Posted byUnigo Staff July 7, 2022January 11, 2023

We’re thrilled to announce the winner of our 2022 Superpower Scholarship. We are so happy to have had 1,063 students that applied and we want to thank you all for participating and allowing us to learn about each of you.

The essay asked “Which superhero or villain would you want to change places with for a day and why?”

Jaime Suggs from Boone, NC and a student at Appalachian State University had the winning answer. She joins our list of Unigo scholarship winners and we couldn’t be prouder.

Read Jaime’s winning essay below.

Chaos surrounds me. People are milling around, their voices soaring above all other sounds. Color blurs about as they rush past, meshing with the background in an uncertain mix of hues. They confuse my mind, overpower my thoughts, silence the questions I try to answer as I look at my schoolwork. At first panic approaches, attempting to create further trouble as it suggests I will not finish my work in time, but I do not let it take over; instead, I silence it as I tune out my surroundings. I can find peace, and that is located in my mind palace. While he may not follow the definition of a superhero held by most, Sherlock Holmes from BBC?s ‘Sherlock’ has a particularly useful superpower: the ability to gather complete control over himself, this coming in the form of his mind palace. In his mind palace, Sherlock is able to tune out the rest of the world to focus on solving a case, using his high intelligence to answer questions that most would never think of to begin with. He is able to exercise complete control over himself and his emotions on command. And such a power is one I desire. The world around me can feel quite overwhelming at times, especially since I have trouble dealing with stress and am often overwhelmed with my own thoughts and worries. Thus, the ability to take control of these and tune out the rest of the world is one I wish for.
