What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Domonique

If I could give advice to my highschool self I would tell myself to take school more seriously now. By me saying this I would do things more earlier and work way more to get into a better school. The college life is not a game here you really need to stay focus on your goal in college which to earn a degree. Do not wait to do an assingment on the the last day and most importantly don't let your so called "friends" get in the way of your studies be aware of the bad and good. The transiton here in college will be a little stressful not having your parents to guide you will be hard but be ready for everything that comes your way. Also do not assume that your teachers will hold your hand your an adult here so start being one now before you step on campus.

There is no rush! Take your time, weigh your options. A four year college is not the only way to success. There are internships, there is community college, there is AmericCorps, and there are apprenticeship programs. Researching your options and being knowledgeable about your choices can save you a lot of time and money in the long run. It's okay if you don't know what you want to do yet. Don't hesistate to slow down and experiment with different routes. Do some shadowing. Volunteer. Ask around. Be willing to go to work temporarily before you start any more education. Experience and getting your feet wet is truly the best way to figure out what you want to do, without burdening yourself or your parents with unnecessary college expenses. Also, when you graduate, it will be good to have some experience already under your belt because that's what employers look for. So use your summers wisely.

If I could talk to myself as a high school senior, one of the first things I would tell myself is to put friends second and SCHOOL FIRST! Though a social life seems important now, I can honestly say that it isn't; friends will always be around. My social life tended to be more important than getting my education and believe me when I say it was a horrible choice to make.

Brea

The advice I would give myself as a high school senior would be , to be more serious. Apply for more scholarships, save money up, stop fooling around and listening to my peers who aren't on the same level as me. Focus on myself, focus on my grades, focus on what'll get me further in life. College is very hard and it's a wake up call to those who slacked off in high school. It's a challenge in which you have to be focused and know what your goals are. I would also tell myself to keep my head up, don't follow behind nobody. I hold the key to my own success. Other people just want to see me fail.

Adrianne

If i could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself do the research on the school that I plan on attending. Find out if they have activities you want to participate in. See do they offer your major. Go visit the school before you make any decisions and know they school history. It's not like high school, there's things that you will experience that will change your life completely. Get to know your surrounding because your parents can't get to you as fast being almost two hours away. College will test your strengths and abilities. You will encounter alot of different people from all over. The last thing I would say is watch who you can trust and be active at the school. You meet new people and break you out of being shy. It will help keep you busy because it's what you make of it.

The advice i would give myself is that even though i have excelled or have failed as a high school senior, i'm in college and i have to knuckle down, hit the books, not think about girls, parties, smoking, or anything. Even though i'm a part of the college life and make the transition, i have to keep in my mind that i'm here at this prestigious university to learn everything i need to know and to also have fun. Back to when i was a high school senior, it was the best fun of my life. Me and all of my friends were almost reaching prom and graduation. Even though i had a lot of friends in the last years of my high school career, it almost felt like we was going our separate ways already. At graduation, everybody was happy to walk across the stage, get the diploma, and it felt like on that day that the people who said we wasn't going to amount to anything, but we proved them wrong anywhere. In college, the advice i want to give is to keep myself and stay in the books.

Dhahran

I would go back and tell myself to remove procastination from my life, have fun but be aware of the oppurtunities that dissapear within the blink of an eye, such as scholaships, grants, and work study to help pay tuition. Explaining everything my family has pushed on me is in fact great for my future, but I would put it in a away only myself would understand because I then know the ak would be completed. Also I would go back and psuh myself to study as a great instead of as a good/satisfactory student. time and dedication brings happiness and less worries, as my French Professor would say "Heaven Helps Those Who Help Themselves." My interpretation of wat he meant is blessings come with hardwork as myself in the past had a simialr idea, the past myself would undestand if I speak to him with the quote my professor had spoken.

Maheteme

Knowing what I know now, the advice I would give myself would be to be more open to change and new experiences. Coming into college, I had the ill-advised mentality that I'm perfect the way I am and that I don't need to be influenced by the people and the atmosphere around me. This mind-set took away from some of the learning experiences I needed to have my freshman year. I shied away from getting out of my comfort zone and I wasn't able to push my boundary intellectually as well as emotionally. I see now that the best way to learn in life is to try new things yourself and learn from the mistakes and experiences you come-across.

Cassandra

I would tell myself that college is what i though it would always be, but that i should try and take some college credit coruses and try and be able to transferr them to my college. But also to enjoy life because it gose by fast. Try and make your dreams come true as much as you can. Dont mess around, study because if your use to slacking off and studying the night before the exam you wont pass. You need to come up with studying methods and maybe even start a study group. But in this group you need to make sure the pepole in it are there to learn and not mess around. Try not to go out every day and weekend. You need to balance your studying time, shopping time, even fun time. Then if you still dont understand dont be afraid to ask questions in class or even go to your teacher after and ask for one on one time. Dont think that just because you ask a question makes you stupied it makes you smarter in life. Be brave and ask because maybe half the class wont understand the problem as well and needs help.

In high school I only cared that the school was close, and not too big. If I could go back I might encourage myself to go to a college in another city, just because I've never been outside Richmond before. As far as transitioning, it wasn't a big transition for me. I chose a major I love, and I've always been a good student. Virginia Union may not be as flashy as some other schools, but I really feel like my teachers are passionate in what they teach and they care about me. I think I made the right choice, but I'd definantly tell myself to save up some money for future book expenses.

Jacqueline

If I could go back in time, I would tell my high school self that going to school with two kids is a struggle. I would warn my past self that as soon as you graduate go straight to college. I would tell myself don't wait too late and don't get involve with these two people because they will hold you back. I would tell my future self that college will be even harder if you wait and especially when you have children. I would warn my past self of the crashing of the economy and how bad it will get so go to school now and get it overwith. I would look into her eyes and shake her and tell her that before you go out partying and enjoying life get an education first. Don't listen to any false hopes because at the end of the day all you will have is you. I would scream at myself and make her apply to different colleges and pell grants so that she will not have to struggle in the future. I would repeat these words over and over go to college because it will benefit you.

Shenna

If I was to go back in time the advice I would give myself would be to apply myself in every thing that I put my mind to. The world is filled with so many great oppurnities. Although, the possibilities are endless you can choose any career field you like. Once youve put forth your best the outcome would be so worth it. Your future starts now ! The world is geared towards education and skills. If you want to suceed you need to obtian all the knowledge you can towards your career field. The education will then help you gain the skills needed to perform in your career field.

chris

When I was young i wasn't always the best student i didn't take alot of things seriously. When i was in school I played alot in school cause i didn't think it was that important to get good grades and how it can hurt your future. If i was younger i would say I need to pay more attention in class and learn everything I can cause school is very important so i would be able to go to a decent college. The second thing I need to tell myself to go to straight to college after school and make sure i go to college after school while everything is fresh.

Edna

What I would tell my self about college and making the transition would be eventually go for it. But for right now have fun go out break the rules. Because you might as well. The straight and narrow may lead you down the right path but the whole rest of your life will be filled with only if I'd's. So have fun be free because some college will take you if you can afford the tuition. Weather you have a 4.0 GPA or a 2.0 GPA. So now belive it or not is the very best time of your life so live a little and dont squander it because now is the best time of your life. Honey it is all down hill from here.

Self At the age of seventeen staying in school was not my option, so and going to college now it will pay off in the long run in life. I wish I had listened to my parents more. I did not, but they knew more than me because there were the adults. Having a career will last in the long run in life, as I can see this now. Now later on in my life I understanding my parents and teachers was right, but then I just wanted to finish high school and get a job. I have had so many jobs in my life time. So now I am older, enough is enough. Time for me to go back to school and get a career for myself. Now here I am taken Pharmacy Tech. Mrs. Wilson here at RSHT is a great listener she really help me with her great personality and smile, she made me feel so love to come back to school. Now I am here and ready to learn as much as I can and do my best to start my career in Pharmacy Tech so far having a wonderful teacher as well name Mrs. Mason

I would have said to try hardrer and to study more. I would have went and spoke to the gudience people and applied for a diffferent colleges and visted them. Thats a majot regreat because i wanted to see what the experience of going to a four year college and living in the dorm rooms would be like. Tell myself that as you were worried about hanging out and being ok with getting "c" but to realize how important every grade was. I didnt realize that even in the ninth grade they look at your grades and attendence for all four years. I would have perticapiated i n more school activities because it looks good on your college application. I would have told myself tthat going to college starts your life and career and how very important it is to start your life and to have direction and focus on the goals in life, seeing the "bigger picture" and focus on not just today and this week but my life and the future and have more faith that i can do anything i put my mind to.

Brianna

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, it would to be great. I would tell myself that I need to focus more on my actual school work intead of worrying about everything else, I need to start thinking about what I want to do with my life, and I would also tell myself I need to start applying for colleges. During high school I thought I could do whatever I wanted and still do good in school. I never knew what I wanted to do and I never even thought about it. I never knew college was hard to get in to and you needed a good gpa to get in. I always got in trouble and I was only worried about having fun with my friend and partying. That resulted in me barely graduating. If i could go back, I would tell myself that going to parties and having fun can definitely wait and that I need to focus on school work and getting good grades so it would be easier for me to go to school when i graduated.

Mesha

As as high school senior you are faced with so many decisions to make. Going to college is a big step but also very excing for most students. The main thought on your mind is staying on campus and feeling like a grown up. You have to rememer your reason why you are attteding the school of your choice. Of course its only traditional to go to college that august after you graduate but if you are not ready, just hold out and go when you are prepared. Not saying that you will regret going but you will be upset knowing that you were held back because it just was not the right time. Education is very important and plays a major role in your life.....Just always remember it your future so choose wisely and dont be discouraged.

Tiesha

As a youge adult, like most people my age, once I reached senior year all I could think about is how much longer till graduation. Through my high school years I was I wounderful student, thanks to my parents who expected nothing but the best. Awear that I had gotten the awards, the good grades, and the credits i need with the exception of a few, i was ready to leave high school and start my life as a college student. I took the least amount of classes allowed and went home early everyday, which was fine to me at the time. Now that I have graduated I look back at my senior year and realize I shouldn't have taken the easy way out my senior year and got all the knowledge that I could've gained from high school. If I could go back in time I would tell myself to stay in for the long run, your learning is not over yet. then when I came to college I could've had more knowledge about not only book work but maybe even more life lessons to make my transition more smoother from high school to college.

Mary

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior the first thing I would tell myself is how important your education is and to learn and become as knowledgeable as you can and never stop learning. As a single parent of two, I only wish I realized then what I know now. My oldest daughter has encouraged me to go be all I can be. She has made a big impression on my heart as she worked very hard to be what she is today and now I am following her footsteps. Education as I see it now is one of the most important things in life and that would be the very first thing that I would tell myself. I am 42 years old and learning what I have now in three weeks has been very enjoyable, and I feel as though my brain is absorbing information like it was a sponge. Attending college now and realizing how important it is only makes me want to go back to that High School girl and say go and be all that you can be because it is very important and will be rewarding.

Amanda

If I could go back and tell myself some things on the future of going to college I think I would have to say that I should have done this sooner then I am now. For the fact I have been graduated from high school for 5 year now. I would have told myself to wait and have kids. But mistakes happen and its alright. I would have better prepared myself for the steps to come and getting the knowladge that I needed about going back to school. It is a big tep in your life that you have to better prepare for and think of ahead of time to know what it is that you want to do for the future. I wish I would have put better thought into college when I was in high school and what I wanted for my future.

Sarah

If I could go back in time and talk to myself about college, I would tell myself to do hardier in my senior year. My senior year was very laid back and I slacked off. Some people say college is not right for them, but in the world today people need a good education. I would have tried hardier in high school to get scholarships to go to a four year college. College is nothing like high school. Its a time to be independent and no one is going to hold your hand anymore like high school. I would tell myself to fill out scholarship forms and make sure I make the deadline for any scholarship due. Community college is not a bad thing to go to, but a four year college away from home would have been better for me. I would not have went to the community college i had went to before RSHT because they try to be a four year college and not focus on the important thing. Which was me and all the other students. I would inform myself about the school I'm going to now because it is a wonderful school.

Elizabeth

If I could go back in time and advise myself about the process of college, I would be more aware of the steps I had available. I would have been more aware of the proper dates of enrollment and during which time I could have registered as a concurrent enrolled student. Asking, understanding, and taking action is the first thing that I would advise myself to do. The entire procedure of getting into college and working through it is something that counselors are wonderfully amazing at advising students about. To not shy away even if a question seems silly, it clears your mind to get that question out of your head. Do not wait until the last moment to get informed or until senior year in high school to apply for college, it is best to begin the process as soon as possible. Furthermore, do not wait for others to do what you have to do because only you can take those steps. Visit as many colleges as you wish, to see which ones offer the major of your choice. Lastly, I would advise myself to take the required courses while still in high school, because time never goes back.

MARY

First of all I would Have done better in High School, as far as my grades, although I made good grades. I would have study harder to prepare myself for a career and would have research different schools and found out more about grants and fiancial assistance. You see I came from a family with 7 others sibblings and money was very tight. My family was not college graduates, so they did not talk to us about it , instead they got us thru high school and wanted us to get jobs to take care of ourself. I did go to a trade school and took a trade in the medical field. I wanted to continue my education but I fell in love and had a beautiful daughter, who did go to college and is doing well. I,m in college now and I feel very good about furthering my education , but like before money is still tight because I only work a part time job. But I am not going to let this keep me from my dream this time. I AM GOING TO BE ALL I CAN.

Rebecca

If I could go back to being a high school senior i would had taken the time and research going to college and starting a career. I started college got sidetrack and went a diffrent path. Thought about going back in my early 20's but didnt. had children and justed worked. Didnt experience college life and what it had to offer. If i had the knowledge to no how far going to college would benifit me. Would had finish school by now and moved on to a career. But now im in school its hard but i am juggling school and work with kids. Who knew that thinking that i am young i have plenty of time. But time goes so quickly and then you realize you have wasted so much time not learning but it is never to late to go back and I am. Would advise any high school senior to explore college life because i wish i had. Its a slow process but i am getting the skills i need to move on to bigger and better things. I am glad i decided to go back and learn and better myself and to make more money.

Melissa

The best advice I think I could give would be to stay on top of your assignments. Teachers will give you many assignments often with them due at different times. It is extremely important to use you time wisely and not wait until the last minute to complete them. If you don't learn to budget your time well, you will find yourself behind. In the long run could cause you to have poor grades.

Ina

It's 1977, my future is in front of me. I just graduated from high school and was fortunate enough to have a trust fund to be able to attend college. I attended Ferrum College from 1977-1979 and graduated with an Associate in Science degree. I should have continued with college and earned my Bachelor's Degree. However, life got the way. I have aways wanted to go back to school and now I have the opportunity. I am enrolled at RSHT in Medical Billing and Coding and I feel that I am going in the right direction.

Catherine

If I could go back to talk to myself as a high school senior I would tell myself to not worry so much about things that don't really matter and focus on the things that do. I would also tell myself to not expect everything to be perfect. Shortly after high school I had a child and I often got very overwhelmed and stressed out because of all the chaos. I would certainly like to go back and tell myself to not be so concerned with making everything perfect and just enjoy life. Sometimes I feel that I missed out on some fun times because I got too stressed out over things that I should't have. However, I am very happy with the way my life is now and am very eager to finish school and be a certified medical biller and coder. School is very expensive but I believe that if I work hard I will get through it and it will have all been worth it in the end.

LaShonda

As a high school senior, I was shy, intelligent, caring, and friendly. I was a member of the DECA, Library, Multicultural, and SADD club and on the Drill Team (dance squad). However, I was also pregnant. Before this, my intentions were quite clear: finish my fourth year dancing, graduate with my class, and attend VA Tech. However, when your stomach is enormous, it's hard to fit into any uniform, let alone perform. So I quit. I did graduate with my class, but VT wasn't an option. If I could give myself advice, it would be to follow my dreams of attending college right after high school. The transition of meeting new people, making new friends, and even learning new things would have been much easier. As an adult, you are already set in your ways, it can sometimes be hard to get back into the groove of being in a school setting, and even harder to try new experiences. Not to mention balancing school with work and family. I would advise myself to consider all possible options that would have allowed me to go to VT in order to give myself and my child a better life.

Vanessa

If i could go back in time i would tell myself to learn how to fully study and not cram. I also would tell myself to learn how to balance my time and my life because i now find myself either being all studies and no down time or to much down time and not enough studying so i would learn how to manage my time better. I also would make sure i visit the campus i plan on choosing and not just talk to faculty but ask students what they feel about the campus. I would also make sure i came into college strong so it wouldnt be so hard to catch up and i would have been more social because in college its all about networking and meeting new people.

Jaleesa

I have recieved continued support from the staff of VUU, which helps me to stay on track and never slip up in the negativity that may come my way. I have realized that friends are not an option for me anymore, i rather be a nerd in stick to my books. My college experience has been valuable to me because it has helped me to become an independent student and to handle my business no matter how much people may look at me funny. I have realized that god has choosen me to be a leader and that is what i am going to do. Being that i am very determined i have choosen to stay focus because my future here is just the beginning and i will never give up!

Erin

My college experience is something that I take very seriously. So far it has been amazing. I am on the right path i need to be on to get to where I want to go in life. My classes have taught me so much and have opened me up to new things. I plan on majoring in Journalism and Broadcast Journalism and I have learned so much about the subjects in the past couple of months. I feel like all my classes offer so much and I am so gratful to have to opportunity to attend college. I'm working hard and doing the best I can in school because I know where I want to be in the next couple of years and college is the first step to success. I am excited and looking forward to so many new experiences in the future.

Marcus

I have gotten out of my college experience that, college is what a students makes of it. Some classes can be early and some can be late- but it is always good to be on time for a time. Also, it is very helpful to ask questions to the professor. The best experience I have gotten out is that getting tutored is okay. Even when a student is doing good in the class- its still very helpful to get tutored to make sure you learn and get the material. The surroundings around Virginia Unio University is amazing because there are so many colleges, college students, restuarants, and site-see. I could not have asked for a better University, location, and diversity.

courtney

Going off to college shows that you care about your future and want to better yourself as a person. College help students to explore their options and making the right choice for a career opportunity. My greatest fear is failing and being a disappointment to my family, I wanna be role model for the younger generation and let them know that they can make their dreams come true also. College help me to expand my knowledge, meet new people and making a connection with my professors. I value this opportunity because once graduation approaches, jobs will be lined up for me

Allison

it is my first year i havent started yet.

orlando

it has been great, its more than what i thaught it would be. i have grasp so much knoledge on things that i didnt know about. the experience i have got is i learnt how to depend on my self and that u have to do what u have to, to succeed in life and to be a knoledgeable ypung man with a bright future.

Jaleesa

It was a huge change and experience to be on your own and be independent. But, you should really focus on your grades, like really focus on them because it does affect you when you try to get accepted. I also really would give advice to just get prepared to not see your parents and immediate family for a while because if you are far away from home, it could be difficult for your parents to come see you so cherish the holidays and breaks that you do have with them. Making the transition is really difficult just because we never know what to expect cause each experience for each person is different and really challegning. Just be moe mature and try to no fall to anything you don't want yourself to get into, and make some friends. Friends are your anchor when i comes to your support next to your parents.

Corey

Where do I begin? There are so many things of which I would advise my former self if I were afforded the opportunity to visit myself as an innocent, unsuspecting high school Senior. I had no idea that my future would ultimately be determined by the University in which I chose to matriculate

lakeshia

i waould tell the high school seniors that college life is not just about partying and having fun. its about learning and becoming something of urself. so if you dont want to do enough with urself dont even come to college bicause you be waisting your money.

Jermaine

Do not party too much. Make sure your grades are good before you go out to party and have fun. Don't wait until the last minute to do your work, get right to it.

Bre'Ana

If I could go back and talk to myself as if I was a high school senior, knowing what I know about college life and making a transition, i would give the advice that college is all what you can expect and more; its what you make of it. College life gives me a since of pride and confidence that I cannot gain anywhere else. You should have an open mind about any and everything. You meet people from all over the world. and make great friends for a life time. You get a taste of life within life. College not only is a great place to be to further your education, but its a place that molds you into the person your going to be for the rest of your life. Transitioning to a college schedule is difficult to some and easy to others. For me, it was mild. As long as you ask the right people the right questions, they have no problem helping. College makes me look at life as it can never can be planned but always be available for it. Its ok to set limits but never allow someone else to set them for you.

brenda

i would tell myself not to play around with my education because its the only thing thats going to get me far in life.

Lucy

If I could go back,I would have made time to go out of state and go on college tours and visit the schools I was accepted to as well as do my applications a little earlier so I cud have had the time to visit some of the schools I was accepted to, besides going to college fairs having the chance to visit schools out of state would have been good as well. I realized if you do well in school there is plenty of oppurtunites out there for you, and free money as well as being active in extracuricular activies, and having your personal talents that can also help provide money for you in school. So basically I would tell myself make sure i stay focused and make good grades or improve on my grades and dont let procastanation or laziness get in the way of my academics. The second thing I would tell myself is if i have the opportunity to travel out of state to visit colleges, try and take the opportunity if i can.

dashia

I feel as though i have done agreat job in college and have no regretsso i wouldnt have any advice for myself in high school.

Wesley

I would caution myself to slow down and listen to what my parents, older siblings, and friends who are current students in college had to say about the life and transition. I would warn myself that college isn't what it is portrayed to be in the movies it's not a party, it's your life. I would reasure myself that while it's alright to have fun that studying and getting my homework done is priority number one. I would make sure that I knew that the decisions I made while attending college would have a definite impact on how my life is going to turn out.

Lynn

To research colleges more throuughly before making a final decision.

Tiasha

When looking for a school make sure you got to a school where your not just a number and a face in the clouds but a name and a student that wants to make it in life. Stay focus on your goals and always do your reseach on what career/major you want and the school that offers that cousre.

Rodney

DO NOT GO TO A SCHOOL JUST BECAUSE ITS BIG AND THE POPULATION IS BIG AND WELL KNOWN. GO TO A SCHOOL THAT YOU FIT INTO AND FEEL COMFORTABLE AROUND YOU. BIG SCHOOL YOU ARE NOTHING BUT A NUMBER, BUT AT A SMALL SCHOOL YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE

I believe that if you are a student, you should research different schools, compare all schools, and really think of what is important to you, whether it be class size, location, programs offered, or extra curicular activities. The school should be right for you. Also, college is an experience all your own and you have to make it the best for yourself. In addition, to all parents who have children about to or attending college, please let them have their own dreams, follow their own paths, and stamp their own footprints. I'm just saying there is already alot of pressure on us as young adults without having the added stress of living up to the standards that are seemingly unabtainable.
