Virginia State University Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Jasmine

Knowing what I know now about college life and making the transition I would advise myself to break my bad habits of procrastination. I always get my work done but it usually takes me too long to start on it. Breaking the habit in High school, so in college I can stay on top of my work and get it done, instead of doing it at the last minute. Another piece of advice I would give myself is to apply to more than two schools. I've always had my mind set on going to Virginia State University but it wouldn't hurt to have other options. I love VSU, and I doubt If I would have gone anywhere else but by not applying to other schools I didn't have a chance to consider any other schools. Something else I would tell myself is to apply for more scholarships and grants. Stay far away from loans, they have to be paid back and they are a hassle; they should be the last solution to helping Me pay for school. These are a few things I would go back to high school and warn myself about.

Pamela

I wouldn't have much to tell myself . I would say that it isn't everything that the movies portray. College life isn't partying until 5 a.m. , greeks always on the yard showcasing, sleeping in until whenever. I would have told myself don't think that i won't have to continue to expect to work hard. I would have definitely told myself to learn to become social in the very beginning and jump into the life head first. The most important decision i would have said to myself was to get more scholarships because you WILL need them.

Keambra

The advice I would give myself in high school is to not be so shy and join more clubs. In college you can't come in shy because people like to talk to you and get to know you. You also can't be shy because then you would be by yourself all the time, and being in college by yourself is never any fun. I would have told myself to join more clubs in high schocol because in college there are many diffrent things you can join. If you begin to join clubs in high school then you can get a feel of what being in a club feels like.

Rogdreka

If I could go back in time and talk to myself in high school, there would be a lot that I would have changed just by the experience of a first semester freshman. One of the biggest things I've learned and wish I would have known during my high school years is time ediquette. I was involved in a lot of extra curricular activities and really didnt understand the concept at the time of how to manage my time. If I would have known how to follow through this, I would of had much better grades and a better time schedule each day to obtain. A lot of high school peers and still to this day in college we as students have a major problem with procrastination, but with time management this won't affect putting work aside because you would have a daily schedule to obtain to fullfill you duties for that day. It is a big transition, but with knowing what I've learn, I will always set goals to achieve my education.

Joy

"It is my first day of my senior year in high school. I have been waiting for this year since middle school. Im friends with nearly everyone and all of the administration loves me. They say I have a strong drive and am a pleasure to work with. The most exciting thing about this year by far is going to be graduating and applying to colleges. I have been filling out applications left and right. I applied to many colleges that have the major Im interested in. Near the middle of the year my friends started to act different. It seems as though Im focusing so hard on trying to make it to college that my friends seem to think I am under the impression Im better then them. But like my teachers have said, I have drive and if thats what those so called friends think of me then so be it. I refuse to let anyone hold me back from my dreams." If this was me in high school then I wouldn't have much advice to give, but unfortunately thats not the way things worked for me. Don?t be afraid to be yourself and register early.

Taylore

I would definitely tell myself to choose my college carefully. Also, look for more scholarships and financial aid options. Knowing how competitive college is, I would tell myself to study more and take the SAT more seriously to better my chance at the best college possible. Also, work and save as much money as possible for side items needed for college. Lastly and most important, I would tell myself to take honors and advanced placement classes to help prepare me for college.

Jamal

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would make sure I am enlightened about independence that accompanies college life. All too often individuals are bombarded with expectations of strenuous work. As an American you will be a student for approximately eighteen years; with that much experience you must know yourself and be aware that work is what you make of it. Speaking to myself I would put more emphasis on independence because you no longer have people checking behind you. College is an attempt to acclimate individuals to the ?real? world. It prepares individuals to become a productive citizen in today?s society. It is not a guarantee that a successful career will follow graduation, but knowledge that should make life easier. Acquiring intellect is the easiest part of becoming an undergraduate; more emphasis should be focused on the transition from dependence to independence. Last but not least stay FOCUSED.

dedra

dont rush into nothing.choose a school that fits you not just because your friends go there.

Valencia

If i could go back in time i would prepare myself to study. I did not have to do much studying in high school, but college it is all about studying and doing all work. Since there is not the same number of test and quizzes in college like there is in high school, all assignments must be completed. Homework is worth more in college and there is abosolutly no class work in class just alot of note taking. More likely, there is more time to just hang out and have fun then anyone realize so there is plenty time to party and study. Make sure your grades are up before deciding to have fun. Overall, being responsibile, managing your time and do all work that is required there in no way you would fail at being a successful college student.

Brittany

I would say that education is important and it doesn't matter what school you go to as long as you get a degree. There are going to be challenges but the challenges only make you a stronger and a wiser person. Don't give up on the first try and realize that there are going to be a dozen people that are going to try and hold you back but you just have to know in your heart what you want to do and then follow your heart. Also, nothing not even a sickness can hold you back. It may have taken over the majority of your life but it doesn't have to contunine too, YOU TAKE CONTROL. Even if you don't have family support, you can still accomplish anything on your own. Last but not least, whatever you can dream, can become reality.

Patrice

Girl Patrice there's no time for games. Once you are in the real world there isn't any returning. Either you're going to school or you 're going to work. You know your parent aren't going to play the radio with you. They want you to become a somebody. That they can be proud of. Besides life is rough on it's own. So make the GPA that would guarantee you into that prestious university or college you want to attend. Your future is bright and don't give up your light for a misily kiss goodnight. You don't have time for maybes. You need something written in stone.

Rakeba

If I could go back as a high school senior I would have did so many things different. First off I would have encouraged myself to maintain a high GPA and also a high SAT score. In high school I made alot of mistakes that I wish I could take back, I wish I would have been more focused and thought about my future more. But being that I didnt really have a supportive parent it made it kind of hard to encourage myself. I just wish my mother wouldnt have given me so much freedom and been there to talk and really stay on me about getting good grades. High school students need to know that high school is very important because its the first step in starting a successful career. If I would have known the things I know now I believe I would have been able to be accepted in my first choice of college and not have had to fall for my back-up school. Now im encouraging myself more because I want to accomplish all my goals I set out so that I may have a bright future.

Jonathan

If I could go back in time and give myself advice the first thing I would instill in my past self would be the trait of self discipline and focus. One of the largest differences from high school to college is the lack of those people with positive intentions that continue to help and push you in the right direction. With the creation of self discipline as well focus at a younger age one can see further success in college then one who has found those traits to be necessary for success at a later age or time period. The next thing I would instill in my past self would be the trait of finding people with good intentions. In life it is far to easy to find people who have personal agendas which include damaging others priorities to fufill their own. Once one learns how to find people with positive intentions they can help create a college environment in which they are surrounded by people willing to help them as well as create positive opportunities for them.

Phillip

I would tell myself to get a journal and write down all of my goals, long and short term, and ways to achieve them. In that journal would also be a list of priorities, and would encourage myself to look at them often. I would tell myself that its not going to be easy, but to consider those that worked hard for me to be able to take advantage of educational opportunity today. I would remind myself that the world is full of people that eat, dress, think, pray, act, and look different than myself and to appreciate our differences. I would encourage myself to take adavantage of my on-campus resources, those that are academic and otherwise, because my tuition has been pre-paid whether I use them or not. I would remind myself that my word and reputation are two of the most important things. Being a man of my word and displaying professionalism is mediocre. I would remind myself that everytime I go somewhere, that I need to leave a mark, perhaps by autographing my work with excellence. Lastly, I would tell myself to treat everyone with even more respect than I would expect.

Anisha

If i could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would warn myself about the work over load. Back when I was in high school, I had terrible study habits. I would always wait until the last minute to complete assignments and study for tests. All the teachers would warn us that once we came to college, we would have to develop better studying techniques. At first I used to think "I will do just fine with the study habits I have now. I have done rather well by cramming, so it should work when I get to college." Huge mistake! I am only a college freshman and i just completed my first semester of the 2009-2010 school year and already I feel like I have been hit with a huge work overload. In the beginning I tried to do the whole "wait-until-the-last-minute/cramming" thing, and quickly I began to fall behind. I thought I could do it like I did in high school, but I was completely wrong. Around the middle of the semester I began to change my ways for the better.

lanee

the advice that i would give myself would be to practice not procrastinating. college is about time management and if you dont manage your time you will not suceed. as yuou get older time becomes your best-friend so why not practice now. I would also inform myself on having proper communication skills. These skills are important because you may have to communicate with people who are in higher positions in order to recieve the help u need. Lastly I would remind myself that , your not goin to automatically become smarter during your first year in college. As time goes by you will see the changes, and hopefully use those skills as you succeed on the next level.

Ian

If I had the chane to go back in time, the best advice I would give myself is to keep my grade point average above a 3.0 and apply for scholarships earlier than what I did. I would tell myself that college life is what you make it, and i have the chance to make it enjoyable and keep my grades up. I would also tell myself about the costs of tuition and payments that would have to be made on time. Times are not as easy as they were when I was growing up and money is a major issue with the family. These are the key things i would tell myself if given the chance to go back in time and talk with myself.

Shanique

Shanique, college will be a totally different experience. It will be nothing like highschool. For one thing highschool was free, college is not. Make sure you apply for as many scholarships and or grants you can get your hands on because you never know what may happen finacially in the future. Your mother is a single mom and by applying for these scholarships you will have helped her out a lot. i think you should put a little more effort into your AP statistics class, yes it is a very difficult class, but college is all about GPA's and right now its good that you have a 3.1, but if you get a 3.5 by the time graduation comes you will be considerd for the presidential or provo scholarship and this way your four years at state will be free because they will pay for the full four years. also another thing try retaking your SAT the higher score you get the more money you get for school. good luck and have a wonderful senior year.

Michael

I would tell my self to sudy harder because college is not a joke. Yes high school is easier, but when you get to college its harder. The professors do not play. If you dont turn in your work on tme, then you will get a zero on that assignment. I will tell my self to get a job and save up money. Even though the Finical Aid will cover the cost, you still need to have money saved up for a "rainy day."

Elliot

If I had the chance to go back and talk to myself as a high school senior I would tell myself to do three things; one look into more than one major, two fill out more scholarships and last but surely not least try to find time to enjoy your senior year. If I would have know this things as a senior in high school I believe that freshman year would be different because I would have spend least time trying to find a major that fit me, does college fit me, how am I going to pay for it and more time enjoying my senior in high school while still working hard. Even though I found the rite college for me I still wonder from time to time how things would have been I would have took time out to breath for my senior year and sit back and think of all the things that goes in to being a college freshman. Still at the end of the day I?m truly happy with the choice I made during my senior year and I would not feel right if I had the chance to go back and change them.

Shonnika

If I could go back to high school and talk to myself when I was a senior I would definitely tell myself to apply for all the scholarships possible no matter if they require an essay or not. Paying for college is very expensive. I would also tell myself not to take for granted the free books we recieved in high school because books are expensive and vital to passing courses when you are a college student. Another advice would be to start saving immediately. You are on your own in college so things are liable to happen so it is good to be prepared. I would also tell myself to depend on no one but yourself. Getting up for classes and school is no longer mommy's job. It is your responsibility to wake YOURSELF up and go to class. Last but not least, I would tell myself to wake up and life is no longer a game. This is the real world and what ever you want out of life depends on what you do in college and what you make of it. You can go to college for all the wrong reasons or you can succeed.

Shanell

If I could go back I would tell myself alot. I think I understood college life based off of what other people that were in college were saying. They were telling me what was best for them while they were in college and I took the information in thinking it would be the best for me when it wasn't. I would just tell myself to be better prepared and really listen to what the teachers are telling you because they were not lieing. Alot of people go into college thinking its easy and it can be but it takes alot of responsibility to handle all that college gives you. So my best advice would be to do whats best for you, stay focused, work hard because all the barely passing in high school doesn't cut it in college!

Shannon

The advice that I would give myself as a high school senior would be to believe in myself no matter what. College is full of oppurtunity and growth. As long as you stay true to yourself and be open to new possibilities, then college can be a great experience. College shows you a dose of the real world. People will try to bring you down as well as uplift you. You have to be confident in yourself and believe that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. As a high school senior, you may think college is going to overwhelm you and you may have doubts. But, there are thousands of other students that feel the same way. When you feel you are alone, there are other people that feel the same which means you are together. So with that being said, be yourself and believe that you can do whatever you dream.

Domonique

I would tell myself to go to the school the focuses more on Hospitality than going to an VSU, to be better prepared and that I could always pledge at another college considering the college doesnt have what I want.

Chontyce

If i could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would encourage myself to do more scholarships. Scholarships are so important because it makes college life less stressful. To make the college life an easier transition it is good to have a lot of friends. Its not good to be by yourself because you will often miss home, become miserable and want to go home a lot. If you go home a lot you will miss out on the "college experience" which is balancing your personal life or interests (sports, friends, partying, etc.) with your school work. I would also tell myself to don't loose focus of the reason of going to school because a lot of college freshmen often loose that focus. It's important to stay focused because once you loose your focus its hard to get it back and your grades may slip and its hard to pull them back up.

Bianca

save up more money

Alantay

You might come in shy and think you wont make any friends but you will. Ypu might not be an outgoing person but you will become one by joining the many different groups and organizations that school has to offer. There will be alot of parties but you must prioritize and make sure your work is done. You might not get A's in all your classes so don't stress yourself. You might not make honor roll every semester but there will be a chance for you to make the deans list at least once. Some days you might feel that you can do it anymore but you have to think long term. Once you graduate and go on to become a doctor you will look back and thank yourself for pushing yourself to graduate.

Quaneshia

I would tell myself to get ready to be a big girl. I'm be miles away from my parents so i need to stay focus and be safe. Work hard for what i want in life and make sure i continue to study because i'm a have to do everything for myself no more turning in late work. To be prepared for this new transition and grow a back bone no more mama coming to save the day i'm an adult now i have to do it for myself.

Franklin

I would tell my self make sure all of your information is correct and stay on top of your scholarships

Rebecca

I really wouldn't have to make the trip back to talk to myself because it was a very easy transition. Virginia State University made it very easy for me and they help me get everything I needed situated. I learned the ropes very quick & easy. So I am going to change the question to why I believe I should win. I believe that I should win because I work really hard and it would be greatly appreciated if I could take out one or two less loans, to pay for my education. It was an easy transition but finding the money to pay for it is a pain. Especially when you have to pay for it your self and your family will not help you. But I know that I will benefit from this education in the end, so I do my best. Thank you so much for the opportunity.

Theodore

just to keep it simple, stay focused and dont let anyone try to stop you

Tierra

Dear Tierra, I know you are about to embark on a new journey. This next phase of your life is very important as you will be growing into an adult and will no doubt encounter some obstacles. Be prepared to face them with a strong heart and always stay focused on your success. Make sure that all of the decisions that you make are ones that will benefit you now and in your future; ones that will get you to the next level in your life. Learn as much as you can learn, but remember that good grades aren't the only thing that you will need once you graduate. Be proactive before you graduate and really think about what direction you want your life to take post graduation. Get involved in as many things as possible and don't be afraid of anything. You are strong and extremely determined to do well, and you will, no matter how long it may take. But Tierra, as serious as life can be, college is not just about studying and straight A's. Remember to have fun, enjoy yourself and live your life. With love always, Your future self

LaNeil

Stay focused and try to balance parties with homework better

Elise

Go to different campus before choosing a school.

Tierney

Parents and future college graduates, in order to make the most of your college experience you must be mindful of the career path you want to take, and make sure that the university offers the specific field you are interested in. Once you are accepted, it is imperative to stay focused and have essential time-management skills; one most prioritize no matter what, without being caught up in less-important things. In addition, one must make short-term and long-term goals to allow him or her to stay driven. The most important key to remember is to work first, play later. There is no need to procrastinate when your education on the line. Remember to shoot for the moon to land among the stars!

Alyssa

pick what is best for you. Try to get out of your comfort zone. Try new things but not things that will harm you. Be safe and look at your surrondings. Try to join organization and study study study.

Alexis

I would say do your research on the school. Make sure you know how much the school you want to go to cost and be aware that tuition may go up each year so you have to be prepared for that also. Also make sure you keep all reciepts and documentations from the school. Everyone makes mistakes and it seems that colleges make the most when it comes to money! To parents, make sure your child stays focus and check up on your child once in a while, maybe not everyday but every other day or two. It might seem smothering but ask your child questions, "What are you studying in class now"? "How did you do on your last test"? To students, make sure you dont get to caught up in the social life to the point where you cant manage time for school work. Make charts if necessary, it will come in handy, in college there is alot of time, spend it wisely. And to both, make sure at orientation you ask questions you will find out alot of interesting facts. Make the best of you college life, they are the best years of life. TRUST ME!

David

First your child should be self directed let them make their own decisions and be the best support group that you can be for them. It is their life and a child entering college knows that they want better for themselves all they need is a little reassurance that the decision is perfect for them. You don't want them questioning themselves whether or not it is really their choice to attend a college or university. Make sure that your child has a specific goal in mind, many students enter college not knowing what they want to do with their lives and that just makes it more stressful. Find a college or university that gives you plenty of options and also challenges them. Most importantly make sure your child finds a comfortable environment where you think they will be challenged and come out successful. The choice that your child makes is the choice that will affect them for the rest of their life and yours. Be certain that they know what they want to do with their life will make the whole process smoother for everyone involved.

Ta'Keisha

-Go and visit the campus -speak with other students that already attend so that you can gather many different views of the school!

Ashley

As a Student Ambassador at my school, I try to inform prospective students and their parents that they should always weigh their options. Visiting all of the schools they are considering should always be what helps them decide which school is right for them. These visits always give the student the "this is it for me" feeling that they need.

Eric

You don't neccessarily have find the right college in order for it to be the right one for you. I know when I first attended school, I wasn't too sure if i wanted to stay. After a while, i adjusted to the settings and it turned out that I liked the school a lot . As long as you can find the things that make it worth your while , it can be the right college for you .

Cameron

College is a life changing experience, so a student has to choose the right school. Many factors go into college, like cost of attendance, academic competitiveness, location, student body and alumni achievement. Another factor is the ability of the school to be a community environment. A student should get along with his or her classmates and feel welcomed because these are the people they will be spending the next four years with. They should also be satisfied with instructors. It feels nice to walk into a classroom knowing the professor has you as a top priority. If a student already has a school in mind, they should visit the institution, examine the site and become familiar with the students and faculty. And the student must listen to advice given from their parents; the school chosen may decide the rest of someone?s life as far as potential goes, it is important to have outside opinions. Lastly, to make the most of a college experience the student must engage in campus activities, join organizations, and make friends, there is nothing worse than being an isolated hermit trapped in a dorm room all day.

Frank

Plan ahead and have at least 3 colleges in mind. Also visit each so you and your child could get the right feel of the campus environment

Chanelle

I would advise them to start researching colleges as soon as the student enters high school. They shouldn't rely solely on financial aid provided by the school, even if the school has promised to cover the entire tuition. Apply for outside scholarships as well.

Dominique

The advice I would give prospective college students and parents would be to find a college that is safe, affordable, and academically focused. They should make sure that the schools faculty has the students best interest at heart and be willing to help them. Also, they should be mindful of their advisor and monitor their progress and keep track of their courses. Assuming that they have a list of things they would like the college to have, they should compare colleges and their checklist and pick the one that has the most thngs in common witht their personal check list.

Ariel

sitting in the room during orientation there was such a positive ora that surrounded me. i felt as they accepted me for who i was without knowing me. when looking for a school for your child this is a great factor. i know that educational value, and location also weighs in but peace of mind knowing your child is comfortable where they are at helps you sleep at night. when a child is uncomfortable in their environment they tend to reject it. rejecting their educational environment reflects on their grades...then evrything goes down hill from there. so just make sure your child is comfortable in their environment.

Teaira

when finding the right college the best thing to do is go look at the campus first. looking at the campus helps determine how comfortable you may actually feel. college is what you make it, if you dont do anything you may not like it, but if you go out and interact with the other students in the school and doing activities you will enjoy the college experience and it will go by so quickly. Blink and you may miss it.

BRITTANY

WORK HARD, MAKE WISE CHOOICES, CHOOSE YOUR FRIENDS CAREFULLY. STAY IN CHURCH , KEEP COPIES OF EVERYTHING.

Courtney

Don't judge a book by it's cover. How the school may seem when you visit may either be true or false. There isn't a garuantee that the school is the best choice, but just make the best of your option and learn from it.

christa

When you are a senior in high school and its getting close to decision time, students and parents should take proper precautions and should be sure that this school is right for them. A college tour would be highly suggested because you dont want to attend a college primarly based on there popularity and or academic successes. You need to be sure that the school is right for u because this will be home away from home for the next 4+ years. Talking to alumni is also a good idea because all schools try come off as being the best choice, but someone who has actually expirenced the college life at this particular facility will deffinately be able to honestly respond to all the questions you need answered. Making the most out of the college expierence is also very important. We all know that you go to school to further your education, Yet it is also an opportunity for growth. These next four years charish every moment because this part of your life only comes around once. Open up, meet new people, get out of your normal routine and enjoy this opportuinty before you. God Bless and Good Luck!
