Just like every school, some are idoits, but most are good people who put an effort into learning but don't take everything too seriously. Most don't take western too seriously and almost everyone fails out at first. But it's easy to get back in!

Dawson

I haven't had any experiences with groups on campus yet and I don't have a good idea of the student body yet. Everyone that I have interacted with seems nice and I have not had any problems yet.

Jess

everyone is fairly friendly at wmu. campus is pretty diverse and i haven't had any real issues in terms of interaction with students.

Ryan

I think we have good racial groups. I am apart of NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) and I feel like we really help the school. I am also apart of CBC (Collegiate Black and Christian). There are more black greek organizations which are coming back and YBM (Young Black Males) aka YBMSN (Young Black Male Support Network) is really good on getting younger students hooked-up with older students. Their sister chapter YBBW (You Beautiful Black Woman) is a good one also. With the start of the BSU (Black Student Union) I hope this unites all the black student groups, which is their main focus. I think all students can find their niche at WMU I think students wear basically what most students wear. Some try to look good and impress everyone, some people really don't care and will wear a hoody and jeans everyday. Most students from WMU are from Michigan, mainly the east part of the state Middle-class, upper-class Students may be on the below average on their political awareness I don't hear too much discussion on how much they will make, until senior year when you get offers. Then you might discuss with your friends and classmates what your offer is and compare with theirs.

Sean

The best part of WMU is that you can get a large school with a fairly small school feel. I've never felt overwhelmed by the size of WMU but it has always been nice that it is a school with so many people who you can connect with and experience new things because of. There are a number of student groups on campus and provide students with many ways to interact with one another. Most students are pretty casual with their clothes and it can range from laid back sweats to business attire. I would say the majority of students at WMU are from Michigan although I have also met many people from the Chicago area. There seems to be a good mix of "east" and "west" Michigan people too so it is quite fun to compare previous experiences. Although there are

Stephanie

Our student body, as well as our surrounding community, is very open. I think that is the best way to put it. We have several large organizations dedicated to the LGBT community, as well as religious events on campus open to all student and a growing international student population.

Morgan

Most students tend to wear comfortable clothes rather than nicer looking ones. Most WMU students tend to be from Michigan or close-by states, otherwise many students are from overseas.

Andy

I don't think there's a single person that would feel out of place at Western, unless they were intimisated by size. There's a group for every area. I thought that being a Christian would be difficult here, but there are so many religeous groups, I sometimes feel like I go to a Christian college! There are also a lot of sports, recreation, and political groups. There's really something for everyone. One thing I feel a little outnumbered about is the fact that I'm a Republican, and even though I know fellow Republicans, I definitely feel outnumbered in my classes, especially when the discussion takes a political turn. I think though, that any liberal arts college in America is going to be like that, so it's not really Western's fault.

Ainsley

Mostly white middle classed christian striaght tall. All black people on campus know eachother as african american organizations reach out to new black students all the time and black students are acclimated with the minority community very early. Latinos revolve around Sigma Lambda Gamma, Sigma Lambda Beta and Latino Studend Organization. Young latino students, exchange students and Dominican Students are well aquainted with eachother by way of theese organizations, while all other minorities unite under their own respective organizations. Indian people live all in the same area, and gay guys goto Club Metro to meet other gays in the area.

Kaylynn

Most students wear very casual clothes to class. Jeans and shirt/sweatshirt for the most part...Some of the grad students dress more professionally b/c they go to class when they aren't working. Students who are more involved on campus are more likely to interact with people who are not like themselves. People who are involved seem to be more open-minded about other people. Most WMU students are from Michigan. There are especially a lot from west and southwest Michigan. I have never had a discussion with a student about how much they earn in one day.

Miranda

There are so many groups to participate in at Western that it is hard to have time to do everything you want.

Brad

I am involved in Campus Crusade for Christ or "Cru" which is an interdenominational Christian organization but it is just one of several. I believe there are also Jewish and Muslim groups. I would say that nobody will feel out of place there is a wide variety of people from around the U.S. and the world. Most people just wear casual clothes whatever is comfortable. I would say most WMU students are from the Great Lakes area. Middle-Upper class is the most prevalent finance background. Some students are more politically active than others with a wide variety of views. Earnings is not a very big topic of discussion but it does come up.

Jo

I try to keep to my own kind. I don't have much experiences with people out of my racial circle. Most students where hoodies and jeans to class. Different types of students interact through force. They are forced to work together even though they don't want to but their professors think it will be beneficial because in the workplace they will at some point work with people they don't like. Most WMU students are from MI. Upper-middle class is most prevalent. Yes, we are politically aware, those who choose to be that is. No, students don't talk about how much they'll earn one day, unless they are engineers.

Adam

those are all just people, none, except the first week of spring extremely casual, all types ages races and backrounds and intelegence levels some people at WMU should never speak to anyone ever agian, 1: white frat boys/ sorority girls 2: Black athletes 3: average people 4: bizzar ass people, Michigan and Illinois, Most people come from families with enough money to pay for school and spending money and send their kids on spring break without noticing a financial difference, not at all, it seems most don't care enought to have an opinion, Only people from U of M talk about how much money they'll make.

Craig

There is a present and growing population of middle Eastern and Asian students. Most of the students are fairly laid-back, and the campus has a faint liberal slant. Overall, the student body is the biggest incentive WMU has to offer - if you are center to left leaning, and if you have some substance beyond superficial charm.

Edith

WMU has a strong LGBT group on campus. Most of the students are middle class, and most work as well as go to school. A great many students interact on the campus. The four tables include a group of students working on a business writing proposal, a group of international students, a group of cafeteria workers on break, and a group of students who are all going to get on a bus to go to their internships in Lansing. WMU students are very politically aware. Most are right-wing and Republican. Students do not talk about how much they'll earn one day, until they get into their junior or senior year. Those with job offers tend to talk about their up-coming annual salaries.

Sarah

its very diverse...its a very wonderful and welcome thing!

Andy

Groups are open.

Amanda

My experience with religious groups on campus extends to Christian Challenge, which I enjoy. It's very laid back, and takes a digestible approach to walking with God. I don't feel like I'm a terrible person when I go, as I have other times in different places. Most girls seem to wear either trendy clothes - UGG boots, sometimes skirts when its cold, long layered shirts, and leggings, or they wear a variety of things. It seems split nearly evenly in some of my classes, half of the girls are very trendy, and half are everything else. Guys seem to dress in multiple styles, each seeming to conform to their social group. I have seen very few Caucasian males in what is typically considered "ghetto fashion," though I have seen many Caucasian males, as well as African-American males dressed in suits and ties, possibly not of their own accord.

KennyH

Its very diverse here, i don't think anyone would feel out of place. most studenst wear casual wear.

Ann

I have come across many different kinds of people here. Everyone seems to get along. It seems like everyone mingles and mixes together. I have had many conversations about race and other controversial subjects and it seems like everyone I have talked to is really open about it. Most of the students seem to accept everyone how they are. I have also found a mix of financial backgrounds. Most of the students I have talked to are from Michigan but, there are quite a few students that are from all over the place.

Brooke

i have a lot of different friends with different backgrounds. i don't know of a student that would feel out of place here. most students wear sweatpants and hoodies to class. all kinds of different students interact. one table is all guys, one table is all girls, one table is a couple, the other table all has accents. most wmu students are from southern michigan, near detroit. most people rely on financial aid, but the ones who have their parents' money are noticed. a select group of students are politically active. i don't know either way. most of my friends are involved in the arts, so monetary things aren't usually in the picture.

Aaron

I have had presentation on LGBT issues before. I don't think any students would feel out of place. Western has a good mixture of students. Most students wear sweatshirts and blue jeans. I think all types of students interact with each other, at parties I see all different majors. The four tables would be partiers, studious students, sports nuts, and others. i find that there are kids from all types of financial backgrounds. I am not politically aware but other students are.

Tristan

Everyone seems to mesh and blend really well. I see everyone being friends with everyone else. I think a lot of students are from financially wealthy backgrounds, but I know at least a few that are here only on scholarships and loans. Everyone will usually stick to people that are like them, but it seems that everyone gets along well with everyone else. I don't see any racism or homophobia or anything like that.

lydie

I think that there is a wide range of diversity and not one student would feel more out of place than another. students who live on campus seem to wear more causal clothes that those who live off. students are all over the map interms of money and goals, people honestly just want to make friends.

Tristan

Greek life is pretty big at WMU. In fact, several of my friends belong to sororities. Sorority and fraternity organized charity events are frequent on campus. Always, during the warm months, a myriad of chalkings can be found on the WMU sidewalks advertising the different groups. And, I think they try to recruit about once a semester. Students with all sorts of financial backgrounds attend Western. Most people I know have taken out loans to pay for school; some pay entirely with loans, others have help from scholarships and parents. Although most WMU students are from the state of Michigan and surrounding states, there are actually quite a few international students. WMU also hosts an international week; several activities, dinners, movies, lectures, go on all week to help students of different cultures learn and accept each other. There is a gay population on campus, and there is an LGBT group that vocalizes the injustices they face. I remember, in my Freshman Year Experience class, an LGBT panel came into speak to the class and to answer any questions we had. Overall, WMU students come from a variety of backgrounds and have a variety of beliefs, but we all somehow accept each other. And despite the nice cohesiveness, WMU students are always working to make the relationship better.

Andrea

I have had positive experiences with all of the groups on campus except for the religious and political (mostly the student republicans group) on campus. Those two groups often take things to the extreme but don't take into account other peoples beliefs or the fact that they are at a liberal arts college. I can't think of anyone who would feel out of place at WMU, it is a very diverse school. Most students dress weather appropriate to class. Since we are in Michigan, boots and heavy duty jackets are standard in winter and other clothes depending on the season. Different types of students do often interact with each other, whether it be in class or socially. I never lived in the dorms, so I don't know much about the dining halls. There are a lot of WMU students from all across Michigan as well as out of state. We also have a large number of foreign students as well. The financial backgrounds are not important in the realm of the student body. I wouldn't say there are prevalent ones because WMU makes it possible for almost anyone to afford tuition and expenses. As I have said before, WMU is a liberal arts college and many students are politically aware and active. I would say the majority of students are left wing liberals, but there are other groups as well. Generally, students do not talk about how much they'll earn one day, from my experience. It's not that they don't know, it's that they are happy with what they are doing and most only care about that.
