A great many scholarship competitions require a written essay. Scholarship committees do this for a variety of reasons. One of the main ones is to get an idea of what the person who's applying for the scholarship is like. Yes, GPA, community service, volunteerism and leadership are important qualities, but by the time you've gotten to where you're being considered, everyone you're competing against will also have strong records in all these areas. And so the scholarship committee will read your essay to see what sets you apart from the crowd, looking for a reason it.

The thing I wish I knew before going to school is something important to know before going to any college. I wish I knew the importance of having self confidence. I learned that it is important to know my personal strengths and be confident in the person who I am.

The academics are challenging - Whitman has a high reputation when it comes to the quality of students it produces and it makes sure to keep this high standard by setting a high standard of learning. But, other students and professors are helpful and engaging. Walla Walla is a small town but Whitman always brings entertainment to the campus and students always find fun things to do.

I don't think there's anything I would've done differently. There are some specific personal athletic things I wasn't aware of; but overall I think encountering new and scary things is a big part of the freshman experience, and Whitman does a good job of helping adjust to the changes.
