Number of Awards & Eligibility: Up to 10 fellowships offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a graduate student who will be submitting his/her thesis within 6 to 18 months.
  2. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  3. Must be pursuing education within the Photonics field (electro-optics, lasers, photonics, optics, or closely related fields).

Description: This award is for IEEE Photonics Society student members pursuing a graduate education within the Photonics field of interest.

Additional Information: The IEEE Photonics Society established the Graduate Student Fellowship Program to provide Graduate Fellowships to outstanding Society student members pursuing graduate education within the Society field of interest. Students should normally be in their penultimate year of study at time of nomination. Up to ten Fellowships of $1000 each will be awarded, based on research excellence and contributions to the Society’s publications and conferences. The geographic distribution of the awards will take into account the student membership in each of the main geographical regions: Americas, Europe/Mid-East/Africa, Asia/Pacific.

Award Amount: $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.

Applications are available online from The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) website. In addition to a completed application form, students must submit: cover letter to include name, address, email, IEEE member number, expected date of submission of the thesis, and a listing of any activities related to the Photonics Society, along with the names and contact information of two references; a one-page CV, including all degrees received and dates; one copy of educational transcripts; a 300-word statement of purpose describing the student’s research project and interests; the statement is to include the background to the project, what the student has achieved so far and how the research will be continued and developed by the student over the rest of the project; a list of the student's publications with the most significant paper indicated and a 100-word description of the significance of the paper; two reference letters from individuals familiar with the student's research and educational credentials. All applications must be submitted online by the deadline.
