Westminster College-Salt Lake City Top Questions

What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

Brandon

Due to its high tuition, Westminster is thought to be full of rich, dumb students. That couldn't be farther from the truth. Well over 90{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the students are awarded scholarships based off of both merit and need each year. There is a lot of diversity here on campus, especially being located in Utah. There are few stereotypes that actually exist on campus, but the only one that is absolutely always true involves the snow. If you love to ski, snowboard, or just be outside during any part of the year, Westminster College is the place for you. It's not full of the "granola" type, but full of the adventuresome, "let's go camping" type. I have friends that ski up to five times a week at some of the world's best ski resorts in the world. Most are even located within a fifteen minute drive. That is the only stereotype that Westminster truly has.

When I tell people I go to Westminster, they often are amazed and mention how nice a school it is and how smart the students are. I believe this stereotype to be accurate as we have an array of students from all over, and some of the best academic programs in Utah.

Since our school is so expensive, a lot of people think we are rich, spoiled, snobbish, etc. However, this is entirely untrue. Over 90 {4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of all students that are accepted are automatically given a large merit-based scholarship on a yearly basis. For example, When I was accepted here, I also received an $11,000 scholarship per year. I did not have to apply, ask for, or in any other way work for this scholarship. This helped tremendously with paying for my college, and along with other scholarships that I applied for, I ended up paying only a few thousand dollars per semester. Many other students can only afford it because they are in the military, or because they are receiving funding from a G.I. bill. Another less common stereotype is that we are dumb ski bums who only came to Westminster for the skiing. This is very untrue, as there are many people here who cannot ski at all. Although there are some serious skiers here, there are no more here than there are at the University of Utah, about a mile away from us.
