find the class you want in the size you want, not just in one size. Aside from academics, there is plenty to do around and on campus. Whatever you're into, I'm sure there is a club or group for it here, which makes it easy to get involved. One other thing to note, is that we have the greatest food in the country. Before coming to Tech, this was something I did not think much of, but when I sit down to eat a steak and see my friends at another school eating a sloppy joe, it sure is nice. Overall, what really makes me love Tech is the perfect balance between the social/fun side of college, and the academics side.

This is home! I was hesitant about such a large campus at first but now I know this is where I belong! There are so many opportunities on campus and off for people to engage in from sports to clubs to Greek Life. For such a big campus, there is something about it that makes you feel like a close-knit family. On Saturdays in the fall you will find most of the campus in Lane Stadium cheering on the football team. On warm days in the spring hundreds of students hit the drill field and take advantage of the beautiful weather from playing games to homework under the trees. Sometimes big colleges are not for everyone but if you are like me and don't quite know what is a good fit for you, take a leap of faith right into our open, maroon, and orange arms. I am positive you will find your second home here. Go Hokies!!
