Student Loan Forgiveness in Texas: Everything You Need to Know

The good news is that there are a number of student loan forgiveness programs available, including one in Texas. Keep reading to learn more about the Texas Student Loan Forgiveness Program and how to qualify.

As the cost of higher education continues to rise, more and more students are struggling to pay off their student loans. In Texas, there are several programs that offer student loan forgiveness for those who work in certain public service or teaching positions. For example, according to studentaid.gov, under the Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program, if you teach full time for five complete and consecutive academic years in a low-income school or educational service agency, and meet other qualifications, you may be eligible for forgiveness of up to $17,500 on your Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans and your Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans.

Other loan forgiveness options for teachers only are as follows:

  •  Teach for Texas Loan Repayment Assistance
  •  Public Service Loan Forgiveness
  • Federal Perkins Loan Teacher Cancellation
  •  Math and Science Scholars Loan Repayment Program

Loan forgiveness options for all education staff including non-teachers are the following:

  • Public Service Loan Forgiveness
  • Federal Perkins Loan Cancellation for Special Education

There are also several state-specific programs that offer loan forgiveness for Texans who work in certain public service or medical positions.
