Winning scholarship essay
July 17, 2006 - I unearthed my first dinosaur. I was going to be a paleontologist. October 29, 2007 - I begged for a puppy. I was going to be a dog trainer. November 15, 2008 - I saw my first off-Broadway production, The Lion King. I was going to be an actress. May 25, 2010 - I adored my 4th and 5th grade teacher. I was going to be an educator. March 10, 2012 - I saw my favorite band live for the first time. I was going to be a professional groupie. January 20, 2014 - I rolled, not skied, all the way down the mountains of Colorado. I was going to be an Olympian. February 3, 2015 - I immersed myself in John Grisham novels. I was going to be a litigator. May 4, 2015 - I helped build my first house. Or prop house at least. I was going to be a set designer. August 30, 2016 - After a night of searing pain, I had a nonvital organ removed. I was going to be an ER nurse. October 1, 2017 - I was accepted to my dream school as an Accounting major. Who would have thought that that little girl with big dreams would finally find her passion?
Scholarship tips from our winner
The process of applying for scholarships seems daunting, and there is no denying that it is. Take a deep breath, and remember that you have many opportunities to improve your writing and skills. Apply for as many scholarships as you can, but choose a few in areas you are passionate about and invest your time into them. Your passion and love for a topic will be reflected in your writing.
Take time to be creative! Change your formatting, explore a prompt from a new angle, write about what makes you uniquely you. No idea or essay topic is too out of the box if it is coming from your heart.
