Description: This essay contest is open to all U.S. high school students who are members of the classes of 2015 and 2016. Students must submit an 800- to 1,200-word essay on a topic related to religious liberty.

Additional Information: The goals of the Religious Liberty Essay Contest are to engage high school students in church-state issues and to generate student interest from a diverse cross-section of Baptist Joint Committee supporting bodies. Entries will be judged on the depth of their content and the skill with which they are written. Students should demonstrate a sound knowledge of the subject matter and support their assertions. Essays should be free of grammatical errors and should be clear, concise, and well-organized. Judges reserve the right to present no awards or to reduce the number of awards if an insufficient number of deserving entries are received. Winners will be announced in summer and will be featured in the Baptist Joint Committee's 'Report from the Capital' newsletter.

Award Amount: The first-place winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship and a trip to Washington, D.C. to receive his/her award at the BJC board meeting. The trip includes reasonable travel and lodging expenses for contest winner and accompanying parent or guardian to attend the BJC board meeting. The second-place winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship. The third-place winner will receive a $250 scholarship. All scholarship awards are offered annually and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,084.

This is an essay contest. Details about the contest and registration forms are available on the Baptist Joint Committee (BJC) website. Essays must be 800 to 1,200 words and must be on the current year's topic; details for this year's topic are available on the BJC website. Essays not meeting the minimum and maximum word count will not be judged. Submitted essays should be in 12-point type, double-spaced and with one-inch page margins. Essays must have a title. Sources must be credited in a bibliography. In addition to the essay, the student must submit a registration form. Students should complete all fields on the registration form. To ensure fairness, no personal or identifying information should appear on the essay, only on the registration form. Students must have a submission advisor who can review their essay. Advisors must be a teacher or counselor at the student's school or be on staff at the student's home church, and cannot be a parent. The advisor reviews the essay to ensure that it meets all the necessary requirements, is free of typographical and grammatical errors, and appropriately addresses the topic. A submission advisor may work with more than one student. The advisor must fill out and submit a form (available online on the BJC website). The essay and registration form must be mailed to the address provided, postmarked by the deadline date. Emailed and faxed entries will not be accepted.
