What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

David Brinkley once said, "a successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him. " The tools that the professors at Virginia Wesleyan College provide to you will ease all of the fears that you have about college. Everything that you have endured through high school has prepared you for success in college. If you ever have any problems in a class, do not hesitate to talk to your professors. They are here to help you succeed and I have not met a single professor on campus that will turn a student away. Most importantly, college is meant to be full of learning along with fun. Do not be afraid to express yourself and make friends. Everyone here is very accepting.

I would tell myself to keep doing what you are doing. Stay focus, continue to keep God first and you will excel. Stay motivated, study more and challenge yourself. Things may get hard and get rough, but if you pay now, you can play later like dad always say. I would encourage myself even more to say to hang in there and the same strength that I used in high school to graduate, I will need greater strength to use to put towards college. There may be a difference between high school and college, but because I have great work ethics, I will be able to overcome any obstacle that comes in my way or challenges me. I would tell myself that I ROCK, and I am going to be that strong, successful, young black woman who achieves her goal to become a CPA of a prestigious accounting firm.

Be yourself. Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams or think radical thoughts. If you want something, go for it; don’t let what Mom and Dad or Severna Park High School tell you what is appropriate and what is not. Whatever thoughts come into your head, run with them; see where they take you. No one who thought inside the box or squashed any new or different ideas ever changed the world. Let your mind wander down those roads less traveled by, and don’t be afraid to express those new ideas and unconventional career goals. However, always remember to take criticism seriously. Also, although it’s important to maintain those bright ideas, be realistic as well; come up with well-thought out plans to achieve your goals. Yes, even the crazy ones. Stay open-minded to the ideas of others and always consider both sides of any argument before making a decision. Keep a calm head; try to be patient and collected in stressful situations. Don’t be afraid to be different. Stop doubting yourself. If you feel something, go with it. Full out. And don’t turn back.

I would give the adivce to myself, that i need to work a little harder, try to ask for help more. I would tell myself to try and focus and let nothing distract me, and try to aim to make a 4.0 so that i can be able to achieve the highest and try and go to an excellent colleges. I would tell myself to try and take advancing college classes so that my GPA goes higher when i do good, and to try and also when in testing since that is a struggle to try and find better ways to study even if that means having a study group and or just studying at home in the quiet. Also try to complete all homework assignments and do everything that is required in order to graudate and pass, recieve the all the initial requirements so that i can walk across the stage, even get extra scholarships and awards for all hard work. Also if necessary try and do extra credit so that i can pass every class with an A or A+ so that i can recieve grants and or other scholarships so that i can pay for school.

If I could go back and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would probably tell myself that college isn't what you imagined at all, and to be prepared to struggle, but also grow. I would say that although college isn't what the movies make it seem, it is still an amazing experience. College has given me a chance to grow as an individual so much, and has allowed me to get to know myself for who I really am. College is a fresh start and you really can be whoever you want, it's a chance to reinvent yourself for the best. I would say that the struggles will be worth it in the end, and that at the time the work and stress may seem unbearable, but that it is all happening for a reason. I would also remind myself not to try and grow up to fast, and that someday in the very near future - I will miss high school!

If I were to know in high school what I know now, there are several things I would tell myself. I would tell myself to work harder, even when subjects got tough. No one tells you to work hard in college. You have to decide if you are going to be successful on your own. Also, I would tell myself to ignore the bullies. I had a major bullying problem in my high school, and it would have been nice to know at that time how drama-free college is. In college, people care more about your intelligence. Lastly, I would tell myself to apply for more scholarships. During high school, I had a full savings account, and thought that it would be more than enough to get me through college. I was very wrong. I didn't want debt when I came out, so I have been paying for all of my tuition, rent, and other various other bills on my own. I am working two jobs on top of school work, and I desperately wish I would have saved more money. If I were to win this scholarship, I would be eternally grateful. Thank you for your time!

Bernadette

I would say that after high school the only possible path for me would be college, because college gets you ready for the life that you are about to enter. The world has lots of things waitting for you, but college will take you to a work force that you can deal with according to your degree. If I can not get in the field of my degree, I am always up to learning more new things, so that I can get the things that I need to make it in our society. Today education is the best thing going, even though the job force is a little low, when things begin to get right with the work force at least a college degree will help.

natasha

make sure you dont have any distractions while in school. Just go to school and focus on your degree.there will be plenty of time to party and hang out with friends. the longer you take the more money you spend and the less time you have to find a job in your degree so that you dont have to work the rest of your life.

Geraldine

Just because you feel you are not doing well academically, there are so many options that are available to you. You like to write, so look into taking creative writing which would help you toward your dream of publishing your own work. You enjoy literature; take some classes in the classics, as they will open up the world to you. History is another topic you enjoy, so take advantage of the various classes in that subject. Going to college will open up so many avenues for you. Don't be afraid to reach out and enjoy yourself after high school. High school is not the end of your intellectual growth; think of it as the front door, that opens into a wonderous garden, full of opportunities. Go ahead - take a chance. You won't regret it.

Ainsley

Be open to the new surroundings and people.

Peggy

Choose your college and classes carefully, because if you know things are going to get ugly pretty quickly, either transfer or (if you still want to stay there) choose a different class.

Andrew

Try harder in high school. It will make college much easier and fun for you. Also, appreciate the groups and clubs that you were in because maybe you could start something at college that other people would like. Find a group of people that share your same interests and stick to them. Also, don't forget about the friends you made in high school, because I regret not doing that now. Sure I have friends in college but I feel once I get back into the real world then there will be no one that I can talk too. That is why I am in the field of study that I am, so I can hopefully get my teaching degree and become a high school history teacher. That way I can pass this advice to my students and they won't be in the same place I am.

Jennifer

If I were to go back and talk to my high school self, I would tell myself to visit different schools to find the one that best suits my needs and appeals to me. Also, I would tell myself to try and work, but not over do it. Work enough to live off of, but don't focus more time on work than school. Going out and having a good time with friends is necessary to give yourself a break from school, but don't get caught up in all the drinking and partying, it just leads to a downward spiral for some. Manage your time wisely is another thing. Spend some time relaxing and winding down from the class day, but then get started on homework. The worst thing you can do is to procrastinate. Get it done right away because then you do not need to worry about it later. It will also most likely be done better if you take your time on it and not have to rush.

Emily

I would tell myself not to be so naive. The real world is tougher than you think. Financial aid is something you fight for because it is not a given. It is a lot of hard work.

Dominique

I would tell mysefl to prepare myself as if I were moving out on my own. To make sure that I have the things I need just as if I were still at home. In addition; I would say to get involved in campus activities early in my years and to be very socially active. Also to be true to myself and be who I am throughout my entire college career.

Adam

Once you get to college, make sure you go out and meet people! Get involved with the activities that are going on around campus early in the semester. Find a group of friends that you can get along with and get super close to them. Enjoy life, work hard in classes, and play hard on the field. You only get four years to experience what college is, so take advantage of every positive opportunity that it hands you!

Rufus

My college experience has been valuable to me for several reasons. First, I have seen the potential I have for success. When I left high school, I did not understand the value of education, so I turned my back on college and enlisted in the military. Although I opened a few doors, I allowed many more to close. In contrast, the last year has been amazing because most of those doors are open again; I am like a kid in a candy store! Moreover, I have seen a completely different side of my personality. As a young person, I was not very active socially, and I did not have many friends. Over the past year, I have made a host of new acquaintances, and even a few friends. Finally, I have discovered a potential in society not only for tolerance, but also for responsibility. I had begun to doubt that the human race had any real potential for good, because nobody ever seemed to do the right thing when it counted. The people I have met here have demonstrated a collective conscience and devotion to ethics that are simply amazing. In short, Virginia Wesleyan College has changed my life.

Rachel

I have gotten a lot out of college. I have learned so much about myself and about other people. I know now that I have the drive to maintain a 3.89 GPA and join the Honors and Scholars program. I learned that I can balance two jobs, an editorial position on the newspaper, and class. I have learned how important it is to me to finish school and be successful later on in life. I have also made some incredible friendships that I hope will last forever. It has been a great year and a half here at school and I hope I continue to have more great years. This environment and school has impacted my life in such a great way and I owe a lot to Virginia Wesleyan for allowing me to grow and become a better individual and a better citizen.

Attending Virginia Wesleyan College for the last year I have really appreciated the value of an education. This school constantly motivates me and makes me want to have a bright successful future. Before attending Virginia Wesleyan College I always wanted easy classes just to breeze through them and to come out with my degree. Now that I have been attending Virginia Wesleyan I look forward to the challenges that my professors place in front of me. I take on each challenge striving to perform ath the best of my ability. While attending this school I have even taken on a minor in business, praying that it makes my future even more brighter than I anticipated. Graduating soon with a Bachelor's Degree as a Psychology major and a minor in business I plan on doing great things and not forgetting my soon to be almata Virginia Wesleyan College, which has molded me into a positive individual who looks to take on a challenge.

So far, I have learned about the benefits of attending college not just for career goals but also for community service and giving back and overall involvement with the community. I have also learned the different routes my majors can take me in my future and I have become more involved in finding and pursuing my career goals. In general, my college experience has gave me the insight into how much I can really do with my future and how I can use my education to give back. Attending college has been extremely of value to me because it allowed me to begin to go forward with my education and aspirations. Not only has it got me looking forward to the future but also how to enjoy the present and use my education also as an opportunity to explore the world and many more of my interests. By attending college I have the chance to look forward to completing something my parents did not and making them even more proud of me for staying focused and graduating even with some odds against me.

Besides the great education, I've made friendships with people who I don't believe I could've made friendships with at any other college. The size of a campus was my biggest concern. It was important for me that I didn't feel like just another number on campus. I wanted to be able to know my professor one-on-one and Virginia Wesleyan has done a superb job with student to teacher ratios. I wasn't very active in high school so I knew that when I attended college I wanted to be more involved. Virginia Wesleyan offers a great deal of activities. From more traditional activities like sports and greek life to the more unsual activities like the zombie club. At Virginia Wesleyan one can honestly live up to the Marlin slogan "Bring a Spark, Light a Fire."

Rachel

I came to Virginia Wesleyan to run cross country and track, but found so much more. I have had great professors, who I now consider to be friends. This small school has allowed me to fit in two majors in a matter of three and a half years; an opportunity I would not have had at a small school. The Honors program here has given me chances to go on cool trips for free to things like Lion King on Broadway and an Admirals Hockey Game. My friends here are great and I love seeing someone whenever I walk accross campus. Although the food here is horrible, I am glad I am at VWC. Not to mention the beach is really close to school and I found an awesome church in the area.

Marianna

Though I have only been attending Virginia Wesleyan College for one semester now I have learned and experienced more than I would have imagined, and I also discovered I can do anything I put my mind to. Academically I have learned and developed more than I did in one year of high school. I've really found out how to manage my time and different classes. I found that whenever I have free time I should use it for studying. I have also discovered not what to do at college by observing my colleagues who have made rather wrong decisions. While college is a time to have fun it is also a time to prepare for the future which is something I value. When it comes to balancing fun and work at college I will always put preparing for my future first. I know anything I put my mind to I will accomplish and I intend to graduate with a B.S. in biology 2014.

College has opened many doors for me over the past year. I have gained several valuable experiences, which will allow me to gain knowledge and the necessary skills that are needed to inhance my career path. Also, my education has developed a great deal. I have become a more organized student, which has helped me apply myself to various campus organizations. My college experience is extremely important for my education and my personal development. When I began college, I expected to become home-sick. Instead I gained new friendships and learned more about my inner self. The college atomsphere has allowed me to become an independent individual, and has exposed me to diversity. Overall, college has allowed myself to grow as an individual by giving me the essential tools that are necessary for advancement in my future.

Three weeks before the start of my freshman year at James Madison University, I received a notification from Coach Renn, the tennis coach at Virginia Wesleyan College. I was being given an opportunity to play tennis and volleyball at a D3 school, the only price I would have to pay would be giving up the school that I had always claimed as the college I was attending. But was James Madison really the right fit for me? Something in my gut told me to give Virginia Wesleyan a chance, and I have never regretted the decision since. So far in my freshman year of college I have been given opportunities that I would not be able to receive at James Madison. VWC has given me the chance to stick out as an individual through my academics and athletics. At VWC I’m not just another number, I’m a contributing student that attends various programs offered through the school, contributes to the surrounding community, and supports my school by attending various sporting events. Deciding to come to Virginia Wesleyan was the best decison that I have made so far. I really feel that VWC is the right fit for me.

At first I did not give college a chance. I went to a college close to my home town. Many people told me repeatedly what a mistake it would be. They told me "you'll never get the true college experience being so close to home." You know something they were right. I couldn't stand being away from my parents, which is the opposite of most people. I had that urge of coming home. I didn't even want to spend a night when I first moved on campus. I wanted to live at home. I hear the naggingof "I told you" and "You're going to miss out on so much." If it weren't for tennis I would still probably go home every night right after my classes end. Today I still live at home, but it's different. I want to be at Virginia Wesleyan all the time. I stay on campus as much as I possibly can. I plan on living with one of my friends next year in a nicer dorm. Even though I commute I have made so many friends. I feel like the college experience is defined differently for everyone.

My college experience at Virginia Wesleyan College has been really interesting and enjoyable. I am a junior at VWC majoring in Recreation and Leisure Studies with a concentration in Management. When I was a senior in high school I had many options for schools which were a very difficult decision. As I began to narrow the schools down, I was unsure of Virginia Wesleyan because of the cost, but because of scholarships like the Campus Discovery Survey, I am able to continue my educational process. I have received many things so far on my educational track. Going to a private college the classes are a lot smaller than other schools that I was interested in. The one-on-one availability with your professors is something that I love and enjoy. My college emphasizes helping others and engaging in community service. This month we had a homeless shelter at our school which I volunteered at; the experience was so humbling and I was so thankful that I was able to give back and make a difference in the lives of others. I feel that VWC has been very valuable to attend because of the numerous resources and opportunities that it offers.

I've grown alot since I was a freshman, I learn alot about myself as a person and feel like I can learn more. I made great new friends and even though I stopped playing basketball, it help me realize a athlete isn't all I am. I'm way more than that which made me more confident as a person. I'm enjoying my college experience and is very valuable to me.

Darren

Even though I have only been in college for a couple of months, I feel as though I have gained plenty of experience. Living on my own has been one of those valuable experiences that have taught me many lessons about growing up. It teaches me to be self-motivated about many aspects of my life including school work and social life. Also, living in a community has been crucial to my learning experiences. This aspect has taught me to make friendships with those people that I can relate to. These relationships will prove to be beneficial as I mature through the rest of my life. My college experience has been nothing but, another step in understanding the world around me.

Andrea

In the Fall 2010 Semester and the 2011 Winter Semester that I am currently attending, I have found a place that allows diversity and creativity to work together to create a better environment not only for the college campus but for the community. I have broken through stereotypes of others as well as my own. My experience at Virginia Wesleyan as let me know that I do have a chance to not only make a difference in this country but also overseas with all of their opportunities that they have available to the students here.

Kelly

I have gotten from my collegeg experience the gift of knowledge. I have learned while attended college, the necessity of what it takes for me to achieve my goals. I have gained the experience of obtaining new friends. I have had the experience of having some of the best teachers. Teachers that will do what it takes to make sure you understand what you are doing. I also understand how very different college is from the high school life. I would never change any of the experience that i have had at college. Although not every one of those experiences were great, i would not change what happened, they shaped me to who i am becoming. College to me is very valuable, I am learning new ideas every day i attend. Another reason college is valuable to me is that it is helping me further my education in life. I feel as though if i did not attend college, I would be going down a terrible path in life. I am just so happy that i chose to attend college.

Jacqueline

I transferred to Virginia Wesleyan in the Spring of my sophomore year. Transferring to this school was the best thing I could have done. I am happier, more actively involved in campus life, and have had an overall enjoyable college experience here thus far. I play for the women's soccer team and I am involved in FCA (fellowship Christian athletes club). I have earned an average 3.789 GPA in my three years of college, majoring in Political Science/Government and minoring in Psychology. I believe the classes I have been immersed in have successfully exposed me to the kinds of ideas, concepts, and ideologies I hope to one day face in law school; at least, which is my plan once I graduate. My academic advisors have been extremely helpful in suggesting interesting and engaging courses I need to graduate and they have given me the tools and extra motivation to acheive my academic goals. I have been able to do so well at this college, in my opinion, not only because of my ambitious attitude and committment to my studies, but also because the people at this school have really helped foster my continual academic growth.

John

As a transfer student to Virginia Wesleyan I quickly made friends and developed strong working relationships with students and faculty. I have learned about the importance of being environmentally responsible and how to be an environmental steward. I have rediscovered who I am and who I can yet become. I have enriched my life through the volunteering opportunities that I have participated in at Virginia Wesleyan. I have learned the importance of building personal relationships with people outside of my own age group especially with my advisors and professors. I feel that it has been valuable to attend because I was not lost in the crowd; I was an individual, an individual whom professors knew and were interested and showed concern about both my academic performance and personal life goals. I know that the friends and relationships that I have made here will last for many years yet to come.

Failure, responsibility, commitment, friendship, accomplishments, achievements, tolerance, time management, goals, and, most of all, knowledge are some of the things I intake from attending college. I've learned a lot of what the adjective difficult really means, how to fail, to accept my mistakes, and grow from them, and that asking for help only benefits you and others. To give back is just as important as well. I'm building a tolerance for the arduous lifestyle, full of classes, studies, and part-time jobs, that's preparing me for my career. In my struggle to find time, I've adopted techniques to increase my time effectiveness and life management that have proved to enhance my daily performance and, overall, happiness. I've also observed, from myself and others, that goals can be set and, if given enough effort, can be achieved. Nothing is impossible. College has been one of the most valuable assets in my life. It has taught me to always stay on my toes and watch out for myself and that I can achieve what I imagined unreachable. Most importantly, my experiences at college have molded me into the makings of a man.

Latoya

Every since I arrived on Virginia Wesleyan's campus I learned that it was just like a family away from home. From the moment I walked on campus it was all about the word "community," something that you can't get at many colleges. My school works like a community, whenever we need help with something or do not have the proper materials, my school works hard to make sure that it is provided. To sum it up, my school is like the saying, " It takes a village to raise a child." There is always someone willing to help out and guide us when help is needed.

Cheri

The most valuable part of my college experience has been a second chance. In high school I was very quiet, did not have many friends, and was very depressed. At Virginia Wesleyan I have made many close friends, I am active in campus groups, and I am almost never sad. I think if I had gone anywhere but here I would've misssed the chance to meet my best friends. Campus is close enough to home, but not too close at 30 minutes away. Coming to school here has helped me become an independent, fun loving, happy person. I will never forget the times I have had here at Wesleyan.

Shawn

From my college experience I have learned and am still learning to be a professional. During a meeting with my english professor we discussed why people attend college. He said, "people come to college to learn how to be a professional." Whether on the court or in the classroom being at college has changed the person I am. I now am a more confident, decisive, responsible and determined person. I wake up every morning, get breakfast and prepare for the day whether I have a morning class or not because that is what a professional does. Their day isn't wasted away sleeping and watching tv. I have learned that being a professional also means that you have to have a plan and manage time wisely. A professional also needs to know when to be a leader and when to be led and work as a member in a group. My college experience has definitely taught me that. On the court I am a leader, in the classroom I know I have to be able to be led. My college experience is valuable because it's taught me to be a professional which will help me succeed in life.

Michael

I have gotten alot more than I think I realize now about of my college expierence. Ive had interviews for internships, meet some great faculty members and alot of great people. Im not sure how or why companies "own the right" to my answers on this survey. I understand they maybe giving students 5,000 but for those who do not receive any money does that mean they start getting "junk" emails and those phone call everyone just loves to answer at 3 A.M in the morning ?

Allison

In my college experience, I have learned many things about myself. College allowed me to experiment with many different classes. At first, I thought about becoming a lawyer so I took a Business Law class and quickly concluded that this was not the route for me. I also experimented in Communications and thoroughly enjoyed it until the major began to get too media based for me. I finally was ablt to settle on Business Managment which I found both challenging and rewarding. Through these different experiences, I was able to define who I was and who I wanted to become. College allowed me to take risks in order to accomplish a goal. During college, I worked in 4 different internships which allowed for further experiences and knowledge. Education is one of those activities that a person can never have too much of, and should never end. Because of that recent discovery, I have switched gears and gone back to school to recieve my Elementary Teaching License. After working in accounting for 3 years, I realized it was not for me. I am so thankful for the opportunities that college has given me and I look forward to grad school!

Victoria

So far I have gotten a lot out of my college experience here at Virginia Wesleyan College. So many people have not even heard of this school and I was happy when I got the privledge to attend somewhere different. It was been an interesting experience. I play softball here so I made friends very quickly. Also, since we have the "living communities" where people on your dorm hall all take one class together, we became really close with one another. It has been vaubable to me to attend such a diverse community. Overall my experience at Virginia Wesleyan has been amazing.

Donna

There was a time in which I thought a career in nursing was about having a good job; however I realize now that it has more to do with loving all people and respecting human dignity than what a person does for a living. College is an amazing journey and can offer each person a different experience. There are a lot of things in life that you don't get a return on your investments-college isn't one of them! College has made me a better person...the world would be a different place if EVERYONE could go to college.

Stephanie

In my college experience, I have received two things. One, being the most important , is a quality education. The professors at Virginia Wesleyan are great and I have gotten close to many of them. The professors make learning enjoyable and I actually like attending class everyday. Professors are easy to communicate with and are always willing to offer help whenever needed. I am very thankful for the professors the college provides and the education that they give. They are a great value to me for they are preparing me well for the job field I want to be in and overall my future. By attending Virginia Wesleyan I have also been given the strength to become an independent individual. When you move onto campus, your parents are not around anymore to make sure you clean your room, wash your dishes, or do your homework. You have to grow up quickly at college and when you do that it helps you in the future. When you graduate, and go into the real world, attending Virginia Wesleyan will benefit the decisions you make, because they must be adult and realistic ones. I am very greatful for my experiences at college.

Lauren

Not only have I made friends for life, but I have been surprised how much work I have actually accomplished. With all of the work required, my college has taught me about time management and really trying to do things to the best of my ability. I have taken advantage of many of the things my college has to offer to help me succeed such as the learning center and our library's 24 hour lounge. One of my favorite things about my college is the friendliness. Coming in as a freshman, I quickly made friends with not only people my age, but upperclassmen as well. Professors always offer one on one help if you are confused with something and are usually flexible with times. Even people like the cafe workers and janitors will always give you a friendly smile when you see them. Overall I am extremely happy that I chose Virginia Wesleyan College as my college choice and at this point I honestly could not see myself attending any other school.

Lynne

My college experience has been very oriented around my studies and classes. I work two jobs so I do not get the chance to participate as much as I would like to in extra activities. My class and study time has been of much value to me because it has taught me numerous lessons that I can apply to the real working world. I have also been able to do research studies and won the honor to speak a conference this up coming Spring, which I would have never had the opportunity to do had it not been for a professor who encouraged me to submit my paper. Over all I have enjoyed every minute of my college experience and I feel much more prepared to enter life after college.

Jade

My college experience has been very hard. Not only has classes been extremely different than high school, but having no money to get what I need has been just as hard. I have found friends that I believe I will have forever in my life. That has been a plus to my college experience. I hope that i keep gaining friends in my two and a half years that i have left at Virginia Wesleyan College. Although, I have experience hardships such as taking out massive loans, and struggling to be able to still attend this college to be a student-athelete, I have gained value of it being a Liberal Arts college. I enjoy the cohesiveness of the students and the teachers. It is like a family, a home, also known to us as a community. I have gained friendships through this community and proffessors I can count on if I need anything at all. That is what I call a college experience.

Carly

In my first semester of college, I have experienced ten times more than I ever could have imagined. I was able to be a part of the college varsity volleyball program and traveled to many schools. Through this I was able to form bonds with friends who will last a lifetime. My friends at school are truly like a second family to me. While i do feel I could have made friends at other schools, I don't think the bond would have been as strong as I have found. The college truly promotes a community feel. I have the opportnuity to sit down to lunch with my professors, go to their offices just to chat and am recognized by my name in passing. This experience has made me feel valued and in turn is the most valuable aspect of my experience.

Mikayla

My college experience has been unforgettable. It has been a wonderful way to bring my life forward in a positive way. Going to college has helped me prepare for my future so I can achieve my goals. The environment in college is great because many people around you are also focused on making a good life for themselves through education. One of the most valuable things about getting a higher education is becoming more of an asset to your community and your family. Having the opportunity to help your family through life as well as helping others because you are educated is important. There are so many things you are able to accomplish in your life through education, and college has opened countless doors and opportunities for my future. Becoming an asset in my community is one of the most valuable things attending college has done for me.

Kelsey

I have learned how diverse people are by making new types of friends that I never would have if I had not gone here. The social aspects of this college are great. I have also learned a lot of skills I will need in my career field after college. Not only that, but I have been able to meet real professions in my field that gave me valuable insight. The college has also helped me apply for jobs in the field and make me a more competitive applicant. I also have had many opportunities to do community service type work that I found I really like. I know that even after college I want to continue helping my community. I know that coming here has really changed me and my outlook on the world and only for the better.

You know how people say that distance makes the heart grown fonder? Well going to Virginia Wesleyan as taught me how to be tough in life, it taught me that not everything you hear or see is correct or right. But most importantly, it taught me to seek to find truth in everything. Going to Wesleyan has led everything to be tested in my life, my relationships, my finances, my faith, my education. It takes rain to see a rainbow or a bad day to understand a good day.

My college experience has been one of the best experiences of my life. It has been a true pleasure to learn new skills and fine tune forgotten or little used ones. I feel the experience has given me new confidence in myself, which will help me greatly when I return to the coporate world. It was a very hard decision to make-going back to school and being over fifty. But, it was the best choice I could have made. Not only has the college experience helped instill a new confidence in me, it has also helped me to plan my future. In these troubled times I feel it gives me an edge in a number of ways; in social settings, skill level, self esteem and confidence. The college experience and the joy of learning are fantastic and I will really miss it when I graduate.
