Description: This award is for U.S. students aged 4 to 18 that are inspired generate new ideas to prevent injuries and fatalities from home fires.

Additional Information: The Paradigm Challenge is an annual competition that inspires youth innovation to address important social issues. The first annual Challenge aims to generate new ideas to prevent injuries and fatalities from home fires—America’s #1 disaster threat. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges will evaluate entries based on effectiveness, feasibility, originality, presentation, and collaboration. Members of the public will also vote for their favorite finalist from June 1 to Aug. 30. Please note: there are three competition divisions. Division 1 is ages 7 to 10. Division 2 is ages 11 to 14. Division 3 is 15 to 18.

Award Amount: There are varying prize amounts. Three first place teams, one from each division, will receive $20,000. From the three first place teams, one will be selected to win the $100,000 grand prize, in place of the $20,000 award. One second place team from each division will earn $10,000 and one third place team from each division will be awarded $5,000. If a first place, second place, or third place team has less than four qualifying members, each qualifying member will receive 25% of the team prize amount. The remaining 91 finalists that do not place in the top three will receive $500. In addition, up to four team members from each first place and grand prize team, along with a parent or guardian for each team member, will receive a four day/three night trip to Los Angeles to attend the Paradigm Challenge awards ceremony. Prizes for the public voting period are as follows: first place: $5,000, second place: $3,000, third place: $2,000, fourth place: $1,500, fifth place: $1,000, sixth through tenth place: $500 each. These prizes are seperate from the finalists prizes.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,500.

Additional information can be found on the Paradigm Project website. To apply, students must first register on the site. Once registered, students submit an entry form detailing: team name and members; the team's idea; and the team's experience working on the challenge. Teams will create safety posters, videos, inventions, community events, apps, websites, or anything else that will help save lives. Please note: there is no minimum or maximum on the number of team members. The age of the oldest team member determines what division the team will compete in. Collaboration is encouraged, however single person teams are permitted. Entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on the deadline date.
