There are many reasons why anyone would choose Whitman College: small teacher to student ratio, a strong liberal arts education, an intimate and friendly campus, and especially the College being in the middle of nowhere. My reasons for choosing Whitman are all of these things. But there is one more.
Last April, I saw the College for the very first time. Like many other students who see Whitman for the very first time, I fell in love with the campus. The day I visited, Shira Erlichman also visited. She is a musician, poet, and artist. Her music was soft and beautiful, her poems were humorous and poignant, and her art…well, she didn’t bring any, but I’m sure it is just as awe-inspiring as her voice and creativity. I thought, as I watched her perform, if Whitman invites such a person to campus, then this college must have such a group of people to spend a Friday night down in the basement of Reid Campus Center…And I was right.
The community. I felt it when I visited and I knew I would get a great education in an environment when I felt safe, comfortable, and part of something bigger.
