West Valley College is a wonderful school. It is beautiful, welcoming, and affordable. The students are all pretty friendly and hard working. For a community college they have really special arts programs happening on campus. The most amazing quality of this school by far are the teachers. Every single teacher I had not only wanted to be there but was so dedicated to their students. The teachers who I had a chance to work with at West Valley forever changed my life and gave me a safe place to grow and learn.

It's decent, the classrooms aren't bad but some of them smell a little bad, majority of the professors respond quickly to student emails but there are still those who never contact students or respond too late. The campus looks good, they upgrade buildings and keep technology up to date for the most part. Parking is a hassle but I think that's normal for a community college.

For a community college, you can't really go wrong with West Valley. Every department I've taken a class in or been a part of I've enjoyed, I've yet to have a bad instructor. There's lots to do on campus. I personally love to go to the Campus Center for the cafeteria and to do some homework. They have great tutoring services for any and every subject.

As of Spring semester of 2019, I cant believe how bad the overall service of this school is! Counselors don't know what TF they are talking about and just simply recommend that you speak with the teacher instead.(complete waste of time, should've just done that) Online website is terrible! It's not user friendly at all, and it has now been 2 weeks into the beginning of the semester and there are still MANY problems with simply signing into CANVAS or MY PORTAL. Such an embarrassment how one cant even check their homework instructions online. What can kind of college is this in Silicon Valley? Where rich people pay their taxes for a non working website. The campus is indeed beautiful, so thank the Landscapers not the Staff.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

High school... Looking back it is a fun care-free place with a lot to do. Yet, at the time, it was suffocating. I would like to let my younger, more impetuous, self know that sticking to a goal is what will get you through. Your dream job really does exist, just stick to your major and everything WILL fall into place. Do everything you can to expose yourself to the career of your dreams. Take the time you have now to gain as much knowledge as you can. You never know when your life may change, and your freetime may disappear. So - focus, stick with it, and always do your best.

  3. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

I think the worst thing about West Valley is the fact that they aren't too clear about what you're supposed to do when it comes to financial aid. They also don't explain when grants or loans come in or offer enough information on grants and scholarships. For me being not only new to the state, but having never been in college, it was confusing and irritating at times.

  4. Describe the students at your school.

Many of the general education students are a little bit older than me, but friendly, most of the people in classes applicable to my major are twice my age, socially isolated, and majoring in nursing, and the people in my honors classes are mostly close to my age, but very judgemental and cliquey.

  5. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish that before I started at West Valley College that I knew more about all the scholarship programs and financial help opportunities that are offered at the school in order to help student continue and succeed in College. I did not find out about all of these programs until at least 6 months into school. Since then I have been getting financial aid which has helped a lot, but I know that there are still more programs out there to learn about that would help me even more.

  6. Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

Since I work and go to school, I wanted to make sure my experience at school would be as low stress as possible. The environment of West Valley College is incredibly peaceful. There are trees everywhere you look and water running down a creek bed between buildings. Between classes, I can sit on a bench near the lawn or take a short walk down a leaf covered path. It is quiet and very easy to study since the school is spread across such a large piece of land.

  7. What kind of person should attend this school?

Any person, no matter your age, ethnicity, financial status, or goals should go to West Valley college. The teachers and faculty are extremely nice and very accepting. The students, as well, are very friendly. For every class I've taken I have added at least two more people to my Facebook. Sure that sounds silly, but in a few years when we are all in different places it will be nice knowing someone that could be a coffee buddy, potential networking connection or even future employer/employee.

  8. What kind of person should not attend this school?

I don't think a person who is completely dependent on others should go to this school. It really pushes for students to be on their own and be responsible. A person who is completely dependent on others would feel completely lost and confused most, if not all the time. Also, if you're looking to pass college without working hard, don't go to West Valley College. They really push for your best.

  9. What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

Due to recent California budget cuts, I find it frustrating that my school has had to raise the prices for classes and cut down on academic classes in order to meet the recent budgets that the California government allots. If California found a way to restructure the education budget so that the money is divided evenly, then students would be able to meet their educational goals without the budget cut setbacks.
