Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a resident of South Carolina.
  2. Must have lost one or both parents by death.
  3. Must be a high school senior at time of application and plan to pursue a bachelor's degree at an accredited four-year college or university as a freshman. The award cannot be used at technical schools nor for associate's degrees.
  4. This award is for U.S. students.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This award is for U.S. high school seniors who are residents of South Carolina. The student must have lost one or both parents by death, and must have financial need and a satisfactory scholastic record.

Application requirements for the James F. Byrnes Scholarship are:

  • Interview
  • Recommendation letter
  • Application form
  • Official Transcript
  • Photograph
  • Autobiography
  • ACT/SAT scores
Additional Information: All applicants must have financial need and a satisfactory scholastic record. The James F. Byrnes Foundation also feels that it is important that excellence in character, ability, and enterprise be shown by applicants to indicate that the individual will make worthwhile contributions to society. Please note: If selected as a semifinalist, applicants must be available to attend an interview scheduled for dates TBA in Columbia, South Carolina. Byrnes Scholars are responsible for participating in three activities per year. The Byrnes Scholars Luncheon is held on the second Saturday of June each year in Columbia, South Carolina. The Byrnes Scholars Super Weekend is normally held on the third weekend in March in Garden City Beach, South Carolina. The Byrnes Scholars Fall Dinners are held in October each year, and are hosted by alumni in various cities throughout South Carolina.

Award Amount: $3,250 annually, renewable for up to three additional years. Yearly scholarship renewal is contingent upon the recipient's maintenance of satisfactory academic standing, participation in Byrnes Scholar activities, and a continual need for financial assistance.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $3,250.
