Washington State University Top Questions

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

Victor

The most frustrating is not knowing anyone in your first year. I struggled on making new friends because it was pretty hard for me. Until then I started to gain new friends and joined a fraternity to have brothers. Making friends was frustrating, but it works out in the future.

Zhilong

There isn't great resource to help you catch back up if you fall behind, everyone's sort of on their own.

Emily

no

Ulises

The most frustrating thing about WSU has to be that there are a lot of hills. However after a short period of time you tend to get used to them and they are a great form of cardio for those that don't like to exercise frequently.

Tara

The lack of understanding towards students who come from families of financial struggle.

Alexis

The fact that it is in the middle of nowhere and if the weather is bad (which it typically is in the winter) it can be very difficult to get back to the Westside of the state and the Seattle area. Also, because we are such a tight-knit community there are sometimes rivalries and drama between the fraternities and between the sororities.

Katie

Due to lack of resources and budget cut, some of the programs are no longer available. Business students are only allowed to have one major, no minor or double major. This will makes it less favorable when other students come to choosing their university. Also, since the school is located in a town, there are less jobs and internships available for students to gain hands-on experience before they enter to workplace.

Jessica

I really loved WSU and can not think of anything negative about it other than the weather.

Michelle

Having professors that are talented in their area but have no teaching skills whatsoever.

Desiree

We are located in an extension of WSU here at the Spokane Riverpoint campus, and the size of this campus is smaller than the main one. There is less alternatives to healthier food here (we only have one food vender).

Pauline

The hills at WSU were daunting. There is NO parking at the top of any hill so every day and for every class you go to you have to climb hills! The other thing that was frustrating at WSR was the sense of being nothing more than a number by the administration. There was no connection between yourself and your advisor.

Christina

At times, it can be so easy for students to forget that there exists another world besides that of Pullman, and so students can deceive themselves into thinking they are the best ones in their field and don't need to try any harder to succeed. People tend to get somewhat too comfortable with where they are and so lose ambition.

Meghann

By far the most frustrating thing about Washington State University is that when it comes to budget cuts, the school always decides to cut the financial aid funding. This is especially frustrating for me because I rely on financial aid to pay for my tuition. Without this money there is no way that I can afford to attend this school and it doesn't help that the tuition costs are being raised as well. If financial aid doesn't get cut, my life would be much less stressfull.

Megan

Again the rise in tuition is extremely frustrating! Especially, when they keep cutting programs and teachers. How will that help with educating students? Another frustrating part is how some members of the staff and falcuty are being paid. The president "will receive an annual salary of $600,000. His contract also includes retention bonuses of $50,000 in the second and third years, $100,000 in the fourth year and $150,000 in the fifth year" (WSU Article Index-Elson S. Floyd Named 10th President of Washington State University). There are raises going on, but cuts continue along with tuition .

Arielle

The most frustrating thing for me is the emphasis on partying here. Students complain about their grades when all they do is drink and party on the weekends. I feel like if we weren't branded as a party school it wouldn't be as much of a problem. Also, when I tell people I am attending WSU, they automatically assume I party every night. I don't like that.

David

Not enough Finacial Aid when needed

Brant

Probably the frustating thing about the school is that it is built on a hill and depending on where you are staying and where your classes are, it can quite hike to some of the buildings. Another thing is all the required this and that, but that it probably like any other university.

Wendy

The most frustrating thing about my school is that while we are a university prided in being diverse, we still have cases of racial, gender, and sexual orientation hate acts. This bugs me because we live in a day and age where we should all be able to get along, and being at a school that prides itself for that, you would think the students here would be better about letting everyone belong.

Katie

The faculty and administration pretend to care what students want, but really they don't listen at all. Everything is so tied up with 'the state' and 'money above us' that they forget that the students are the only reason the school exists. Also, there is zero student life here! Zero! I go to WSU Vancouver, not Pullman.

Shealyn

The most frustrating thing about going to Washington State is the bad reputation it recieves for being a party school, when in reality only a small group of students fit that steriotype.

Megan

That there are people who do not pull their own weight in group situations and that the school will not change the Math 201 class, despite numerous complaints about the professor and the way it is run.

Francesca

The lack of culture or acceptance of other cultures. I think my school needs to do a better job of recruiting African American, Chicano/Latino, Asian and Pacific Islander students.

Scott

What's most frustrating at my school is the lack of on campus entertainment and proximity to retailers. Unless you have a friend with a car, going to the movies or grocery shopping can be a little aggravating. Pullman does have a transit system, but the buses only run every 30 minutes during the working hours - often, I find myself walking back to my dorm past several bus stops with no bus in sight.

Kaile

The inaccessability of the other students. A lot of them are non-traditional students. Older, married moms or dads are common. This makes it kinda hard for someone like me to find people with things in common with.

Allison

The only social options are binge drinking most weekends or dedicating yourself to the cult-like religious groups. There are no groups of people that drink occasionally but also participate in non-drinking social activities.

Breanna

Budget cuts.

Cassandra

We do not get the same recognition or funding as a larger campus. Also, we do not have that many programs or degrees.

Ian

It is difficult to get information or opportunities regarding scholarships and internships.

Teresa

The Edward R. Murrow School of Communication at my school is one of the best. It 's known for having an excellent advertising/communication program and for preparing its students for the job market. However, my advisor rushes through meetings after weeks of trying to get in to see her. She tells you what classes you take, instead of getting to know the student and what would be best for them. An advisor should make an effort to get to know the students that they advise, and a relationship should be built. Unfortunately, my advisor and I lack that.

Sarah

It is not fun when it snows. There are a lot of hills and walking to class is the snow is not the most enjoyable. Usually the sidewalks are cleared or there is salt on them, but there are some patches that are not maintained.

Jeremy

Some professors are completely uninterested in teaching because they feel it gets in the way of their research. I also wish that fraternity/sorority life was less exclusive.

Stephanie

That they are not more enviromentally friendly

Brennan

The small community and being able to adjust, after adjusting it seemed to be just fine. There was never enough things to do in the evening, but somehow my friends and I always found a way around that. Many people just complain of the small town atmosphere while others rejoice from it. The fact is you just need to take some time to get used to it.

Briana

The competition to be awarded a spot in upper division classes within certain majors.

Nick

For the most part its great. However, I wish there were a couple more places to shop that were closer.
